MEET THE PHARMACISTS

At the centre of our incredible Priceline community are our trusted Pharmacists. We introduce you to some of the friendly faces who are here to offer you guidance

EDWARD TANZIL PHARMACIST AT PRICELINE PHARMACY POTTS POINT, NSW

This year marks Edward’s 15th anniversary as a Pharmacist. He’s also set some pretty big goals for himself to become stronger, fitter and healthier than he was at 21. When he’s off-duty, you'll find him kicking a ball around with his son, and his life approach is: “Work hard, play hard and use money to buy memories [rather than possessions].” Edward’s thoughts on what we should stock up on in Winter: “I’m constantly reminding people to load up on their immune boosters and multivitamins. They can help you avoid catching a cold and reduce the recovery time when it does get you. Besides, I think you always feel stronger and more energised when you’re taking them regularly.”

COBIE McQUEEN

Pharmacist at Priceline Pharmacy Horsham, Vic Cobie is a Taylor Swift-loving Pharmacist who lives by the motto: “You can never be overdressed or overeducated.” She says 2020 taught her to “schedule in time for self-care like you would schedule in any other task”. COBIE’S ADVICE FOR COMBATING WINTER SKIN WOES: “Skin conditions such as eczema can flare up due to the changes in temperature, reduced humidity, windy conditions and indoor heating, which all dry out the skin. Staying hydrated, using a soap-free wash and a thick moisturiser can help combat this – and don’t forget the SPF.”

6

YOU WINTER 2021

PHUONG NGUYEN

Pharmacist at Priceline Pharmacy Riverlink, Qld

GEOFF HOPE

Pharmacist at Priceline Pharmacy Glenorchy and Priceline Pharmacy Bridgewater, Tas Geoff has been a Pharmacist for 28 years and his favourite product to recommend is a probiotic, which he says has helped many of his customers. He’s a huge fan of the great outdoors and his go-to fitness activities are running and kayaking.

GEOFF’S POINTERS FOR LEADING A HEALTHIER LIFESTYLE: “Don’t hibernate in

Winter. Get outside and be active. It’s also important to discuss your cold and flu symptoms with your Pharmacist. Most of the time we can provide a far better outcome for our customers if we know more about them.”

After working in a hospital/research pharmacy, Phuong moved across to Priceline and hasn’t looked back! She loves being connected to the community through her work and seeing the difference she helps to make in her patients’ lives. In her spare time, she enjoys listening to ’80s and ’90s music, especially if it’s a song she can dance to. PHUONG’S ADVICE ON WHAT WE SHOULD ALL DO FOR OUR HEALTH: “Stay hydrated! You may drink lots of water but it doesn’t get retained where it’s needed if you lack electrolytes. Coughing can also dehydrate you. Many common symptoms such as headaches and cramps can actually be caused by dehydration.”

JULIE TRAN PHARMACIST AT PRICELINE PHARMACY KARINGAL HUB, VIC

Julie is a retail therapy-loving Pharmacist of 13 years who would have been a beauty therapist if she wasn’t in her current career. Luckily, she says, she gets the best of both the health and beauty worlds at Priceline. As for her most-loved product, Julie swears by fish oil for supporting skin, cardiovascular and eye health. Julie’s recommendation for helping your body stay healthy when the mercury drops: “I think people underestimate the need to adequately rest our bodies during the colder months when we are more susceptible to getting sick. It’s crucial to make sure you get enough good-quality sleep to allow your body to stay fit and healthy.” PRICELINE.COM.AU

QUANG MAI PHARMACIST AT PRICELINE PHARMACY PORT MACQUARIE, NSW

Quang is a people person who loves unwinding by whipping something up in the kitchen and playing music by The Avalanches. When reflecting on 2020, he says: “Connection is the key – to family, friends and customers. Also, I should have invested in toilet paper shares!” Quang’s approach to staying well during Winter: “Keep warm, get vaccinated yearly, stay hydrated and keep fit. Listen to your body and its needs. Look into immune boosters, probiotics, fish oil or consider whether you just need more fibre in your diet.”

SOUMYA PANDYA

Pharmacist at Priceline Head Office

Soumya has been a Pharmacist for nine years and she’s recently welcomed her first bub into the world! Her favourite part of being a Pharmacist is having the ability to help her patients and see their happy, smiling faces when they return to thank her for her advice.

