INDUSTRY NEWS. Qualifying Workplace Pension Scheme. Barbershop and salon owners must have a Qualifying Workplace Pension Scheme by their ‘staging date,’ the go-live date which is assigned to businesses by the government. Many barbershops will have been notified of this date by the Pensions Regulator but some will still be waiting for their letter to arrive. Visit thepensionsregulator.gov.uk

and enter your employer PAYE number to check your staging date. As more businesses reach their staging date, providers are processing thousands of applications so there may be delays in getting a suitable pension scheme up and running. Even if you already have one, it might not be compliant with the new regulations. The NHF’s pension scheme was created specifically for salons and barbershops to help owners meet their employer obligations. nhfpensions.co.uk has more information about auto-enrolment, eligible workers and what you need to do. The NHF pension scheme is open to both members and nonmembers.

I soon started chatting to Kris and Todd at the club to see how I could come on board and the ideas that were thrown to me were exactly what I wanted and more importantly fitted into both my brand and the values of what we as a salon offer,” Ken said. The Ken Picton salon logo will now sit alongside other key sponsors on the team jerseys, with more exciting news to be announced shortly – watch this space! 6 | BARBERNV MAGAZINE

This year the final is being held at Salon International in October and the pressure is on to find the best barber in town. Davie the Barber

W

ith his brilliant talent in barbering, Davie Walker launched the cool and edgy, Davie the Barber shop two years ago in Paisley. The brick walls, funky wall art of a bearded tattooed barber and talented employee’s amiability, makes it the place to be for a cut and style or tattoo. Last year, Davie decided to open a tattoo studio with Danny McBride - the extremely talented tattoo artist now working alongside Davie, “We had to come up with a game changer and tattooing and barbering has a kind of outlaw style to it. Within about six weeks, Danny had ripped down half my shop because he was so busy,” Davie laughed. When asked who he was inspired by, he knew instantly, “Kenneth Edwards was a big inspiration. He inspired me to be the best I could be. I was working hand in hand with him, as his junior. It was a big step for me and was an honour to stand next to this guy who was an absolute legend.” Davie now takes on his own apprentices to ensure barbering in Scotland is continuously growing with talented individuals. Davie’s selflessness when it comes to training is what makes him want to open a Training Academy. “It’s definitely what I want to do. I enjoy training and think it’s time to give back to the trade.” Scottish barbering is climbing up the industry ladder and Davie said, “It’s the most exciting thing that’s going to happen in a long time with having Garry Spencer creating a buzz in Scotland. It’s even more exciting that he chose us to go in the show. We’ll be going up with Rebel Rebel, who are absolutely massive in the industry.”

SHABA: Barbering is on top Barbering is changing but some are topping their profession - hair wax, straight razors and all offering a new approach to this time tested trade. With soft rock music playing in the background, they hustle in swift motions. Removing a razor blade from a glass jar, placing it meticulously on a silver straight razor, then spray disinfectant. With a firm grip, they move the razor in careful but confident downward motions on their customer’s lower cheek, scraping away shaving cream that was generously lathered on. Others were fashioning sleek hair do’s to male customers. It’s pretty much a unique skill set and making art, using another medium. This is what Barbering is about today – and it is unmistakable that it’s taken on a new buzz and pushing through the traditional images of the short back and sides! The creations and skills are definitely on the up and up – with many new Barbering Salons opening – after all why should it just be the women that get to enjoy some pampering. Over thirty Barbering Salons entered this years’ Scottish Hair & Beauty Awards – with six across Scotland being Shortlised – “this certainly is now a very much fought over category”, said Andrew Brewster one of the founders of BarberNV. So it will be interesting to find out who the eventual winner will be! Stand by for the next update! • Boom Barbers,Edinburgh • Davie The Barber, Paisley • Esquire Barbershop, Anstruther • Rebel Rebel, Glasgow • HIM Grooming, Edinburgh • House Martin, Glasgow

The First UK Barber Battle

The first UK Barber Battle took main stage on the British Master Barbers Stand at Barber Connect on Sunday, the 28th June, where over 150 entrants took part in the first stage. The Ambassadors of the British Master Barbers Alliance picked the top ten finalists from each category. Chris Moon, Darryn Pitman and Anthony Copeland had to then place the top ten in order to decide the three favourites ready to battle head to head in the final. The quality of work entered showed incredible barbering talent from all across the UK. With around 3000 barbers at the event, crowds cheered on the contestants as they created amazing styles, closely judged by Lee Mahon, Ceo of award winning product range Dear Barber, Robert Rix of the Barber Council and more.

Men’s Hair Workshop Alan D Academy, Smithfield proved the perfect pitch for The Fellowship’s Men’s Hair Workshop on Monday 11th May. Sixteen students seized the opportunity to get up close and personal with one of five of the expert mentors representing the ever-growing men’s hairdressing sector: Joe Sloan, MHFederation, Foxy, Scarlet Moon and Marcus Giamattei/Marc Antoni. The event hosted by Edward Hemmings, was opened by Fellowship President, Bruno Marc Giamattei. “It’s great to welcome you all here this evening, the Fellowship Workshops are a very popular event and this particular evening boasted a rather lengthy waiting list. So well done to those students here this evening for your promptness in securing your place and thank you to the line-up of fabulous mentors who have proved to be such a great attraction,” Marc said. Joe Sloan from MHFed commented, “My students were mainly looking for direction to improve their techniques – we looked at fading, scissor over comb, low graduation, square layering and as some of the models also wore beards we studied beard shapes.” The evening closed with a certificate presentation by Bruno Marc where students were photographed with their mentor.

An Exclusive Appointment with Kevin Luchmun KEVIN LUCHMUN IS ONE OF THE MOST RESPECTED AND INDEMAND BARBERS IN THE UK, STYLING FOR TONI&GUY AS AN INTERNATIONAL ART DIRECTOR AT THE FLAGSHIP LONDON ACADEMY.

K

evin heads up the Men’s Course at the TONI&GUY academy London and travels the world running shows and sharing his knowledge as a highly respected educator. But where did it all begin for the man from Maidstone? BarberNV decided it was time to find out more about the talent behind the clippers. Kevin fell into barbering naturally, when trimming his own hair developed into cutting his mates’ hair too. Although self-taught, he is now an educator and fiercely believes that no-one can rest on their laurels. He told us: “It doesn’t matter how long you’ve been cutting hair for, you’re always improving and you never stop learning.” Indeed, Kevin relishes every chance he gets to travel, educating others in the art of barbering, whilst also soaking up the trends and skills on offer in far flung places around the globe. He has noticed a shift in the industry in recent years, saying: “It’s gone from strength

to strength, with a lot of up and coming talent and people that are very enthusiastic and passionate about their trade. “Barbering is very in at the moment and it’s a ‘cool’ thing to be a part of. We’re actually seeing a lot of hairdressers converting and wanting to become barbers.” Kevin added: “It’s become a culture now and I feel it is in a league of its own. I’m happy recognition within the barbering industry is happening and standards are high, with so many talented people out there.” This is, of course, fuelled by an increased thirst for fashion and style by male clients. Kevin explained: “I feel nowadays it’s all about the whole image for people, from head to toe. It’s not just about the haircut: it’s about fashion too and what’s on trend at that moment.” Social media has been key in showcasing ideas, imagery and inspiring men to be more adventurous and take pride in their looks. “A lot of people tend to get inspiration from social media, as opposed to specific men,

although the likes of David Beckham will always set trends. Other than that, top male models within the industry are a good go to for an idea of what’s going to be big.” So what does Kevin predict will be big in Autumn / Winter 2015? “It’s still short on the sides and with regards to the length on the top, it’s versatile enough to be worn off the face or on the face. I think products changed people wanting to go for more of a shinier /wet look as opposed to dry.” And speaking of products, what are the man at the top of his game’s favourites? “label.m products – there are over 80 products in the range, which all do something different depending on what you want to achieve.” Kevin has achieved incredible success so far in his career, but one of his top moments came when he was crowned 2014 Men’s Hairdresser of the Year at the British Hairdressing Awards. He described the accolade as “very unexpected but it shows that with hard work and dedication, anything is possible.”

