M

elissa Uriegas, a doctor in dentistry, is working at her own practice named Uriegas Dentistry as an energetic professional who is eager to serve her patients. Just recently, she celebrated a ribbon cutting ceremony and completed the first year in her new practice location. The McAllen Chamber of Commerce did an excellent work inviting members to attend.

Dr. Uriegas has a lot to offer, she graduated from one of the best dental schools in Texas and has become a wonderful example for others. Her work and dedication to her industry inspire students with goals to become a dental doctor.

She is also a VAMOS scholar. This is unique because Dr. Uriegas shared with Mega Doctor News that being a VAMOS scholar made the big difference in her life.

The program gave her the opportunity to study versus having to work to sustain her education. Just like Dr. Uriegas,

The alliance, which was started

by Alonzo Cantu with the help of family and close friends has become a blessing for the younger generations in the Rio Grande Valley. Currently VAMOS is being led by a board of very dedicated residents; Johnny Oliva is their president. Daisy Martinez, the executive director for VAMOS is always available for the students participating in the scholarship program.

The Valley Alliance of Mentors for Opportunities VAMOS recently celebrated its 22nd Dr. Melissa Annual banquet.

Uriegas This was more than special, usually one million dollars in dispersed among the student recipients of the scholarship, this year VAMOS awarded to 85 deserving students 1.4 million dollars.

That deserves a loud WOW! On another note, The UTRGV School of Medicine continues its mission to close gaps in access to healthcare and expand educational

opportunities for its students with its three Area Health Education Centers (AHEC).

The School of Medicine celebrated the opening of its AHEC on Sept. 20 in La Victoria in Starr County. Other grand openings are being planned for San Carlos in Hidalgo County and at the Bob Clark Center in Cameron County.

Important news: The Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) issued the following statement: they are investigating the reported cases of acute flaccid myelitis (AFM) that occurred since mid-September in Minnesota children.

AFM is a poliolike syndrome that can cause paralysis or muscle weakness. It is a rare but potentially severe condition that can arise following an infection, and in some cases, it can lead to death, paralysis, or other long-term health impacts.

AFM affects the nervous system, causing muscles to weaken. It can be a complication following a viral infection, but environmental and genetic factors may also contribute to its development. AFM symptoms

include sudden muscle weakness in the arms or legs, sometimes following a respiratory illness. There are other symptoms; you will find more information about them inside this issue.

Also, in this issue, the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) reports that physicians, pharmacies and the public have been targeted by criminals posing as DEA agents. The DEA has issued notices to registrants and has provided the following advisory information: The United States Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) is aware that registrants are receiving telephone calls and emails by criminals identifying themselves as DEA employees or other law enforcement personnel. The criminals mask their telephone number on caller ID by showing the DEA Registration Support 800 number. There is more info inside.

D

octor Melissa Uriegas may, quite possibly, be the youngest doctor of dentistry that I have ever met. But I can tell you that she was the most fun to talk to.

Ever since she was twelve years old, she planned to be a dentist. It only took her one visit to a dental office to realize that that’s what she wanted to be, a doctor of dentistry. It took years of nourishing her vision and studying to get to where she wanted to be.

Originally from Edinburg, Dr. Uriegas attended Pharr-San Juan-Alamo ISD and graduated from PSJA North.

From there, she attended the University of Texas—Pan American (UTPA). With a smile on her face, she told Mega Doctor News, that she was the first high school student ever to be accepted into dental school in San Antonio. She said, “It was with a program called the DEAP, Dental Early Admission Program. The DEAP consisted of 3 years of undergraduate education, followed by 4 years of dental school. At the time, I wanted to go to San Antonio because it was the number one dental school in the country.”

Things changed for her when she was an undergraduate student and she visited The University of Texas School of Dentistry at Houston. By doing so, she realized that the dental school in Houston was calling her name. She decided to pursue her dental degree in Houston, where she had also been accepted into their dental program.

After graduating as a Doctor of Dental Surgery, Dr. Uriegas completed a hospitalbased residency program, known as the General Practice Residency, at the Monmouth Medical Center in Long Branch, New Jersey.

Being part of the hospital-based program was a unique and fulfilling experience.

She said, “I would take patients who were medically compromised into the OR and help them with all of their dental needs in one visit.”