ANDREW DOUGLAS

Pharmacist at Priceline Pharmacy Yass, NSW

With a knack for working out people’s doppelgangers, Andrew is a personable Pharmacist who thrives on assisting his customers in rural NSW. When he’s not manning the pharmacy counter at Priceline, he loves getting out for a run and pumping tunes from The Cat Empire.

THE HEALTH-BOOSTING HABIT ANDREW SAYS WE SHOULD ALL GET INTO MORE:

“I think people don’t exercise enough, especially in the cooler southern states as they bunker down for the Winter. Exercising for 30 minutes a day, five days a week has so many health benefits, both physical and mental.”

8

YOU WINTER 2021

WHAT SOUMYA WANTS US ALL TO REMEMBER THIS WINTER: “Practise good hand hygiene. It’s so simple but so easily forgotten. It goes a really long way to helping you stay healthy and fight any viruses over this season.”

COLD & FLU FIGHTERS We ask a Priceline Pharmacist for some preventative measures to help you stay healthy this season

EDWARD TANZIL Priceline Pharmacist

Each year, a sharp drop in temperatures heralds the start of the cold and flu season, which can leave many of us feeling under the weather with symptoms such as aches, fever and sore throat. Usually, there’s a tried-and-true formula that helps us see out Winter as healthily as possible, including vaccinations, good sanitation, healthy lifestyles and pharmaceutical aids. But with the world now living with a pandemic, can we use the same practices to keep healthy? We asked Priceline Pharmacist Edward Tanzil our burning questions – including what new precautions we should be taking alongside our usual cold and flu-busting regimen – so we can stay on top of our health in ‘the new normal’. 12

Are we more at risk of catching colds and flu in Winter?

ARM YOURSELF WITH THESE PRODUCTS FOR PREVENTION AND RELIEF

“It does appear that colds and flu survive better in cool environments compared to hot, humid environments. During Winter, we tend to stay indoors and close windows more, so there’s poorer ventilation. You’re probably also staying in closer contact with people.”

have been. At the top of the list is social distancing. I think it’s probably quite clever and practical if you know you’re around people who might be coughing or who might be ill, just maintain a bit more distance. Also, simple things like making sure wherever you’re working has good airflow.”

Due to social distancing and lockdowns, many Australians have been less exposed to germs over the past 12 months. Has this weakened our immune systems for the current cold and flu season?

Is it safe to get both the flu and COVID vaccines in the same year?

“No, I wouldn’t say that. It would actually take a lot longer than 12 months to see a significant decline in our immune response.”

What are some practical things we can do to avoid catching colds and flu this Winter?

“The best thing is often to stay fit and healthy because when your body is challenged by a virus, it has a much higher chance of being able to fight it off without any serious illness. Also, we’ve all seen from the impact of the pandemic how good some of these public measures

“Yes – and it’s more important than ever to get the flu vaccine this year. Get it as early as possible so that when your turn comes for the COVID-19 vaccine, there’s no need to delay. The main thing to know is that you have to leave a minimum of 14 days between [getting the flu and COVID vaccines], according to the Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation.”

“Stay well-rested and hydrated, keep up your food intake to maintain energy levels (you can lose your appetite when you’re unwell but staying on top of your food intake means you can recover quicker) and use cold and flu tablets for symptom relief, reducing the impact of potential secondary infections.”

“One of the main ingredients is olive leaf, which stops the viral replication. So it often reduces the duration of the illness and helps speed up the recovery. It can also be used for prevention if you take it in advance.”

COMING CLEAN Good hygiene practices have never been more important. So it’s time to scrub up on the basics

14

YOU WINTER 2021

I

f there’s one thing that we’ve learnt in the past year (besides how to make banana bread and change our Zoom backgrounds), it’s the importance of maintaining good hygiene practices. And as we settle into another cold and flu season, those practices are particularly vital. But how do you know if you’re doing enough to keep yourself and your family as well as possible this Winter? We asked Priceline Pharmacist Nancy El-Miski for her top tips.

As It Falls Antibacterial Hand Wash 250mL, $7.99.

IN GOOD HANDS

“When it comes to protecting yourself from germs, washing your hands for at least 20 seconds is number one – I can’t stress this enough,” says Nancy. It’s best to use good old soap and warm water, or opt for an alcohol-based hand sanitiser if you don’t have access to soap (and your hands aren’t visibly dirty). Not sure if 20 seconds has passed? You can always hum the “Happy Birthday” song twice, but if you’re tired of that, we suggest “Raspberry Beret” by Prince – the chorus is the perfect hand-washing length.

