HBO Obesity Series Showing Texas Schools Debuts

omptroller Susan Combs, who appears in a new HBO documentary series on obesity, championed the need for families to pay close attention to their children's health.

The four-part series, The Weight of the Nation is part of a public health campaign aimed at reducing obesity. Part three of the series, "Children in Crisis," was shown at the Blanton Museum of Art at the University of Texas at Austin.

“I just hope for parents with young children who may be overweight, please help take charge of your children’s health,” Combs said.

torrent of changes have besieged the Rio Grande Valley's health care delivery system, causing treatment clinics to curtail their services, pharmacies to close, and creating an access to care issue that has left thousands of Medicaid patients without healthcare.

At a news conference on April 25, 2012 at the Mission Chamber of Commerce, Representative Sergio Muñoz, Jr. explained the new policies that the Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) has adopted regarding their Medical Transportation Program.

The state's re-interpretation of the law and pertinent rules have caused a major curtailment to access to care for children who are served by children's therapy centers.

Rep. Muñoz said that he has had several meetings with the Commission to look for solutions to the challenges that the changes have created. Regarding changes to the MTP, Muñoz encourages all providers to abide by the current policy changes, but pledges to continue his work to find a compromise that will offer relief.

At a recent meeting with HHSC Executive Commissioner Tom Suehs, Senator Juan Hinojosa, Rep. Sergio Muñoz Jr., and Suehs mutually agreed that a regional approach has to be taken when considering such important state policy.

"A one-size-fits-all approach is not appropriate in this case," continued Muñoz. "The health care of our children is much too critical of an issue to hastily develop state policy that effects a certain sector of the state much more than another.

Rep. Muñoz has called for HHSC to suspend the new MTP policies, but to date the agency has no plans to do so. He and other Valley legislators are also calling for the agency to cease any new policies or rules that would cause a disruption in services, saying that the medical community requires a chance to stabilize.

According to his last words, Munoz said that meetings would continue until a set of solutions can be agreed upon. MDN

STBHC will honor the Hidalgo County Sheriff's Office this month to highlight its commitment to helping those with mental illness get the help they need. Sheriff Lupe Trevino accepted the Community Service Award on behalf of the Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office and its law enforcement officers.

South Texas Behavioral Health Center, the largest private inpatient program in South

Texas, treating a wide variety of mental health disorders in children, teens, adults, and the elderly. "When our mentally ill adults and children are institutionalized, it costs us monetarily as a society, but also it costs the family so much grief. We can help break this cycle by working together with partner agencies."

"The Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office is a regular at our training events, the deputies seek knowledge to better handle situations, they stay on top of trends and communicate what they see in the field to those of us in the treatment facility. Communication is really the key here," Rodriguez said.

STBHC conducts regular training seminars on topics such as crisis intervention for local law enforcement agencies. STBHC also reaches out to area school districts to educate on preventing youth suicide.

Khaimchand Panday a specialist in Orthopedic Surgery and Hand Surgery based in McAllen, Texas, has had the opportunity to work not only in different cities but also in different countries.

Dr. Khaimchand Panday has worked around the world and holds medical licenses in Texas, Washington State, the United Kingdom, and Barbados in the West Indies. He started his medical career by receiving his preclinical medical training at the University of Ibadan in Nigeria.

It is important to note that a hand surgeon uses special techniques to work on hands – a unique area of the body with small bones, joints, ligaments, tendons, muscle and nerves that all need to be in good working order to function well together.

Dr. Panday went to the University of the West Indies to complete his clinical medical training. He also worked in several hospitals located in the West Indies and the United Kingdom.

In September of 1990 he began a Northern Region Post Graduate Orthopedic Training Program that is affiliated with The University of Newcastle upon Tyne, in the United Kingdom and approved by the Royal College of Surgeons and the British Orthopedic Association.

Dr. Panday pointed out that most hand surgeons are trained as general surgeons, plastic surgeons, or orthopedic surgeons, with hands as a subspecialty.

Many also have expertise in problems with the elbow, arm and shoulder. Hand surgeons treat problems such as carpal tunnel syndrome; tennis elbow; wrist pain; arthritis; nerve and tendon injuries; and fractures of the hand, wrist, or forearm.

