magine, this is the end of December 2017. I don’t know about you, but for me 2017 went flying by. We all worked hard, now even more so because most of us multitask; five even up to ten things at same the time. That’s the ability that technology gives to everyone.

One aspect of the Valley, is that it continues to attract professionals from every part of the world. This time, we had the pleasure to meet with Dr. Hazem B. Kanaan, D.O., an Osteopathic Physician specializing in Obstetrics and Gynecology.

He is also treating patients with obesity challenges.

Dr. Kanaan has been in the Valley a little over four years, and last October, he opened his clinic in McAllen on Dove Avenue, one step away from Edinburg. He is very qualified in his specialized field and wants to make a real difference in the Rio Grande Valley. Enjoy!

During the celebration, members of the foundation in the company of their sponsors, celebrated the accomplishment featuring Las Vegas entertainer Frankie Moreno.

Like every year, this gala is an extraordinary event that I have labeled as a ‘must go’.

Good News from our good friend, Dr. Leo Lopez III of Rio Grande City was recently honored as part of an elite group of 12 Texas A&M University alumni in the “12 Under 12” Young Alumni Spotlight. More in this issue. Congratulations!

As every year, Mega Doctor News December is one of the most important issues we publish. Aside from bringing you a new physician to meet, we compiled all eleven doctors that we have featured in 2017.

That is why this particular issue becomes a Collectors Issue. We started the year bringing you some of the best stories on the medical professionals working to help the Dr. Hazem B. Kanaan

people of the Valley.

You will read about Dr. Michael Sander, an orthopedic surgeon in Weslaco was our Mega Doctor in January; and in February, Dr. Nicole Grigg-Gutierrez who provides life-saving colonoscopies was our feature story. Then Dr. José Raúl Nieves-Sosa who performs minimally invasive OB/GYN surgeries was featured in March.

In April, we brought you four outstanding physicians who formed a kidney transplantation team. They are: Dr. Jose Almeda, transplant director for the Renaissance Transplant Institute; Dr. Phillip Thomas, transplant surgeon; Dr. Mourad Alsabbagh, transplant nephrologist; and Dr. Gaudencio Olgin, urologic surgeon.

In May, we announced that Dr. Carlos J. Cardenas was named President of the largest medical association in Texas. Then in June, Dr. Michael Wingard, an optometrist who serves the nation’s bravest was our Mega Doctor. Dr. Juan Joel Garza, an interventional cardiologist affiliated with the South Heart Clinics was our July exclusive. Then in August, it was a pleasure to learn of doctor scientists dedicated to medical breakthroughs like Dr. Shoukhrat Mitalipov; his team of scientists successfully eliminated a genetic

disease from human embryos.

Last September, we brought you the story of one of the great cardiologists in South Texas, Dr. Norman M. Ramirez, a pioneer in medicine. Then in October, Dr. Álvaro Restrepo, an oncologist and hematologist, shared that he fights with his patients against cancer.

In November, medical breakthrough cancer specialist, Dr. Michael Bishop at UChicago Medical with FDA approved treatments for advanced lymphoma cancer is offering pioneer CAR T-cell therapy for cancer patients. Patients with this type of cancer will have a better chance of survival.

He said, “So, 1% cut on Medicare is 8% for the entire Valley. That's huge. So that's why without lobbyists, without people representing us in Austin or DC, it's tough to challenge the system.”

What inspired

O

nce more, the Rio Grande Valley has solidified itself as a special place. Day after day, this region embraces professionals from every part of the world as each one brings specialties and talents combined with a passion for solving the health issues that are prevalent in the Valley.

Dr. Hazem B. Kanaan, D.O., an Osteopathic Physician specializing in Obstetrics and Gynecology, is a new healthcare provider to the Valley. He is a licensed board-certified physician, trained with a unique perspective on care as an OB/GYN and Obesity Medicine. He graduated with honors from West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine in 2009, then he completed his OB/GYN training at Henry Ford Wyandotte Hospital in Detroit, Michigan by 2013. “OB/GYN is the medical specialty that deals with women's health and reproductive health starting from the teenage years all the way through their menopause,” Dr. Kanaan told Mega Doctor News in an exclusive interview.

He has gone the extra mile in his education and training. “I finished my fellowship in obesity and metabolic disease management, so, I could offer more help to my patients’ concerns for women, although I also trained to take care of men, and pediatric patients for obesity.” In this field, he is also boardcertified by the American Board of Obesity Medicine.

The Obstetrics/Gynecology practice is relatively new to him as a solo practitioner. He said, “Although I've been here in the Valley for over four years now, I just opened in October of 2017." He named his clinic All Women Medical Clinic, but, like he said, “I'm not holding back, I also practice obesity management with a separate entity, in the same physical location, and it's called RGV Medical Weight Loss.” His goal is to help patients who have struggled with weight problems and unhealthy lifestyle choices. According to Dr. Kanaan, he uses evidence based medicine to shape specific plans to meet a patient's personal needs. Having a background in health care and women's services, Dr. Kanaan found a significant need in the Rio Grande Valley for lifestyle reform and empowering weight loss habits and plans.

Dr. Kanaan was born and raised in the Damascus, Syria. “I moved to the United States in 1999, and I landed in Georgia. Then I did my undergraduate studies at Kennesaw State University.”

In 2005, he got accepted to West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine. “I graduated from there in 2009; then I went up to Henry Ford Wyandotte Hospital

When he came to the Valley, his first job was at Mission Regional Hospital under Mission Health. During the time that he worked with Mission and the time that he spent with the University of Texas, he completed his fellowship and training in the Obesity Medicine.

“I hope I can change one patient at a time because it's time to change the culture,” he said categorically. “It's the lifestyle what's making this place unhealthy, making diabetes, obesity, and heart attacks number one; so, one patient at a time is the plan.”

Dr. Kanaan has a plan to reach out to the schools to offer his services. “I am interested in early education, where if I start with a new generation and I teach them right, hopefully by the time they grow up they will teach the others, and we break the cycle.” He admits that sometimes it is hard to challenge older folks to change, but he firmly believes it's a lot easier to convince a young child to change. “Usually when they get into the teens, you can give them a rational thought process where it makes sense, and they buy into it.” He said.

Dr. Kanaan is not wasting time when it comes to delivering his message.

The week when this interview took place, he had scheduled with one of the schools to do a health seminar for the employees, so they get to know him.

The more significant plan for him is to give a proposal to the entire school district, including their board members, for a weight loss management/lifestyle modification plan. “Hopefully they will take that into consideration, and we can come up with a five-year plan; that’s my goal,” he said.

What concerns you about the future

about OB/GYN specifically?

“There have been significant changes with the insurance, and with reimbursements, and there is a lot more pressure on the physician that is causing many private practices to stop taking Medicaid and Medicare.” He said, ‘The government keeps cutting back and paying less. The doctors are fed up, and saying "I don't want to see Medicaid or Medicare patients."