KEEP YOUR DISTANCE

Isocol Rubbing Alcohol Antiseptic 345mL, $11.99. Always read the label. Follow the directions for use.

Even with restrictions easing, physical distancing is still a good idea during cold and flu season. “Social distancing is super-crucial as research has found distance can reduce your chances of getting sick,” says Nancy. When in public spaces, try to maintain a 1.5m gap between yourself and others, and if you’re the one feeling unwell, stay home and get tested.

MASK UP

The rules surrounding wearing a protective face mask vary, but it pays to use one as much as you can during the cooler months. “A lot of people think that if you have symptoms, wearing a mask stops them spreading to other people, but wearing a mask is essentially to stop other people’s respiratory particles touching you,” Nancy explains.

Germisept Multi-Purpose Alcohol Wipes 50 Pack, $7.99.

LOOK AFTER OTHERS

Good hygiene practices are always recommended, but they’re especially crucial around seniors. “[Elders] are more vulnerable to picking up infections through touching things or through contact with people,” Nancy says. “If visiting someone older, be careful with your hygiene and vice versa – washing hands and covering your face if there are people sneezing and coughing.”

Milton Anti-bacterial Tablets 30 Tablets, $7.99. Always read the label. Follow the directions for use.

FAMILY VALUES As Winter sets in, it’s important to keep everyone in the home healthy and fighting fit, both inside and out. Here, we ask Priceline Pharmacist Nancy El-Miski to break down her top health advice for every member of the family Always read the label. Follow the directions for use. If symptoms persist, talk to your health professional.

2

FOR THE KIDS...

Immune support

New school rules dictate that children with even the mildest cold symptoms stay home, so keeping kids’ immune systems in top shape is front of mind for many parents. There are a couple of surefire ways to do this, according to Nancy: “If [they’re] not getting enough immune boosters through fruits and vegies, taking a vitamin will help protect [your kids] that little bit more.” If kids do fall sick with a cold or flu, pair plenty of rest and fluids with a cold and flu syrup to tackle their symptoms.

FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY... Eat healthily

Foods packed with vitamin C are really important as they boost the immune system and help in the production of virus-fighting white blood cells. “I recommend all my customers eat healthily – including greens and vitamin C-rich foods like oranges,” says Nancy.

FOR THE SENIORS...

Joint jump-starters

For those with mild arthritis, Winter may cause joints to become stiffer than usual. “You’ll definitely have heightened pain because of the cold,” says Nancy. “Exercising is important, so increase your movement. You can also take painkillers if you’re not on any other medications or have any serious medical conditions. Alternatively, use gels, rubs or heat packs to help loosen up joints.”

Stay hydrated

6

Ask your Pharmacist – they must decide if this product is right for you. Incorrect use could be harmful.

Make sure you keep up your fluids to maintain your health and to help you fight against colds and flu should you catch them. “In Winter when it’s not as hot, you naturally forget to drink as much,” warns Nancy. Carry a reusable water bottle to help you stay hydrated when you’re on the go.

“Exercise is vital,” says Nancy, “and then getting enough sleep to ensure your body can recuperate.” You’ll need to sleep long enough to get

through several REM cycles, which are essential for stimulating the learning and memory-based parts of the brain. How much sleep exactly? According to the Sleep Foundation, it depends on your age – seven to nine hours per day for adults, seven to eight hours for seniors, eight to 10 hours for teens, nine to 11 hours for schoolkids and 14 to 17 hours for newborns.

Stress less

“Winter often [triggers] anxiety and depression, so trying to manage that will help boost your immune system,” says Nancy. Some ways to reduce stress include maintaining a healthy diet, exercising, getting a good amount of rest and staying social with your friends and family. Meditation can also do wonders – apps such as Headspace and Calm became popular during lockdown for their ease of use and chance to start meditation from any skill level. PRICELINE.COM.AU

With more allergy information available to the general public than ever before, it can be increasingly difficult to navigate which advice you should listen to. To help you out, we asked Priceline Pharmacist Edward Tanzil to weigh in on some of the most common allergy facts and fallacies.

Antihistamines are the quickest way to stop a flare-up.

TRUE “If your allergy is more eye-related or you have a runny nose, a dry throat or itchy skin, antihistamines are fast-acting tablets that work within an hour. If it’s more moderate or severe and the tablets aren’t doing the job, you might use an intranasal steroid spray. You use those daily but they have a longer period of action. Steroid sprays don’t give as fast relief as the tablets – they can take

There are less allergens in Winter than Spring.

