Here at SalonNV HQ , we thought it was about time we celebrated the incredible wealth of talent within the hair and beauty industries in Scotland and we hope this is just the start of doing that as, let’s face it, you’re pretty fabulous!

From featuring as our salon or stylist of the month, to showcasing your news and products: we want to show highlight the innovative, diverse and exciting people involved in the industry north of the border.

This is a trade magazine, featuring people like you, for people like you.

I have had the pleasure of being guest editor of the first edition and it has proved quite an education.

From a fascinating interview with

Sandra Vaughan on Fake Bake, where I learned about her journey to the top, to a step into the world of cosmetic procedures with our resident expert, Dr Nestor; it really has been brilliant to be a part of the first mag. I have discovered just how much there is in the Scottish hair and beauty world to shout about.

Covering Trevor Sorbie’s charity, mynewhair, truly struck a chord - you’ll see why when you read the article - and discovering some weird and wonderful products, including the tan-tastic Tan Eraser, has been very exciting, not to mention a godsend for my dodgy fake tan moments.

SCOTTISH NEWS Scotland’s first ‘eco’ college

E

dinburgh College has opened the doors of Scotland’s first ‘eco’ college hair and beauty Academy at its Granton campus.

As salons increasingly seek to adopt a more eco friendly ethos, the academy provides a range of environmental features, including a ceramic fuel cell that uses hydrogen to convert gas to electricity and produce hot water as a by-product. It also houses a hot water heat recovery system, which means that it takes even less energy to heat the water to the required temperature.

It is hoped the academy’s green credentials could save the college £2,500 per year.

Edinburgh College worked with specialist sustainable salon designer Charlie Hearn, whose designs have won numerous green awards.

He said: “The hair industry is so wasteful in energy and recycling. It was a pleasure to work with the college

team, who wanted to look at as many green solutions as the budget would allow as well as meet certain design criteria. It had to be a full commercial salon to match those on the high street, allowing students to train in a proper working environment. Not only that but it is hoped that graduates would take these green credentials with them when they go into the workplace.”

Students at the new academy will also benefit from industry partnerships with top hair company Wella and beauty company Elemis. They will receive certified training and workshops to enhance their learning experience and prepare them for the world of employment.

Frances Bain, curriculum manager for Hairdressing, Beauty & Complementary Therapies at Edinburgh College, said: “The new academy gives our students the opportunity to work in one of the

most up to date salon environments, which exceeds many salons out there in the industry today.

“The eco-friendly aspects and recycling plan will help educate our students and encourage sustainability.

On top of this, it has special filtration hoods that extract particles from the atmosphere to improve the air quality within the salon. This enables students who suffer from asthma to work at ease and with confidence, giving them the opportunity to fulfil their dream of becoming a hairdresser. “ “The new academy will offer many exciting opportunities for our students and we are excited to get started.

Already we have been approached by Wella to host the UK Wella Exposure competition in April 2015.”

Scottish Nail Tech 2015

I

HD Brows Training Academy Worth banging on about...

T

he award-winning brow treatment, has launched a training academy in Glasgow.

Salon NV, Beauty bloggers and press headed along to the new premises at 130-132 West Regent Street Glasgow, for a treatment.

Celebrity make-up artists were also on hand using the 80-strong Make Up by HD Brows products. Nilam Holmes-Patel, CEO said: “I am thrilled our Glasgow HD Brows academy is open. Our website had 4,800 unique visitors last month. My team loved educating guests in both brows and make-up. It was a pleasure to meet HD enthusiasts, we can’t wait to welcome them back.”

INDUSTRY NEWS New MD for Sally Salon Services

ally Beauty Holdings UK & Ireland announced the promotion of Michael Dewey to managing director, taking effect on April 7.

Dewey replaces Richard Hull who has left the business to pursue other interests.

Dewey joined SBH in 2005 and was promoted to vice president of strategy and global transactions in 2008.

Commenting on Dewey’s new appointment, SBH president Christian Brickamn said: “Michael brings tremendous experience across both our North American and European businesses and I am delighted to welcome him into his new role.”

Warren Scar will take over from Alan Revitt as chief marketing officer.

Scarr previously worked at B&Q, where he led the company’s customer strategy. He also has experience with J Sainsbury and the Woolworths Group.

Counterfeiting cost beauty industry £201 million a year

Shared parental leave changes are here, is your salon ready?

S

alon owners are being reminded that from 5 April eligible expectant parents will be able to start sharing parental leave in their child’s first year.

These significant changes offer an alternative to traditional maternity leave, where employed mothers are entitled to 52 weeks of maternity leave and 39 weeks of statutory maternity pay. Mothers can now choose to end their maternity leave early and share leave time with their partner or the child’s father.

As long as both parents are eligible, leave can be taken in blocks separated by periods of work, instead of taking it all in one go and both parents can be on leave at the same time.

NHF president Paul Curry said: “It’s important salon owners understand their responsibilities and know what needs to be done if staff are requesting shared parental leave.