After her residency, she worked in Cameron County for a few years where she practiced in private practice and hospital settings. “The office was right next to a hospital, so I was able to use my special training from the residency program in the hospital setting.”

One Visit to The Dentist Inspired Her to Be a Doctor of Dentistry she completed the General Practice Residency in New Jersey, Dr. Uriegas was nominated for the Texas Academy of General Dentistry’s Texas New Dentist of the Year 2016.

Dr. Uriegas believes in continuing education and has begun a year of training with The Dawson Academy.

“Through this advanced training, I plan on gaining the skills to make me the go-to-dentist of the Rio Grande Valley. If you have a dental problem that needs to be solved, I will be one of the few in our area to consistently provide the best, most conservative treatment and outcome for you and your family.”

Having her own private practice a l l o w s her time to learn and train more, and to acquire unique skills not often found in the region. Dr. Uriegas was persistent in meeting her goal.

She planned to have her practice within five to seven years after graduation, but by the t h i r d year,

How she found the location for her practice is very interesting. Dr. Uriegas said that she went to pay some dues for her dental study club to a dental surgeon on North 22nd St. in McAllen.

She had to park in front of a building that had been empty for a couple of years. Before walking all the way to pay her dues, she jumped as high as she could to peek over the fence, trying to find out more about the building.

Once she talked to the staff at the surgeon’s office, they told her it used to be a dental practice of a retired doctor. “I would like to see what it looks like.” She said, “It had green shag carpet, flower wallpaper, wood paneling, and all of the cabinetry was built very high up as the previous doctor was tall. He was about 6’3”, which is more than a foot taller than me.”

Dr. Uriegas loved the North 22nd street location, her research shows that dentistry in McAllen started in this area.

“The dental community used to call the area ‘El Grupo’ because there was a dentist at my current office location, next door to the left there is an oral surgeon, to the right of my office is another dentist, and behind that there used to be an orthodontist office.” For her, 4113 N. 22nd Street has a lot of history and is an excellent area to practice dentistry.

Last August, Dr. Uriegas completed a year in her new practice.

“We opened Uriegas Dentistry at the end of August 2017.”

Are you married? “Yes, I am married. I was setting up this office at

the same time I was planning a wedding.

We got married on July 8, 2017, and I opened Uriegas Dentistry weeks after. We had a lot of fun and our adventure continues,” she said.

Her husband, Michael Sullivan, DDS, is originally from the Fort Worth area.

“I told him the Rio Grande Valley was a great place to live and practice dentistry.

When he graduated, he moved here and worked in private practice for a few years, before becoming one of the dentists at the Veterans Administration in Harlingen.”

How many people work with you? “There are a lot of people that work with us behind the scenes to ensure a quality visit for our patients.

A few of our team members have over 20 years of experience in dentistry. Each one brings unique skills to our practice, and I am extremely grateful for their work ethic and commitment to our patients.”

One of the challenges that Dr. Uriegas sometimes faces is that she is young, and some patients do not realize she is the doctor. However, they are soon impressed with her knowledge and professionalism.

The other challenge is that people are afraid of dentistry. “Consequently, people delay getting treatment, which often leads to more invasive issues,” she said. “I think that would be the most frequent problem that we see.”

“We designed our office to feel like a home because our patients’ comfort is important. We hope to ease any worries or fears towards dental visits and procedures by taking the extra time to understand past experiences and future dental care goals.” Dr. Uriegas continued, “Making our patients’ experience with us a positive one is what we truly care about.” That is her main priority.

How It All Started It is important to say that Dr. Melissa Uriegas is a VAMOS scholar.

This means that she qualified to receive a four-year scholarship through The Valley Alliance of Mentors for Opportunities and Scholarships.

“VAMOS is an excellent resource because the scholarship that you get affords you the time to go and explore all the resources that you have at the university.” She said, “When I was there I was afforded the opportunity to study abroad. I traveled to, and learned in, seven different countries, thanks in part to receiving a VAMOS scholarship that allowed me to dedicate my time to study and earn good grades without struggling to pay for my education.”