A close shave

with Robert and Dan Rix In an industry where many look towards cutting edge styles and innovative ideas to make their barbershops more than just a pop-in-shop for a quick trim, two men have stood firm in the belief that well executed and considered cuts and shaves must remain at the heart of the art. These two are the legendary father and son barber duo, Robert and Dan Rix.

R

obert Rix is one of the most experienced barbers in the country, if not world, having worked in the industry for over fifty years. He explained: “When I started in the craft it wasn’t all about following a dream or wanting to quench some artistic thirst. It was simply a way of earning a living. I was lucky in starting my apprenticeship in the shop that was owned by the local NHF president, so right from the start I was getting tuition from a very good and dedicated teacher.” Over the years, Robert has seen a multitude of styles come and go, from teddy-boy quiffs, to Kevin Keegan perms - you would have to go a long way to find a look that hasn’t been created by his masterful fingertips. Robert told us: “Fashion always seems to come from the street and a good barber needs to be aware of fashion trends and keep right up to date with what is happening out there. One of the great advantages I have is the fact that I changed over into Ladies Hairdressing for about ten years so I saw the other side of the trade and often use a ladies technique in my work. This ability was invaluable when long hair was in fashion.” But this man is not just a master in cutting he’s also renowned in the art of Open Razor Shaving - a skill he is understandably proud of. “In addition to my hairdressing skills I am fully versed and certified in head and face massage and I am an extremely proficient exponent of the art of Open Razor Shaving; a skill that I pride myself on and would hazard a guess that there are few shaving practitioners in the country who could better my ability or match my knowledge of this unique aspect of the craft.” One who shares his father’s pride and passion in the art of shaving and step up to this mantle is Dan Rix. After a television career that spanned for sixteen years, he opted to leave the city life of London and follow in his father’s footsteps and take up hairdressing. ‘’As a partner in the business I bring my previous skills as a cameraman into everyday life, this is portrayed in the vast window displays that we have and each small sectioned is framed and constructed with purpose rather than filling a gap. Bringing a photographers eye into the business has helped the retail side and appearance of the business no end.’’

Having grown up in the barbershop environment, sweeping the floors and lathering up etc. for a penny or twopocket money at the weekend, it would be fair to say that barbering is in his blood and together Robert and Dan make quite the formidable force in ther hair and shaving world, now running the iconic The Master Barber’s Shop in Wayfarers Arcade Southport. Robert can’t however sit back and rely on past glory as Dan is snapping at the Old Man’s heels with his latest collection “Rudeboy Rock” that has received many plaudits following publication in a sheaf of trade magazines. Robert said: “At The Master Barber’s Shop we trade as “The Company of Master Barbers” (C.O.M.B) and that is exactly what we are. We take our job very seriously and always try to be professional and at the top of our game. “The shaving skills we use on a day to day basis in the shop are as old as the craft itself. We use traditional tools and techniques. There is no room for any element of creativity in shaving, it is all about technique and following a set of formulaic rules.” Indeed, Robert is firm in his belief that a strong skillset and base knowledge of traditional techniques is key to gaining and maintaining success in this industry.

Feature.

“There is no substitute for possessing a wide skill base and having top class techniques. Some of the newer members of the profession would appear to rely upon their image and flare to carry them through but unless that is backed by skill and solid knowledge of the medium that they are working with, then they will not be in the trade for the long haul,” he warned. Robert and Dan use a number of traditional tools of the trade for shaving and cutting, but Robert understandably points out that ultimately his “fingers are his fortune”, although, he confidently added: “ I could cut

hair with a bit of broken glass and still do a great job!” When it comes to products, he said: “Currently we doing a lot with Layrite, Monsterhold, Uppercut Deluxe and Dapper Dan but we also use our range of own label products in the shop. When I first started in the craft part of my job was mixing, bottling and labelling jars of hair cream and setting lotions so again it’s something the harks right back to my earliest days in the craft.” So, as well as an in incredible cut or shave at The Master Barber Shop, what else can

“The shaving skills we use on a day to day basis in the shop are as old as the craft itself. We use traditional tools and techniques. There is no room for any element of creativity in shaving, it is all about technique and following a set of formulaic rules.”

one expect when you step into Robert and Dan’s hair haven? “We have a well fitted shop that is bright and well decorated but it not an artificial construct. Everything has a function and purpose. Some barber shops these days are trying too hard to be an imitation of something that probably never existed where it’s all about style and being trendy. The Master Barber’s Shop is not like that, although it has a very distinctive look and is easily recognisable.” And The Master Barber’s Shop couldn’t be busier, with more men than ever spending time on their beards and hair. Robert told us: “Male grooming is booming and we are working at capacity; we could not be any busier if we tried. We are not however part of the battle that is taking place at the bottom end of the market distance ourselves as far from that as possible.” Robert and Dan have an astounding amount of accolades and titles under their belts but recently, Robert was given the acclaimed title of Grand Master Barber and Dan was awarded Master Barber status by The British Master Barbers Alliance.. “Grand Master status is something that I have only recently been accorded; having received the award at the recent Barber Connect convention held in Wales. I have been a registered Master Craftsman in Ladies Hairdressing for quite some time and then gained the dual status as Master Craftsman Barber a couple of years ago. Both Dan and I are State Regisitered and I am a member of the Barber Council and a strong advocate of mandatory registration for all members of the profession.” With such vast experience of hairdressing and shaving, the pair are keen to share their knowledge and skills with others in the industry. They went down a storm at the inaugural Barber Bash in Southport and will be delivering information on their shaving courses at others going forward, including the first Scottish Bash in Glasgow at the end of July. Robert said: “Dan and I will be very glad to meet up with your readers and chat with them about any aspect of the craft. I assume that we will be overnighting in Scotland so if any of your readers want to ply us with strong drink to try and get some jewel of barbering information from us, both Dan and I will be willing to assist in any way we can!” For now though, from a man we could listen to and learn from for hours on end without batting an eyelid, we asked Robert to sum up his advice for barber success: “Work hard, listen to everyone as someone may know a little more than you, treat your clients with respect and civility and wear comfortable shoes.” With over 50 years experience, these are words we will heed, Grand Master. UNDERSTANDING SCISSORS #1: MAINTENANCE AND WHY THIS SHOULD BE IN YOUR DAILY ROUTINE Every stylist owns at least one pair of scissors, so it makes sense to get the most from yours by understanding them, knowing what to look for when buying them, and how to maintain them. This series will give you this information. Firstly, we look at the steps we can all take to show our scissors some TLC. We asked Spencer Dudman, from Spencer Scissors, a well-regarded industry expert, for his top tips for getting the most out of this essential piece of every stylist’s kit.

Buy proper scissor oil and use this every day on your scissors. This is tremendously important for the longevity and performance of your scissors, and is an inexpensive must-have. It protects your scissors from corrosion and rust, and ensures the smooth running of the central mechanism. Scissor oil works differently to the machine oil often used with clippers – if this is used on scissors, it acts to drive hair etc. into the centre screw instead of away from it, clogging up and eventually damaging the mechanism that should keep the cutting action effortless.

