THE SKINNY ON LUNG CANCER November is Lung Cancer Awareness Month. It deserves to be. In fact, maybe lung cancer awareness should get two or three months. After all, lung cancer is the #1 cancer killer in the US, claiming more lives than breast, colon, pancreatic and prostate cancers combined.

The problem with lung cancer is that a mere 15% of lung cancer cases are found in the early stages of the disease, when the survival rate is well above 50%. The vast majority of cases aren’t diagnosed until late stages, at which point the survival rate is an anemic 3.9%. Those frightening statistics suggest that virtually any symptom that suggests the mere possibility of respiratory trouble should prompt a doctor visit. The symptoms to be on red alert for include a chronic cough, shortness of breath, pain when coughing or breathing, coughing up blood, and difficulty swallowing. Although the American Lung Association cites smoking as the leading risk factor for lung cancer, of the nearly 160,000 people who die annually from the disease, more than 2/3 are former smokers, or people who have never smoked. +