Dr. Panday’s education through this training consisted of rotations through six teaching hospitals for six months each.

During this time he specifically focused and gained experience in the areas of traumatic orthopedics. He then completed his orthopedic residency training at McMaster University in Canada.

His post-residency clinical fellowship was undertaken at the Hamilton General Hospital, which is the regional trauma center for the southcentral region of the province of Ontario and is the second busiest level one trauma center in Canada. During this time he was a trauma team leader in the trauma program and was also involved in the teaching of residents and medical students in orthopedic and trauma care. After he completed the program and successfully completed the certifying examination in orthopedic surgery, the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada awarded him the FRCSC Degree.

In 1998 he was recruited by Rio Grande Regional Hospital Texas and came to McAllen to provide hand and upper extremity surgery. He currently

Recognizing Symptoms of a Stroke

A free and low-cost screenings for stroke, lipid panel (cholesterol), blood glucose, and blood pressure, and a diabetes risk assessment was held during a “Stroke Awareness Community Health Fair” on May 12 at Valley Baptist Medical Center in Harlingen (on the first floor of the South Tower of the hospital, in the Woodward Conference Center).

The lipid panel, which requires fasting, and blood glucose screenings was provided free for the first 100 people; with additional low cost screenings available throughout the health fair.

In addition, Dr. Victoria A. Parada, Board-Certified Vascular Neurologist, spoke on “TIA (Transient Ischemic Attack) ... Are You at Risk?” during the same event.

Dietitian, Illiana Guerra, RD, CSP, LD, Clinical Nutrition Manager for Valley BaptistHarlingen, also spoke on “Eating Healthy for Stroke Prevention.”

The health fair was held as part of “Stroke Awareness Month” during the month of May. Stroke is the nation’s third leading cause of death and a leading cause of disability.

Each year in the United States, about 795,000 people suffer a stroke. Of stroke survivors, 22 percent of men and 24 percent of women die within a year, and for those aged 65 and older, the percentages are even higher.

Stroke is a type of cardiovascular disease that affects the arteries leading to the brain and the arteries within the brain.

A stroke occurs when a clot or bursts either block a blood vessel that carries oxygen and nutrients to the brain. When that happens, part of the brain cannot get the blood (and oxygen) it needs, and that part of the brain starts to die.

Learn the following warning signs of stroke and teach them to others – because with stroke, every second counts: *Sudden numbness or weakness of the face, arm or leg – especially on one side of the bod*Sudden confusion, trouble speaking or understanding, Sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes, Sudden trouble walking, dizziness, loss of balance or coordination or Sudden severe headache with no known cause.

Stroke is a medical emergency – call 911 immediately if you experience symptoms.

Remember: when it comes to stroke, the sooner that treatment begins, the better the patient’s chances of surviving without disabilities. At Valley Baptist

Medical Center in Harlingen and Brownsville, a clot-busting medication called tPA is used when medically indicated to reverse strokes – but the medication must be given within 4½ hours from the start of symptoms of a possible stroke.

Anyone suffering a stroke who is lucky enough to reach the emergency room at Valley Baptist Medical centerHarlingen will soon meet Dr. Victoria Parada, when she is not attending to stroke victims, she is trying to spread the message of how important it is to recognize the symptoms of a stroke and not delay seeking medical attention. Nearly seven out of 10 victims of stroke do not get the proper treatment they need after symptoms begin, she said. “Seventy percent of the stroke victims don’t reach the hospital within the first three hours after the stroke symptoms begin because

Dr. Victoria Parada they lack awareness of the importance of prompt recognition and treatment of symptoms of stroke,” she said. “Every minute spent without treatment means more brain cells die.” “Our Hispanic population is greatly affected by this, with vascular disease,” Parada said. “Strokes

are very common due to the high number of people in the Rio Grande Valley who suffer from diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol. A lot of them don’t have access to resources,” she said.

Dr. Parada is a native of Guatemala; she completed studies at Francisco Marroquin University Medical School in Guatemala City.