She pointed out that the best part of VAMOS is the mentorship. “Even when I was in New Jersey, I would call VAMOS.” She says that she has a couple of Continued on next page

goals, “they are silly,” she says, but still, they are part of her bucket list. “I’d like to be the dentist for Oral-B, or the dentist for Colgate in their official company commercials.”

arlingen, Texas –The Valley Baptist Legacy Foundation has established a $50,000 endowed scholarship in honor of the foundation’s former executive director, Randall “Randy” Baker, who retired from his post June 30.

The Randall Baker Endowed Scholarship will support students at The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley School of Medicine who declare an intention to specialize in psychiatry, neurology or a related field in the neurosciences.

io Grande Valley –The UTRGV School of Medicine continues its mission to close gaps in access to health care and expand educational opportunities for its students with its three Area Health Education Centers (AHEC).

The School of Medicine celebrated the opening of its AHEC on Sept. 20 in La Victoria in Starr County. Other grand openings are being planned for San Carlos in Hidalgo County and at the Bob Clark Center in Cameron County.

The UTRGV School of Medicine last year received a five-year, $3.75 million grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Health Resources and Services Administration to develop the three AHECS, which are intended to: Help increase access to primary healthcare in rural and underserved areas.

Develop and enhance education and training networks within communities, academic institutions, and community-based organizations.

Teach medical students and students in other health-related disciplines about the social determinants of health and health disparities.

Dr. John Ronnau, Ph.D., senior associate dean for Community Health Partnerships at the UTRGV School of Medicine, said the AHEC grant provides a tremendous opportunity for the UTRGV School of Medicine to be of service and to engage in the community, which is predominantly rural and has an underserved population.

“It’s integral to our mission and it is in keeping with what the federal government, what HRSA, expects of us with this grant,” Ronnau said. “This grant is the perfect

The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley School of Medicine celebrated the grand opening of its Area Health Education Centers (AHEC) on Thursday, Sept. 20, in the La Victoria community in Starr County. The UTRGV School of Medicine received a five-year, $3.75 million grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Health Resources and Services Administration to develop the three AHECs, which will offer free healthcare to residents and educational opportunities for students enrolled in UTRGV’s health professions programs. The AHECs include primary healthcare centers operated by professional healthcare staff, faculty and students of the School of Medicine, School of Nursing and the College of Health Professions. All three schools are developing curriculum for students that will include offering credit for their work in the clinic and will develop

a pipeline program through which high school students interested in healthcarerelated fields can receive training.

Adrian Barrera, a second-year medical student from Starr County, said he is pleased to see the AHEC open in Starr County.

“It’s a very valuable resource,” he said. “As long as you can help people and bring resources to a community that really needs it – the community I grew up in – it’s just really heartwarming to see.”

The three AHEC facilities are being developed in partnership with Hidalgo, Cameron and Starr counties and the County Commissioner in the precinct where the AHEC is located.

Starr County Precinct 3 Commissioner Eloy Garza, who represents the community where the AHEC is located, said the AHEC will benefit all residents of Starr County.

He and Starr County Judge Eloy Vera emphasized to those who attended the grand opening that the center is for the community.

“This clinic is not for us,” Vera said. “It is for all of you.”

Rose Benavidez, president of the Starr County Industrial Foundation, also provided words of support for the center. Starr County Commissioners and other officials were in attendance.

The center, located at 532 Gabriela St., will operate two days a week, but Ronnau said those involved in theAHEC hope to expand services to five days a week over the next few years. MDN

n September 18, 2018, two local banks showed their commitment to fighting hunger. Vantage Bank Texas and Inter National Bank became title sponsors of Empty Bowls 2018. This is the largest and signature fundraising event for the Food Bank RGV. The 13th Annual Empty Bowls Luncheon and Auction became, once again, the talk of the region, bringing together champions of philanthropy, all united to feed the hungry.

Michelle pointed out that through other programs, we teach and inspire families to eat healthy and grow strong. Millions of pounds of donated produce help families maintain overall wellness.

Hace poco, ella celebró su primer año con un corte de listón en su nueva clínica. La Cámara de Comercio de McAllen hizo un excelente trabajo invitando a todos sus miembros a esta celebración.