FALSE “This is a common assumption, but because you stay indoors more in Winter and get less ventilation, you’re probably more exposed to things like dust mites and pet dander, plus dust from the wind and the elements. Those things can all be regarded as allergens, which can cause you to have an allergy fit.”

a day or so to kick in – but once they do, they give you longer-lasting relief.”

Indoor allergy flare-ups are unavoidable.

FALSE “To avoid flare-ups, keep your house as clean as possible. Wipe down surfaces to reduce dust particles, improve ventilation by opening windows and keep pets well-groomed throughout Winter.”

You can’t distinguish between a cold and an allergy flare-up.

FALSE “The main difference between a cold and an allergy is temperature. Usually you don’t get a temperature with the allergy whereas with colds and flu, you can get a fever, even a mild one. You also wouldn’t get a wet cough with allergens (you might get a dry tickle in the throat) and you wouldn’t get the energy loss. By taking time to map out the week ahead (think dinner plans, school drop-offs and important work deadlines), none of the important stuff gets missed. Of course, it’s impossible to anticipate everything, but having the key things covered off means you’re in a good place to handle whatever else life throws at you.

When the daylight hours are shorter, we admit that snuggling up on the couch to watch your favourite show is much more enticing than venturing outside for a run. But regular exercise isn’t just important for your physical form – it’s vital for your mental health, too. If you’re short on time, remember something is always better than nothing. Try a 15-minute workout on YouTube, have a dance in your kitchen as you cook dinner or go for a brisk walk around the block to get your blood pumping and those feel-good endorphins flowing. Getting back into exercise is also a great excuse to update your fitness kit – think: cool new activewear and sneakers, hair accessories to keep your strands off your face so you can give your sweat sesh your all and bandages to help keep blisters at bay.

COLD TREATMENT “Keeping fit and taking time to relax are important to your health.”

As the mercury drops, be mindful of the dos and don’ts for easing colds and flu – and the remedies that really work It’s no surprise that, in Winter, colds run rampant in our community (no wonder they call it the ‘common cold’). Whether you’re in an office, at home or on the go, staving off sickness can sometimes feel like an impossible task when the cooler weather sets in. Fortunately, Priceline Pharmacist Edward Tanzil has some commonsense advice for preventing, easing and beating colds and flu.

DON’T delay taking symptomatic relief

“I’m a big advocate for using symptomatic relief earlier rather than later. I think that when you use it early, to stop simple things such as a runny nose, you’re stopping the symptoms from getting worse and causing any further nasty symptoms.”

DO get the flu shot every year

“The best preventative measure is to get the annual flu shot. It’s recommended to get the influenza shot several months

24

YOU WINTER 2021

before flu season – between March and May – as your immunity increases in strength over time after receiving the shot. So if you haven’t had your flu shot already, book your appointment now! Also, remember that you can’t get the flu from the flu shot.”

and touching surfaces that a sick person has handled. Regularly disinfecting high-use areas of your house – such as doorknobs, bathrooms and kitchen spaces – can help to reduce the chance of getting sick, especially if there’s someone in your house who is already feeling unwell. A daily disinfectant wipe of everyday items such as your car keys, phone and wallet can also help to keep nasty viruses at bay.”

DON’T panic

DON’T forget to cut back on alcohol and smoking

DON’T go out if you’re feeling sick

“It’s pretty self-explanatory, but this past year has proven that social distancing and isolation can help dramatically reduce the spread of viral strains. If you’re feeling symptoms of the flu, get tested, consult your GP, stay home and avoid contact with others where possible until you receive a negative result and your symptoms clear up.”

DO carry and wear a protective face mask

“While mask rules are different for every state, it’s proven that wearing one reduces the spread of viruses. If there’s no specific mask-wearing rules in your area, I recommend carrying a mask at all times and wearing it when you’re in a confined space with lots of people, like the supermarket or on public transport.”

DO stock up on cold-busting products “I recommend nasal sprays, symptomatic relief inhalants to maintain moisture and menthol eucalyptus.”

Priceline Pharmacist

“Stress can compromise your immune system – and while cold and flu season during a pandemic can seem extremely daunting, it’s important to remember not to worry yourself into a panic over the current climate. Keeping fit, staying in touch with your loved ones and taking time to relax are as important to your health (and warding off sickness) as are all of our recommended preventative measures.”

DO keep things clean

“Viral particles can spread through both direct contact with a person

Vicks Inhaler 0.5mL, $8.99.

