MAN and THE INFINITE The phrase that gives the 33rd Meeting of Rimini its title is drawn from the first chapter of Fr. Giussani’s The Religious Sense: «By nature man is relation to the infinite».

In fact, in everyday experience man discovers that he is made up of diverse needs (for truth, justice, happiness, and love) that are not satisfied by partial responses. As Benedict XVI recalled recently, on the occasion of his apostolic visits to Mexico and the Republic of Cuba, “Humankind is in need of the infinite”.

The Meeting intends to document the experience of this essential relation through encounters, exhibits, and shows.

There are many issues today that the title of the Meeting seeks to illuminate: from the subject of “rights” in all of its various aspects, to the questions posed by scientific research, to the challenging changes that the economic crisis has imposed on the lives of people and nations.

If man is relation to the infinite, then only this relation can provide an adequate basis for the rights of every person and every people, setting the terms for a civilized, free and dignified society. Likewise, scientific investigations regarding man and his biological and neurological structure cannot be detached from the recognition of an ultimate and mysterious relationship by which man is defined and which does not lend itself to any manipulation.

The question of man’s relation to the infinite is an anthropological question; it defines man in that it identifies religious nature as a continual reaching/ tension towards a “beyond” that is at the root of every human movement.

It is precisely this nature, a profound unity of heart and reason – as Benedict XVI affirmed, also during his visit to Mexico – that, being common to all men, permits the experience of the encounter among people of different faiths and cultures as the Meeting hopes to document again this year.

Only the lived experience of such a relation, in fact, creates men who are certain of their own identity and free to recognise that of others, capable of building together and taking the initiative in areas of culture, economics, and politics, for the common good.

There is a desire/an aspiration that we would like to share with all of those who are already working together to realize the aims of the Meeting, and with all of those who will participate in it: that it be, for everyone, the occasion to encounter people and experiences capable of reviving the desire for, and the awareness of, their own relation to the infinite.

The exhibits puts on the spotlight a crucial phase of our country’s life, that in which its capacity to plan the future is displayed: the journey that young people make from the college years to the beginning of their professional life. The theme will be dealt with by documenting experiences that better elucidates needs and difficulties. In front of the present crisis learning to manage skills is not

Genetics and human nature in the gaze of Jérôme Lejeune

The exhibit will begin with the testimony of Jérome Lejeune, founder of clinical genetics, and will continue with an investigation on the “human nature.” The extraordinary development of this field opens great possibilities but also increases the question: knowing for healing or selecting?

While more recent advancements in evolutionary biology make it difficult to think of living beings, especially man, as totally determined by genes, there emerges again the idea dear to Lejeune that every man is “unique” and “irreplaceable” and thus has to be valued as such.

The image of the world and of man: the icon and the painting

This exhibit wants to show how the double image of Dostoyevsky reveals the eternal face that is hidden in contemporary events and to show how events of the evangelical tradition are recognizable in the most complex and burning situations of everyday life. Dostoyevsky’s creative method allows us to grasp that Orthodox icons and Catholic sacred art are not mutually exclusive, but are rather complimentary elements of the same Christian culture. The exhibit, therefore, invites people to recognize in art a space in which evangelical history is always present, in which contemporary man can enter to realize everything that has been proposed to him in the course of the centuries but which has never been concretized.

THrEe cHordS AND THE desirE FOR TRUTH. Rock ‘n’ roll AS SEARCH FOR THE infinitE

This exhibit traces the secret history of human desire expressed through the modality of rock ‘n’ roll. Beyond the chit chat of the music industry, the cacophony of execution, and the wrong interpretations of the surrounding culture, communication through music is moved by the creative desire of the artist toward the listeners’ desire of waiting, from heart to heart.

“Freedom is in religiosity!” The exhibit wants to express the truth of this intuition in the history of one of the ancient peoples of Europe. Through the experience of the curators we look at the lives of three great icons of Albania’s past. From Giorgio Castriota Scanderbeg to the martyr clergy of communism and then to Mother Theresa this exhibit tells of free and authentically religious men and women as a warning to the West, that it does not forget the history that constitutes it.

The exhibit wants to document through life, religiosity, and art, the experience of the I in the relationship with the Mystery that makes all things, as lived by the Buddhist monks of Mount Koya, in Japan. This is an homage from reverend professor Shodo Habukawa to the memory of Father Giussani, 25 years after their first encounter which marked the beginning of a profound friendship and which blossomed into real ecumenism.