Dr. Kanaan says that the current situation puts a significant burden on those physicians who do because they have to attend to so many patients, and fewer doctors are accepting them. "Consequently, the patients pack the ER’s and other medical doctors, so it becomes a significant volume that increases with time.”

Do you have a solution? “It's hard to suggest a solution at this point without lobbyists, without people who are in Congress, because people who make these decisions are in Austin, where they have less than 10% population dependent on Medicaid. So, they could not care less if they make a recommendation of cutting 1 to 2% on Medicare because it's not going to affect them,” he said.

He pointed out that in the Rio Grande Valley it's vice versa, 10 to 15% are private. There's a huge number, more than 80%, that are

want to be a doctor." And that's has been my goal since I can remember.”

How did you meet your wife?

“I'll let her tell you that story. It sounds better coming from her,” he said. As this conversation was taking place, his wife Amira was with him; they have been married since 2006.

She said, “Actually I have known his mom longer than him. I love her; I love his mom, and she loves me.” She continued, “So, when he came to visit Syria, he saw me, and his mom, Ms. Abida Ghannam, said to him, "Look at her, she's beautiful," and other things like that; it was kind of an arranged marriage and we got engaged after two weeks. He applied for my papers to come to America and after one year I came with him.”

Dr. Kanaan, when you saw Amira was it love at first sight? “Absolutely.

Unmistakable,” Dr. Kannan said.

They have two boys, Bassam 10, and Amir 4. “Both of them are into modeling and available for TV commercials,” said Mrs. Kanaan.

Do you have any hobbies or interests? “Wife and kids, and politics.”

Dr. Kanaan has the intention of someday going into politics and has been working in the background on many campaigns. Today, he says, “Making a change comes with those who have the keys. And to me I'm here, these are my four walls, I have this clinic key.

I can only see one patient at a time. If I have access to making legislative actions and reforms where I can affect hundreds of people at the same time, I’d feel that patients would be better off that way.”

Dr. Kanaan and his wife, Amira, appreciate the love and support of the Rio Grande Valley. He said, “As somebody who's not born and raised here, to get welcomed as family, it gives me a lot of energy and a lot of encouragement to make this place a better place because if I felt like an outsider, I would have packed up and left.”

Experienced Orthopedic Surgeon Opens Office in Weslaco Dr. Michael Sander Well-Known in the Mid-Valley for Knee and Hip Replacement Surgeries, and Sports Medicine for Athletes Mega Doctor News

eslaco - Dr. Michael Sander, an Orthopedic Surgeon specializing in knee and hip replacement surgery and sports medicine, and a Partner-In-Care to Knapp Medical Center, has opened a new office on E. 6th Street, in Weslaco, across the street from the award-winning and nationally-recognized hospital.

“It’s a new office for a new year,” Dr. Sander said. “We would like to welcome all of our patients, both new and existing, and our friends in the community. This new office, in the Knapp Medical Arts Building (at 1315 East 6th Street, Suite 10), will allow us to better serve our patients with compassionate and patient-centered care close to home, right here in Weslaco.”

Dr. Sander is well-known to local residents and Winter Texans for performing knee and hip replacements, which can help allow patients with arthritis and other

conditions to walk again without pain.

Many of these patients say they simply want to be ridden of pain, so they can return to a ‘normal life’ with their grandchildren and to activities they enjoy.

"These are patients whose ability to walk and move is restricted by severe pain,” Dr. Sander said.

“In many cases, we can replace the damaged parts of knee and hip joints with specially-crafted prostheses made from plastic or metal. Patients are then on the road to recovery, with the help of physical therapy. It’s not easy -- but the end result in many cases is to gain a new freedom – the freedom to walk, move, and even dance without pain.”

Following their surgery, these patients are helped by physical therapists and other licensed professionals with the Knapp Medical Center Rehabilitation Services Department, which is accredited by the national accrediting organization for healthcare organizations, the Joint Commission. These therapists work closely with physicians to provide a complete range of therapies and treatment, including for patients recovering from surgery, as well as for those with arthritis; osteoporosis; joint, neck and back pain; and sports and work injuries.

In addition to seeing older patients with arthritis, Dr. Sander is also known to many younger patients in the MidValley who have needed treatment for sports injuries related to high

“We take care of athletes of all ages,” Dr. Sander added. “This includes youth leagues, high school, college, and professional athletes, as well as ‘weekend warriors’ and those who exercise for health or recreation.”

Dr. Nicole Grigg-Gutierrez: Providing Life-Saving Colonoscopies & Advanced Gastroenterology Procedures for Mid-Valley Residents Mega Doctor News

eslaco, Texas February 2017 – Dr. Nicole GriggGutierrez, M.D. – whose interest in gastroenterology was sparked in part when her own father developed cancer of the stomach – is now offering potentially life-saving colonoscopies as well as endoscopies and advanced gastroenterology-related services in the Mid-Valley area. Originally from Puerto Rico, Dr. Grigg has opened a gastroenterology office in the Knapp Medical Center Medical Arts Building, 1330 East Sixth Street, Suite 201 in Weslaco.

While Dr. Grigg eventually went on to complete a fellowship in Advanced Endoscopy at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, North Carolina, she said the decision to focus on the specialty of gastroenterology was actually a very personal decision -- which took root when she was still a medical resident at the Department of Veterans Affairs / Caribbean Healthcare System in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

“As part of my curriculum in internal medicine residency, I had the opportunity of performing a two-week elective rotation in gastroenterology in my first year,” Dr. Grigg recalls. “This short rotation reinforced my interest in this field and gave me a feel of what a career in gastroenterology comprises.”

“After all the clinical exposure -- and then the unexpected personal ordeal of dealing with my father’s diagnosis of gastric adenocarcinoma (gastric cancer) -- I realized that continuing a career in gastroenterology was my true passion and next academic goal,” she added.

Dr. Grigg-Gutierrez is now helping in the fight against the potentially-deadly disease of colon cancer by offering colonoscopy screenings at Knapp Medical Canter’s gastrointestinal lab, as well as at Harlingen Medical Center.

Colonoscopies are recommended for men and women 50 years of age or older, in most cases, as a way to prevent colon cancer – which is one of the most common cancers, but also one of the most preventable cancers.

During a colonoscopy screening, precancerous polyps (growths of cells that form inside the colon, or large intestine) can be removed -- before cancer develops and spreads throughout the body.

“Now is an ideal time to highlight the importance of a colon cancer screening,” Dr. Grigg said.

“March is national colorectal cancer awareness month -- and screenings can help us find and treat this disease before it becomes deadly.

You can help save the lives of your loved ones by encouraging them to get a colonoscopy as recommended

Regular screening starting at age 50 is crucial because, in most cases, colorectal cancers do not produce noticeable symptoms in its early stages. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 136,119 people in the United States were diagnosed with colorectal cancer in 2013 – and 51,813 people died from the disease.

“Colorectal cancer is the second-leading cause of death among cancers that affect both men and women, and 60 percent of it is preventable, according to the CDC,” Dr. Grigg added.