“This change means mothers and fathers have more freedom to manage their childcare and work commitments in the first year. In the hair and beauty industry where over 90% of workers are female, sharing parental leave with fathers may make it easier for mothers to come back to work earlier. Stylists who are out of the salon for a long period can find it hard to re-build their columns, whereas fathers may be in a job where their absence has less direct impact on their earnings.”

201million is lost every year in the UK’s cosmetic and personal care sector due to counterfeiting, which represents 6% of total sales in the sector.

Within the EU as a whole, that figure rises to £3.4billion or 7.8% of total sales lost due to counterfeit beauty products, according to a new report from the Office for Harmonization in the Internal Market (OHIM).

OHIM said that lost revenue translates into 50,000 lost jobs, as the legitimate industry sells less than it would have done in the absence of counterfeiting, and therefore employs fewer workers.

OHIM president Antonio Campinos said, “This repost is just the first in a series of reports which, when taken together, will show the negative economic impact of counterfeiting and piracy on the EU economy.”

He added that a further £1.2billion of Government money is lost due to the fact that sellers of the fake beauty products are not paying income tax or VAT.

Season specific beauty launches on the rise

S

easonality is the latest trend in beauty, according to analysts at Mintel - with brands launching products targeting the effects of specific weather conditions.

Alongside seasonal colour collections, skincare products reflecting seasonality are rising. According to Mintel, 11.1% of beauty launches in 2014 were seasonal, up from 9.8% in 2011.. “There is scope to develop products that appeal to consumers’ emotional needs.

Conditions such as Seasonal Affective Disorder are now widely understood by consumers and the time is ripe for innovations that appeal to these ailments as well as products that appeal to people’s optimism during the warm weather,” commented Vivienne Rudd, director of insight at Mintel’s Beauty and Personal Care division.

Beauty Works survey shows popularity of hair extensions Popular hair extensions brand Beauty Works carried out a survey to find out what people really think of hair extensions. Are they something people are afraid to admit they are wearing? Far from it!

According to Beauty Works, 78% of respondents said they’d admit to friends, family and colleagues that they were wearing extensions. Extensions can also provide much more than just fuller, longer locks. 85% of respondents said they’d wear hair extensions to boost their self esteem. And are they time consuming and difficult to manage? 67% of women who wear hair extensions spend less than 25 minutes on their hair.

With extensions now coming in more varied styles than ever, what is the most popular trend at the moment? 59% of customers said the beach waves styles was their favourite trend. We expect to see plenty of beach babes walking around Scotland this summer... just remember your brolly.

Salons to create 28,000 apprentice positions in 2015

M

ore than half (53%) of UK salons plan to take on at least one apprentice this year, creating more than 28,000 apprentice positions. The news contained within Salon Services’ fourth annual Beautiful Britain report, which surveys 2,257 industry professionals, has given a major boost to National Apprenticeship Week (March 9-13).

The report also revealed the industry proposes to add a further 23,000 jobs to the UK economy in 2015, with 37% of salons planning to hire additional staff this year.

While the outlook is positive for the growth of the industry, it is hampered by the lack of client loyalty, as more than half (58%) of respondents believe it is scarce. The vast majority (80%) of industry professionals attribute this reduction in loyalty to an increased appetite among clients to find the cheapest deal – fuelled by online discount sites and social media.

Treatment prices remained stable last year, but time between treatments increased across the board - impacting tanning, facials and manicures. Length of time between tanning sessions grew from 22 to 51 days, while manicures and pedicure services saw an increase in time between treatments of 67% and 52% respectively. It’s not all negative however, as 91% of UK salons saw an overall boost in profits.

Therapist’s found to be second highest earners in Industry

eauty therapists have the second highest earning potential in the hair and beauty industry with mobile hairdressers taking first place, according to a recent study conducted by Babtac.

The survey also found that full-time mobile technicians earn on average £420 per month, more than those who are employed in a salon or working environment.

Sarah Condon, marketing and membership manager at Babtac, said, “The beauty industry was hit as hard as any other luxury market in recent times, so it is great to see the earning potential of those in the industry in cold, hard figures - they suggest that there is certainly money to be earned in the beauty field.”

812 British people took part in the survey, all of whom were aged 18 and over and had worked full-time in the hair and beauty industry for a minimum of 12 months.

When asked how much money they were paid on a monthly basis, the results revealed that the highest average earners are hairdressers with £1,850, followed by beauty therapists, £1,695, and the third highest earners are sports therapists with £1,458 a month.

“So that’s another sign that this is a really viable, positive career choice for young women and men looking for inspiration and perhaps even deciding what they want to do once they finish school,” added Condon.

The respondents were divided into groups, either in mobile/self employed or employed in a salon, and the results showed that those who were employed earned an average of £1,330 per month compared to full-time mobile professionals earned an average of £1,750.

Have you ‘costed’ the cost of commission payments for holiday pay yet?

