ot literally! But all too many people are doing exactly that. To illustrate my point, I heard a story last week that brought home the importance — or perhaps the futility — of National Nutrition Month, a health consciousness raising event which the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (AND) says should always be followed by this symbol: ®. They don’t specify how closely it should follow, however. Anyway, back to the story. A good friend of mine was taking his father home from the hospital where he had just been discharged after undergoing a quadruple bypass operation. Among the departing prizes he was given as he left the hospital were these very clear and pointed instructions from the doctor: No fried foods! As they drove along, the hospital practically still visible in the rearview mirror, his father pointed ahead to a fast food fried chicken restaurant and said, “Turn in there.” He proceeded to place an order for, and then eat, a goodly portion of a chicken of the fried variety. Admittedly, there is the stereotype that healthy foods are less flavorful foods, devoid of all that tasty salt and sugar and fat. But in the same way stereotyping people is insulting, foods are insulted when we stereotype them. I was just talking to a lima bean about this the other day.