While colonoscopy is one of the most common procedures that Dr. Grigg performs, she also brings advanced capabilities to the Mid-Valley area. During her fellowship, she received training in a number of procedures that represent the leading edge of medical technology -- including Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) – a procedure that treats problems associated with the bile and pancreatic ducts, ranging from gallstones to tumors or cancer.

Minimally Invasive OB/GYN Surgeon a Distinguished Professional of the Valley

r. José Raúl Nieves-Sosa, F.A.C.O.G., a seasoned doctor in the field of Obstetrics and Gynecology, has been practicing for the last twenty-two years.

Dr. Nieves-Sosa is also the Chairman of the Robotic Surgery/Minimally Invasive Gynecology Committee at Valley Baptist Medical Center (VBMC) in Brownsville.

VBMC – Brownsville has earned a Center of Excellence in Minimally Invasive Gynecology (COEMIG) and a Center of Excellence in Robotic Surgery (COERS) designation from Surgical Review Corporation; with Dr. NievesSosa being designated as Surgeon of Excellence in both categories. To earn the COEMIG designation, surgeons and hospitals must partner together and demonstrate a cross-organizational commitment to minimally invasive gynecologic surgical care. COERS shares similar requirements but is focused on multi-specialty roboticassisted surgery.

To be certified as a Center of Excellence in Minimally Invasive Gynecology by SRC, both VBMCBrownsville and Dr. Nieves had to meet a set of strict guidelines and requirements related to patient safety.

For healthcare facilities seeking the Center of Excellence designation, such requirements include the performing of at least 100 minimally invasive gynecologic surgery procedures – such as laparoscopic hysterectomies – at the facility within the last 12 months. Applying surgeons must have performed at least 125 minimally invasive gynecologic procedures in their lifetime, including 35 such procedures performed within the previous 12 months.

Dr. NievesSosa owns and operates Brownsville Obstetrics and Gynecologic Associates located at 800 W. Jefferson Street, Suite 210, in Brownsville, Texas. He is a Fellow of the American of the College of Obstetrics and Gynecology.

He pointed out that he

He explained, “What that means is that we want to concentrate on not opening up people.” He said, “We want to focus on doing the most we can with the smallest invasion that we can.”

Currently, they have a mix of patients, ranging from pediatric patients, pregnant women, and older women who have menstrual, urinary or pelvic problems.

Dr. Nieves-Sosa is known for adopting state-of-the-art technology, which has become an extension that complements his practice. He stated, “It’s making an improvement over existing technology, and I have adopted that before others in the Valley.”

Dr. Nieves-Sosa was born in Santurce, Puerto Rico to parents Jose Luis Nieves Van Derdys and Sandra Sosa. Dr. Nieves-Sosa likes working in the Valley because it feels just like home. “It’s a

different accent, but it’s the same kind of people.” He identifies with the people of the Valley. Dr. Nieves-Sosa loves his profession and enjoys practicing in a region where he identifies with the people.

He says his concerns about the medical field are about the government.

“They make it so challenging and there are so many regulations and so many different requirements and then so many ways to cut your reimbursement. I worry about that.”

Regardless, Dr. Nieves-Sosa said better patient outcomes and doing what is best for each of his patients drives him to perform minimally invasive surgeries.

Forty years later, Dr. Salgado is still helping Dr. Nieves-Sosa. He said, “I saw Dr. Salgado in Boston during a medical conference, and he is helping me to become a faculty member and a member of the Society of Laparoendoscopic Surgeons.”

He said the non-profit organization is dedicated to ensuring the highest standards for the practice of laparoscopy, endoscopy, and minimally invasive surgery.

Hernandez. “It has been one month and six days I believe since your surgery.”

Disque said, “And look at them, amazing.”

Disque stated that the kidney transplantation success was a team effort; a combination of great patients and a talented group of physicians.

“We're extremely proud of them, for the hard work that they have done. And I would like to thank our administration for all the support. This has been quite a task and we've had a 110% support,” she said.

Dr. Carlos Cardenas Named President of Largest Medical Association

W

hat a memorable event, as the largest medical group, the Texas Medical Association (TMA) installed Dr. Carlos J. Cardenas as its 152nd president during their annual conference. Dr. Cardenas, a native of the Rio Grande Valley, practices in the field of gastroenterology. In his 28th year of practice, Dr. Cardenas chairs the Rio Grande Valley’s Doctors Hospital At Renaissance, which he helped found and serves as chief administrative officer.

The years have gone by fast; however, he has not changed. He is the same professional, always eager, looking for solutions and providing the best medical care for the communities of the Rio Grande Valley.

As you all know, becoming the president `of the Texas Medical Association is no small accomplishment.

As a matter of fact, the only other Valley physician to have had that honor was Dr. Mario E. Ramirez, 38 years ago.

Dr. Ramirez, who is originally from Rio Grande City, became the 75th president of the association serving one year between 1979-1980…

Dr. Cardenas has always said that he is very proud of being from McAllen. He is related to many people since his parents come from two old families from centuries ago. He told Mega Doctor News that on his father’s side, his family has traced their lineage all the way to 1740. He pointed out that in the 1754 census of

Camargo, Tamaulipas, Mexico, they were counted as one of the Garcia’s.

“My father is Ruben Cardenas Garcia, so our ancestor was there; he came with that expedition to colonize Nuevo Santander,” Dr. Cardenas stated…

He and his wife of 28 years, Chris Cardenas, have three sons, Adam R. Cardenas, Simon C. Cardenas, and Daniel O. Cardenas…

“I am looking forward to an exciting year of advocacy on behalf of our patients and my colleagues,” stated Dr. Cardenas.

“With all the uncertainty coming out of Washington, and the instability in the health care arena, I believe opportunities will present themselves in abundance to drive policy and opinion in the best interest of our patients and our profession.”

Yet his father wasn’t his only leadership role model. “You have to lead by example; that’s something I learned from my grandmother, my mom’s mom… “You learn very quickly when you are an intern that you need to follow the example of those who are more senior than you are, and who know more than you do.” Eventually, he said, you learn to step up and accept the responsibility as leader of the health care team, in the name of providing the best patient care. Sometimes that means rolling up one’s

“When those opportunities arise, our TMA is up to the challenge,” he said. “Bring it on!” The 33-year TMA member has seized many opportunities.

Dr. Cardenas chaired the association’s Board of Trustees, its governing body.

Prior to joining the Board in 2005, he served five years as a member of the TMA Council on Legislation, and was legislative chair of the Border Health Caucus, to which he still belongs.

He is a delegate in TMA’s House of Delegates. Dr. Cardenas also is a member of the TMA Foundation, the association’s philanthropic arm; a TMA liaison to the Coalition of State Medical Societies; and is a founding and Patron Club member of TEXPAC, TMA’s political action committee (on which he also served as a district chair) … Dr. Cardenas also served as president of the Hidalgo-Starr County Medical Society, of which he still is a member... He also helped lead TMA’s fight for medical liability reform, which became Texas law in 2003. Doctors in the Rio Grande Valley and a few other Texas cities planted that seed when they believed

rampant medical liability lawsuits eroded patient care.