B

usiness owners must take into account commission payments when they calculate holiday pay for employees, NHF warns.

An Employment Tribunal has this week ruled that UK law must reflect a decision from the European Court of Justice, which said commission payments should be included in holiday pay calculations if a worker’s total pay usually includes commissions.

Hilary Hall NHF chief executive said: “We have long been advising salon owners to include commissions in their holiday pay calculations.

There is little detail yet on how employers should calculate this, so we are continuing to advise salons owners to look over the last three months and use the average to calculate a fair holiday pay rate for employees who receive commission.

It’s good news that a resolution has been

reached on this long debated topic. But the decision will push up wage bills for any business owners who have not previously taken commissions into account when calculating holiday pay.

Last November an employment tribunal ruled that compulsory overtime has to be included when calculating holiday pay, although this is going to appeal. As many salons don’t pay compulsory overtime, this earlier ruling is less likely to affect salon owners than the new ruling on commissions.

Industry Heavyweight to launch new beauty training school

F

ormer director of operations at Babtac Julie Speed is launching a new beauty and holistic training school with business partner Debbie Moore. Opening next month in Gloucestershire, the International Beauty & Holistic Academy will offer a range of beauty qualifications as well as a post-graduate finishing school for salon and spa teams.

Speed said, “Before working for Babtac, I had experiences of students applying for jobs, who weren’t actually salon-ready but thought perhaps this was because of my own expectations. We realised a real need for high quality training for both students starting out and those already trained.”

The new school will offer qualifications and courses from Itec and VTCT, as well as product training from Thalgo and Decléor. Attached to a beauty salon with experienced therapists, students will be given the opportunity to learn in a real-life salon scenario and be able to put any postgraduate training to the test. housands of hairdressers descended on Manchester in March to attend the annual Pro Hair Live event.

At the heart of the event was the Fellowship Stage, where visitors heard from industry leaders including Errol Douglas MBE and the F.A.M.E team 2015.

Record numbers turn out for Cosmoprof

C

osmoprof Worldwide Bologna 2015, took place last month, attracting record numbers, exceeding all expectations. Cosmoprof is billed as the ‘leading 360° worldwide event for the professional beauty sector and an international platform for the cosmetics and wellness industry.’

248,000 visitors attended the event (+20% compared to 2014), with 79,000 coming from abroad.

With 2493 exhibitors, of which 70% came from abroad, thousands of journalists and bloggers; the Italian event provides a massive business opportunity to companies and beauty professionals.

How did you get into nail art?

Since then, I have done advanced and nail art courses with Calgel, and I’ve recently managed to achieve Premier Status with Calgel too.

Who / what inspires you?

I have many many nail idols! Ginny and Donny Greer from Hey Nice Nails, Nancy Mc, Astrowifey, Naomi Yasuda, and Leah Light (to name a few).

Inspiration for my clients’ nails is normally a joint effort between both of us. They may show me a photo of an outfit or bring me a piece of fabric.

Sometimes they just give me a colour they had in mind, or tell me a style / current trend they love... we take it from there.

COSMETIC SURGERY IN THE SALON The world of cosmetic surgery and medicine is an ever changing, ever evolving one, with more people than ever before looking to undergo treatments and procedures.

W

ith many beauty salons now keen to incorporate cosmetic procedures into their offering, we thought it would be a good idea to ask an expert for advice on who should be carrying this out, what type of setup you need and to offer wisdom on the type of products and treatments clients are looking for.

Therefore, let us introduce to Salon NV’s Medical Cosmetic Doctor and expert, Dr Nestor.

Dr Nestor runs the Age Refined Cosmetic Medical practice at St George’s Cross Glasgow with his wife, Nurse Practitioner Michelle, and he is happy to answer your questions about services, treatments and results.

He told us: “Cosmetic medicine is now very much about helping people age gracefully.

Putting volume and definition back to where it was and preventing ageing features like deepset lines, which are difficult to simply resolve later in life.”

Dr Nestor’s ethos is that he wants people “to look like themselves on their best day.”

He said: “It’s about airbrushing and tweaking a few thinks to make the skin look healthier, and the face more youthful, and bring out your potential.”

That’s what many people are looking for when they embark on cosmetic procedures, but there are some who, largely thanks to images in the media, want the more extreme result – blown up lips and puffed out cheeks.

Dr Nestor is not keen on this and said it should be about “doing the least amount of work to get the best results.”

He said: “You cannot make someone have Megan Fox’s lips but you can help them make the most of what they have.”

Although repeat business is key, subtle changes can make the biggest difference to someone’s life and help you win a long-term client.

So, as a salon owner, what should you look for when it comes to recruiting someone to carry out treatments?

Dr Nestor said: “There are key questions to ask: is the person a doctor, dentist or nurse prescriber? Largely, legally, only these people can carry out treatments using botulinum toxins (a prescription only medication) and dermal fillers.”

Other points to raise are: “Are they insured?

