storytellers and leaders equipped to create change in their communities through experiential peer-to-peer learning, ‘Next-Gen Journalist Program’, the Media Challenge Fellowship Program is an aggressive multimedia journalism training project awarded to the best 26 students from the InterUniversity Media Challenge, a practical reporting competition in 12 universities in Uganda.
The fellowship program is part of the MCI’s strategic vision of building the next generation of journalists who are not only multiskilled but also critical participants as change agents in changing their communities and the negative African narrative.
The Fellowship program is based on four pillars:
1. The concept of building a “one woman/man – army journalist”: a journalist with multifaceted skills and knowledge;
2. Solutions journalism: reporting on solutions shown to be effective a t addressing societal problems; advances positive and equitable development within society;
4. Leadership in journalism: nurturing fellows not only as skilled j ournalists but also as leaders in their communities and
Through practical reporting assignments in a newsroom setting, industry experts train our fellows in online, radio and television journalism, photography, data and investigative journalism. Fellows also gain experience in various beats: political, economy, health, environment and climate change, and security reporting. The program further includes career guidance sessions, visits to media houses and training in entrepreneurship and leadership skills. At completion, under the direction of our faculty members, each fellow produces an in-depth multimedia solutions journalism project, which is pitched to our network of media houses.
The Fellowship program provides connections and opportunities for fellows to gain jobs and internships in media houses. In addition, alumni of the program receive continuous career support through our alumni trainings, networking and career support activities.