“While drinking alcohol isn’t generally going to compromise your immune system, it can make you dehydrated and lower your body’s protective barrier against viral strains. And it’s recommended to avoid drinking altogether if you have a cold or flu, as it can exacerbate symptoms of dehydration, making you feel worse and potentially taking longer for you to get well. Smoking can also compromise your immune system as well as increase the risk of other conditions that can be extremely detrimental to your health.”

THE INS & OUTS OF

INFLAMMATION

W

hile many of us would associate inflammation with temporary discomfort – the redness and swelling that’s triggered when we cut a finger preparing dinner, for example – it’s also related to some serious health issues, the most obvious ones being chronic conditions such as medically diagnosed rheumatoid arthritis, certain autoimmune disorders and inflammatory bowel disease. In these instances, the body creates inflammation even when there are no ‘invaders’, such as bacteria or viruses, to fight off. Depending on the type of inflammation and its cause, symptoms will differ. You might experience anything from pain and fatigue to gastrointestinal issues and weight change. For example, with

medically diagnosed rheumatoid arthritis, where the immune system attacks the joints, you’d expect pain, swelling, stiffness, numbness and possibly a loss of function. Because symptoms can cross over with other conditions, your Doctor will run further tests to make a diagnosis. Another common type of inflammation is in the skin. Skin inflammation can be a factor in a variety of ailments such as acne, eczema and dermatitis, but in a more mild form can also be a contributor to premature ageing. Many inflammatory skin conditions can be managed under the care of a GP or Pharmacist – treatment may include over-the-counter creams and oral medication. You might also want to look into gentle skincare products that are developed specifically for irritated skin.

Always see a health professional “Treatment of the underlying condition is crucial.”

A NOTE FROM DR. PREEYA

GP and Priceline Health Expert Dr. Preeya Alexander says there is no quick fix for inflammation. “Lots of different things can cause inflammation. It can occur if you have an infection somewhere, but it can also occur after an injury, like a muscle injury, for instance. No supplement will prevent it.” We asked for her advice on what can help...

“Inflammation can literally occur anywhere,” says Dr. Preeya. Because inflammation can affect any part of the body, it’s important to seek the advice of a GP or Pharmacist for treatment. MENTAL HEALTH

MATTERS From keeping active to simple self-care practices, clinical psychologist Ruth Nelson shares how to look after your mind this Winter

28

YOU WINTER 2021

W

hen we think about Winter health issues, it’s physical ailments such as colds and flu and aching joints that spring to mind. But our mental health can be just as tricky to manage (and is commonly overlooked due to its ‘invisible’ nature). As the mood-boosting daylight hours dwindle, it’s more important than ever to focus on your mental wellbeing.

Look after your body’s needs

Research has shown that poor physical health can lead to compromised mental health, and vice versa. “We can’t always control the stress in our lives,” says Ruth. “However, there is plenty we can do to protect our mental wellbeing.” She suggests focusing on maintaining a healthy diet, drinking plenty of water, getting adequate sleep and making time for exercise.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR Connect with others

“From the bushfires bringing home the reality of climate change to the global pandemic, the past few years have been a very difficult time for most people,” says Ruth. “Many of the usual ways of coping have been lost to us and lots of people are struggling.” She recommends checking in with your family, friends and neighbours as well as looking for local community groups to help you connect with others. “Be open about how you are feeling. Live as best you can in ways that connect you to your values, and to people who share your values.”

IT’S IMPORTANT TO BE AWARE IF YOU START EXPERIENCING ANY OF THESE THINGS

Feeling stuck in distressing feelings and thoughts. Sadness or irritability that won’t go away. Shifts from very high to very low moods. Regularly feeling afraid, anxious or worried.

Seek fulfilment

If you’re feeling down, you may feel like disconnecting from society. But it’s important to continue engaging in

Withdrawing from people you usually spend time with. Changes in eating or sleeping patterns.

IF YOU OR ANYONE YOU KNOW IS STRUGGLING TO COPE, VISIT BEYONDBLUE.ORG.AU.

Keep in mind... It’s normal for our feelings to fluctuate, but when distressing thoughts won’t go away, it can be cause for concern.

activities you enjoy or that give you a feeling of accomplishment to boost your mental health. “We need to feel productive in some way, through work, for example – and to be secure financially,” says Ruth. “We need to feel engaged in society such as through volunteering or participating in action regarding climate change. These activities connect us to our values and help us live a life that feels meaningful and fulfilled. A sense of spirituality, in whatever form that may take for you, is also important, such as feeling connected to nature.”