Do they have proof of previous work they have carried out? Do they offer an after care service to ensure treatments have worked? Will they give their contact details so the client can get in contact if they have any problems? Do they go over a client’s medical history and have them sign a consent form?”

Wise words Dr Nestor, but amongst the many treatments that are on the market at the moment, which are proving most popular?

“There’s been a huge shift in focus from the surgical world to the non-surgical world.

“BOTOX(R), dermal fillers, chemical peels, non-surgical rejuvenation and the one-stitch lift are all high on the agenda.”

There’s also been a shift in attitude towards treatments: no longer viewed purely as vanity products, many can also help people feel generally better about themselves and Dr Nestor believes there is nothing better than when a client tells him how he has improved their life.

Something many salon owners will be able to relate to, whether it be that life-boosting haircut or make-up transformation for a special day.

To put it another way: Great service = great reward/Poor service = poor reward. Assuming you offer retail products and services which you truly believe in, while providing great value to the client, all you need now is to add expert service to really maximise your salon potential.

Clients want help and guidance and they would rather give their business to an expert. Here are my 7 steps to becoming an expert...

1. Product-ivity

It is virtually impossible to maintain high sales volumes without an intimate knowledge of the services and products you sell.

Selling your services usually means educating your clients about their skin and about the products you sell. On-going training, revising product manuals, seeking advice from experienced therapists and reading professional articles are vital to keeping your product knowledge up to date.

‘Listening is positioning’. After you ask a question, be quiet, and start to really listen to the client. They will tell you everything

you need to know. Telling is not selling. Think dialogue; not monologue.

Don’t talk when it is decision time. Instead, when you want to

close the sale, be quiet and wait for the client to respond. This

does feel uncomfortable, but you have to sweat it out, let them

Always think from the client’s perspective, if you were your client, would you buy from you?......

Your client is seeking help, so what happens when you are courteous, caring, take time to listen, understand the concern and work to fix it? The client can’t

about sowing and reaping. Your reward is equal to your service. If your focus is to provide expert service, you will get more referrals, receive excellent testimonials and maintain a successful business.

As one of Scotland’s top business women, Sandra Vaughan has helped make Fake Bake one of the most recognised and admired beauty brands in the country.

H

er hard work and determination has seen her thrive in the ever evolving tanning and beauty industry and as she gears up to launch yet more exciting ventures, we decided to reflect on her journey to the top.

Sandra started out with a hairdressing apprenticeship in House of Fraser, Stirling, before going on to own her own sunbed salon, where she did beauty and nails.

Coming from a family of sun worshippers, she was used to everyone regularly using the beds, but when her mother discovered a mole on her face, which had to be removed, Sandra began to realise the dangerous effects over exposure to UV light could have.

Doing her research into tanning products, she discovered Fake Bake products in the US. When she tested them out, she was won over and after visiting the American lab where they were made; she took the life changing decision to sell the salon and invest everything she had to bring the brand to the UK. Brave move, but one which certainly paid off.

Sandra recognised that there was a gap in the market for a more natural looking colour and as Fake Bake didn’t add stains or dye, it meant it enhanced the natural pigment of skin and avoided the orange appearance she saw with so many other fake tans.

But it was no easy sell. The first year was extremely hard work and a lot of time and money was spent getting people to try it out. Sandra’s eureka moment came when she took on a PR agency who took the product to media houses in London and it proved a hit. By the time Fake Bake was in its second year in the UK, the brand had become a household name.

Popular in both salons and high street shops, Sandra said: “Our heritage is the salon business and as a brand we like to make sure our salons are looked after, but consumer buying habits have changed over the last decade, as have salon treatments.

“When we first started, we offered hand applied creams, but spray tanning has rapidly taken over so retailing the products has become less, but the demand for the brand has become greater, so

making the products available on the high street was the sensible way forward.

“Consumers now also tend to buy known brands online for convenience so salons are now stocking less retail products and focusing more on treatments so we are focusing on supporting them with this.”

Fake Bake has proved extremely popular amongst celebrity clients and Sandra said: “We have been very lucky that we have genuine fans of the brand who have been loyal to us for years.

Most brands pay for celebrity endorsement but all our celebrities come from recommendations and are now great ambassadors for us and that always gets us great press.”

Sandra hasn’t been immune to the tough times many have faced in business, but with an ever evolving product, company and brand, she is now Global Consultant to the parent company of the brand and gearing up for one of her biggest years yet.

“Research your market and your product, ingredients are the key to a successful product. So many beauty products are a great PR story but have no substance, so their lifeline will be short. Our products never give false claims like so many others and consumers are wise so make sure your products are what they say they are before you spend your time and money investing in them. Be prepared to work long hours and make no money for a long time but believe in what you are doing and hark work will always pay off. THE IMPORTANCE OF A GREAT RECEPTIONIST The receptionist is usually the first person clients come into contact with, whether that is in the salon or on the phone, therefore they play a key role in creating that vital first impression.