La Dra. Uriegas tiene mucho que ofrecer. Ella se graduó de una de las mejores Facultades dentales en Texas y se ha convertido en un perfecto modelo para muchos. Su trabajo y dedicación a su carrera inspira a estudiantes con metas de hacerse algún día doctores dentistas.

Ella es también una becada de VAMOS. Esto es único porque la Dra. Uriegas compartió con Mega Doctor News que siendo una estudiante becada

L

a Doctora Melissa Uriegas posiblemente es la doctora de odontología más joven que he conocido. Pero puedo asegurar que es la más divertida con la que he hablado.

Desde que tenía doce años, planeaba ser dentista. Sólo le llevó una visita a un consultorio dental para darse cuenta de que eso es lo que quería ser, médico de odontología. Tomó años de nutrir su visión y estudiar para llegar a donde quería estar.

Originaria de Edinburg, la Dra. Uriegas asistió al distrito escolar de Pharr-San Juan-Alamo y se graduó de PSJA North. A partir de ahí, asistió a la University of Texas —Pan American (UTPA). Con una sonrisa, le dijo a Mega Doctor News que ella fue el primer estudiante de preparatoria que fue aceptada en la escuela dental en la Universidad de San Antonio. “Fue con un programa llamado Dental Early Admission Program (DEAP, Programa Dental de Admisión Temprana). El DEAP consistió en 3 años de Educación de pregrado, seguido por 4 años de escuela dental. En ese momento, quería ir a San Antonio porque era la escuela dental número uno en el país”.

Las cosas cambiaron para ella cuando siendo estudiante universitaria visitó la Facultad de Odontología de la Universidad de Texas en Houston. Ella decidió perseguir su preparación odontológica en Houston, donde también había sido aceptada en su programa dental.

Al recibirse como Doctor en cirugía dental, la Dra. Uriegas completo un programa de residencia en hospital, conocido como la residencia de práctica general, en el centro médico de Monmouth en Long Branch, New Jersey.

Ser parte del programa basado en el hospital era una experiencia única. Ella dijo, “yo atendía pacientes que estaban médicamente comprometidos en el Cuarto de Operaciones y ayudaba con todas sus necesidades dentales en una sola visita”.

permite darse el tiempo para aprender y entrenar más, y para adquirir habilidades únicas no frecuentemente encontradas en la región. La Dra. Uriegas fue persistente en el cumplimiento de su objetivo. Su plan era tener su propio consultorio cinco o siete años después de su graduación, pero para el tercer año ya estaba en medio de la creación de su consultorio dental.

Encontró la ubicación de su consultorio de una forma muy interesante. La Dra. Uriegas dijo que fue a pagar algunas cuotas por su club de estudio dental a un cirujano dental en la calle North 22 Street en McAllen.

Tuvo que estacionarse delante de un edificio que había estado vacío durante un par de años. Antes de caminar todo el camino para pagar sus cuotas, saltó para echar un vistazo detrás de la cerca, tratando de saber más sobre el edificio.

Una vez que hablo con el personal en la oficina del cirujano, supo que solía ser una práctica dental de un médico jubilado. “Me gustaría verlo”. Ella dijo, “Tenía alfombra verde, papel tapiz de flores, paneles de madera, y todos los gabinetes habían sido construidos muy altos, ya que el médico anterior medía unos 6’3 pies, más de un pie más alto que yo”.

La Dra. Uriegas quedó encantada con la ubicación en North 22 St., su investigación muestra que la odontología en McAllen comenzó en esta área. “La comunidad dental conocía esta área como ‘El Grupo’ ya que había un dentista en mi oficina actual, al lado izquierdo hay un cirujano oral, a la derecha de mi oficina está otro dentista, y detrás solía ser la oficina de un ortodontista.” Para ella, el 4113 N. 22 St. tiene mucha historia y es una excelente zona para practicar odontología.

En agosto, la Dra. Uriegas cumplió un año en su nuevo consultorio.

“Abrimos Uriegas Dentistry a finales de agosto del 2017”. ¿Está casada? “Sí, estoy casada. Al mismo tiempo en que establecía mi consultorio, estaba planeando mi boda. Nos casamos el 8 de julio del 2017, y abrimos Uriegas Dentistry unas semanas después. Nos divertimos mucho y nuestra aventura continúa”, dijo.