Tensioning Scissors are precisely crafted instruments and this is how they should be treated. The correct tension is vitally important, yet many stylists have been taught to think that this is a matter of personal preference and often run their scissors too loose. This is bad for scissors, the stylist and the client’s hair. Check the tension of your scissors throughout the day, by following these simple steps:

Falling even halfway means the tension is too loose – this will damage the cutting edge of the scissors by forcing the stylist to apply pressure to bring the blades together (pressure cutting). Adjust the tension if necessary, and repeat the above steps until perfect tension is achieved.

Cleaning It goes without saying that scissors should be cleaned after every haircut - wet hair and products are not good for scissors and can lead to the life expectancy of your scissors being cut short by corrosion. Rust and other forms of corrosion literally eat into your scissors, and this is irreversible. A good service will take the blade edge back to the remaining undamaged metal, but if the corrosion is extensive, this may mean that the length is reduced. Prevention is definitely better than cure!

Hold the scissor vertically by the thumb loop and lift the finger loop to a horizontal position Let go of the finger loop and jiggle slightly The finger handle should only fall a small way

Feature. Chamois leather or alternative Use an old piece for wiping blades clean of hair etc. Doubling or tripling the piece of cloth, fold over the cutting edge of the blade and with some downward pressure very carefully wipe along the length of each blade in turn. Please be very careful not to place your hand or fingers over the cutting edge, even with the cloth as nasty cuts can happen. This is really worthwhile to do as often as you can – ideally after every haircut, as this helps to keep the scissors sharper for longer by pushing any burrs created by cutting (and especially pressure cutting) away from the edge.

The importance of a regular, thorough service cannot be over emphasised. I am often asked whether there’s a difference between sharpening and servicing. The truth is there is a massive difference: as a master bladesmith, the professional service I offer is a complete remanufacturing and sharpening is just one of the seven key stages done to return your scissors to the way they felt often better than new if they were out of sett to start with! How often you get your scissors serviced depends on the amount of haircuts you do, whether you pressurecut and the metal and manner of manufacture. A good grade steel will hold an edge for longer and drop forged scissors will last longer than cast ones. Regular servicing can stop potential long-term damage to scissors by highlighting problems, for example lack of oil leading to the start of corrosion, and correct them with very minimal amount of metal being taken off. Scissors that have been dropped should be serviced right away. Dropping (or throwing scissors down on a counter etc.) frequently causes nicks along the blade, which if left untreated cause further damage to the blade and serious damage to your clients’ hair, which in turn could hurt your bottom- line as nicks catch and pull hair, making for an unpleasant cutting experience.

Take Care of ‘Yoi’ Scissors Colin Simpson and Yoi Scissors have been selling and sharpening scissors for nearly forty years. Colin gives our Barber NV readers a few tips in keeping your scissors clean and sharp. Always keep your scissors in a pouch or case with separate scissor protection slots and oil with the Kasho or Sakura oil pen. After oiling, wipe with a leather Kasho scissor cloth to maintain your scissors’ shine. Not only is it essential to ensure scissors are clean but they have to be kept sharpened. Do not use door to door sharpeners as they tend to be poor quality, so look for a sharpening company or ask friends and barbers who they recommend, to make sure you get the best in sharpening. Yoi

Scissors will visit your barbershop in Scotland and Manchester and are highly recommended by top barber, such as Rebel Rebel. Today’s modern cutting techniques need the edges to be perfect at all times to ensure they don’t catch or pull when slicing or point cutting. When choosing a scissor, Yoi scissors ideally come to your barbershop and let you choose from our selection or online. The most popular and best seeking top end £150 -£1000 scissors are Kasho, Kamisoriand wings 5 inch. Yoi Chopper best seller comes in all sizes as well as Yasaka scissors. So, always maintain your scissors as it is vital to keep them clean and sharp to give clients the best cut.

“Scissors that have been dropped should be serviced right away. Dropping (or throwing scissors down on a counter etc.) frequently causes nicks along the blade, which if left untreated cause further damage to the blade and serious damage to your clients’ hair” Even if the scissors have escaped obvious metal damage, very often stylists notice that they do not feel the same and their cutting becomes more laboured. This is caused by the scissors no longer being in sett. During every service the sett is checked and corrected as necessary. All of the above are essential to maintain scissors at their best, and save money as well: sharp scissors enable quicker cutting with greater accuracy, and reduce the risk of Repetitive Strain Injuries (RSI). Your relationship with your scissors is like any other relationship: if you are well suited and time and effort are put into maintaining them they should last the distance… If you have any questions, please get in touch – always happy to help talented barbers show their scissors some love!

For further information and a demonstration, please see my scissor maintenance video on YouTube, under Spencer Scissors, and for further information please contact me via www.spencerscissors.co.uk or call 07817 082 754.

Beard NV

#THEMANCLUB SAM MARTIN APOTHECARY87

Tell us how you got started in the industry? What was your inspiration? I have spent the last decade of my life working at the top of my industry as a bartender/event organiser. However, when I started my own bar company, I found that nobody took me seriously because I looked so young; it was at this point I decided to grow a beard. People did take me more seriously, so I decided to keep it. Anyone who grows a beard will understand that it doesn’t take too long before you realise it needs looking after and conditioning, so I spent many moons researching the best ingredients to make a beard oil that was my own. Having tried many brands out there, one of the major problems was that I found a lot of them to be girly smelling and being a man, I decided my beard oil should smell like that of a MAN’s beard oil. It didn’t take long for my friends to start requesting me to make them some and on top of this I had seemed to grow a bearded following on several social networks, all asking what products I used and how I maintained my beard. Since everyone seemed to be asking to get hold of my oil, I thought I would look into making it on a production level. My Granddad was a major inspiration in my life. He was clever, funny and above all, a strong, determined character. As I was putting this new venture into motion (and still thinking of a name), he passed away from Prostate Cancer. It was at the end of September ’13 and I decided to honour this great man’s memory by using something of his in my company name. He was 87 when he died and as I was born in ’87. It was undeniably a sign. Mixed with my love of all things vintage and the theme of mixing my own beard tonic, Apothecary 87 was born. What separates your products from your competitors? We pride ourselves on producing top quality products with a unique innovative and imaginative approach. Having all our limited edition oils last year is a perfect example of this. We know lots of people would like us to bring back past fragrances but being ‘Limited’ was part of the exciting, unique experience. I also have a great creative team working with me. You only have to look at the amazing cover photo to see what a stunning photographer Liam Oakes is. We have even built him a brilliant photo studio. Tell us about the #THEMANCLUB It all started with the social media following. I thought it was a great way for MEN to show solidarity and to make Apothecary 87 a brand to be proud to belong to. Besides, the business of being a MAN in today’s world should be fun as well. Anyone who buys a product of ours, automatically gets entry to The Man Club. There is a membership card inside every one of our products and on the back it has a space for sticking on a small passport size photo for the member to use. There are different style cards and we have found lots of our customers and supporters love trying to collect the different ones. But it is not about the card. Club membership is about belonging; about using Instagram, Twitter and

Are you working on any new products just now for the beard fanatics out there?

“What is a well groomed MAN?” Our answer,”A well groomed MAN is not merely a MAN who uses great products on his hair and body but a MAN who can present himself in his own desired way, through all aspects of his lifestyle.”

Where do you see yourself and your business in 5 years time?