She then took four years of further training in neurology at the University of South Alabama in Mobile, Ala. She then was chief resident in neurology at the university hospital system there.

Because of her desire to encourage and offer hope to stroke survivors and their caregivers, Dr. Victoria Parada helped to establish the H.O.P.E. (Haven Offering Patient Encouragement) Stroke Support Group in the Valley in January of 2011. Her commitment to this group is demonstrated by her willingness to serve on the H.O.P.E. Advisory Board and to offer her expertise as its Medical Advisor. MDN

AN ANTONIO) — H-E-B has named 25 competitors from across Texas in its first-ever Slim Down Showdown Challenge for customers. The 16-week challenge is designed to provide contestants with the education and tools they need to live a healthier lifestyle and the chance to win a $10,000 grand prize or a $5,000 “fan favorite” prize.

Earlier this year, H-E-B invited Texans to apply online at heb.com and received more than 500 applications.

Contestants were selected based on their willingness and desire to embrace the program, and to publicly share their journey and the resulting lifestyle changes with the public through blogs and vlogs.

In June, all contestants will come to San Antonio to participate in an intensive four-and-a-half day wellness program with experts from H-E-B, Methodist Healthcare and the Cooper Aerobics Center. H-E-B will manage the contest, as well as overall nutritional and fitness education.

Methodist Healthcare will provide medical oversight and testing for the program and Cooper will provide expert speakers and ongoing health coaching.

Once they return home,

H-E-B contestants will receive weekly coaching and support in addition to the meal plans and fitness goals established during the wellness program. Overall winners will be announced on October 7 at a Grand Finale celebration held in conjunction with the fall Siclovia

H-E-B started the Slim Down Showdown internally in 2010 with 15 Partner contestants, who together lost more than 550 pounds in a 12-week period.

The Partner contestants lost a total of 460 pounds and 58 inches, and inspired more than 25,000 coworkers to follow them along on their journey through blogs and vlogs.

On March 30, H-E-B named Chris Sonnier, a shelf edge process manager at the H-E-B headquarters in San Antonio, as the champion of its second-annual Slim Down Showdown competition.

Sonnier lost 53 pounds and nine inches, and gained a new outlook on life.

Dr. Salameh is Back with State-of-the-Art Urology Center in McAllen

T

he Salameh Urology Institute & Surgery Center originally based in Mission Texas has moved to the heart of the medical center surrounded by three of the largest hospitals in McAllen. The new office is located at 1801 South 5th Street, Suite 104 in the McAllen Doctors Center building.

Dr. R. Nicolas Salameh took the time to assess different locations in the Valley area and decided to locate his new offices in the central medical center zone of the Valley around McAllen Medical Center, Rio Grande Regional Medical Center and the Heart Hospital.

The new offices have been completely rebuilt and configured for urological specialty as well as other types of medicine related to healthy living, and managements of lifestyle, of which there will be a proper announcement at a later date.

The new office has been designed to have all the capabilities that they had in the old office as well as the regular visits to the hospital. “We have a wonderful hospital in which to work so my rounds to the hospital are now reestablished,” Dr. Salameh stated.

Dr. Salameh will be back as of June 1, 2012 providing full services in terms of Urinary Incontinence for Men & Women, Sexual Dysfunction, Stone Therapy/ Kidney Stone Disease as well as Vasectomy and other in-office procedures. His new office location also has an On-Site Digital Laboratory and State-of-the-Art Diagnostic Center.

Dr. Salameh told Mega Doctor News that he would work with gynecologists as their assistant as they perform hysterectomies and in conjunction he would perform a complete reconstruction of the pelvis to resolve urinary incontinence in women.

Another area he would be focusing on is sterilization (Vasectomy) as the method of preventing pregnancy. According to Dr. Salameh this is the chosen method of birth control and also the most assured and the most inexpensive version of prevention. He noted that this is a simple procedure performed in his office under light sedation. The spouse can also be present and patients can usually watch on TV in the surgical suite while the procedure is being done. This takes about 30 minutes and if this is done on a Friday, the patient can go home, recuperate during the weekend and be ready to return to work on Monday.

