FOREWORD Welcome to the Inaugural Issue of the ‘Acu-

men’ Magazine: a peer-refereed journal of a new kind. With its broad scope bridging students’ creative ideas, news and information, this journal is dedicated to a challenge rather than a topic or an intersection of topics; The challenge is to create a new generation of journalists who are solutions-oriented rather than reporters of problems.

Currently a number of programs have been established to skill the young generation in media and other professions to address the employability challenge. Yet, despite impressive milestones reached, wide gaps continue to exist, which has contributed to the low quality of journalism in the country.

According to a 2014 World Bank study, 70% of over 40,000 fresh graduates in Uganda are unable to secure a job because they are unemployable. Another 2014 survey by the Inter-University Council for East Africa states that 63% of youth in Uganda lack employable skills. There is a huge disconnect between academic qualification achieved and the market skills due to a rigid theoretical education system. Most media organizations we have worked with since 2012 have reported that they struggle to find students with relevant and required market skills.

This inaugural journal is partly the end-result of positive anger that led to the formation of the Media Challenge Initiative – a youth driven Non-profit building the next generation of Journalists through training, mentorship and experiential Peer-to-peer learning. This journal is part of the tools that we are using to skill the next generation of journalists. As we use this journal to connect with the world, we also put the students to task to put theoretical work to work as a way of preparing them for the market.

I would like to thank the heads of Journalism departments in Universities across Uganda, for encouraging their students to engage in practical activities that will enable them to be well prepared for the job market. I would like to recognize the effort made by students themselves to undertake this assignment. And, a special thanks to the student that tickled us to undertake this initiative – the Acumen magazine. The world needs more people like you.

Activities Online Journalism Training

Over the last two decades, advances in media technologies, which have changed the practice of journalism today. This training therefore focuses on the use of

multimedia tools such as computers, internet, digital audio recorders, video recorders, cameras and mobile phones to tell stories and their effects on journalism’s role in society.

The class will also include lectures on new-media themes, such as the security and ethical challenges of publishing online; the characteristics that distinguish news Web sites from print and broadcast media; and

The

advent internet has created exciting opportunities for radio production through podcasting. This course therefore will enable you to take advantage of these new technologies – as well as more traditional media – to communicate with audiences in a creative and exciting way.

The hands- on training will engage you in crafting of radio programmes on a variety of media platforms in production genres in form news, features, and shows. The training will equip you with the practical skills needed in the contemporary radio industry, with guest speakers, and field work. The course builds towards a final production project in which youw will create a complete 15-minute programme to broadcast standard

Television Production Training

Our Television training allows

you to specialise in a variety of production roles, both within our superb state of the art TV Studio as well as outside environments.

These include Camera, Editing, News production, Anchoring and Report.

As you progress through your training you will also be given the opportunity to further specialise in the specific production.

The training will equip you with the practical skills needed in the contemporary Television industry, with guest speakers, and field work. The course builds towards a final production project in which you will create a complete 15-minute production to broadcast standard