So, with this in our MAN minds, we have taken measures to help our fellow MEN achieve this.

We are always working on new products, not just for beards. And at the moment we have three immediate new products due for release and two more later on in the year. That’s all I am saying at the moment. It’s all very top secret!!!

That’s easy, I would like to be selling to every country in the world. So far, we have sold to over 95 countries in the world. We are opening up a flagship store in LA and will be expanding to other parts of the USA and here in the UK too.

uite a title but what does it mean? Kevin shares his experience and advice with the barber industry in regards to customer service, retailing, business profitability and more – he’s proved to be an invaluable source of knowledge of the industry to many. One of the key things Kevin has noted within the barbershop world is that in recent years, “there has been a real need for change.” He explained: “Just look at the high street, take growth for example; Primark/ Homebargains, and expanding designer brands are performing well – with the middle market struggling. “Similarly, in barbering the same market trend is taking place – you have small barber shops targeting a huge market at the cheaper end. The biggest change in recent times is what I call “the designer barbers”. These are the businesses who are marketing themselves as a growing designer brand, offering slicker/cooler service and a must for the guy who wants to be pampered.” So what would Kevin’s advice be for Barber NV readers starting out or looking to improve business in their barber shops? “Look the part, be sharp, ensure your skills are up to speed, i.e. invest in training. That said; clients will expect a great hair cut wherever they go.” He continued: “Image: footfall/bums on seats, very important as first impressions count. Dispose of outdated pictures hanging in the window. “Ensure you have a clean, smart exterior/interior and showcase a range of grooming products. Doesn’t need to be a large range but make sure it is one which suits your salon. “Look the part, if you want to attract slick trendy customers, then you need to lead by example! This runs across all aspects of the business, especially staff presentation.”

As The Customer Service Guru, what should we be doing when it comes to customer service? “Consultation is such an important part of the experience. I still hear hairdressers and barbers asking customers “So what are we doing today?” or words to that effect. Try saying “do you have any ideas or are you open to suggestions”, as then most customers will say “what would you do?” Now you can recommend not just a haircut, but other services too.” This can be important for upselling, as Kevin pointed out: “Tell customers how to get that look, not just how to style it but what type of products they need to achieve it as if you need a grooming product to achieve a look as their barber, your clients need it more, as they don’t have your skills.” While many barber shops are diversifying into other areas, featuring clothing ranges, coffee shops and more, Kevin said “this is not necessarily for everyone.” “If you have the space and it works for you, that’s great, but if you are going down this route, do your homework and get your merchandising right. I know some shops that have done this on their own and some that have tied up with a local clothes shop as a partnership on this side.” Finally, what key things do barbers need to provide/ offer for their customers? • A clean and comfortable environment • A professional approach • A great haircut!

• A full range of services to suit your customer’s needs. • Positive advice

• Do not take customers for granted big mistake - always offer new ideas, as if you don’t, someone else will!

HOW TO ESTABLISH A RETAIL AREA IN YOUR BARBER SHOP LIZ McKEON, HAIR & BEAUTY BUSINESS EXPERT

LIZ McKEON IS A SUCCESSFUL AUTHOR, KEY NOTE SPEAKER, BUSINESS COACH AND TRAINER, SPECIALISING IN THE HAIR, BEAUTY & SPA SECTOR. REGARDLESS OF SPACE, A WELL-STOCKED RETAIL AREA WILL STRENGTHEN YOUR IDENTITY.

It creates awareness of your products and begins to help plant a seed that can develop a desire to buy.

T

here is unlimited potential to increase turnover and improve cash-flow within the business by focusing on and increasing retail sales. This sales process will have a positive impact on figures, increasing both overall turnover and staff commission. However, the approach to display and merchandising of retail products can be quite poor and sometimes overlooked in Barber Shops. You have so much technical knowledge, why lose sales to local retail outlets, such as pharmacies and supermarkets, just because you haven’t given enough thought and attention to effective merchandising? Merchandising refers to how products are categorised and grouped together to enhance them and encourage customers to buy. Effective merchandising views selling from the customer’s point of view, and since a huge percentage of purchases are made on impulse, merchandising strives to make purchasing products as easy as possible for the customers, while increasing profits for the business. Stock Levels:

• Revise and re-examine all your stock levels

• Make sure you have your best sellers in stock

• If you are out of stock of an item, communicate this to all staff, so they don’t recommend a product you don’t have in stock at the time. • Place regular small orders until you have your stock levels correct.

• Make sure you have enough, but don’t tie money up in stock that isn’t selling. The merchandising process must contain these 3 elements: Products: according to your market, are the right product types and brands present in the point of purchase display? Position: location – are the products placed in the ideal location in the client traffic flow? Are products in the right section, in order with market leaders, and in order of package size? Are the products rotated to keep stock up to date? Presentation: pricing – are the products clearly priced? Do you use point of sale materials strategically? Are the products and shelving clean and attractively displayed? Next, to Increase Your Sales:

• Know your stock inside out, such as stock in hand, available delivery times and advertising schedules and promotions.

• Create an atmosphere that your Barber Shop is having the biggest event ever! Look busy and successful. Make sure to display any awards, mementos, photos and testimonials that allow clients to see the true professionals they are dealing with. • Remain upbeat and positive – the confident atmosphere with which you carry yourself will go a long way towards creating the buying ambience.

• Know your competition and all their strengths and weaknesses. Know your brands and all the corresponding product information. When you know more than anyone else, there is really no need for a customer to go elsewhere. • Having confidence in your product line will allow you to make higher sales. • Get to know your customers and how to relate to them.

• Be prepared with price lists, costs and product information. • Always use confident and friendly body language.

And, if it’s not happening quickly enough for you, here are the w most common mistakes retail sales people make: 1.

Failing to build rapport with the customer.

3.

Focusing on their own agenda, instead of the customer.

2. 4. 5.

6. 7.

8. 9.

Failing to find out the customer’s requirements. Not giving the customer adequate time.

Not listening or hearing what the customer is saying.

Not knowing about promotions, specials and regular pricing.

No differentiating the brand enough to create additional value in the customer’s mind. Selling too fast, trying to close before the customer is ready to buy.

Failing to address objections properly, not realising that satisfactory resolution of any queries is the shortest distance to purchase.

10. Not taking advantage of add-on sales, as soon as the main purchase is done, which is when the client is ready to entertain them.

Question: If every customer in your shop bought one retail item this week, how much would that add to your bottom line? Now multiply that figure by 52 weeks?....... Would that enhance your profitability?