Steven Gunnip, Director of Salon Evolution, discusses why a great receptionist is a key investment for any salon.

A

ny salon business looking to make its mark needs to ensure it has an exemplary customer care policy in place from the start. Every client journey begins from the first point of contact, which is why a great receptionist or front of house is vital. Many salon owners believe that having a receptionist is an expense to the business they simply can’t afford; after all it’s hard to quantify how much revenue this role can bring. I’m firmly of the belief, however, that no salon should operate without a front of house member of staff, and that every salon neglecting to employ someone in this role is missing a trick in terms of structure and success.

One of the key factors in any successful salon business is maximising every second of time available in the best and most productive way possible. To enable this to happen, there needs to be structure in place across all departments and for every member of staff, particularly stylists and therapists, to have a clear idea of the activity scheduled for the day or week ahead, so they can move seamlessly from one client to the next. A great receptionist ensures that everybody understands the role that they play in the working day and what is needed to ensure the smooth day-to-day running of the business, which in turn benefits staff and ensures maximum client satisfaction.

Receptionists can keep no-shows to a minimum by calling every client before their visit and confirming or rearranging their appointment; ensuring that columns and time slots are filled, leaving no time of day unaccounted for every stylist or therapist; and be proactive in making sure that clients re-book their next appointment before they leave. All of these details bring money into the business that cannot be underestimated.

A good front of house should be enthusiastic and resourceful, acting as a sales person, organiser, motivator and problem solver all rolled into one; a concierge for the salon staff and valued clientele. A client’s personal taste and preference should be their forte; they should know every existing client by name as well as their likes and dislikes. A great receptionist will look at client notes before each person arrives to give an individual touch to the client experience. Noting down information the client mentioned when they last visited, things they liked and how they had their hair or treatment done, for example, can provide great points of conversation with each client upon their return, starting the visit with the client feeling appreciated and attended to. It is these little touches that all

create a great client experience, setting a business apart from its competitors, and increasing the chances of repeat custom and client loyalty.

Staff running late or running over between appointments can often be an unavoidable part of salon life. When clients arrive for their appointment, it is important that they are made to feel at home right away and any time spent waiting is as enjoyable as can be. A good receptionist’s first port of call is always to be a friendly face with a positive greeting for every client who walks through the door. If a stylist or therapist is running behind, the front of house staff should ensure they feel welcome, are kept entertained and feel that their custom and time is valued, meaning that, from the word go, the client journey is a positive experience. At the end of the appointment, receptionists can build a further rapport with the client, asking them about the products used on their hair during their treatment and if they would like to take any away with them, leading to potential additional retail spend. This is also when clients can be asked if they would like to re-book another appointment – posing the question greatly heightens the chance of the client booking in for another time. The receptionist can also recommend additional products or treatments that may suit the client’s needs and, as the receptionist will be the person that calls with a reminder about their appointment, this continuity builds up a relationship between the client and the salon as whole.

The lack of a receptionist in a salon can leave the team feeling disorganised, not knowing which client is booked in when or with whom, leading to a feeling of frustration and a lack of confidence in procedures and processes. If a hairdresser or a beauty therapist is doing a great job, providing excellent treatments to a loyal client base, but they are being let down through disorganisation, or their clients cannot book in with them at a convenient time because of poor time management, this can be disheartening, leaving them feeling that the great work is not being maximised.

A great receptionist is therefore an essential part of the effective running of a salon, both for management and staff in equal measure, and a great asset in retaining a happy and loyal customer base. Having a receptionist that acts as the eyes and ears of the business will not only pay for itself, but will actually go the extra mile in increasing business income as a whole, while having the added bonus of building a positive brand perception to both new and existing clients.

MYNEWHAIR CHARITY

W

hen I was diagnosed with leukaemia in 2009, one of the first questions I asked was ‘am I going to lose my hair?’

That may sound vain or shallow to some, but so much of my life had changed as soon as the doctor uttered the words ‘you have cancer’, I was terrified my hair, which has always formed a big part of my identity, was going to be taken away too.

Thankfully, the form of treatment I undergo means, for now, I have been able to hold on to my locks, but I know so many who have not been as lucky and losing your hair is just another distressing side effect of the treatment.

Hair loss, through cancer, alopecia or any other illness can be extremely emotional but Trevor Sorbie MBE has set up a charity to help deal with this – mynewhair.

The charity provides a caring online advice and support service to individuals across the country suffering from medical hair loss. They also train and support a network of over 500 hair professionals to provide a wig cutting and styling service so that wigs can look as natural as possible.

Trevor set up mynewhair after his sister-in law was diagnosed with cancer and lost her hair as a

result of chemotherapy.

She asked Trevor to help her as she wanted to look like herself again. Astounded by her reaction, he has now made it his mission that women across the country will have this same opportunity. He describes this service as his form of ‘psychological medicine’ that provides a missing link in cancer treatment. It is something I know will be a comfort to many, including friends I have met on my journey with cancer.