Su marido, el Dr. Michael Sullivan, es originario de el área de Fort Worth. “Le dije que el Valle era un gran lugar para vivir y practicar odontología.

Cuando él se graduó, se mudó aquí y trabajó en un consultorio privado durante unos años, antes de convertirse en uno de los dentistas de Veterans Administration en Harlingen”. ¿Cuánta gente trabaja contigo? “Hay un montón de gente que trabaja conmigo tras los bastidores para asegurar una visita de calidad para nuestros pacientes.

Algunos miembros de nuestro equipo tienen más de 20 años de experiencia en odontología. Cada uno aporta habilidades únicas a nuestra práctica, y estoy muy agradecida por su ética de trabajo y compromiso con nuestros pacientes”.

Uno de los desafíos que la Dra. Uriegas afrenta es que ella es bastante joven y algunos pacientes no se dan cuenta que ella es la doctora.

Sin embargo, al poco tiempo de conocerla quedan impresionados con su conocimiento y profesionalismo.

El otro desafío es que la gente le tiene miedo a la odontología. “Por esto, la gente retrasa recibir tratamiento, y esto a menudo conduce a cuestiones mas invasivas,” dijo. “Creo que ese sería el problema más frecuente que tenemos”.

“Diseñamos nuestra oficina para sentirnos como un hogar porque el confort de nuestros pacientes es importante. Esperamos aliviar cualquier preocupación o temor hacia las visitas y procedimientos dentales tomando el tiempo extra para entender las experiencias pasadas y las futuras metas de cuidado dental”. La Dra. Uriegas continuó, “Hacer que la experiencia de nuestros pacientes con nosotros sea positiva es lo que realmente nos importa”.

Eso es lo más importante para ella.

Cómo empezó todo Es importante decir que la Dra. Melissa Uriegas es una alumna de VAMOS. Esto significa que ella calificó para recibir una beca de cuatro años a través de The Valley Alliance of Mentors for Opportunities and Scholarships (La alianza de mentores del valle para oportunidades y becas).

“VAMOS es un excelente recurso porque la beca que obtienes te ofrece el tiempo para ir y explorar todos los recursos que tienes en la Universidad”.

Viajé y estudié en siete países diferentes, gracias en parte a recibir una beca de VAMOS es que me permitió dedicar mi tiempo para estudiar y obtener buenas calificaciones sin tener que luchar para pagar mi educación”.

Señaló que la mejor parte de VAMOS son las tutorías.

“Incluso cuando estaba en Nueva Jersey, yo llamaba a VAMOS.” Ella dice que tiene un par de metas, “son tontas”, dice, pero aún así, son parte de sus metas de vida. “Me gustaría llegar a ser la dentista de Oral-B o de Colgate en sus comerciales oficiales”.

La Dra. Uriegas es muy buena en jugar al golf. Jugó NCAA Division I Golf en la University of Texas — Pan American.

La Dra. Uriegas está muy involucrado con la odontología organizada; ha servido como: Patronato de la Asociación Nacional de Odontología Hispana; Exalumna de la prestigiosa Asociación Americana de Odontología – Instituto para la diversidad en el liderazgo; y delegado en la cámara de representantes de la asociación dental de Texas.

También es miembro del Seattle Study Club – del sur de Texas, y la Academia de Odontología general. “Puedo ver a mí mismo un día ser presidente de una de estas grandes asociaciones y ayudar a hacer la diferencia”.

La Dra. Uriegas es parte importante de la exploración en odontología.

El ADA IDL está diseñado para mejorar las habilidades de liderazgo de los dentistas que pertenecen a orígenes raciales, étnicos y/o de género que tradicionalmente han sido subrepresentados en roles de liderazgo. A través de esto, ella ha viajado a Chicago a la sede de la ADA para tomar unos cursos.

“Tomamos cursos de liderazgo que demuestran cómo utilizar nuestros conocimientos y destrezas en Odontología para regresarle algo a nuestra comunidad “. Con este conocimiento, la Dra. Uriegas creó y coordina el programa: ‘Exploración

en odontología.’ Este programa que dura todo el año fue diseñado para motivar, educar y preparar a los estudiantes para la educación superior y los estudios continuos en programas profesionales relacionados con la odontología.