BRAND EXPOSURE: REACHING YOUR TARGET MARKET AND INCREASING FOOTFALL TO YOUR BARBER SHOP Salon Evolution Director, Steven Gunnip, shares his insight on the best ways for a barbershop to reach its target market and increase client footfall

M

en’s grooming is most definitely booming and with the increasing influence of celebrities and the catwalk, men are now much more likely to ask for a bespoke cut that aligns with their personal style, rather than adhering to the somewhat ‘one size fits all’ policy of years gone by. With such a growing market, it makes sense to ensure you capture your male clients’ attention in the right way, to ensure they visit you over your competitors. While a barbershop is typically known for shorter, more traditional haircuts and shaving services, many hairdressing salons now provide a range of male haircare options. For a barbershop to position itself as a leader in its field, it should consider expanding its offerings to incorporate a menu of additional grooming and haircare services, such as colour, drastic hairstyle changes, longer male styles and trend-led looks. After all, the more there is on offer, the wider your potential client base is going to be. Having said this, make sure that you are well prepared before making any service menu adjustments or introductions and have the staff, resources and training to support them. Ensure you are clear about what you want to offer and where your specialities will lie, so that you have a distinct brand identity. If you’re not sure which areas you want to focus on, this will no doubt be confusing to your target market too. All of the services you offer should be the best they can be; if you have a reputation for providing outstanding traditional men’s haircuts and shaving services, this needs to carry over into any new services you provide too. Even if you decide to stick with traditional barbershop offerings, this doesn’t mean that the service you provide should be any different to a hair salon; in fact, giving great customer service will be your biggest asset in retaining a loyal client base. Consultations and product recommendations are also

some of the strongest tools that salons have and can therefore be translated to barbershops too. Consultations ensure that a client will receive what they ask for and are happy with the end result, and recommending products will increase each individual client bill. Your clients will also appreciate being steered in the right direction by someone knowledgeable who understands their hair type and texture and knows how to recreate their style. Once you have an established service menu and know what your specialist areas are, be sure to shout about them at every opportunity. Maximise all avenues that are available to you; use key social media sites to engage with your clients, clearly detail the complete service list on your website so that potential clients can easily find what they are looking for, use local and industry listings to promote your business, and ensure that all of your offerings are detailed on price lists, leaflets and promotional material. If people don’t know about a particular service, they can’t book an appointment for it. Be sure to mention any business achievements too – do you offer something different to other barbers in the vicinity, or have you won a local award for your services?

If so, let your target market know. Get involved in activities within the local community or see if you can partner with other independent organisations in the area, such as men’s fashion stores, to reach a new client base that will be receptive to your offerings. People talk and word-of-mouth advertising is one of the strongest and most powerful ways of exposing and promoting your barbershop. Male clients rely on the recommendation of others above all else when choosing which establishment to visit. Social media has taken this and magnified it, meaning that word-of-mouth extends beyond a conversation between friends, but gives people the power to reach thousands with their views. With this in mind, incentivise satisfied clients to go online and write a review about their experience by offering them a discount on their next appointment if they share their views online or if you receive a booking based on their recommendation. While external promotion is clearly an important part of expanding your potential pool of clients, one of your best marketing tools is actually the very service that you provide. People like to spend time in a fun, yet relaxed, environment, yet many men see a haircut as a necessity or even a chore, so focus on making a visit to your barbershop a positive experience that they actually look forward to. You can have the best promotional materials in the world, but it is the experience they have that will speak the loudest volumes in terms of whether they will re-visit and spend their hard-earned money once again. Whether you’re in the planning stages of a new barber shop venture, or have been trading for years, the key to reaching your target market and increasing footfall to your establishment is in creating your own unique selling point and salon identity, and capitalising on this at every opportunity, so you reap the rewards from your offerings.

ONLINE BOOKING WEBSITES FOR BARBERS

n 2011 Matthew Harrison, known as ‘The Village Barber’ to the local residents of Davenham was struggling to keep his single chair shop open after the recession. Like many barbers, he had queues running out of the door at peak times and had to turn away business on a Saturday but he was finding it difficult to attract customers during the rest of the week. Through a chance conversation while cutting local student Will Bell’s hair, Matt commissioned Will to build an online appointment booking website for his shop - knowing that he would be forced to close by the end of the year. After the website’s launch, hundreds of customers (new and old) signed up to pre-book their haircut online, keen to avoid long queues elsewhere. Presented with flexibility about when they got their haircut, customers started booking more appointments during quieter days: this reduced demand on peak days and increased capacity for Matt. “I went to bed quiet and woke up with a busy day ahead with people having booked in during the evening” Matt said. For the first time since he opened his shop,

Matt was able to take a family holiday without upsetting his customers, as they knew when he was away and could book around his time off. He says, “I was worried that people just wouldn’t show up to their appointments but because it’s so easy for them to cancel online the appointment can be quickly booked up again by someone else meaning I don’t lose business!” With more customers than ever before, Matt opened up a second chair to deal with the demand. Building on their successful experience, Matt and Will continue to refine the website to deliver a simple and effective experience for both the customer and the barber. They have now launched the software NEARCUT, giving barbers just like Matt an online appointment booking website to manage their time and maximise their business. “We’re so confident that barbers will love having their own customised website running NEARCUT that barbers can try it out for three months without any commitment,” Matt said. Larry the Barber Man.

The Man Behind Savills Barbers, Reveals His Hair Clippers Of Choice

Joth Davies interview with Larry the Barber Man

T

hose of you who follow barbering shows such as the recent Barber Connect exhibition will be very familiar with the name Savills Barbers, as they’ve just scooped up the prize for best barbershop – just one of a dazzling number of awards that the shop and its barbers have claimed as their own. I have been a long-time admirer of the barber behind the brand, Joth Davies, so this month I decided it was about time I picked his brain about the best clippers and shared his wisdom with other barbers who could benefit from it! Joth’s original training was as a hairdresser, the only option available 27 years ago when he first started learning the craft, however like many barbering converts he never quite gelled with the salon environment and found that he simply wasn’t a fan of cutting women’s hair. The switch to barbering may have required a lot of additional training, much of which was done on his own time with his friends to use as makeshift models, however it was certainly worth it: now he’s one of the most popular and well-decorated barbers in the country. Savills in Sheffield stands as a tribute to his great love of the vintage aesthetic – no feature of the shop has been neglected, so as soon as you step through the door you are hit with a stunning display of both style and substance. For me personally, the glittering light fixings are the real stars, lending a warm glow to the entire room which really does justice to the talents of Joth and his professional troupe. From the classic gangster movies that Joth found his inspiration in growing up, to the legendary Savile Row – a true high point of men’s style – Savills pays homage to the classic and the timeless, and in doing so has become a champion of those same values. With such a love for vintage styling, Joth has been lucky to see the sharp and sophisticated hair styles of the 1920s and 40s come back into fashion, as men increasingly turn to the

36 | BARBERNV MAGAZINE

traditional when they want to stay on trend. With such passion and skill, the barbers at Savills have also been called upon to style stars as they take to stage at local Sheffield theatres, for productions such as The Crucible’s Hamlet starring John Simm. But it isn’t all about giving the best haircuts; it’s also about training up the next generation of barbers so that barbering’s legacy is not lost, and this is where Joth really comes into his own. Savill’s Academy has been born out of an increasing demand from barbers to learn the traditional styles and values that Joth has rightly come to represent. This training service is now one of the most sought-after in the country, and allows people to learn in small groups which offer the intimacy to really get to grips with the skills that are being passed along. Rather than giving a broad but shallow overview of barbering to his students, Joth zeroes in on specific skills – courses in clipper confidence and shaving specialism allow barbers

who have already developed many skills of their own, or hairdressers making the move into barbering, to develop into specialists. Likewise, his master barber course is one of the few to cater to barbers who already would consider themselves highly experienced, and want to take things to the ultimate level. For those of you who weren’t already familiar with Joth, it’s probably becoming clear just how strong his claim to barbering expertise really is! I certainly can’t think of anybody I’d rather listen to when it comes to clipper selection, so without further ado here is Joth’s run down of the ultimate clippers – I’ve asked him to select three clippers, each representing one of the three different motors available – magnetic motors, which work with moving arms and are the most generally used, these are fast and efficient, but also the weakest ; pivot motors, which are smooth and quiet but also powerful; and rotary motors, which are the strongest option, perfect for when you really need to take down some hair!

Why the Oster 97?