He pointed out that after the vasectomy the patient is not immediately sterile because active sperm remain in the semen for a period of time. It may take 15 to 20 ejaculations and several weeks before your semen is free of sperm.

Your doctor will test the semen, perhaps several times over several weeks, and let you know when you can safely consider the vasectomy to be complete. This may be as long as two months. “In these cases

Dr. Salameh also does all prostate evaluations for malignancy, prostate enlargement, prostate treatment to improve urination stream and to also improve the ability to empty the bladder.

“We do all of these services in the office.”

The surgery to shrink the prostate or to decrease the volume of the prostate to take the pressure off the urinary tube (urethra) and to allow the patient to urinate more completely and empty the bladder better is also done in the office with no anesthesia but with oral sedation that the patient can regulate himself.

He said the work up would show what the starting point is and three months after he will do the work up again which will show what the final result is to demonstrate that there is a significant change.

Whatever is the requirement in the realm of urology Dr. Salameh is able to provide. Like he says after a nice break of a few weeks while remodeling his new office location; he is ready to get “back on the saddle and ride”.

His new office will be open as of June 1, 2012, as the original opening date was delayed due to the March 29, 2012 hailstorm that slowed work at least twice.

Originally from Sulphur Springs (east of Dallas), Dr. Hulen completed a residency in internal medicine at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas, where she was appointed Chief Resident in her final year; and a fellowship in infectious disease at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas. She is boardcertified in internal medicine, infectious disease, and undersea and hyperbaric medicine.

Dr. Hulen has served as co-chair for the Dallas chapter of “Save A Leg, Save A Life,” a nonprofit organization that promotes salvaging of patients’ limbs and the prevention of amputations because of diabetic foot ulcers.

This year, the National Mental Health Association is promoting “Do More for 1 in 4,” a call to action to help the 1 in 4 American adults who live with a diagnosable, treatable mental health condition and the fact that they can go on to live full and productive lives.

“We want people to know that while mental health conditions are common, they are extremely treatable and individuals go on to recover and lead full and productive lives,” said Dr. Jose Igoa, Medical Director of Renaissance Behavioral Center. Igoa said too many

people who are living with a mental health condition never seek or receive help due to stigma, lack of information, cost, or lack of health care insurance coverage—as high as 50 percent.

“We want to help our families, friends and co-workers who may be reluctant to ask for help or don’t know where to find it,” stated Igoa.

He continues, “We have an incredible amount of knowledge about how to identify and even prevent mental health conditions. There are tested tools available that can help every person face difficult times and challenges and improve their resiliency.” Igoa finished, “It’s important that we spread the word about mental health awareness month and the services available in our community.”

Two months later, Mrs. Villarreal said the four children are doing great and are growing so fast. She gives credit to the excellent staff of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at McAllen Medical Center and her great team of doctors for making the family she has today possible.

“I would like to thank all the NICU staff, all the neonatologists and all the nurses for taking care of my babies as if they were theirs. Sadly, we lost one, but we thank God for letting us have him for 3 months, and now all my daughters and sons have a little angel taking care of them,” Mrs. Villarreal said. MDN

iversos cambios amenazan al sistema del cuidado de la salud en el Valle del Río Grande causando a varias clínicas el recorte a sus servicios y el cierre de algunas farmacias, creando además un problema de acceso al cuidado médico que deja sin atención a miles de pacientes de Medicaid.

El Representante Sergio Muñoz, Jr., en conferencia de prensa ofrecida el pasado 25 de abril en la Cámara de Comercio de Mission, explicó las nuevas políticas que la Comisión de Servicios Humanos y de la Salud (HHSC, siglas en inglés) ha adoptado acerca de Programa de Transporte Médico.

La reinterpretación del estado de las leyes y reglas pertinentes ha causado un recorte al acceso médico para los niños quienes eran atendidos en los centros de terapia infantil.

El primer cambio legislativo llegó con los recortes al reembolso a los médicos que sirven a los pacientes

Luego el pasado primero de marzo, el nuevo sistema de cuidado médico para los pacientes de Medicaid fue cambiado en el sur de Texas a “cuidado administrado”, donde un grupo de organizaciones fueron nombradas para administrar el programa de Medicaid. Se calcula que 400,000 residentes han resultado afectados.