“Así es cómo trabajo en conjunto con los estudiantes de UTRGV. Cuatro veces al año, invito a los estudiantes a Uriegas Dentistry para ayudar a fomentar sus pasiones por la odontología.

Entonces, hago cursos para que ellos aprendan y exploren la odontología”.

“Para los estudiantes puede ser complicado obtener la oportunidad de hablar con médicos y especialistas.

Como estos especialistas son mis

colegas, les he dicho ‘Hay que trae a estos estudiantes aquí para estimular su deseo de perseguir una vida en odontología.’

Eso es algo que espero continuar”.

“Estamos construyendo una tradición en Uriegas Dentistry, una tradición fundada en la calidad de servicio, la atmósfera, la hospitalidad, y de familia, porque valoramos a todos y cada uno de los pacientes,” ella finalizó.

Fundación Legacy Valley Baptist Establece Fondo de Becas para Estudiantes de Medicina

arlingen, Texas – La Fundación Legacy Valley Baptist ha establecido un fondo de becas de $50,000 en honor de su ex Director Ejecutivo, Randall “Randy” Baker, quien se jubiló de su puesto el pasado 30 de junio.

El Fondo de Becas Randall Baker apoyará a los estudiantes de la Facultad de Medicina de la Universidad de Texas Rio Grande Valley, quienes declaren la intención de especializarse en psiquiatría, neurología o una especialidad relacionada con el campo de las neurociencias.

Al declarar los estudiantes médicos su intención de especializarse en su tercer año de estudios, los recipientes La Fundación Legacy Valley Baptist estableció un fondo de becas para ayudar económicamente a los estudiantes de la Facultad de de las becas Randall Baker Medicina de la Universidad de Texas Rio Grande Valley, quienes declaren la intención de especializarse en psiquiatría, neurología o estarán en tercer o cuarto año, una especialidad médica relacionada con las neurociencias. l Departamento de Salud de Minnesota (MDH) emitió la siguiente declaración: “Se están investigando los casos de Mielitis Aguda Flácida (AFM, siglas en inglés) aparecidos desde mediados de septiembre en algunos niños de Minnesota. AFM es un síndrome parecido al de la poliomielitis que puede causar parálisis o debilidad muscular. Es una enfermedad rara pero potencialmente severa que puede presentarse después de una infección y, en algunos casos, causar la muerte, parálisis o impactar la salud con efectos a largo plazo.

AFM afecta al sistema nervioso, causando que los músculos se debiliten.

También puede ser después de una infección viral, pero factores ambientales y genéticos pueden contribuir a su desarrollo. Los

síntomas del AFM incluyen debilidad muscular repentina en los brazos o las piernas y algunas veces sigue después de una enfermedad respiratoria. Otros síntomas también pueden ser: Debilidad del cuello o rigidez.

Parpados caídos o parálisis facial.

Dificultad para tragar o para hablar.

Los investigadores de enfermedades de MDH están trabajando tenazmente con proveedores del cuidado de la salud para obtener información acerca de los casos.

El Departamento también está en contacto con los Centros de Control y Prevención de Enfermedades (CDC) para compartir información.

Por razones no totalmente entendidas el AFM afecta a niños. Todos los casos recientes en Minnesota han ocurrido a niños menores de 10 años y todos fueron hospitalizados. Los casos que han sido reportados provienen de Twin Cities, en el centro y noreste de Minnesota.

Hubo un incremento de los casos de AFM a nivel nacional en el 2014. Los investigadores de enfermedades creen que este fue un enlace al incremento de enfermedades respiratorias de niños causados por un virus conocido como enterovirus D 68 (EVD68). Minnesota tuvo tres casos de AFM ese año. Desde entonces

típicamente hemos visto menos de un caso por año.

Desde que el AFM puede desarrollarse como resultado de una infección viral, el MDH recomienda que los padres y niños tomen pasos básicos para evitar infecciones y mantenerse saludables: Lavarse las manos con frecuencia y limitar su exposición a gérmenes.

Cubrirse la boca o nariz al estornudar o toser.

Quedarse en casa si está enfermo.

Mantenerse al día con sus vacunas.

Protéjase a sí mismo y a los niños de piquetes de zancudos si pasan tiempo afuera.