“When you get shot at all the time, when 70 percent or more of your colleagues are named in a lawsuit or a party to a lawsuit and you can no longer recruit, retain or attract [physicians] to your community to do what is needed to be done for the health of your community; something had to change,” said Dr. Cardenas.

“That was something that drove me and others in our community to stand up and say, ‘No more.’ We came together and organized.”

Dr. Cardenas received his medical degree at The University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston, Texas. He completed his residency training in internal medicine and gastroenterology at Scott & White Memorial Hospital in Temple, Texas.

In his spare time, he plays charity gigs with several other Rio Grande Valley physicians in their band, The Renaissance Rockers.

“It’s what builds strong community,” he said. “It’s what I call exemplary leadership.” His grandmother would be proud. Outgoing TMA President Don R. Read, MD, of Dallas installed Dr. Cardenas during The Texas Medical Association’s conference.

Dr. Michael Wingard, Optometrist, Serving the Nation’s Bravest

eing part of the medical industry takes more than just being a doctor. It takes dedication, commitment, and an immeasurable passion for doing it right.

Dr. Michael T. Wingard, an Optometrist, is just such a doctor. He is a unique professional working full-time to change the lives of people…

Early Life He was born in Colby, Kansas, a rural area in the northwest; the county had less than 10,000 in population.

Most of the residents in the state were farmers, and Dr. Wingard’s parents were no exception. They worked the farms from dawn to dusk… Dr. Wingard’s personality was different from the rest; he wanted to achieve something different in his life.

Inspiration Dr. Wingard vividly remembers that there was only one eye doctor in his town. "Everyone in my town liked him." It was that same doctor who inspired him the most...

Education To pursue his dreams after high school, he enrolled at the University of Kansas where he received his Bachelor of Arts in Chemistry. After that he went to the University of Houston College of Optometry and finished in 1992. He says that’s when his journey as a doctor began…

Dr. Wingard is a Board Certified Therapeutic and Glaucoma Subspecialist in Texas.

He also has practicing privileges to work in others states that include Kansas, Montana, and Hawaii, and at one time in the state

of Colorado. He is fully licensed in Texas to practice optometry Career Dr. Wingard has been working in Texas for 25 years as a full-time optometrist. The best thing about him is that he is passionate about his profession and always ready to help others…

Presently, he has accepted a full-time job at the McAllen VA Outpatient Clinic. According to Dr. Wingard, this health care facility needed an optometrist, and now he is the eye doctor for Veterans. “I am the only optometrist here.” He works with the latest equipment in eye care.

Aside from feeling patriotic, he enjoys proudly serving the nation’s bravest.

“I love my new job.”

Dr. Wingard told Mega Doctor News that he deals with patients suffering from different kinds of eye diseases that range from cataracts, and glaucoma, to retinopathy. “Most of the patients are suffering from diabetic retinopathy and glaucoma.” He said, “The reason behind the diseases is poor dietary habits and lack of physical activity.”

According to Dr. Wingard, South Texas is one of the top areas in the world where most of the people are obese. “People consume mostly fast food and processed food; that is the primary cause of obesity and diabetes.” He continued, “People need to consume more vegetables and fruits to keep their vision healthy.”

June The doctor mostly deals with the adults at the Veteran’s clinic, although he says that some of the patients in his second job are pediatric patients suffering from early retinopathy…

Dr. Wingard understands that his services are vital for the people of the Rio Grande Valley because early diagnosis of eye diseases is necessary for proper treatment and the best outcomes.

When he came to Texas to pursue his career in 1995, he met Annette Aguilar through some of their social friends. She was still in college, and he was a young doctor building his practice.

Eventually, they started dating, and then were married. Annette is a nurse instructor. He says they have a healthy relationship because they understand each other’s goals and are supportive.

Annette says she admires her husband by how dedicated and hardworking he is…

Organizational work Dr. Wingard joined the Rotary International Club in 2002. The entity is a non-profit organization, and for the last ten years, he has been on the board of directors. “I love to be a part of this group because it gives us all an opportunity to help local schools and orphanages.”

Rotary is known worldwide for raising funds and helping those in

need. He recalls that one of the best things he has done during his time in the Rotary Club was when they went to the orphanage in Reynosa, Tamps, in Mexico. Club members went as a big team and repainted the entire shelter building and restored the whole facility according to their capabilities. “I was delighted when I saw the young girls playing with my wife’s hair and commenting at how long and beautiful it was,” he said. That visit had such an impact in his life that he feels the club should continue helping the nuns that run the facility. In his opinion, and this comes from his heart, he wants to help the kids living in the orphanage because they deserve to have a better chance at life.

Future According to Dr. Wingard, this is the reason that most of the doctors are not participating in the research work. They do not want to be innovative or invest in the latest equipment or new things…

Message His message is that whether you have diabetes or not, an annual eye examination is critical… Keep in mind that advanced diseases are hard to treat, so early diagnosis is very important.

he Renaissance Cancer Foundation Gala announced that they raised $345,700 during its annual holiday celebration. The very much needed funds are used to aid cancer patients throughout the Rio Grande Valley. Year after year, patients helped by this effort have stated that they felt blessed.

December 3, 2017 was the night of a grand celebration, for this purpose the venue used for the event was the

beautiful Edinburg Conference Center at Renaissance. What a great night, the combination of guests, the people behind the scenes and the sponsors that make this project a reality, enjoyed an evening of Las Vegas music. Featured was twice-voted Las Vegas headliner of the year Frankie Moreno.

The gala celebration of this monumental fundraising effort is always well received by the community of South Texas as they give back to the individuals who need it most.

Larry Safir, Chairman of Renaissance Cancer Foundation, said, “Since 2008, the Renaissance Cancer Foundation has dedicated its efforts to building community awareness, providing cancer education, emotional support, financial assistance and guidance for underserved patients.”

Frankie Moreno is a great entertainer, but one thing that he did made a tremendous impact on all those present; he dedicated a song to Yoli Garza. “I’ve been told that there's a woman named Yoli and that she's very sad because just recently she lost her son

in a battle with cancer,” Frankie Moreno said.

The entertainer has composed songs for Celine Dion, Cristina Aguilera, and others. He said, “I have a boy of that same age, and I would like to sing to you a special song tonight, and hopefully the music helps a little bit, just for a night.”

He said, that initially he wrote a song for Ray Charles for his last record and he passed away not long before the album came out. “So, this song has just been sitting in a drawer,” he said. The first words of the song were this, ‘It Was Some Kind of Love’.

Frankie Moreno also made time and hugged Yoli, as he hoped that with music and only for the night, it was helping to ease the pain of her loss.