This is a bad ass, robust clipper which is perfect for heavy duty clipper over comb, and it glides through thick hair like a hot knife through butter…

Joth’s Pivot Motor Clipper of Choice Oster Fast Feed What’s the Oster Fast Feed all about?

The Oster Fast Feed is a very recent addition to my extensive clipper collection. With a pivot motor, I find that this a great tool if you want more control – you can get less aggressive fades and softer tapers. This makes them ideal for the classic cuts that I specialise in, and they are a very good clipper if you aim for a vintage aesthetic in your own work. Although this can be a good tool for clipper over comb work as well, it doesn’t quite have the power that you find with a rotary motor, so it’s better as part of a larger clipper collection. Let’s get down to the details – what makes the Oster Fast Feed different?

Joth’s Magnetic Motor of Choice Wahl Senior /Super Taper What’s the Wahl Senior/ Super Taper all about?

The Wahl Super Taper is an incredible clipper which I’ve been using for 27 years, and it’s been one of my all-time favourite clippers for everyday use. It’s a fantastic tool for anybody looking for something that can handle every job: I’ve used it for fading, tapering, clipper over comb and guard work without ever having a problem. Recently I purchased the Wahl Senior, and it’s basically the Super Taper on steroids – a very similar clipper, but with a much heavier weight and a flatter, finer tooth. Personally I’ve found the Wahl Senior absolutely brilliant for blending zero/bald fades. Let’s get down to the details – what makes the Wahl Senior/Super Taper different?

The Wahl Senior and Wahl Super Taper use a magnetic motor, but unlike other magnetic motor clippers it really is a reliable and hard-working tool. Some magnetic clippers suffer from a lack of power, but the Senior and the Super Taper manage to get the job done with fantastic results! Why these Wahl Clippers?

This was the first clipper I ever picked up and I’m sure it will be the last I ever put down – a loyal friend for any barber.

Joth’s Rotary Motored Clipper of Choice Oster 97 What’s the Oster 97 all about? The Oster 97 is a clipper that I’ve been using for around 15-20 years now, after first being introduced to it when I started working as an educator for American Crew – they use this clipper because their method specifies that no guards should be used. I have found it perfect for clipper over comb work and it is especially valuable when doing long to short restyles; I also particularly like the interchangeable metal guards which can be used with it. The 0.4mm option is a really great tool for bald fades, however I would say that if you’re looking for an everyday clipper you’re better off with the magnetic motor options mentioned above – the Oster 97 can become a little too heavy and clunky when using it with the guards, and therefore is not as fluid as a magnetic clipper.

The Oster Fast Feed’s pivot motor means that the blades move slower, and that’s what gives you the control that I’ve just been talking about. Slower than a magnetic motor but easier to handle than a rotary motor, pivot clippers strike a good balance between the two. Why the Oster Fast Feed?

This is a great pick because it’s small, light and easy to use - a good all round clipper. When it comes to equipment, it seems that Joth agrees with many other British barbers – sometimes to get the best quality out of your equipment it’s great to mix and match with some clippers from the States! In the past this has made the job of barbering in the UK far more difficult than it needed to be, as several of the clippers listed above simply wouldn’t have been available if you weren’t barbering in America. Now, with my Frequency60hz Converter these problems have found a lasting solution – after developing this converter to help power US clippers in other countries, I have been amazed by just how many British barbers have told me it is changing the way they cut hair!

Let’s get down to the details – what makes the Oster 97 different?

Similar to the classic and timeless Oster 76, but running a little quieter and a little cooler, the Oster 97 operates using a rotary motor which makes it an extremely powerful clipper – especially handy if you need to get rid of a lot of hair very quickly, or if you’re working with thick hair or wet hair.

To talk to me about the Frequency60Hz converter, or any of the other information I’ve discussed today, please feel free to visit my website www.larrythebarberman.com or email me at info@larrythebarberman.com. I am always looking for the excuse to get to know more brilliant barbers, so come and say hi on Instagram or Facebook – just search for Larry the Barber Man to become part of my community of barbers and barbering fans.

Cut from the same cloth:

Cutthroatpete combines barbering with fashion K

nown as Cutthroatpete, the talented barber has combined his love of the industry with his creative passion and come up with a brand that not only offers haircuts but one which also encompasses fashion and hair products he has put his heart and soul into creating. It’s a model an increasing number of shops are following and we were keen to find out more about how it has been working for Pete. He told us: “I opened Cutthroatpete’s on June 11 last year. “It’s a great place, I feel so relaxed there and my customers are always saying the same. “People love the fact that it’s a one chair shop. It’s a big space (1000sqft) and I have made good use of all of it. “It feels like a man cave/studio where people can relax, have a drink and catch up. It’s filled with things that represent me and my brand in some way or another. Everything, right down to the smell of the place is important to me. I want people to feel at home here.” Situated in the heart of Liverpool, Cutthroatpete admitted he has notice a rise in the number of barber shops over the past few years, with a barbers on almost every street in the city. He said: “The shops all have their unique thing going on, although some have obviously taken a lot of inspiration from others.” From being a barber, to adding in a clothing line, Pete explained: “My clothing is something that I’ve wanted to do for ages. It was an idea I had but it took me a good while to actually put things in motion. “I wanted to find a great designer that could work on the same wavelength as me and help design my logo. Obviously this is something

40 | BARBERNV MAGAZINE

that will stay with the brand forever and I wanted to make sure it was perfect. “Robbie my designer did an amazing job of it and I am proud to see people wearing it. I would love to have some more time to work on my clothing, as I have so many more ideas for new pieces. Hopefully this will be something I can do in the future.” You can get the full clothing range and products in Cutthroatpete’s barber shop and he has taken the design of the interior just as serious as the design of his clothes. “I have my clothing displayed on some scaffold shelving that I designed. It’s great having people from all over the world buying my clothing online but it’s really exciting when people visiting Liverpool pop in to the shop to grab some of my Cutthroatpete pieces.” With the retail side playing an increasingly important role in salons and barber shops; as well as his Cutthroatpete products, Pete said: “I also stock some independent companies like beard products by ‘The Bearded Bastard’ from Texas, USA and ‘Pappa’s from Utrecht, Holland. I also sell other grooming essentials, brushes, combs etc.” “I display some art work by a customer of mine, David Cain, as his art is really cool. My customers love it and a good few have contacted him and commissioned pieces. I am always happy to speak to other independent labels and brands about stocking some limited pieces from their collections.” A way of adding profit and attracting a wider variety of customers, developing the retails side along with core barber services can be a perfect way to increase turnover.

Ensuring your customer is at the heart of all you do is also, obviously, vital. Pete said: “Everybody that is a customer of my shop gets a VIP service. They have their time in my chair with no distractions. They can talk about whatever they like, put on whatever music they want to listen to and have a cold beer or a freshly brewed coffee. “I have built up a vision in my head over my time in this trade and my shop is a compilation of my ideas. “I am a one chair, appointment-only barber shop so I do have to close my appointment book to new customers, this causes mixed reactions from people but it really works. My customers are loyal, great people so I give them a VIP treatment.