Durante las semanas de la transición controversial al manejo de cuidado, las organizaciones Managed Care (Manejo de Cuidado) por medio de los directores de beneficios farmacéuticos, permitieron la reducción de un conjunto de reembolsos a los farmacistas, forzando a muchas de las farmacias locales a cerrar sus puertas.

Los últimos de estos cambios son dos a mediados de marzo, la política de Health and Human Services Commission cambió a su Programa de Transporte Médico (MTP, Medical Transportation Program). El primero de estos cambios no permite el transporte de niños a clínicas para sus terapias que sean menores de quince años, a menos que sean acompañados por un padre o guardián, y el segundo cambio es que en el centro de terapia se permitirá la terapia solo si un padre o guardián o un adulto elegible dé su consentimiento y esté presente. Este cambio ha creado un efecto devastador en los pacientes y en los proveedores

estos servicios terapéuticos.

El representante Muñoz dijo que él ha asistido a varias reuniones con la Comisión para buscar soluciones a estos retos que esos cambios han creado. Acerca de los cambios a la MTP, Muñoz anima a todos los proveedores a cumplir con los cambios de esta política, pero promete continuar trabajando para encontrar un compromiso que ofrecerá alivio.

En una reunión con el Comisionado Ejecutivo de la HHSC, Tom Suehs; el Senador Juan Hinojosa, el Representante Sergio Muñoz, Jr., acordaron mutuamente que un enfoque regional tiene tener lugar cuando consideren importantes políticas estatales.

“Una talla única no le queda a todos en este caso. El cuidado de salud de nuestros niños es un asunto demasiado crítico para una política estatal hecha apresuradamente que afecta negativamente a ciertos sectores del estado más que a otros.

cALLEN – El mes de mayo, Mes de la Concientización de la Salud Mental, el Centro South Texas Behavioral Health Center (STBHC) reconoció a las agencias que abogan por la población con enfermedades mentales y trabajan por romper los estigmas asociados con esta población muy vulnerable.

Este mes el Centro STBHC honró a la oficina del Sheriff del Condado de Hidalgo para destacar su compromiso de ayudar a aquellos con enfermedades mentales a obtener la ayuda médica que necesitan. El Sheriff Lupe Treviño aceptó el Premio por Servicios a la Comunidad en representación de la oficina del Sheriff del Condado de Hidalgo y de los oficiales encargados de aplicar las leyes. ¿Podría usted decir la diferencia entre alguien con intentos criminales y alguien que tiene una crisis mental? ¿Cómo respondería a una situación en la cual alguien tiene una fuerza sobrehumana o una inhabilidad de ser razonable? ¿Podría usted encontrar las palabras adecuadas para conversar con alguien que quiere quitarse su propia vida o la de otros?

El STBHC ofrece seminarios sobre temas como la intervención en una crisis para las agencias de aplicación de la ley. El STBHC también llega a las zonas escolares para educar y prevenir suicidios entre la juventud.

“El ser sensible y consciente de los temas/problemas de la salud mental son las cosas importantes para poder ayudar o asistir a la gente para obtener un programa de tratamiento para que puedan vivir una vida de calidad productiva.”, dijo Rodríguez.

a Dra. Victoria Parada mencionó que mayo es el Mes de la Concientización del Derrame Cerebral, “Ataque al Cerebro” mortal que inhabilita a miles de estadounidenses y lo urgente e importante de un tratamiento a tiempo.

El derrame cerebral es la tercera causa de muerte en nuestra nación y encabeza la causa de inhabilitación. Cada año en los Estados Unidos hay 795,000 personas que sufren un derrame cerebral. De los sobrevivientes, el 22 por ciento son hombres y el 24 por ciento son mujeres, los cuales mueren dentro de un año después del ataque y en los mayores de 65 años el porcentaje es aún más alto.