The Renaissance Cancer Foundation’s goal is to provide

patients with services to help them during their cancer journey, in this case, the family also received special attention. The Foundation is a 501(c) (3) tax-exempt nonprofit organization whose purpose is to provide support for cancer patients in the Rio Grande Valley. MDN

Interventional Cardiologist Educates Patients to Live Better Lives

He added that some of the Cardiologists’ in his group (South Heart Clinic) also open neck arteries and perform stent procedures. Their line of work is specialized for those who suffer from heart disease or have chest pain that is caused by blocked arteries.

The experience that Dr. Garza has acquired through his years of training and practice comes as his most valuable tool to evaluate a patient’s heart condition.

According to Dr. Garza, depending on the situation, if they cannot treat a patient medically, or, because of failed medical treatment for heart blockage, then, sometimes the patient may require other procedures to open the blocked arteries…

Dr. Garza acknowledges that compared to 20-years ago, unblocking arteries today is met with experience and with some of the most advanced technology. Patients are even awake when they are undergoing a Cath Lab procedures.

Patients are having conversations with the physician performing the procedure.

There are some instances in where the patient is nervous and so they request to be consciously sedated.

“There are a variety of things that can cause this, but, a major factor is old age,” said Dr. Garza. “As we get older, hardening of the arteries and

It’s part of the aging process. There are some prescribed medications that can help halt that hardening process, but, there are some medications that may cause regression. People can also help themselves. They can control their cholesterol and blood sugars. They can do so by eating healthier and exercising.

There are other risk factors that may contribute to hardening of the arteries, like smoking, hypertension, Type II Diabetes, and, family history.” Dr. Garza emphasized that if it is in the genes, then, he or she is at a higher risk of developing heart disease…

“As I mentioned before, exercise is underutilized and if you look at any of the American College of Cardiology (ACC) guidelines and recommendations, physical activity is always on top of the list. Diet and exercise are very important,” said Dr. Garza. “Those are things are how you make an impact on your health.”

Dr. Garza added that he verbalizes, to his patients’, the importance of physical activity. Simple walking,

it can do wonders for their health.

Walk 45-minutes a day. There is not a required necessity to lift weights or run – walking can do really well for a person’s health. Two or three miles a day may help decrease the risk of heart disease and a heart attack significantly…

or the first time, in decades scientists in the United States have edited the DNA of human embryos to prevent a fatal disease. An American researcher, of Russian descent, has successfully done this with animals.

Genes cause the disease called hypertrophic cardiomyopathy…

Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) is very common and can affect people of any age. It affects men and women equally... With this disease, it is impossible to know when your heart might fail you, never knowing if today is the day when it might go off…

The researcher behind this breakthrough is Dr. Shoukhrat Mitalipov, Ph.D., he heads the Center for Embryonic Cell and Gene Therapy at the Oregon Health & Science University in Portland Oregon. He grew up in the Soviet Union when Kazakhstan used to be part of the Soviet Union; he is also an accomplished blues guitarist.

He became interested in studying the cells in embryos when he was in school in Moscow. As soon as he graduated, he came to the United States and started to work with a mentor, Dr. Keith Campbell…

Last week a group of scientists led by Mitalipov published a breakthrough that could do just that: edit and rewrite the gene that causes this heart condition…

Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy occurs if heart muscle cells enlarge and cause the walls of the ventricles (usually the left ventricle) to thicken. The ventricle size often remains normal, but the thickening may block blood flow out of the ventricle. If this happens, the condition is called obstructive hypertrophic cardiomyopathy…

Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy also can affect the heart's mitral valve, causing blood to leak backward through the valve. Sometimes, the thickened heart muscle doesn't block blood flow out of the left ventricle.

Scientists Successfully Eliminated a Genetic Disease from Human Embryos

The research targeted a hard defect, but experts say in the future the same approach can potentially prevent a whole list of inheritable diseases

August This is referred to as non-obstructive hypertrophic cardiomyopathy...

But how exactly does one edit a gene to fix that problem? According to the scientists, this recent breakthrough is an application of a new kind of tool for rewriting DNA called CRISPR, which allows for quick and easy genome editing.

CRISPR is the only complete genome editing solution designed to expedite research.

What scientists did was they created an embryo that had Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy disease, in other words, one copy of a gene from a heart protein that was faulty. They added in molecules to this embryo, which was able to zero in on the part of the gene where this mutation was that causes this disease…

The scientist Dr. Mitalipov also said, “I was really shocked, so this is kind of a big moment for me to understand that we have more power in manipulating nature than we think.”

Scientist TV commentators said, “Genetic engineering yesterday was science fiction, and today it’s reality.”

The United States has been opposed to genetic modifications in human embryos for quite a long time; they have made it very clear that they're not going to approve clinical trials for Mitalipov’s project.

In 2016 Congress inserted a little line into the budget saying that the FDA cannot even consider an application to mitochondrial replacement therapy…

The success of his research gave him and others a certain boost to say, “okay let's go to government agencies and ask for permission to apply this technology in humans.”

In the United States, it's just a very different story, the answer to that was a big NO. The United Kingdom opened its doors, and they have gone forth with approving it and moving forward with this, full steam ahead with lots of regulations.

Dr. Mitalipov said, “I understand that you need to draw a line, what's permissible what's not. We don't want a neglected use, but what we're asking is let us test it. It needs to be tested in clinical settings.” … “I don't think, you know, this technology can’t be stopped at this stage, and I believe this is going to be the future, and an initial interest of

every country, the United States has just to reconsider their policies.” … The U.S. National Academy of Sciences (NAS) report notes that many inherited diseases can be prevented by selecting healthy embryos for in-vitro fertilization, and that embryo editing might only be justified if it presents the only option for a couple to have a healthy biological child. Congress has meanwhile prohibited the U.S. Food and Drug Administration from reviewing applications for clinical trials involving embryo editing. MDN

Dr. Norman M. Ramirez, an Outstanding Physician and Pioneer in Medicine

His trainings in cardiology and internal medicine have saved hundreds of lives in a journey spanning over three decades

orman M. Ramirez, M.D., F.A.C.C. is a recognizable name in medicine. He is an internal medicine and cardiology physician certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine and with a solid background in his specialties. Dr. Ramirez treats adult to geriatric patients with certain cardiovascular diseases at the Heart Institute at Renaissance…

Ramirez grew up in the very small community of Roma, Texas in Starr County. The 2010 Census reported the population at under ten thousand. He attended high school in Rio Grande City, also in Starr County.

“My father was a doctor there, Dr. Mario Ramirez; he practiced for many, many years. Yeah, that's my dad,” he said. His father is an icon in medicine and recognized as a pioneer in his industry in the Rio Grande Valley. He passed away on Monday, May 22, 2017, at the age of 91.

Dr. Ramirez said that his father was a definite influence and an inspiration for him, that is why he is a doctor today. “I was exposed to medicine at a very early age.” He said, “We used to go to the

hospital with him all the time when I was growing up, including house calls.” … Dr. Norman Ramirez had a great teacher, his dad, someone who loved him and left a legacy of accomplishments, difficult for many to achieve...