Reach out to a professional

If you feel like you’re struggling to cope, don’t be afraid to make an appointment with your GP to chat things over. Together, you can discuss the possibility of getting a mental health care plan to subsidise appointments with a mental health professional, or whether there are other treatment options, such as medication, that might be suitable for you.

How you can help others Some friendly support can make the world of difference

“Support from others is a vital part of coping with mental distress,” says Ruth. “It is a chance to grow closer to them and isn’t something to be scared of.” If you feel a loved one may be struggling, here are some ways you can reach out.

ASK them simply and respectfully if they are struggling to cope. LISTEN non-judgmentally, without trying to fix things. SUGGEST you go to an appointment with them, such as to see their GP. PROVIDE support in a practical way, such as minding their kids or going for a walk with them.

HAPPIER HORMONES

They’re vital to many of your body’s processes, so an imbalance of your hormones can wreak havoc with your health and wellbeing

W

e often blame them for mood swings and breakouts, but hormones are responsible for so much more. Sometimes referred to as the body’s ‘chemical messengers’, hormones regulate a huge number of processes. And while levels naturally fluctuate throughout your lifetime – think: menstruation, pregnancy and menopause – sometimes a hormonal imbalance can indicate or cause a serious health issue. According to Priceline Pharmacist Nancy El-Miski, hormones at suboptimal levels can point to numerous ailments. “Several conditions cause them to play up, including medically diagnosed diabetes and polycystic ovarian syndrome,” she says. Because the ovaries and pituitary, thyroid and adrenal glands produce hormones that affect a range of functions, an imbalance can also cause problems with your metabolism and mood. Identifying the cause of a hormonal imbalance can help to prevent the onset of disease, so make sure you note any potential irregularities and chat through your concerns with a health professional. “There are so many possible signs, from changes in weight, fatigue, muscle weakness and headaches to bloating and an unsettled stomach,” says Nancy. Once a professional diagnosis has been made, treatment can begin. Depending on the cause, that could look like anything from adopting lifestyle changes designed to minimise symptoms (such as eating well, drinking enough water, managing anxiety) to supplementation or even medication.

THE TOOLKIT These supplements can help support hormone health

1

For common complaints such as trouble with sleep, digestion or focus, consider chatting to your Doctor or Pharmacist about whether you have abnormally high levels of cortisol. A temporary imbalance in this hormone is often due to increased stress and can sometimes be corrected with simple mindfulness practices such as yoga or meditation. Many experts believe the gut’s microbiome also plays a role in maintaining hormonal equilibrium, so boost good bacteria by eating fibre-rich foods and a wide range of fruit and vegetables. Of course, if you’re dealing with natural fluctuations, they can be just as frustrating. Many women with menopause symptoms find relief by identifying triggers and avoiding them. For example, if eating spicy food or exercising strenuously brings on hot flushes or excessive sweating, give them a miss. Similarly, PMS is thought to be caused by variations in hormones throughout your cycle. While some changes are normal, major symptoms such as severe cramps, breast pain and intense mood swings could point to a bigger issue. Another red flag? Brown spotting. This could be a sign of low progesterone levels and is something you’ll need to have checked out with your Doctor.

IT’S COLD OUT

Winter may not be the easiest time to maintain healthy, hydrated skin, but with the right advice and some hardworking products, you’ll sail through

GLORIA PEREZ

Priceline Beauty Advisor 34

YOU WINTER 2021

2

Problem #1: Dry skin

The fix: Go hard on hydrating

products that will help repair the skin’s barrier. If your complexion is extra parched, consider adding a facial oil to your skincare stash. “With drier skin, I’d suggest using both a moisturiser and an oil,” says Gloria. “Apply the moisturiser first as the molecules are thinner so they penetrate faster. Then add your oil on top to form a protective layer on the surface of the skin and prevent hydration loss.”

If your main Winter beauty gripe is dry, dehydrated skin, rest assured: you’re not alone. “During the cooler months, the top skin concern we’re asked about is dryness,” says Priceline Beauty Advisor Gloria Perez. Low humidity, cold winds and indoor heating mean our complexions quickly become parched – and even those with normal or oily skin aren’t immune.

Problem #2: Chapped lips

1

The fix: “Drink more water and

“The main causes of dry, flaky lips are environmental exposure to cold weather, sun damage or a lack of hydration,” explains Gloria. “If you’re not getting enough water in your system, you’ll see it in your lips first.”

