don’t forget to pack travel insurance
More Canadians are looking to adventure a little closer to home, but they might not be as protected as they think.
A recent TD Insurance survey conducted by The Harris Poll Canada revealed that nearly threequarters of Canadians polled plan to travel for pleasure this year, and half of those people plan to visit another province or territory.
But only 51 per cent of those Canadians polled that plan to visit another province or territory plan
to purchase travel insurance at all, and even fewer plan to purchase emergency travel medical coverage.
The number one reason why they don’t feel the need to purchase travel medical insurance for their domestic trip? They believe they’re already protected.
While provincial or territorial health plans may provide some
level of coverage for certain medical services outside of where you live, out-of-pocket expenses for services that aren’t covered can add up quickly.
“Planning for the unexpected is just as important as planning your trip,” says Anthony Ricci, an associate vice president, at TD Insurance.
“Don’t assume your existing provincial or territorial health plan is enough. When travelling outside of your home province or territory, travel medical insurance could fill critical gaps.”
What is and isn’t covered when you head elsewhere in Canada
will vary. For example, some provinces won’t provide coverage for expensive medical services such as ground and air ambulance transportation.
Here are some things to keep in mind to help make your travel experience smoother:
know your coverage gaps
Before you travel, check whether you have adequate coverage for your trip through your credit card, existing insurance provider or employer, and consider topping up your existing coverage if you feel you need more.
Don’t assume your existing provincial or territorial health plan is enough. When travelling outside of your home province or territory, travel medical insurance could fill critical gaps.
research the area you’re visiting in advance
This will help you know if there are areas to avoid or risks that can impact your safety.
pack appropriately
Have your documents ready, prescriptions handy and insurance details available.
keep your home protected.
Arrange to stop deliveries to your home that could arrive while you’re away, or arrange for a neighbour you trust or family members to keep an eye out and collect any mail. ■

You don’t have to leave home to have a great vacation. With its vast landscapes, vibrant cities and diverse cultural heritage, Canada offers an array of opportunities for unforgettable staycations. Whether you’re exploring local attractions, transforming your backyard into a private oasis or hitting the road, here are some tips to help you plan the ultimate staycation.
Set the scene at home. Transform your home into a retreat. Think cozy movie nights, spa vibes in the bathroom or outdoor dining under string lights. Consider what helps you un-
wind and bring that into your space. Before you unplug, make sure your home is protected. Review your home insurance policy to ensure you’re covered for things like water damage, theft or unexpected incidents. Plan local adventures. Act like a tourist in your own city by visiting museums, hiking trails, beaches or even that new restaurant you’ve been eyeing. Planning a few off-the-beatenpath adventures can make your staycation feel fresh and exciting. If you’re using your car for day trips, make sure your auto insurance is up to date. Insurance providers like Belairdirect offer features like 24/7 roadside
assistance and accident forgiveness, so you’re covered even when you’re close to home. Create a flexible budget. Even though you’re staying close to home, expenses can still add up if you’re not careful. Set a budget to keep things in check, but make sure to leave some wiggle room for spontaneous fun.
A great staycation is all about balance, relaxation, adventure and peace of mind. With the right plans in place, you can fully unwind and have fewer things to worry about while you’re in staycation mode.

Summer is a perfect time to enjoy the warm weather with family and friends, and it’s also an ideal season for home improvements. Whether you’re looking to increase your home’s value, make eco-friendly upgrades or simply enhance your living experience, here are a few handy renovation tips to consider.
Summer heat can drive up energy costs, so focus on making your home more energy efficient to keep it cool and reduce air conditioning costs. Have a maintenance professional inspect all walls for any cracks that need to be sealed to keep water out and avoid major damage. Upgrade insulation and seal any drafts to prevent cool air from escaping and replace any shingles on your roof that are broken or loose to avoid water leaks.
If your budget allows, consider updating your kitchen, bathroom or living spaces. These are high-traffic areas that significantly impact your home’s value. Even small changes like new cabinet hardware, recessed lighting or a stylish new backsplash can transform a space.
Take advantage of the warm weather by enhancing your outdoor spaces. Start by power-washing your deck or patio to remove dirt and grime. Consider staining or sealing the wood to protect it from the elements and give it a fresh appearance. Adding some comfortable outdoor furniture, colourful cushions and a few potted plants can transform your backyard into a cozy retreat.
install energy-efficient fixtures
Replace old incandescent light bulbs with LED bulbs, which use less energy and have a longer lifespan. Consider installing a programmable thermostat to better manage your cooling system and help save on energy bills. Ceiling fans are also a great addition to keep air circulating and reduce the need for air conditioning. These simple upgrades can lead to significant savings and increased home comfort.
Start by changing the air filters in your HVAC system to ensure better airflow and air quality in your home. Consider adding houseplants, which naturally purify the

air and add a touch of greenery to your decor. Plants like spider plants, peace lilies and snake plants are especially good at removing toxins from the air. Don’t forget to turn on the exhaust fan in your kitchen and bathrooms to reduce humidity and prevent mould growth.
If you’re thinking of starting some bigger projects this summer, it’s important to let your insurance provider know to ensure your policy remains in effect.
There may be additional insurance implications if certain work, like electrical or plumbing, isn’t done by licensed professionals.
Additionally, renovations that increase your home’s value may also affect your insurance. Whether the project is big or small, be sure to get a quote for any new coverage.
Companies like Belairdirect can provide a quote in minutes and help you along every step of the way.

“Small measures taken today can save time, money, and stress down the road. There are simple maintenance steps you can take to reduce the risk of flooding and wildfire to your home and they can typically be completed in less than a day.”
Forty years ago, Canada experienced 19 natural disasters per decade, on average. That number has now increased to 133. From extreme heat to wildfires and flooding, incidences of extreme weather are on the rise. While we can’t change the weather, there are things that can be done to prepare for major events and lessen their impact on our homes.
“With more people impacted by extreme weather, preparation matters,” says Carla Smith, Chief Climate Officer at Intact. “Small measures taken today can save time,
money, and stress down the road. There are simple maintenance steps you can take to reduce the risk of flooding and wildfire to your home and they can typically be completed in less than a day.”
If you live near forests and grasslands, keeping combustible ground cover such as mulch and plants at least 1.5 metres, about one and a half baseball bats, from the house perimeter is a must. Keep the lawn mowed to less than 10 centimetres, or about the height of a pop can, and
plant low-growing, well-spaced shrubs and other fire-resistant plants. Adding a non-combustible three-millimetre screen to all external vents, except for the dryer vent, along with fencing made of cement fiber boards, metal, chain link or stone within 1.5 metres of the house can all help prevent wildfires from spreading.
The simplest way to help reduce the risk of flooding is with regular maintenance of your home, both
inside and outside, twice a year. This includes removing debris from storm drains and cleaning out eavestroughs, checking for leaks in plumbing fixtures and appliances, testing your sump pump and cleaning out the backwater valve. Be sure to also keep obstructions well away from floor drains.
There are many simple and costeffective home upgrades available to help moderate temperature. Consider planting shade trees, growing vines over your brick walls, deck or
balcony, as well as using fans for air circulation and installing heat-resistant glazing on windows. During periods of extreme heat, these steps will help lower the temperature of your home without solely relying on an air conditioning unit.
The reality of climate change is that Canadians are experiencing more wildfires, homes are being flooded from torrential rain events, and more people are being impacted by extreme heat.