There is a famous saying in Spanish, “Hijo de tigre, pintito,” (meaning: the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree). In a way, this describes Dr. Norman Ramirez, who at age 12 witnessed his first surgery being performed by his father. In 1973, at age 16, he enrolled at Yale University graduating in 1977 Magna Cum Laude in Biology with a Bachelor of the Arts degree. He received one of the highest honors, and he did it while attending one of the best universities in the world…

He pointed out to Mega Doctor News, that in 1986-87 he trained in interventional cardiology, angioplasties, and stents in a fellowship called Invasive Cardiology Fellowship on Coronary Angioplasty. According to Dr. Ramirez, all of these techniques in medicine were just starting; today they are some of the biggest parts of cardiology…

In 1989, he decided to come home. “That's how I ended back here. As you know, I had a lot of family ties and I wanted my kids to be exposed to the culture here.” Dr. Ramirez was right to say that family was a strong attraction to come back to the Valley, the other interest was to bring services that had not been available here before.

He acknowledges that today, there are other electrophysiologists here, but when he returned he was the first and only one.

“I implanted the first implantable defibrillator in McAllen and in the Valley in 1989…”

That said, along with other cardiologists, Dr. Ramirez started the TAVR program, which is the Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement…

So, you are a pioneer in

September some areas? “Well, there's a lot of good cardiologists here. There's a lot of them.

So, I don't hold myself above any of them, but I managed to keep going for nearly 30 years doing those procedures,” he said…

Dr. Ramirez said he feels that the most exciting procedure is this catheter valve replacement. From his point of view, it is very revolutionary. “Patients don't have to have open heart surgery.

They just go in and get a catheter, get the valve replaced and they leave the hospital after one or two days, which is pretty amazing…”

Personal Life: Readers of Mega Doctor News might be surprised to know that Dr. Ramirez was born in Tokyo, Japan. His father was drafted into the Air Force and while serving, he was stationed in Tokyo, Japan for three years. He said, “I was born in Tokyo, but then I grew up in Roma.” … Dr. Norman Ramirez is married to Liza Canales Ramirez, from McAllen.

He also met his wife in a hospital when she was a nurse. He said that it was love at first sight… They have five children, one of them is following in his father footsteps.

McAllen Oncologist Says the Cure for Cancer Is Already Happening

lvaro Restrepo, M.D., an oncologist and hematologist physician, with more than twenty years in the field, says the cure for some cancers is already happening. He also pointed out that there is hope for more treatments as scientists continue their aggressive investigation of different types of cancer.

Dr. Restrepo specializes in internal medicine, medical oncology, and hematology. He is board certified in medical oncology. He is also the regional director for research in oncology for Texas Oncology-McAllen.

Dr. Restrepo pointed out that obesity is recognized as one of the most common risk factors for at least 13 types of cancer. Several studies suggest, almost 40% of all cancers are associated with obesity because obesity produces certain inflammatory substances that can trigger mutations and can make tumors grow…

Have you seen cancer cases here that you have not seen before? "I think every patient; every case is unique because there are so many variables taken into account and we are all different…"

Dr. Restrepo said that even in brothers or sisters from the same father and mother, their genetic material is different from each other…

How can you convey a stronger message to a community already labeled as the fattest?

"Since we already know what the problem is, now we

Dr. Restrepo is one of the most active physicians in the area, be that in taking care of his patients, cancer awareness, and research. In this regard, last year, he and a group of professionals started a project that he hopes is the seed for a more significant project in the future.

"The idea is to create a research platform in the Valley." For that purpose, they have created an entity by the name South Texas Research Group and Tumor Bank. He said, "We are going to create a platform to obtain tissue from cancer, donated by patients." … Dr. Restrepo said, “The fact that we have a unique population in the Valley will make this platform valuable to researchers. The uniqueness of the area is the combination of being Hispanic, young, underserved and the problem of having

a very high incidence of obesity and diabetes...”

South Texas Research Group and Tumor Bank also aim to help and support medical students or young researchers that sometimes don't find anyone to help them. The participation of Dr. Restrepo in this endeavor is crucial. He carries the influence of Texas Oncology McAllen, a group of dedicated oncologists participating in more than 250 research protocols locally since 1994.

"We are a huge network of researchers, and possibly the largest network of community oncologists in the country and maybe the world." He said, "The experience, the opportunity that we have is unique so the key is to present this to the community and especially medical students so they can think and take advantage of this opportunity." …

Important Research Discovery "We have compiled cases from Non-HIV Kaposi Sarcoma patients for the last ten years, and we have discovered an increased incidence in Hispanic females in the population of South Texas, which is a rare disease," he finalized. FDA Approves Treatment for Advanced Lymphoma Cancer UChicago Medicine first site in Illinois offering pioneering CAR T-cell therapy for cancer Mega Doctor News

T

he U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved the use of a breakthrough cancer treatment — Yescarta (axicabtagene ciloleucel) — for adult patients with relapsed or refractory diffuse large B-cell lymphoma, a form of non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL).

Approval came just weeks after making the therapy available for pediatric and young adult patients with the most common form of leukemia.

The treatment, known as CAR T-cell therapy, is being offered by the University of Chicago Medicine, the first site in Chicago and Illinois to be certified by both Kite Pharma Inc. and Novartis.

The FDA requires special certification for sites offering CAR T-cell therapy, and only specially trained hospitals and clinics will be part of the network of treatment centers. UChicago Medicine has treated 11 adult patients since May 2016 in clinical trials leading to FDA approval of this innovative approach.

Development of CAR T-cells is “probably the greatest event that I’ve seen in my 25-year career,” said cancer specialist Michael Bishop, MD, professor of medicine and director of the hematopoietic cellular therapy program at UChicago Medicine.

“In terms of cancer care, this is revolutionary.”

CAR T-cell therapy, often described as a “living drug,” was initially designed to treat two blood cancers — diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) and acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) — caused by the rapid proliferation of a component of the human immune system known as B-cells.

DLBCL is the most common form of NHL. It is a fast-growing, difficult-totreat

disease, responsible for about 23,000 new cases each year in the United States. Although DLBCL can occur in childhood, it is much more common in people in their 50s and 60s. Patients with relapsed or refractory DLBCL have a median survival of approximately six months.

Instead of chemotherapy and radiation, CAR T-cell treatment relies on each patient’s immune system. To create CAR T-cells, scientists remove some of each patient’s T-cells, the workhorses of the immune system.

Then they insert highly specific tools that enable these cells to detect both normal and diseased B-cells.

They grow millions of these modified T-cells in the lab and then return the re-programmed T-cells to the patient, through a simple intravenous drip. Within a few days, these CAR T-cells multiply in the body, then search for B-cells and destroy them.

The immediate cancer-cellkilling onslaught includes the release of powerful inflammatory signals as well as the rapid destruction of a large volume of tumor cells. This can cause serious flu-like symptoms, such as high fevers, sudden blood pressure drops, as well as neurotoxicity, leading to confusion and seizures.

Physicians quickly learned, however, how to limit these side effects with steroids and other antiinflammatory drugs.

