PHOENIX FILM FESTIVAL 101 Hello super cool attendee! Whether you’re a film aficionado, a pop culture nerd, or one of the trailblazing creatives responsible for helping to make this event so special, we formally welcome you to the 2019 Phoenix Film Festival. In case there was ever any doubt, we’ll clear the air right now and inform you that if you love movies and you’re hoping to catch a lot of really good ones, this is absolutely the festival for you. So, take a deep breath, inhale the nearly-intoxicating scent of buttered popcorn, and hold on tight to your tickets. Here we go….. IT’S A MARATHON, NOT A SPRINT. With eleven days of film festival, we encourage you to pace yourself. Our lineup is comprised of favored festival films from this past season, beloved classics, fresh shorts and creative pieces developed from some of Arizona’s very own filmmakers – so trust us, you’ll have every opportunity to channel your inner-film nerd and expand your creative horizons over these next few days. Need some help trying to understand the categories? Check out pages 17, 23, 27, 31, 49, 52, 56, 58 and 63. Those pages will help get you zoned in on what types of movie you’ll be interested in. You’ve got eleven days, so be bold and see a little bit of everything.

80 PAGES OF ADVICE Consider this quirky little program to be your most valued and treasured possession at this year’s festival, as it’s jam-packed with informative tidbits, synopses of featured, buzzworthy flicks, and even our official film screening schedule, which can be found on pages 40 to 46. This book is a novelty item and it’s an integral part of ensuring that you get the most out of your festival-going experience. You can also find specific film location information in our handy index on pages 77 and 78. Additionally, the individual film pages give fantastic insight into what a specific film is about and who made it. We’ve even included a photo still from each movie for all of you cinematography-buffs. While you’re flipping through the pages of this program, be sure to also take a look at our sponsors and show them some love. We wouldn’t be able to put on this festival – and to continue expanding it and making it better every year – without them and their continued support.

PASSES AND TICKETS ARE THE KEY TO THE CINEMA Our Festival Ticket Center is just the ticket for movie fun. We are located a few doors east of the Harkins Scottsdale 101 Theatre with a big banner over the door - you can’t miss it! The Ticket Center is your go-to for purchasing any tickets or passes, as well as picking up any tickets or passes purchased online. It’s important to know that even if you have a pass, you still need a physical ticket to see a film --- and the Ticket Center is your place to go! Our Ticket Center is staffed with a handful of friendly volunteers who are here to make sure you have the best Festival experience possible. While they’re obviously very cool, talented and stylish – among many other things – please remember that they are not magicians. We encourage you to get your tickets early before your top picks sell out. Once tickets are gone, they’re gone! And with our lineup this year, a pass to one of our feature films is arguably the hottest ticket in the Valley. Want to get more bang for your buck? Pro tip: Buy a pass. You can save a bit of money and catch more of the great films playing at the festival.

EVERYBODY LINE UP. SINGLE FILE PLEASE. If there was ever a line that actually felt worth it to wait in, it’s undoubtedly the ticket line at the Phoenix Film Festival. No, seriously. Beyond getting the build-up of excitement for all of

the films and events that lie ahead at this year’s festival while waiting in line, you’ll find that there’s also a remarkable sense of comradery among our attendees. Whether you’re an amateur to our festival or you’ve visited enough times to lose count, you’ll fit right in with our audiences. And hey, you might even find a movie buddy along the way. So, chat up your fellow line members and get the scoop on the best films they’ve seen so far this year, or the ones they’re ready to rush to the theater to see this summer. We have 3 different lines based on the type of pass or ticket you have. • Line 1 is for VIP/Filmmakers/Press/Golden Ticket. If you have one of those passes, your group will be seated first. • Line 2 is for Festival passholders. You seat next. • Line 3 is for Super Flex Pass/Flex Pass/Single Ticket holders. If you want to be seated earlier, you can upgrade at any point onsite at the Festival Ticket Center!

AND YOU THOUGHT IT WAS JUST MOVIES. So, you’ve been watching movie after movie, and now you feel like you need a break? Well first, that sounds like a pretty good problem to have. And second, lucky for you, we’ve got more than just movies going for us. Head on over to the biggest film party in Arizona, with the Arizona Republic Party Pavilion during Opening Weekend. There you’ll find music, bars, parties, and even free filmmaker panels. Don’t forget to check out our silent auction where you can bid on cool stuff while helping out this awesome non-profit!

WHAT’S WITH ALL OF THESE FILMMAKERS? Sure, you could be perfectly content watching a great film festival movie. But what if we told you there would also be filmmakers there talking about how the movie was made? Of course, you’d be ridiculously excited. Ridiculously! Maybe the only thing that filmmakers actually love more than making movies is… well, talking about them. You can hear them do just that immediately following many festival screenings. Don’t be shy; feel free to ask your questions about their films. Don’t worry, they’re friendly. And also, sometimes really funny. And they’re just excited to share their art with you!

HOW COOL ARE OUR VOLUNTEERS? If volunteering is cool, then consider PFF volunteers the Idris Elbas of film festivals. We’re putting it out there. Our volunteers are truly the coolest. They’re helpful, they’re energetic and they’re arguably one of our favorite things about the festival. We might be biased, but they’re also super fashionable and stylish in their PFF volunteer shirts. If you have any questions, please reach out to them and they’ll gladly get you answers or point you in the right direction. Also, give them a hearty thanks for volunteering their time to this great non-profit organization. Well, that should do it. This should get you on your way to enjoying the 2019 Phoenix Film Festival. Have a great time and thanks for being a part of Arizona’s largest film festival.