For stylists looking to get involved; mynewhair offers training seminars up to 10 times per year which are held at L’Oréal Academies.

Qualified hairdressers must undertake first level training before they can join the network. After completing training, salon details, including quite a few throughout Scotland, are entered on to the website which clients can then access to find a salon to help them. Some stylists also choose to undertake second level training, which focuses upon troubleshooting problems, hair care during and after re-growth and a seminar on body image.

As well as handling hair and wigs, mynewhair focuses on training on how to deal with the potential vulnerability of people experiencing hair loss and a nurse led interactive communication session is an important part of both seminars.

revor Sorbie started off life in Paisley and quit school at 15 with no qualifications. He joined his family business – a twoseat barber shop in Ilford, Essex, run by his father and it is there his love of hairdressing began. When Trevor joined his local hairdressing school, he met hairdressing legend Vidal Sassoon – an encounter which would change his life forever. By 1972, as a stylist for Sassoon, Trevor had become a household name, going on to work in salons including Toni & Guy and John Frieda.

Trevor quickly became a favourite stylist with celebrities and fellow hairdressers alike and in 1986, seven years after launching the Covent Garden Salon, he also launched his own product range, which is now sold across the globe.

The Paisley lad has picked up countless awards over the year, including the BHA British Hairdresser of the Year - the most prestigious accolade in the industry - four times. In 2004, he was awarded an M.B.E. at Buckingham Palace for his services to hairdressing.

Trevor has always mentored his team and firmly believes in the philosophy of “real hair, for real people” and “taking the ordinary and making it extraordinary”.

We caught up with Garry Spencer from the event to find out more about his world and what he thinks of current trends.

Garry has been involved in the hairdressing and barbering world for over 30 years, having owned his own business over 23 years. The renowned barber is also heavily involved in education, taking seminars in America, London and throughout Europe.

Precision clipper cutting has been around for a while now and is not going anywhere fast.

Close faded styles with length on top are still at the forefront of the barbering boom.

Texture is making a comeback with soft perms making an appearance this year to give extra movement on top. Waves and movement through the longer lengths are going to be big this year.

Product is king, whatever the style, and the correct product is essential. Dear Barber range has a been a massive success this year with shaping cream and mattifier proving extremely popular. Another cool product is Bona Fide Pomade, which is particularly popular with looks that require that extra shine.

THE HAIR COUNCIL

Set up by an Act of Parliament in 1964, the Hair Council enables hairdressers to apply to become State Registered.

T

he Hair Council encourage to join the UK Register of Qualified Hairdressers and aim to advance and improve professionalism within the hairdressing industry. State Registration provides clients with the guarantee that the hairdresser or barber styling their hair has the appropriate qualification to be in the hairdressing industry or that they have worked as a hairdresser for more than six years.

The Hair Council have two main objectives - to increase the amount of hairdressers who voluntarily join the UK Register of Qualified Hairdressers and to bring a parliamentary debate, leading to a statutory change so that all practising hairdressers need to be registered in order to work in the UK. Having the ability to promote yourself as a State Registered Hairdresser will instantly let existing and potential clients know that you are a professionally qualified hairdresser.

If you have been working as a qualified hairdresser for at least two years, you are eligible to become State Registered for only £35. By becoming State Registered you will receive advice and access to materials to promote your status, discounts on insurance and an opportunity to become a Master Craftsman. Also, the Hair Council will include you in their “find a hairdresser” tool which helps clients and consumers looking for a skilled, local hairdresser to locate registered professionals in their area.

The Hair Council consists of a committee of respected names in the industry, including representatives of some of the most influential companies in the hairdressing industry. The council continuously look for ways to increase the profile and promote the importance of selfregulation in the hairdressing industry.

The Hair Council were honoured with the opportunity to visit 10 Downing Street and meet Prime Minister, Rt Hon. David Cameron and his special advisor to further their objective for a statutory change so that all practising hairdressers have to be registered to work in the UK. This is the first occasion in fifty years that a Prime Minister has met with representatives from the Hair Council.

The members of the Hair Council that attended the meeting explained the reasoning and benefits behind state registration and explained the successes the Council have accomplished in this past year.

Recently, the Hair Council presented a “2015 Ambassador Gathering” in a hotel in central London, where ambassadors were awarded with trophies and agreed to promote the campaign for registration. This gathering honoured ambassadors in the work they are doing by awarding their labour.

‘think tank’ which is due to meet for the first time in May this year. There has been a steering group in England and Whales tank, which have been successful in getting the importance of registration message out to the hairdressing industry in their areas. Chair of this group is Fiona Johnston, a Master Craftsman registered hairdresser who is currently a member of the Hair Council in London. Frankie Bailey tells us why she’s hoping to be top of the mops...

When Frankie Bailey was cutting hair in Eutopia Spa in Glasgow’s West End, she loved her job but knew that there was another ambition she was longing to fulfil.

inging around the salon was no longer cutting it and she decided to return to her first love – music.