DLBCL patients often relapse after standard treatments, but those

Now, about 50 percent of patients who receive CAR T-cell therapy appear to have lasting complete remissions.

Scott McIntyre The first patient treated at UChicago Medicine who underwent a clinical trial of CAR T-cell therapy was Scott McIntyre, of South Bend, Indiana.

He and his doctors in his home town and at UChicago Medicine had been helping him fight DLBCL since November 2013. On May 18, 2016, he received CAR T-cells – engineered by the Swiss pharmaceutical company Novartis, in partnership with the University of Pennsylvania.

Patients who have a complete response, meaning no evidence of disease, for three months or more are unlikely to have a recurrence. McIntyre is now more than 16 months out from treatment, with no sign of cancer.

“This is going to change how we treat hematologic malignancies,” Bishop said. “This is just the beginning, the infancy of CAR T-cell therapy. We think

variations of cellular therapy could be applied to a broad spectrum of diseases, including other forms of lymphoma, multiple myeloma and maybe, over time, even solid tumors, like colon or pancreatic cancer.”

Yescarta is approved for use in adult patients with large B-cell lymphoma after at least two other kinds of treatment failed, including DLBCL, primary mediastinal large B-cell lymphoma, high grade B-cell lymphoma and DLBCL arising from follicular lymphoma. Yescarta is not indicated for the treatment of patients with primary central nervous system lymphoma.

The FDA is requiring that hospitals and their associated clinics that dispense Yescarta be specially certified. As part of that certification, staff involved in the prescribing, dispensing or administering of Yescarta must be trained to recognize and manage cytokine release syndrome (CRS), which is a systemic response to the activation and proliferation of CAR T-cells, and nervous system toxicities.The FDA granted Yescarta Priority Review and Breakthrough Therapy designations.

“We still have a lot of work to do,” Bishop said, “but to say I’m excited would be a major understatement. This is what cancer specialists pray for.”

U

na vez más, el Valle del Rio Grande se ha solidificado como un lugar especial. Día tras día, esta región recibe con brazos abiertos a profesionales de cada parte del mundo, y cada uno tiene especialidades y talentos combinados con una pasión por resolver los problemas de salud que prevalecen en el Valle del Rio Grande.

El Dr. Hazem B. Kanaan, D.O., un médico osteópata especializado en Obstetricia y Ginecología, es un nuevo proveedor de atención médica en el Valle. Él es un médico certificado por la junta, entrenado con una perspectiva única de la atención como obstetra/ginecólogo y especialista en obesidad. Se graduó con honores de la escuela de medicina osteópata de West Virginia en 2009.

Después completo su entrenamiento en el Hospital Henry Ford Wyandotte en Detroit, Michigan en 2013. “La ginecología es la especialidad médica que se ocupa de la salud de la mujer y la salud reproductiva desde los años de adolescencia hasta que lleguen a la menopausia,” el Dr. Kanaan le dijo a Mega doctor News en una entrevista exclusiva. Él ha ido la milla adicional en su educación y entrenamiento.

“Terminé mi beca en el estudio de la obesidad y tratamiento de enfermedades metabólicas, para poder ofrecer más atención a las preocupaciones de mis pacientes mujeres, sin embargo, también estoy entrenado para cuidar de los hombres, y pacientes pediátricos con obesidad.” En este campo, también es certificado por la Junta Americana de medicina de la obesidad.

El Dr. Kanaan nació y creció en Damasco, Siria. "Me mudé a los Estados Unidos en 1999, y aterricé en Georgia. Entonces hice mi licenciatura en la Universidad Estatal de Kennesaw.” En 2005, fue aceptado en la escuela de medicina osteópata de West Virginia. “Me gradué de allí en 2009; luego fuí al Hospital Henry Ford Wyandotte en Detroit, Michigan, donde hice mi entrenamiento de residencia en ginecología y terminé en 2013.”

Cuando llegó al Valle, su primer trabajo fue en el Hospital Regional de Mission, bajo Mission Health. Durante el tiempo que él trabajó con Mission y el tiempo que pasó con la Universidad de Texas, completó su beca y entrenamiento en medicina de la obesidad.

“Espero poder cambiar a un paciente a la vez porque es tiempo de cambiar la cultura,” dijo categóricamente. “El estilo de vida es lo que está haciendo que este lugar sea poco sano, causando que estemos en el primer lugar en diabetes, obesidad, y ataques al corazón; por lo tanto, el plan es un paciente a la vez.”

Dr. Kanaan tiene un plan para alcanzar las escuelas para ofrecer sus servicios. “Estoy interesado en la educación temprana, porque si empiezo con una nueva generación y les enseño bien, espero que cuando crezcan enseñen a otros, y así romper el ciclo.” Él admite que a veces es difícil desafiar a la gente mayor a cambiar, pero él cree firmemente que es mucho más fácil convencer a un niño pequeño a cambiar.

“Por lo general, cuando se trata con adolescentes, usted puede darles un proceso de pensamiento racional que tenga sentido, y se convencen.”

El Dr. Kanaan no está perdiendo el tiempo en cuanto a la entrega de su mensaje. La semana en que se llevó a cabo esta entrevista, había programado con una de las escuelas para hacer un seminario de salud para los empleados, para darse a conocer.

El plan más importante para él es dar una propuesta a todo el Distrito Escolar, incluidos sus miembros de la Junta, de un plan de gestión de pérdida de peso/modificación de estilo de vida. “Espero que esto se tomé en consideración, y podamos llegar a un plan de cinco años; ese es mi objetivo,” dijo.

el futuro sobre la ginecología específicamente, “Ha habido cambios significativos con el seguro, y con reembolsos, y hay mucha más presión sobre el médico que está causando que muchas prácticas privadas dejen de aceptar Medicaid y Medicare.” Él dijo: “el gobierno sigue reduciendo y pagando menos. Los doctores están hartos y diciendo que no quieren ver a los pacientes de Medicaid o Medicare.”

Dr. Kanaan dice que la situación actual pone una carga significativa en los médicos que aceptan Medicaid o Medicare, porque tienen que atender a muchos más pacientes, y hay menos doctores aceptándolos. “En consecuencia, los pacientes saturan las salas de urgencias y de medicina interna, por lo que se convierte en un volumen significativo que aumenta con el tiempo.” ¿Tienes una solución? “Es difícil sugerir una solución en este punto sin grupos de presión, sin personas que están en el Congreso, porque las personas que toman estas decisiones están en Austin, donde tienen menos del 10% de la población dependiente de Medicaid. “Así que reducir el 1% de Medicare es reducir 8% para todo el Valle. Eso es enorme. Por eso, sin cabilderos, sin gente que nos represente en Austin o DC, es difícil desafiar al sistema.” ¿Qué te inspiró a ser médico?

“Mi papá, Dr. Bassam Ahman Kanaan; él es un radiólogo retirado y desde que yo era un niño, era todo lo que yo quería hacer.” Continuó, “de hecho, mi mamá tiene una carta de cuando yo

estaba en primer grado o quinto grado que le escribí a mi padre cuando estaba de viaje. Escribí, ‘Quiero ser como tú.