Cutthroatpete has seen the barber industry evolve, with social media playing an important role. He said: “The good thing is social networking. It has brought barbers closer together and taught people to respect each other’s work. I speak to people that I’ve never met face to face but we regularly talk about barbering and our industry. People can learn from each other either through instagram or YouTube. “My best mate Miguel ‘The Nomad Barber’ has used YouTube really well to showcase his Barber trip. There are endless amounts of tutorials on there too which are great for people wanting to learn something new. “Our trade will continue to evolve as long as new sources of media evolve. I have noticed Periscope is becoming an increasingly popular social app to use withinb. This is really exciting as it is just another platform for people to showcase their skills.” Pete continued: “I like to look at @Barbershopconnect on Instagram, they post some really nice work from Barbers around the world. “I use a lot of fashion referencing for my inspiration and I follow some great fashion bloggers and photographers. Street style fashion photography is a great way to find some cool references. Nick Wooster is a massive inspiration for me, he is definitely one of the coolest men on the planet. He dresses so well and always looks really well groomed. I would love to cut his hair one day.” Speaking of cutting… Cutthroatpete may conjure up images of dangerous razors but this highly skilled barber has one go-to tool which he believes trumps them all – “I use all Wahl tools, I have only ever used Wahl. I have tried others but they have never felt right.” Cutthroatpete cites the likes of David Beckham as helping the barber industry boom, with men in the public eye making it more acceptable for lads to take care of themselves. He also thinks Wayne Rooney has had a massively positive effect on encouraging men to have hair transplants without being ashamed about it. So with the industry constantly growing and evolving, what’s next for Cutthroatpete? “I have some great ideas for my clothing and some big things coming up with my hair products and I am enjoying watching the industry grow.”

Hard Grind AS BARBER SHOPS GO, THEY DON’T COME MUCH MORE INVITING AND INVENTIVE THAN HARD GRIND, THAT’S WHY WE’RE MAKING THE STORE OUR VERY FIRST BARBER SHOP OF THE MONTH. Hard Grind was founded by Dundee entrepreneur Colin Petrie, who opened his first Barber shop in Dundee in November 2014. Far from the idea that guys just like to nip in and out for a short back and sides, Colin saw a gap in the market for more of an experience as the male grooming industry boomed. Now the Hard Grind stores are destinations for not only the latest hairstyle or beard trim, but also somewhere where you can pick up a T shirt whilst sipping on a coffee awaiting the chop (so to speak). So where did this all begin for Colin? He said: “I actually used to play music professionally in my late teens / early twenties and while on tour or away from home, I found myself constantly styling the bands hair or other people on the road. “One day my guitarist needed a cut as well as styling so I grabbed some orange, plastic handled kitchen scissors and just visually started cutting what seemed to be lying wrong. It actually looked ok and I found myself really enjoying the artistic, creative side to it so I bought some proper tools and started cutting friends and family and self training myself.” Colin decided to take his love of cutting one step further, by teaming up with friend Richard Davies (of noted label Abandon Ship) and creating Hard Grind. He explained: “Rich had a goal to open a new coffee bar and I was looking to open a new barber shop and clothing store so we sat down together one day and infused all our plans and ideas together and created Hard Grind. “Although we’ve only been a company for 8 months we already have our flagship store in Dundee, our own apparel range and grooming products, a coffee bar and a brand new Aberdeen store. It’s been a

42 | BARBERNV MAGAZINE

whirlwind eight months that’s for sure and it’s only the beginning for us. “ Put simply, Hard Grind just looks like somewhere you want to hang out. “The style is very personal to us. The jukebox actually came from my living room at home. The walls are filled with art from my personal collection, all of which are things that inspire us. From music and street art to skateboarding and the tattoo culture. It’s definitely a reflection of our lifestyle and passions. We get many people walking past that stop by just to look at the store and take it all in. It certainly has the “wow” factor and helped attract new customers.” While the coffee shop and clothing line may add another element to Hard Grind, the barber side is key and the Hard Grind team truly are at the cutting edge in their field. Right now, they are masters of the “skin fades”. Colin said: “Some clients prefer textured and choppy on top and others more slicked back or pomped but the side and backs are usually right down to the bone for a lot of people.” On the tools of his trade, Colin told BarberNV: “I really love the Layrite Grooming Spray right now. Adding to damp hair before the blow dry is amazing for shaping prior to adding product. “My Andis Masters are definitely my weapon of choice just now. They are great for fading and with the amount of skin fades we do, I rarely use anything else to do these styles. Teamed up with my Andis clipper comb I only really use a 1/2 guard to create most my cuts.” With men more style conscious than ever, Colin believes the demand for barber shops is going to continue to grow. “I definitely don’t think it has hit its peak just yet. We are constantly asked about training courses and apprenticeships and see young guys and girls looking to get into the industry every day. Everything rises and

BarbershopNV.

dips and comes back around but I think the hype and attraction is still on the incline right now for sure.” Keen to ensure he is very much in the game when it comes to sharing his knowledge and passion for the industry, Colin and his Hard Grind team will be at Glasgow’s Barber Bash on Sunday July 26, at The Drygate. “Every day is a school day and we are constantly learning and being inspired by one another and events like the Barber Bash are the perfect way to do that and keep us all pushing.” He also believes that it’s important that barbers build relationships, although admits there will always be “haters.” “Every trade and profession has that. It’s just life, but there is a fantastic network of barbers who are constantly helping, complimenting and praising work and progress. That’s what it’s all about. We are all in it for the love and passion. We share anything and everything we’ve been lucky enough to learn, constantly pushing each other. If you strip the hype of barbering away right now, at the end of the day, we are all just cutting hair. You have to stay humble or it’s just a waste.” So what is going to keep Hard Grind a-head (sorry Colin) of the rest? “HG is an all round experience. It’s so much more than just a hair cut. We pride ourselves on exceptional customer service no matter what walk of life you lead. It’s a great spot to just relax with a coffee or smoothie from the bar and enjoy the wifi and music from the jukebox. “You can browse the clothing and wide range of books and art, enjoy the table football and Playstation all while waiting for your cut. We love what we do and who we do it with. We are like a family and bend over backwards for our staff and our customers. Without those guys we are nothing.” Never mind BarberNV – we have Hard GrindNV! Congratulations Colin.

BarberNV Alan Beak

BarberNV’s first barber of the month needs little introduction; Alan Beak is currently one of the UK’s hottest barbers.

A

lan’s foray into the barbering world began at the age of twelve, then from there he worked hard, learned new skills and is now recognised as one of the best barbers in the industry. “I used to think then, I’ll either be a barber or a vet,” he said. We’re glad he opted for the human kind of care1 Alan and his younger brother, Reece, opened Ruger Barber only eight months ago and already the shop is booming with clients wanting their hair cut by the finest barbers in town.

44 | BARBERNV MAGAZINE

Like all siblings, Alan and Reece have their heated moments but they don’t stay mad at each other for long. Alan speaks very highly of his brother and what he brings to their shop, saying “His work is incredible and he’s very focused on skill building. With his attributes and mine, we make a good team.” With Alan’s skills, he could open a shop anywhere in the world and clients would be keen to sit in his chair, but the man, best known for his slick fades, admitted if he had the

BarberNV.

chance to open a barbershop anywhere, he would choose the US. “I studied the way those guys fade hair and combined techniques from European, African American and ladies hairdressing.” Who knows what the future holds for Alan, but keep an eye out for him if you’re ever in the Big Apple... For now though, Alan is one of the headliners at the Great British Barber Bash in Scotland, having dubbed the last Barber Bash “a huge success.” He said: “The Scots are amazing people and I’m honoured to be sharing the stage with some of the countries elite.” With Alan’s undeniable talent, he has had the opportunity to attend numerous shows and events throughout his career. “Recently we were on stage at Barber Connect in Cardiff. I really enjoyed how well that went. “Luckily we had a great crowd and of course I can’t wait for the Barber Bash as it’s so relaxed. I like to feel comfortable on stage and I know the Barber Bash has the shop feel and good vibes.” Alan is also extremely passionate about training up and coming barbers and runs training for both barbers & stylists alike. Beak surrounds himself with inspirational barbers in Ruger Barber with the team including his brother Reece, Danielle Corbett, who will soon become their head trainer, training Ruger’s apprentice Ellie, and Jay Murray, who moved from Dublin to join the Ruger team at the age of twenty. “The guy’s talent is insane,” Alan said. Alan has worked tirelessly to become the incredible barber he is today and advises others that dedication and a thirst to learn is key to success. He said: “I went to shows, studied online and even sat in other people’s shops for months and months until I found my own formulas that worked for me. Find your formulas and work on perfecting them! At Ruger we are all trained baristas too, by adding that little edge and offering something like good coffee as well as a good haircut makes a huge difference.” The future is bright for Alan and BarberNV can’t wait to see his famous fades sweep across the ocean.