Si los padres observan síntomas potenciales de AFM en su niño/a, (por ejemplo, si él o ella no usan un brazo) deben contactar a un proveedor de cuidado de la salud lo más pronto posible. El AFM puede ser diagnosticado examinando el sistema nervioso de la persona, tomando un MRI scan y examinando el líquido de la espina dorsal. Es importante que los exámenes se hagan lo más pronto posible después de que alguien desarrolle los síntomas. Mientras no haya un tratamiento específico para el AFM los doctores recomiendan ciertas intervenciones caso por caso. MDN

io Grande Valley – La Facultad de Medicina de UTRGV continúa su misión de cerrar las brechas para el acceso de cuidado de la salud y expandir oportunidades educacionales para sus estudiantes con sus tres Centros de Educación de la Salud de Área (AHEC, siglas en inglés).

La Facultad de Medicina celebró la apertura de su AHEC el pasado 20 de septiembre en La Victoria, en el Condado Starr. Otras grandes aperturas están planificadas, la de San Carlos, en el Condado Hidalgo y la Bob Clark Center, en el Condado Cameron.

La Facultad de Medicina de UTRGV el año pasado recibió un fondo por cinco años de $3.75 millones del Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) del Departamento de Salud y Servicios Humanos de los Estados Unidos para desarrollar los tres centros AHECS, los que intentan: Ayudar a incrementar el acceso a cuidado primario de la salud en áreas rurales y de escasos recursos; desarrollar y promover la educación y redes de entrenamiento dentro de sus comunidades, instituciones académicas y organizaciones basadas en la comunidad; y enseñar a los estudiantes médicos y estudiantes en otras áreas relacionadas a la salud acerca de las disparidades de salud y los determinantes sociales de la salud.

“Es parte integral de nuestra misión y acuerda con lo que el gobierno federal, lo que el HRSA espera de nosotros con esta donación. Esta donación nos brinda la oportunidad perfecta para cumplir con las necesidades de esta comunidad, pero no sucedería sin esta asociación y eso es lo bonito de todo”, dijo el Dr. Ronnau.

Las AHEC incluyen centros de cuidado de salud primario operados por equipo, facultad y estudiantes profesionales del cuidado de la salud de la Facultad de Medicina, Escuela de Enfermería y Profesionales del Cuidado de la Salud.

Las tres escuelas están desarrollando un currículo para estudiantes que incluirá ofrecer créditos por su trabajo en la clínica y desarrollará un programa relacionado con el cuidado de la salud para que los

estudiantes de Preparatoria interesados en los campos relacionados con la salud puedan recibir entrenamiento.

Adrián Barrera, estudiante en su segundo año de medicina del Condado Starr, dice que él está contento de ver que el AHEC se haya abierto en el Condado Starr. “Es un recurso invaluable mientras que pueda ayudar a la gente y traer recursos a la comunidad que verdaderamente los necesita – la comunidad en la que yo crecí.

Eso es verdaderamente alentador”.

Las tres instalaciones AHEC están siendo desarrolladas en asociación con los condados Hidalgo, Cameron y Starr, y con el Comisionado del Condado respectivo, donde el AHEC está ubicado.

Eloy Garza, Comisionado del Precinto 3 del Condado Starr, quien representa a la comunidad donde el AHEC está localizado, dijo que el AHEC beneficiará a todos los residentes del Condado Starr: “El AHEC

definitivamente tendrá un gran impacto, porque hay una gran necesidad de servicios en nuestra comunidad, en especial en esta área, donde muchos de los residentes son trabajadores temporales del campo”.

Eloy Garza y el Juez Eloy Vera del Condado Starr enfatizaron a quienes estuvieron presentes para esta gran apertura de este centro para la comunidad: “Esta clínica no es para nosotros, es para todos ustedes”, dijo el juez Vera.

Rosa Benavidez, Presidenta de la Fundación Industrial del Condado Starr, también dio unas palabras apoyando al Centro. Los Comisionados del Condado Starr y otros oficiales estuvieron presentes también. Este Centro está ubicado en la Calle Gabriela 532, y estará abierto dos días a la semana, pero el Dr. Ronnau, anunció que los participantes en el AHEC esperan expandir los servicios a los cinco días de la semana en los siguientes años.