Growing up, Frankie went to stage school but she later developed a passion for hairdressing and found herself developing quite a skill in the industry.

When the opportunity arose for her to write and perform a dance track, Frankie couldn’t turn it down and the return to the studio and performing reignited her musical passion and Frankie was hooked.

Torn, she attempted to juggle both hairdressing and singing at first, but when demand grew for her to perform and record in London, Frankie knew it was time to hang up her scissors and pick up the mic.

She told Salon NV: “I’ll always miss hairdressing.

I still keep on top of the latest trends and styles.

I think if you’ve been a hairdresser, that notion of looking at people’s hair and thinking what you would do never leaves you.”

And Frankie’s fashion sense and hair expertise has had its benefits when it comes to following her music ambitions.

She said: “To be a good singer and have the ability to do hair helps. I can ensure my hair looks good for shoots and performances and have much more time to spend on it than ever before.”

Indeed, that is one thing Frankie truly relishes about being away from the salon: she now has time to enjoy the pampering experience for herself!

She said: “I don’t mention that I used to be a hairdresser when I go into a salon but I ask for thorough consultations and I get some funny looks when I start asking about what dyes they are using and how many foils they are putting in.”

So what is our music missy’s style at the moment?

She said: “I have a subtle dip-dye with two blond streaks at the front. Kind of like a skunk!” We’re sure she rocks it.

Frankie currently spends most of her time in London, working on new tracks and putting together a record.

Although her heart lies in Scotland, she admits that it is difficult to truly reach her potential here, with producers and labels largely based down south.

She feels that hairdressers sometimes come across the same barriers, with Scottish stylists often losing out on top events and fashion shows.

Frankie told us: “If our hairdressers were down there, we would blow them out the water.” We second that one, Frankie.

With projects with some major names on the horizon, and a disco vibe being added to her dance repertoire, it looks like Frankie will soon be top of the pops, as well as top of the mops (sorry, but we love a pun), however she hasn’t ruled out a return to the hairdressing world in some form further down the line.

She said: “I would like to think that I could have the best of both worlds. Perhaps have a shop one day as well as my singing career. I miss the salon environment and the banter so it would be nice to have a bit of both.”

Chris talks at length about the ever-changing world of hair extensions

C

hris Christoforou began hairdressing at the age of 15, working in various salons and developing a real passion for the industry.

When hair extensions began to creep in around the late eighties, he got involved but was frustrated by the quality of hair and the fact it took practically a full day to complete one client’s extensions.

A few years ago, Chris noticed extensions becoming more accessible, affordable and available in more salons than ever before and he decided to once again get involved.

He explained: “I worked for a few different extensions brands and became an educator, training stylists in salons around the UK.” All the while, Chris kept an eye out for a product that would combine quality with value, whilst maintaining the condition of the clients’ hair: that’s when he discovered Kapello.

ur first Salon NV Stylist of the Month is Yasmin Mcmail, one of the salon owners of the award winning Rainbow Room International at George Square. 2014 was an incredible year for Yasmin and her team, as they worked their magic styling the stars and picking up major gongs at two of the biggest hairdressing awards ceremonies in the country. They also starred in BBC documentary series Do or Dye. This year, they have plans to be even bigger and better. Let’s find out a little more about the lady behind the locks…

When did you start in hairdressing?

Which celebrities have you worked with?

I started working for Rainbow Room International, as a Saturday assistant when I was 14.

We’re the resident hairstylists at T in The Park and have hosted a Rainbow Room International pop up salon backstage at the festival for the past 9 years. We’ve styled the likes of Florence Welch, Paloma Faith, Katy Perry and Emeli Sande. We’ve also worked with The Vamps, Judy Murray and Edith Bowman.

Where was your first job?

Hairdressing has been my only job and I wouldn’t have it any other way. I’ve been with Rainbow Room International since I was in school.

How long have you been working at the Rainbow Room International?

Biggest achievement?

I’ve been with the salon for 23 years, the time has gone so incredibly quickly. I can’t believe I’ve been with Rainbow Room International for that long. It’s the best job in the world. It takes a lot of hard word and dedication to be successful in the industry but if you love your craft like I do it’s more of a hobby than a job.

What is your full salon title?

I’m one of the Salon Owners, along with my business partner and best friend Dylan Brittain.

We’ve been friends for 21 years and business partners for 7. Our salon has an amazing location in George Square, right in the heart of the city.

There’s always a great buzz about the salon, we see over 1000 clients every month.

What’s the best thing about the job?

No two days are the same. One day I can be in the salon creating beautiful looks on clients, giving them a new found confidence and making them feel great about themselves (so rewarding), then the next; I can be working backstage at T in the Park, a fashion show or photo shoot in London.

Being a hairdresser isn’t always about being in the salon – a lot of my work takes place away from the salon. It’s a huge privilege to be able to make a living doing something that I absolutely love.

What’s the worst?

When you’re on the go all day on the salon floor, by the end of the day, your feet can be pretty sore!