ACADEMYNV.

Sid Sottung Academy With training high on the agenda for many barbers, finding the right person and school to mentor you and develop your skills could hold the key to success in this highly competitive industry.

B

ut where to start? Well, they don’t come much more experienced or sought after than Sid Sottung. After twenty six years in the industry, Sid fulfilled a lifelong ambition by opening his very own academy in Nottingham last year and he hasn’t looked back. Sid began his career at the age of fourteen in a scene that sounds like something straight out of a movie! Working in an old school Italian barbershop in New York, Sid’s mother encouraged him to pursue this career as she thought it would be a great way to keep him off the streets. 26 years on - she was right! While the old barbershop was a great base for Sid to get know the art of the industry, it was when he worked with Vidal Sassoon that he gained most of his advanced training. Sid loved being a barber but he quickly discovered his true passion lay within teaching. As an educator for seventeen years, he decided it was time to put his skills to the best possible use and the Sid Sottung Academy was born. He explained: “We are a barbering academy, we specialise in mens cutting and styling , clipper cutting , wet shaving.” Some of the courses on offer include the five day intensive barbering course (beginner) , five day finishing course (a course to update and fix all areas of concern to barbers) , two day wet shaving course, one day intro to barbering, teacher training and one day clipper masterclass. Sid has been astounded by the demand for the courses, “ especially the five day barbering course with the free two day wet shaving course. This offer is valid until the end of August this year.” The Nottingham location has provided a base for students from around the UK to travel to. Sid told us: “It is the perfect location as we

can cater to all the students in the UK, being so central.” He added: “ Of course I would love to have a Scottish academy as a reflection for my love of Scotland . I used to live in Glasgow.” The Academy has attracted a variety of students, from 16-77 years of age! Sid said: “We see everyone come through our doors. From top educators to absolute beginners” The response has been amazing with the Academy appearing in 24 magazines internationally. Sid noted: “We’ve had thirteen international trips teaching abroad, we have expanded to a larger premises, and we were shortlisted in the top 3 for the “best training provider in UK” at Barber Connect this year. I don’t think thats too bad for being open less than two years.” We agree! The training element of his life as a barber is Sid’s passion and joy and he likes nothing better than taking a beginner under his wing and seeing the joy on their face when they complete their first haircut. He said: “I’m so proud of my students.” What can people gain out of attending the courses? “They gain self worth , new hope for their futures and direction in their lives. At the end of each course they receive a fully accredited and insurable certificate from my company.” And what are the tools and products of Sid’s choice? “The tools I use are the following: Sid Sottung Academy 6 inch barbering shears, Japanese made. Collexia blowdryer with diffuser, Beuy cutting combs , Neocape cutting cape, Andis clippers and trimmers, Vess blowdrying brush. A Kasho straight razor and Bluebeards Revenge straight razor . All the combs, scissors and brushes can be purchased at the Sid Sottung Academy.

“It is so important to be trained by a properly trained educator, not just a barber. Nowadays every instagram barber wants to start training to make fast money. A real educator will have passion and will share it with every student they meet”

46 | BARBERNV MAGAZINE

TrainingNV.

Products wise, I would have to say all the Lock, Stock and Barrel products. I have been using them for the last 6 years. I absolutely love them. I would also recommend Bonafide Pomades. For shaving I use Bluebeards revenge, Baxter of California and Proraso.” Regardless of whether it is at his academy or another, Sid believes training is vital. “It is so important to be trained by a properly trained educator, not just a barber. Nowadays every Instagram barber wants to start training to make fast money. A real educator will have passion and will share it with every student they meet. An educator is trained to educate the students properly. At our academy, my team has over 50 years of industry experience. We have never given up on any student and we don’t intend to do now.” Sid said: “My biggest success is my former student Josh O’Callaghan. He is an amazing barber who pushed himself so much to improve. He was such a natural barber I then decided to hire him to work as my new educator at my new academy. He is my right hand man that I do shows with in the UK and Internationally.” Sid may have his right hand man but he’s showing no signs of slowing down. He told BarberNV: “ We are opening up a barbershop next door to the academy in September. “We will hosting more seminars with the Lock, Stock and Barrel mens products which I am the Global Brand Ambassador for. We are developing our own step by step videos to help students understand the foundations of barbering, plus we are continuing to teach shows and seminars internationally - we are going to Russia very month from September to the end of next year. I am also going to Indonesia and America. We are really just enjoying the moment now and doing the best we can with every 24 hours that goes by.” That’s a lesson we could all learn to follow from this educator extraordinaire.

If you are a Barbering Training Academy or college and wish to have your upcoming training dates in the next issue of BarberNV, please don’t hesitate to email the relevant details to, lorena@salonnv.co.uk. BarberNV would be more than happy to feature any of your courses being held across the UK.

ERIK LANDER EDUCATION

E

rik Lander has over thirty years’ experience within the hairdressing and barbering industry - with his parents having their own salon, Top Spot, it seems he was destined for this vocation. After completing a five year apprenticeship, Erik then ventured into training, completing his L3, Licentiateship (LCGI) and his teaching, assessing and verifying qualifications. In 1999 he applied to become one of the founder members of the Habia Skill Team. He works with the Skills Team all over the world, demonstrating the latest techniques and promoting the NVQ/HIQ standards. Erik then became Habia’s International Educator and Skills Team Manager. After 6 years in this role he became Habia’s Education Director, which still remains one of his roles to date. Alongside delivering training as Habia’s Education Director, Erik is the longest standing guest artist for Goldwell UK, delivering both men’s and ladies cutting courses in their London academy and around Britain. He is also a British Barbering Association (BBA) Master Barber, delivering training for the BBA Menspire Mentoring Programme. ‘Erik Lander Education,’ is Erik’s training academy, which he has been running for over

50 | BARBERNV MAGAZINE

twenty years. His knowledge and inspiration is second to none, with his passion for imparting in-depth education to the highest possible level. His teaching techniques include breaking the skills down to ensure that all of his students have a clear understanding for every aspect he is sharing with them. His philosophy is, “It’s all in the detail.” Erik will also travel to you by holding courses in colleges or training centres in your preferred location – amazing. Erik says, “Ultimately my goal is to give back time, mentoring and skills to the next generation of young, up and coming hairdressers and barbers of the future.” Erik ensures his skills are current and up to date, to guarantee he is training with the latest techniques in the barbering and hairdressing world. “We work in an industry that is constantly evolving and moving forward and without updating your skills on a regular basis you end up falling behind, this is one thing for a stylist but for a trainer it’s unacceptable,” he said. Erik is wonderfully passionate about training and helping up and coming barbers be the best they can be in offering the most recent skills needed to stay on trend.