In the mediaeval world, one building expressed the nature of man as relation to the infinite: the Cathedral. The exhibits wants to present the secular workshop of the Milan cathedral, by telling the stories of those men and women who contributed to this work and the fundamental role it had in the social and economic life of the city. For this occasion, some significant artifacts from the archives and museum of the Venerable Fabbrica of the Milan cathedral will be displayed.

One of the most important paintings of the Italian Renaissance, and of great religious meaning, is preserved in the Museums of the City of Rimini: Dead Christ supported by Angels by Giovanni Bellini (circa 1470). An exhibit is organized around this masterpiece - not on loan due to conservation issues - along with other exceptional works that either depict Bellini’s same cultural theme of the dead Christ or are contemporaneous to him or inspired by his work.

Man and the infinite... sHOWS The Villager’s Opera

The opening show of this year’s Meeting will truly be an exceptional event. Directly from Lebanon is the Caracalla Dance Theatre Company with “The Villager’s Opera”.

On stage will be over fifty dancers, actors, and singers coming from all over the world, costumes rich in color and sparkling accessories, a modern and at the same time baroque scenography, exhilarating and captivating music,

“Crime and Punishment” on stage The work of Russian writer Fyodor Dostoevsky will be perfomed in two acts at the Theater Ermete Novelli in Rimini, thanks to the students of the Bergamo high school “La Traccia”. This tour started two years ago and has gained so much attention that it crossed Italian borders into Siberia and Moscow. This is a unique experience, an educational challenge born thanks to a group passionate professors and the availability of about sixty students who accepted the challenge to face the author, his work, and all the details of staging the show, from acting to scenography, to managing the sound system and lighting.

A spectacular concert-homage to the great artist Andrés Segovia proposed by his most brilliant pupil Piero Bonaguri. This will be the heart of the show realized on the occasion of the anniversary of this twentieth century great guitarist known and admired by Stravinsky, Ravel, De Falla and Picasso. The audience will be able to hear not only famous pieces from Segovia’s repertoire, but also some new works written by Maestri Bonaguri and some of his composer friends.

Is it possible to represent the Gospel in music? The show En Ti accomplished this. Thanks to the artistic direction of famous dancer and choreographer Luis Ortega, Annunciation, Passion, Death and Resurrection will arrive at the Meeting in a jubilation of music, dance and flamenco, after the success obtained in Spain on the occasion of the 2011 World Youth Day in Madrid. This is an answer to the invitation Pope Benedict XVI made to artists in 2009, encouraging them to preserve beauty and use their talents to reawake the sensibility of each man. En Ti shows how art can generate dreams and hopes in order to attract man to beauty.

FLAMENCO The class will be led by dancers of the show En Ti, directed by Spanish choreographer and dancer Luis Ortega. Along with songs, music and flamenco, an interview with Emilio Perez will explain the tradition and folklore of this ancient and fascinating dance.

Together with Caracalla Dance Theatre, we will learn to dance in the perfect Caracalla style, a unique style that blends Lebanese tradition and folklore with the physical language of Martha Graham, thus creating an original dance, a mysterious crossroads between oriental and occidental traditions.

Do you love cinema and is a short movie your dream? This is the slogan of the MeetingRimini Film Festival, at its fifth edition this year and with a very prestigious jury. But what is this year’s proposal?

To tell about man’s engagement with daily life by letting all facets emerge. The short movies, of a maximum length of 10 minutes, have to be submitted by May 4 and the winner will receive a 10-week course at the School of Visual Art of New York, a one year scholarship for the Academy of Cinema and Television of Cinecittà in Rome and a cash prize of E. 1,000. In early June, the movies selected for the final screening will be shown at two important previews, in New York and Rome.

Once again this year you will find the restaurant Il Chicco e il Grano, with a menu entirely dedicated to children and the family, with some gluten-free options.

Also available the area Papperia, a quiet place equipped with all comforts for mom and baby.

A passion for sport

13,000 square meters dedicated to sport, promoted in association with CSI (Italian Sport Center) and CdO Sport, to get to know and practice many sport activities: beach volleyball and beach rugby, golf, indoor soccer, volleyball, basketball, table tennis, foosball, lacrosse, street games, checkers and chess. During the week there will also be sport events and tournaments.

New in 2012: track and field, an area for judo and tennis.

Children at the Meeting with Service Web A baby club for children age 4-8, open Sunday from 2:30 to 8:30pm and Monday through Friday from 11am to 8:30pm.

Parents will be able to drop off the children with qualified personnel for one or more hours.