2

invest in a good lip ointment,” says Gloria. “I prefer ointments because they act like a really nice barrier. It also helps you avoid licking your lips because of the dryness.” If you’re dealing with flaky lips, use a scrub to remove the dry, dead skin before massaging in the ointment.

1. Sukin Paw Paw Ointment 25g, $8.99. 2. Burt’s Bees Conditioning Lip Scrub 7.1g, $12.99. 3. Dermal Therapy Lip Balm 10g, $6.49.

Problem #3: Breakouts and ‘maskne’

Breakouts often come with the change of seasons, and wearing a protective face mask can exacerbate the problem. ‘Maskne’ is caused when heat and moisture from your mouth are trapped between the fabric and your face, creating the perfect breeding ground for congested skin.

The fix: “Masks do contribute to

breakouts, but we can help prevent what happens to our skin by giving it the right treatment,” says Gloria. Arm yourself with a nourishing cleanser that will deep-clean pores without stripping skin. Add in a toner to remove any final traces of impurities, and a two-inone treatment moisturiser to prevent breakouts and scarring.

Problem #4: Parched palms When the wintry weather arrives, our hands – often left vulnerable to the cool, dry air outside – are one of the first parts of our bodies to suffer. They’re especially susceptible to dryness after months of diligent hand washing and countless applications of hand sanitiser.

3

2

The fix: To address the harsh effects of stripping sanitisers, look for products made with moisturising ingredients such as aloe vera. Stock up on hand creams (and remember to leave one in your bag for on-the-go). A top tip is to rub excess lip ointment into extra-dry areas such as your knuckles for added TLC.

YOU WINTER 2021

A faux tan is one of the simplest ways to give yourself a great glow. For an even, streak-free finish, use an exfoliating mitt the day before application and avoid body washes that contain oils as these can cause a patchy tan. Once your tan has developed, steer clear of hot showers and remember to moisturise to prolong your glow. After a quick, bespoke bronze? Add a few tanning drops to your moisturiser.

GRAB A HYDRATION HIT

Dry skin equals dull skin, so ensure you’re giving your complexion all the hydration it needs. Go for moisturisers with nourishing ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, ceramides or vitamin E. EAT WINTER WELL

GP and Priceline Health Expert Dr. Preeya Alexander (aka @thewholesomedoctor) shares her advice on eating right

EAT TO SUPPORT YOUR IMMUNITY

“The truth is that there is no magicbullet supplement for the Winter period; if you want to reduce your risk of colds and other bugs, then the simple lifestyle stuff done well is your best bet – things like eating a well-balanced diet high in fruit and vegetables, staying physically active and getting enough sleep are key,” explains Dr. Preeya. “For some individuals, such as those who are vegetarian or vegan, supplements with nutrients like iron or vitamin B12 may be required, however it’s worth a discussion with your Pharmacist or GP before you start taking anything to see if it is necessary.”

LET THE SEASON BE YOUR GUIDE

“Eat what’s in season when it comes to fruit and vegies – it means you can get in more goodness without breaking the bank, hopefully,” says Dr. Preeya. “When broccoli and cauliflower are selling for $2 a pop, snap them up and use them for whatever you can.”

40

YOU WINTER 2021

HAVE YOUR CAKE...

“I think anything that makes you feel good has health benefits,” says Dr. Preeya. “Food is more than just nutrition – it brings joy, it provides comfort. We need to go easy on ourselves, and if a certain dish makes you smile and gets endorphins flowing, then go for it! I’m not saying eat ice-cream and cake every single day, all day, but my goodness eat it sometimes and when you do, enjoy it. My Winter sweet treat is my husband’s bread-and-butter pudding. He makes it using brioche and it’s amazing.” To up the wellness factor when you’re tucking into your favourite foods, try this: “See how many vegies you can pack into your favourite Winter comfort foods. Lasagne, shepherd’s pie, soups – they can all take a big veg hit so they bring all the comfort but all the goodness as well.”

DR. PREEYA’S HEALTHY DINNER IN A FLASH “I throw pre-made dumplings, noodles and whatever vegies I have lying around into a broth – and boom, it’s done. It’s the perfect nourishing meal. I use zucchini, broccoli, tinned baby corn, silverbeet, mushrooms, carrot – literally whatever I can find – and the kids love it and so do we.”