Quiero ser médico.’ Y ese ha sido mi objetivo desde que tengo memoria.” ¿Cómo conociste a tu esposa?

“Voy a dejar que ella te cuente esa historia. Suena mejor viniendo de ella,” dijo. Cuando esta conversación estaba teniendo lugar, su esposa Amira estaba con él; han estado casados desde 2006.

Ella dijo, “En realidad he conocido a su madre más tiempo que él. Yo la amo; amo a su madre, y ella me ama.” Ella continuó, “así que, cuando vino a visitar Siria, me vio a mí, y su madre, Abida Ghannam, le dijo: ‘Mírala, es hermosa,’ y otras cosas por el estilo; fue una especie de matrimonio arreglado y nos comprometimos después de dos semanas. Él solicitó mis papeles para venir a América y después de un año vine con él.”

Tienen dos hijos, Bassam 10, y Amir 3. “Ambos están en el modelaje y están disponibles para comerciales de televisión,” dijo la señora Kanaan. ¿Tiene aficiones o intereses?

“Esposa e hijos, y la política.”

en la política, y ha estado trabajando en el fondo en muchas campañas. Hoy, dice, “hacer un cambio viene con los que tienen las llaves, y para mí estoy aquí, estas son mis cuatro paredes, tengo esta llave. Sólo puedo ver a un paciente a la vez. Si tengo acceso a lograr hacer acciones legislativas y reformas donde pueda afectar cientos de personas al mismo tiempo, me sentiría que los pacientes estarían mejor de esa manera.”

El Dr. Kanaan y su esposa, Amira, aprecian el amor y el apoyo del Valle del Río Grande. Él dijo, “siendo alguien que no ha nacido, ni ha sido criado aquí, el ser acogido como familia, me da una gran cantidad de energía y una gran cantidad de estímulo para hacer de este lugar un lugar mejor, porque si me sintiera como un forastero, hubiera hecho las maletas y me hubiera marchado.”

a gala del Renaissance Cancer Foundation (fundación de Renaissance para el cáncer) anunció que recaudaron $345,700 durante su celebración anual de fiesta. Los muy necesarios fondos se utilizan para ayudar a los pacientes de cáncer en todo el Valle del Río Grande. Año tras año, los pacientes ayudados por este esfuerzo han afirmado que se sienten bendecidos.

El 3 de diciembre de 2017 fue la noche de una gran celebración, con ese propósito

el lugar utilizado para el evento fue el hermoso centro de conferencias Edinburg Conference Center at Renaissance. Qué gran noche, la combinación de invitados, la gente detrás de las escenas y los patrocinadores que hacen de este proyecto una realidad, disfrutaron de una noche de música y entretenimiento estilo Las Vegas, presentando al dos veces premiado como estrella del año de Las Vegas, Frankie Moreno. La celebración de la gala de este monumental esfuerzo de recaudación de fondos siempre es bien recibida por la comunidad del sur de Texas, ya que devuelven a los individuos que más lo necesitan.

Continuó, “David de Anda, presidente de Lone Star National Bank; vicepresidenta senior y director de mercadeo de Lone Star National Bank; Natasha Del Barrio, director ejecutiva; y Robert Lucio, director de operaciones (ambos del Bert Ogden Auto Group); Marissa Castañeda, jefe de operaciones y director de mercadeo; y Elizabeth Jondreau, directora interina de DHR Health Advanced Care Center.” Empresas patrocinadoras del evento; Lone Star National Bank, Doctors Hospital at Renaissance y el Bert Ogden Auto Group fueron representados por oficiales de alto rango respectivamente.

“Buenas noches a todos, espero que hayan tenido una maravillosa velada y gracias por estar apoyándonos por tantos años.” Safir dijo, “Vamos a ver un gran espectáculo esta noche.” También señaló que era importante recordar a las personas que no estaban presentes porque habían perdido la lucha contra el cáncer. Natasha Del Barrio, CEO de Bert Ogden Auto Group, “En nombre del grupo Bert Ogden Auto Group planeamos dedicar nuestra donación esta noche a Javier Martínez.” Ella dijo, “Bob y Janet Vackar tuvieron el placer de conocer a este joven hace unos dos años, y Janet dijo que él trajo mucha luz a su vida.”

Ella continuó: “El era un luchador, lleno de entusiasmo, y por desgracia perdió su batalla el 11 de noviembre hace unas semanas, y por lo tanto, esta noche Janet pidió que recordamos no sólo a los que continúan luchando, sino tambien a los que lamentablemente han perdido la batalla. Gracias.”

Bob y Janet Vacker son una pareja muy exitosa en la industria de concesionarios de automóviles. Ambos son filántropos genuinos que han ayudado a la gente de cada condición social. Su firma es un patrocinador muy importante para la gala anual presentada por Renaissance Cancer Foundation.

La ceremonia de presentación de cheques fue seguida de, como Safir dijo, “el arte de Frankie Moreno.” Agregó, “Esta noche van a presenciar al dos veces premiado estrella de espectáculo del año desde Las Vegas, directo de tener casa llena en el Carnegie Hall y el Kennedy Center. Trabaja con artistas famosos de todo el mundo; es un compositor muy famoso y un artista fabuloso. Siéntate, relájate y prepárate para Frankie Moreno.”

Frankie Moreno es un gran artista, pero hizo algo que dejo un tremendo impacto en todas las personas presentes. Dedicó una canción a Yoli Garza. “Me han dicho que hay una mujer llamada Yoli y que está muy triste porque recientemente perdió a su hijo en

una batalla contra el cáncer,” dijo Frankie Moreno.

El artista ha compuesto canciones para Celine Dion, Cristina Aguilera y otras. “Tengo un niño de esa misma edad, y me gustaría cantarte una canción especial esta noche, y espero que la música ayude un poco sólo por una noche.” Dijo, que inicialmente escribió una canción para Ray Charles para su último disco y falleció poco antes de que el álbum saliera. “Así, que esta canción ha estado guardada en un cajón,” dijo. Las primeras palabras de la canción eran, ‘It Was Some Kind Of Love’ (era un amor especial – en inglés). Frankie Moreno también hizo tiempo y abrazó a Yoli, esperando que con la música y sólo por esta noche estuviera ayudando a aliviar el dolor de su pérdida.

La meta de Renaissance Cancer Foundation es proveer a los pacientes con servicios para ayudarles

durante su batalla contra el cáncer, en este caso, la familia también recibió atención especial.

Desde su inicio en 1997, el Programa Valley Scholars ha continuado su misión de proveer oportunidades académicas, desarrollo de liderazgo y becas a estudiantes académicamente dotados y altamente motivados de los condados de Hidalgo y Starr. Durante los últimos 20 años, el Programa Valley Scholars ha proveído becas y desarrollo de liderazgo a 830 estudiantes del Valle del Rio Grande.