Favourite product?

Hairdressing tool you couldn’t live without?

My GHDs, I don’t know how I’d live without them.

They’re such a versatile tool and can be used on every client to create amazing looks.

My biggest achievement, is also the salon’s biggest achievement. In 2014, we won Salon Team of the Year at two huge hairdressing events – the British Hairdressing Business Awards and the Creative Head Most Wanted Awards.

We are the only salon ever to win two awards consecutively, massive achievement within the industry!! It was such an honor to win these awards as the competition was huge, we were up against some of the biggest salons in London including Trevor Sorbie.

I’m extremely proud of the whole team, it’s been a great year for us.

Who is your dream client?

My dream client would have to be Lady Gaga, she’s so adventurous with her style.

Who do you have hair envy of?

Alexa Chung, she always looks flawless. I love her undone but done style.

What’s your favourite hairstyle?

I love soft blonde beachy waves, they’re so effortless and never go out of style. Or a Brigitte Bardot style, another classic.

Sum up Scottish style?

There’s a lot of cool people with a great image and cool hair to match. Glasgow in particular is a very style conscious city and we like to really dress up for a night out.

usten Thomson and his wife, Louise, own the prestigious Austen Thomson hairdressers on Great Junction Street, Edinburgh. With numerous awards under their belt and a favourite with style conscious clients in the capital, we thought it only right that Austen Thomson was Salon NV’s first Salon of the Month. Let’s find out a little more about Austen and Louise…

Austen, tell us about the salon?

Where did you start out?

The salon is in the vibrant Shore area of Leith and was once a bank and formerly a famous pub. Louise and I designed the interior to be comfortable with high quality finishes and furnishings.

Louise and I both started from very humble backgrounds where we worked in local salons near where we lived and through hard work, dedication, passion and commitment worked our way up to becoming manger (Louise) and artistic director (Austen) for the late George Paterson.

What makes you stand out in Edinburgh?

Our company ethos is Inspire & Evolve and this pushes us to continually look at what we are doing and always reassess how and what we do. A 360degree consultation happens prior to any work being done and this takes into consideration lifestyle, work and home hair regimes. With informative techniques during the service, our USP is that we have our clients on a future hair plan so we are considering their progression through the seasons.

What do you think of Edinburgh style?

Edinburgh style is definitely ‘less is more’. I think there is a really cool laidback scene.

What / who inspires you?

I am definitely inspired by fashion and design from the sixties. I think it is so iconic and timeless and a real time when music, fashion, hair and people changed. The session stylist Tyler Johnston is my hair inspiration.

I had the privilege of being mentored by him when I was involved in the Schwarzkopf Essential Looks global launches in Hamburg and Barcelona.

Have you won awards?

Between Louise and I, we are probably into double figures for collecting awards throughout our careers, including being shortlisted for the British Hairdressing Awards on four occassions. Since opening Austen Thomson Hair we have won three awards: Salon Design, Newcomer and Website.

What kind of clients do you attract?

The clients are from all over Scotland and we are so grateful there are some who travel from Dubai, Switzerland, London, Norway.

Biggest achievement?

Since opening the salon there has been loads of great achievements, including styling hair for Pixie Lott for various concerts in Scotland, picking up awards and being the official hair team for the Commonwealth Games Athletes Village, however the proudest day for us was qualifying our first ever assistant to Stylist, Christie Sanders, who also picked up Newcomer of the year.

Where would you like to be in 10 years’ time?

In 10 years’ time, we would love to have an extended team with our own academy. Winning Scottish Hairdresser of the year is my biggest goal.

What are you hot style tips for 2015?

Pastel toning colour isn’t going anywhere and iridescent colouring is the next big thing with tones such as Tangerine, Turquoise, Candy, Mint, Lavender and Coral taking a front seat.

Short disconnected Pixie crops, high definition high gloss bobs will also be big. Look out for shadow lighting colouring techniques. Waves and curls are still big news, with broken edged fringes also set to prove popular.

Graduation, fading and disconnections are still big news for men, with high partings and more length on top.

Famed for her flowing locks, Cheryl Fernandez-Versini made the beauty world take note when she posted a picture on instagram showing her new do, ahead of her appearance on the Graham Norton show. Since that moment, hair salons across the country have been inundated with ladies sitting in the chair and asking their stylists to take it all off, so to speak.

aul Percival (Percy), the man behind Cheryl’s chop, explained the inspiration behind the cut…

“Creating a new look has been talked about for a while but this cut was just done on the spur of the moment.

“We were backstage in Cheryl’s dressing room and we both knew the look we wanted to create, and so, an hour and a half later Cheryl had a completely new look.

“I wanted to give Cheryl a cut that was feminine and sexy and almost an easy, ‘ready to go’ cut, that daily can just fall into place.”

Choppier than a straightforward bob, Paul explained: “The cut is subtly graduated with a shaggier texture. It’s got a slight 70’s, Joan Jett texture that keeps it cool.