CLOSING NIGHT FILM: THE FAREWELL

Closing Night Film: The Farewell Run Time: 100 minutes Screening Time: Sunday, April 14 at 7:00pm Directed by: Lulu Wang Cast: Awkwafina, Tzi Ma, Diana Lin, Zhao Shuzhen, Lu Hong, Jiang Yongbo Synopsis: After learning their beloved matriarch has terminal lung cancer, a family opts not to tell her about the diagnosis, instead scheduling an impromptu wedding-reunion back in China. Headstrong and emotional writer, Billi, rebels against her parents’ directive to stay in New York and joins the family as they awkwardly attempt to rekindle old bonds, throw together a wedding that only grandma is actually looking forward to, and surreptitiously say their goodbyes. A heartfelt celebration of both the way we perform family and the way

we live it, “The Farewell” masterfully interweaves a gently humorous depiction of the good lie in action, with a thoughtful exploration of how our cultural heritage does and does not travel with us when we leave our homes. Writer/director Lulu Wang imbues “The Farewell” with warmth and wit, while the uniformly excellent

ensemble cast (anchored by a breakout performance by Awkwafina) invites us to share this extended clan’s joy and sorrow—and to feel, for the length of this remarkable film, like a part of their family. Presented in part by a donation from Reel Friend Donna Wool

Screening Time: Saturday, April 6 at 7:25pm

Directed by: Jill Magid

Directed by: Claire McCarthy

Cast: Daisy Ridley, George MacKay, Naomi Watts and Clive Owen

Synopsis: “The Proposal” follows conceptual artist Jill Magid as she develops a radical project to explore artistic legacy. At its heart is the work of the Pritzker Prize-winning Mexican architect, Luis Barragán, which is aggressively “protected” and kept from the public by its copyright holders. By cultivating relationships with Barragán’s family, admirers, institutions and the rights holders—including extensive correspondence with the director of the Barragan Foundation—Magid consequently constructs a thoughtful love story between the director, herself, and the architect. Ultimately, “The Proposal” is a startling, provocative work that forces the viewer into reckoning with how an artist’s story is told, and who is permitted to do the telling.

Synopsis: Set in medieval Denmark but spoken in a sharp, contemporary voice, OPHELIA boldly shifts the perspective of Shakespeare’s classic tragedy, placing the drama’s complex young female character at center stage. A wild and motherless child, Ophelia is taken into Elsinore Castle under the wing of Queen Gertrude, becoming her most trusted lady-in-waiting. Soon Ophelia captures the attention of Gertrude’s son, the handsome Prince Hamlet, and as she learns the ways of power, an undeniable love between the couple blossoms in secret. But when the murder of Hamlet’s father drives the Prince into a downward spiral of vengeance, Ophelia struggles to protect a dangerous secret. As war brews, lust and betrayal are tearing Elsinore Castle apart from within. Ophelia must decide between her true love and her own life. As she is interrogated, Joan relives the dramatic events that shaped her life and beliefs: her student days at Cambridge, where she excelled at physics while challenging deep-seated sexism; her tumultuous love affair with a dashing political radical (Tom Hughes); and the devastation of World War II, which inspired her to risk everything in pursuit of peace. Based on a sensational true story, Red Joan vividly brings to life the conflicts—between patriotism and idealism, love and duty, courage and betrayal—of a woman who spent a lifetime being underestimated while quietly changing the course of history. The Tomorrow Man

Synopsis: How does a man who is—literally—paralyzed by happiness find love? Thanks to a condition called cataplexy—a rare disorder that causes him to lose control of his muscles whenever he is overcome by strong emotion, particularly joy—Brooklyn librarian Charlie (Martin Freeman) has learned to carefully edit all delight-triggering people, places, and events out of his life. Family weddings, cute babies, adorable puppies, and, yes, romance are all fraught with peril in Charlie’s carefully managed world. But when the beautiful, spontaneous Francesca (Morena Baccarin) falls for him, the risk-averse Charlie finds himself at a crossroads: suppress his feelings of attraction, or take a chance and let love in? Based on a true story originally featured on This American Life, Ode to Joy is a hilarious and touching look at what happens when we stop being afraid and let ourselves truly live.

Run Time: 95 minutes

Presented in part by a donation from Reel Friend Elizabeth Stewart

Screening Time: Saturday, April 13 at 7:35pm Directed by: Noble Jones Cast: John Lithgow, Blythe Danner Synopsis: Ed Hemsler spends his life preparing for a disaster that may never come. Ronnie Meisner spends her life shopping for things she may never use. In a small town somewhere in America, these two people will try to find love while trying not to get lost in each other’s stuff. Mashit directed by Ryûhei Kitamura takes place in a Boarding School where staff and pupils are possessed by Demons. A dark and unflinching film with echoes of “Lolita” and “The Shining”, “Automata” makes a bold and timely statement against the system of patriarchy, by exploring how the very notion of love can be perverted by misogyny and abuse, and how that corruption reverberates through the ages.