El derrame cerebral es un tipo de enfermedad cardiovascular que afecta las arterias que van al cerebro y las arterias dentro del cerebro. Un derrame ocurre cuando un coágulo de sangre se rompe y bloquea un vaso sanguíneo que lleva oxígeno y nutrientes al cerebro. Cuando esto sucede parte del cerebro no puede recibir la sangre (y el oxígeno) que necesita, y esa parte del cerebro empieza a morir.

25 Concursantes de H-E-B de todo Texas en el Reto de Adelgazar más

an Antonio – H-E-B ha nombrado a los 25 competidores de todo Texas en el primer reto para sus clientes por adelgazar. A principio de año H-E-B invith a los texanos para hacer una solicitud por computadora y recibió más de 500 solicitudes. El reto de 16 semanas es un diseño que provee a los concursantes con educación y lo necesario que necesitan para vivir un estilo de vida más saludable y tener la oportunidad de ganar un gran premio de $10,000 o un segundo gran premio de $5,000 para su ‘fan favorito’.

Los concursantes fueron seleccionados según su voluntad y deseo de seguir el programa y públicamente compartir su jornada y los resultados en el cambio de estilo de vida con el público por medio de los ‘blogs’ y ‘vlogs’.

En junio todos los concursantes llegarán a San Antonio para participar en un programa de bienestar intensivo de cuatro días y medio con los expertos del H-E-B, Methodist Health Care y el Centro de Aerobics Cooper. H-E-B administrará el concurso, así como la educación nutritiva y física. El Methodist Healthcare proveerá supervisión médica y las pruebas del programa y Cooper proporcionará expertos oradores y entrenadores sobre la salud.

Según el Dr. Salameh este es el método escogido de control de la natalidad y es también el más seguro y la versión más económica de prevención. El indicó que es un procedimiento sencillo que se puede realizar en su oficina con una sedación ligera. La esposa puede estar presente y el paciente puede ver el procedimiento en una televisión en la sala del quirófano mientras se está realizando. Esto se toma aproximadamente 30 minutos y si se hace en un viernes, el paciente puede irse a casa, recuperarse durante el fin de semana y estar listo el lunes para regresar al trabajo.

El señaló que después de una vasectomía no se está inmediatamente estéril porque el esperma se mantiene activo en el semen por cierto periodo de tiempo. Puede tomar de 15 a 20 eyaculaciones y varias semanas antes de que el semen esté libre de esperma. El doctor examinará el semen posiblemente

varias veces durante unas semanas y le dejará saber cuándo es seguro que la vasectomía está completada. Esto puede tomar hasta dos meses. “En estos casos el paciente tiene que estar en contacto con nosotros para exámenes de la vasectomía y asegurarnos de que ya no hay esperma”, expuso.

El Dr. Salameh también hace evaluaciones de la próstata por tumores malignos, agrandamiento de la próstata y tratamiento de la próstata para incrementar el flujo urinario y mejorar la habilidad de vaciar la vejiga completamente.

esearch on the use of bariatric surgery to treat type 2 diabetes received extensive coverage in both print and online media, as well as more than seven minutes of coverage on national news broadcasts. ABC World News (Sawyer) reported that "two studies in the 'New England Journal of Medicine' show there's hope for a cure" for diabetes.

The CBS Evening News (Pelley) reported that Dr. Steven Nissen, an author of one of the studies, "was amazed by the results. In fact, many of the patients were taken off their diabetes medicine."

On NBC Nightly News (Williams), NBC Chief Science Correspondent, Robert Bazell said that while physicians "and scientists do not know why the weight lost surgery can have such dramatic effects," they "suspect that the procedure itself causes massive hormonal changes."

The AP reports, "The two studies, released on Monday, are the first to compare stomach-reducing operations to medicines alone for 'diabesity' - Type 2 diabetes brought on by obesity."

In a front-page story, the New York Times reports, "Neither study involved the Lap Band, an implanted

loop that cinches the stomach into a small pouch and that does not involve

Alberti wrote that although surgical weightloss procedures were 'not yet' a panacea for the worldwide epidemic of Type 2 diabetes, the new research 'suggests they should not be seen as a last resort.'"