THE MATILDAS

As a partner of Football Australia, Priceline is pleased to give you an inside look at the incredible athletes in our national women’s soccer team

Priceline has kicked off an exciting three-year stint as an official partner of Football Australia. It means we have also become an official partner of the Westfield Matildas – the Australian female soccer team that’s full of strong, confident role models. Not only do these women represent Australia at an elite level, they also inspire future generations of players – including Aussie kids involved with the MiniRoos introductory football programs.

EMILY GIELNIK

For Emily, one of the best bits about being part of the Westfield Matildas is representing Australia in the international arena. “I get to put on that green and gold jersey and wear it with pride.”

Emily on how to become more active: “My advice is

to just start. There’s no right time, no perfect day to start. Set yourself an achievable routine and keep yourself accountable.”

STEPH CATLEY

For vice-captain Steph, joining the Westfield Matildas was an important milestone. “It means representing my family and friends and the country that I love at the highest level.”

Steph on what she loves about playing for the Westfield Matildas:

“When you’re part of a team, they become like your family. They’re there for you through the highs and to pick you up through the lows. I feel very lucky to have that support system.” 42

Chloe on finding the motivation to train – even in Winter: “I think as elite

athletes, we all have this drive to be better. During the colder months, it’s just thinking about the times when it will be hot and hard and just trying to work on ourselves every single day.”

CAITLIN FOORD

Caitlin says she feels extremely lucky to play for the Westfield Matildas. “It’s given me everything: travel, a career and best friends.”

Caitlin on her most memorable moment: “It was when we qualified for the 2016 Olympics. That tournament schedule was just brutal. It was a special feeling to know every single one of the girls put in the work to achieve the same goal.”

THE BIG QUESTIONS From how to sleep with a stuffy nose to looking after your heart, we delve into all your cool-weather health concerns

Bisolvon Chesty Forte Double Strength Liquid 200mL, $16.99.

Do you really lose the most body heat through your head?

This medicine may not be right for you. Read the label before purchase. Follow the directions for use. If symptoms persist, talk to your health professional.

How can I get a good night’s sleep when I’m sick? When you’re sick with a cold or flu, it’s important to rest to help your body recuperate faster. But if you’ve got a niggly cough or blocked nose, getting a solid eight hours isn’t easy. The solution? Arm yourself with a few key products to help ease symptoms, such as cough liquid to break up mucus, a balm packed with eucalyptus and menthol to clear a stuffy nose and a steam vaporiser to aid congestion.

As kids, many of us were told that we needed to wear a beanie or hood when we were outside in Winter because most of our body heat escapes through the head. But scientists have debunked this theory. Although it’s true that you do lose heat through uncovered parts of the body, you’re no more likely to lose it through your head than another body part. So if you’re planning to go out into the cold, make sure you cover everything up – not just your head!

Is it okay to exercise in cold weather?

Yes – in fact, it’s not just okay, it’s really beneficial to get in some solid sweat sessions during Winter. We’ve all been guilty of putting on a little extra weight during the cooler months due to being indoors and living more sedentary lifestyles, not to mention indulging in some cosy (read: unhealthy) comfort food. But regular exercise can help to keep this seasonal weight gain in check. What’s more, researchers have found that exercise may help to boost your immunity, too.

Is Winter a good time to get a tattoo?

Tattoos are trending in a big way and if you’re wanting to get yourself some fresh ink, Winter is regarded as the best season to do it. That’s because you’re less likely to sweat and more likely to be covered up from UV rays – both of which can affect a new tattoo. Just make sure you still use aftercare ointment to assist with the healing process.

Do I really need to wear sunscreen in Winter?

During the cold season, the daylight hours are shorter and we’re outdoors less, which can lead many of us to get a little lax when it comes to daily sunscreen application. But in Australia, we still have UV levels of three or more (meaning a moderate risk from unprotected sun exposure) in many places throughout the year. So it’s essential that you protect your skin by applying (and regularly reapplying) sunscreen to all exposed areas of the body.

Handle with care Now that you’ve taken the plunge and got a tattoo, the last thing you want to do is see it fade. To keep it looking its best, sunscreen is a must, no matter the time of year, as is a daily hit of moisturiser.

What does Winter mean for my heart health?

Blood pressure tends to be higher in Winter due to the heart having to work harder to pump blood through the body. If you’re taking any heartrelated medication, get yourself in the habit of taking it at the same time each day and schedule reminders to fill your prescriptions when needed. Regular check-ins with your GP are a good idea as well as tracking any variations in your blood pressure using an at-home monitor. Omron HEM-7156 Automatic Blood Pressure Monitor, $179.
