The trouble with Ibreathing f there is one thing every single one of us deserves, it’s a Lifetime Achievement Award for breathing. We’ve all been doing it from our very first minute alive up to and including this very moment. You’re doing it right now. Congratulations! Unfortunately, there is a dilemma closely connected with breathing: bad breath. According to various studies, most people are more than a little concerned about bad breath, usually without cause, say the experts. (On the other hand, people with horrendously bad breath often seem completely oblivious to that fact.) You’ve probably heard the technical name for bad breath: halitosis. So many people fear halitosis without cause that there’s a word or two for that: halitophobia and pseudohalitosis. Up to 72 percent of those who seek treatment for halitosis have nothing more than halitophobia. Of those with the real thing, 90 percent of the time the problem — and the solution — is in the mouth. More about that in a moment.

Bad breath bacteria under a microscope looks like this:

When bad breath begins elsewhere Way back in 400 B.C., Hippocrates wrote about the connection between disease and breath odors. Today, even EMTs can make educated guesses about health based on a patient’s breath, even in the back of a rolling ambulance. As one example, acetone breath might suggest diabetes. Liver and kidney disorders can create distinctive breath odors too. Actually, a growing branch of diagnostic medicine is developing tests that utilize breath for tests that are now done with blood samples. Think of the advantages: you could repeat the test virtually endlessly with no pain or harm to the patient, even doing so while he’s asleep. Proponents say breath tests deliver faster results and at lower cost than blood tests, and they have a wide potential for use: breath biomarkers can diagnose, among other things, asthma, stomach ulcers, irritable bowel syndrome, lung cancer, lactose intolerance, and even transplant rejection. Even so, it may be awhile before breath tests become standard medicine. But what about plain old bad breath? Read on. Please see BREATH page 3