What is Alzheimer's disease?

lzheimer's disease is a disorder occurring primarily in late life in which the patient's memory, thinking and behavior are impaired because specific brain cells degenerate. With the passage of time, Alzheimer's disease gets steadily worse. At the present time, there is no cure.

The Alzheimer's disease Association estimates that 4 million Americans have Alzheimer's disease and 100,000 die of the disease each year Many individuals show early symptoms of the disease when they are in their 60s or early 70s. Some people fear that occasional forgetfulness, like misplacing keys or not remembering a name, is a sign of Alzheimer's disease. However, this kind of ordinary memory loss does not mean that a person has Alzheimer's disease.

Initially, memory impairments in Alzheimer's disease are mild but

eventually they begin to impact on the life of affected individuals, diminishing their ability to work or function normally. They forget easily and often repeat the same questions even after hearing the answer.

They lose objects, or forget where they are, how they got there and how to get home. They begin having trouble with language, judgment, problem solving and calculating numbers. Their mood may change suddenly, swinging from calm to rage and back again within minutes, without apparent reason.

Dealing with these individuals may be very difficult for family members or caregivers.

These changes occur slowly and may at first be mistaken for simple forgetfulness. However, in Alzheimer's disease, patients grow progressively worse. Medications can only improve some of the symptoms. MDN

Coffee lowers risk of death Mega Doctor News en who drank 2 to 3 cups of coffee daily had a 10% decrease in their risk for death during the 13 years of the study compared with men who drank no coffee. Women who drank 2 to 3 cups of coffee daily had a 13% decrease in their risk for death.

The study, conducted by Neal Freedman, PhD, from the Division of Cancer Epidemiology and Genetics, National Cancer Institute, National Institutes of Health, Rockville, Maryland, and colleagues, appears in the May issue of the New England Journal of Medicine.

"Considerable attention has been focused on the possibility that coffee may increase the risk of heart disease, particularly since drinking coffee has been associated with increased low-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels and short-term increases in blood pressure," the authors note.

However, the results of prior studies looking into that association have been inconsistent. The authors say that may be because of differences in the way the studies were conducted (case-controlled vs prospective study designs) or because previous researchers have not adequately controlled for potentially confounding variables such as tobacco smoking.

In addition to those potential limitations, the authors note, the total number of deaths examined in previous studies has been relatively small.

In an effort to address those issues, this group of researchers checked into the association of coffee consumption with subsequent total and cause-specific mortality in 229,119 men and 173,141

women who completed questionnaires as part of the wide-ranging National Institutes of Health–AARP Diet and Health Study.

When joining the study, participants were given questionnaires that, among other things, asked them about their coffee consumption.

Ages at that baseline assessment ranged from 50 to 71 years. People with cancer or heart disease and those who had a history of stroke were excluded from the study.

During the 13-year study (1995 - 2008), 33,731 men and 18,784 women died. When the investigators used ageadjusted models to assess those results, they found that risks for death were elevated for coffee drinkers compared with those people who did not drink coffee.

However, those who drank coffee were also more likely to be smokers, and when the researchers adjusted for smoking status as well as other potentially confounding variables, a very different picture emerged.

"In this large, prospective U.S. cohort study, we observed a dosedependent inverse association between coffee drinking and total mortality, after adjusting for potential confounders (smoking status in particular)," they write.

More specifically, they found that men who consumed 6 or more cups of coffee each day were 10% less likely to die during the study period than were men who did not drink coffee. For women, the reduction in risk was even greater, at 15%.

he University of TexasPan American's Nursing Department has made the focus of its annual Research Day on diabetes, its occurrence and management.

The event, "Advances in Diabetes Research," was sponsored by Pi Omicron Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing and held Saturday, May 5 at the UTPA Library Media Theater.

Diabetes is one of the greatest health problems facing South Texas residents. According to the South Texas Diabetes Initiative, the prevalence of adult diabetes in the Rio Grande Valley -- 10.88 percent -- is about 20 percent higher than the prevalence in the State of Texas -- 8.81 percent.

In fact, diabetes affects 25.8 million children and adults in the United States, said Dr. Carolina G. Huerta, Lillian O. Slemp Endowed Professor and chair of the UTPA Nursing Department.
