MESSAGE FROM THE DEAN

Dear Alumni and Friends, 2020 has been a year like no other. The global pandemic has changed everything, and we will continue to see the ripple effects for decades. Like most individuals and organizations, Loyola has had to pivot, make decisions in the face of uncertainty, and wait for things to unfold.

Through all of this, we have demonstrated an unwavering commitment to our students. We transitioned to remote and online learning in a matter of days to minimize disruption to classes and teaching. We guaranteed that all returning students would retain their scholarships through the fall 2020 semester. And we started issuing Student Emergency Fund grants to support students who were financially struggling in the aftermath of COVID-19. More than 10% of the student body applied for a Student Emergency Fund grant in the first week with a combined need of $260,000. It was philanthropy and gifts from the Loyola family that enabled us to meet these challenges head on.

Moreover, donor support enabled us to transition the Loyola Social Justice Law Clinic to at-home offices. This quick pivot allowed our clinical staff and students to continue representing clients and leverage the unfolding impact of the pandemic on the criminal justice system; ultimately securing the release of three women in April 2020 who collectively served nearly 80 years in prison for crimes they did not commit.

As I recount all of our accomplishments of the past year, I am reminded that it is the support and philanthropy of the entire law school family that makes it all possible. As proud as I am of what we have done as a school, I am thankful and humbled by all of those who have made this momentum possible.

We started 2020 excited to celebrate the law school’s Centennial. Things quickly changed, we adapted, and we launched virtual programs. The pandemic might keep us from celebrating in person, but I am inspired by how our community comes together.

The world is changing faster than ever, and we seek to drive innovation in that changing landscape. We are proud of the legacy of the past 100 years and all that we have accomplished, but also excited for what we can accomplish together in the years ahead. Because of your support, we have made great strides in positioning Loyola Law School to take on the social justice and legal challenges of the next 100 years.

ADVANCEMENT REPORT

Dear Alumni and Friends, The investment in Loyola Law School by alumni and friends totaled over $3.6 million in gifts and pledges this past fiscal year (FY20). Gifts from over 2,000 alumni, students, parents and family, faculty, staff, and friends directly supported Loyola’s students and programs.

Fiscal Year 2020 started like so many others. We welcomed the class of 2022 to campus in August and jumped right in to our annual end-of-summer event, PILF’s Auction Night—which raised 18% more for our public interest students than the year before. That momentum continued through the fall and start of 2020, as we kicked off a yearlong celebration of Loyola Law School’s Centennial. Despite our ambitions, plans were put on hold as the world responded to the global pandemic.

Looking at the year as a whole, here are some trends of FY20: Immediate Impact | The need for immediate resources was critical as the law school adapted to the changes brought on by the global pandemic. Donors rose to the occasion and more than 90% of gifts made in FY20 were current-use, meaning the funds are not invested as part of the law school’s endowment.

Supporting Students During the Pandemic | At a time when many organizations were adjusting to a world skeptical of snail mail and spiraling economic indicators, the law school launched a digital campaign to generate support for students struggling with food insecurity, work disruptions, housing instability, and other unanticipated expenses. In a matter of days, the Student Emergency Fund became one of the most supported funds in FY20.

We are proud to recognize the members of the Loyola family who rose to the occasion and supported the Student Emergency Fund on pages 29–30.

An Upward Trend for Social Justice Law Clinic | Loyola’s Social Justice Law Clinic and member clinics continue to grow under Dean Michael Waterstone’s leadership. 47% of all gifts made in FY20 were directed to one of our social justice clinics. Just four years ago, clinic support made up less than 15% of total giving. In FY20, nearly half of the gifts made to LLS support clinics like Loyola Project for the Innocent, Loyola Immigrant Justice Clinic, and the Center for Juvenile Law and Policy.

Your gifts make a difference in the lives of our students, the clients they serve through the Loyola Social Justice Law Clinic, and the financial health of the law school. We are deeply grateful for every gift received and celebrate the community of donors who invest in Loyola, its mission, and our students.

SCHOLARSHIPS AND AWARDS

Scholarships ensure that students who may not otherwise be able to attend Loyola benefit from Loyola’s nationally recognized legal education.

Donors can choose to give to existing scholarship funds or can create a named scholarship. Establishing a named scholarship increases Loyola’s financial security while helping the law school address student financial need.

Gifts to endowed scholarships build power as they are pooled with all other University endowment assets—currently valued at over $500 million. The principal is never spent; rather, it remains invested to build strength with market growth. Interest earned on the investment funds the scholarship and the distribution of earnings is generally 5% annually.

Eugene Ng attended the University of California Los Angeles and received a Bachelor of Arts in History.

Between college and law school, he worked as a legal assistant at Makarem & Associates, an employment law and personal injury firm.

Over the past two years, Eugene also worked as a law clerk at Alder Law, a personal injury firm. Currently, he is a fourth-year student, enrolled in Loyola’s evening division.

In his spare time, Eugene loves to play music and to root for the Lakers.

Eden Teferi ais a first-generation, Ethiopian American student and a Los Angeles native. Prior to attending Loyola, she earned her Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from UCLA. Eden is now in her second year of law school and is a leader within the Black Law Students Association. Eden is also a member of the Faculty Equity and Inclusion Committee and the International Human Rights Center.

Over the summer, Eden worked as a legal assistant for the Loyola Center for Conflict Resolution. Eden also spent her summer advocating alongside BLSA members against police brutality and systemic oppression. After law school, Eden hopes she will be able to continue her advocacy efforts as an international human rights lawyer.

James Komen is a third-year evening student and a registered consulting arborist, specializing in risk assessment, tree appraisal, and tree protection ordinance compliance. His work has led to interdisciplinary collaboration with insurance adjusters, builders, engineers, realtors, city planners, and lawyers. His research on palms and tree appraisal has been published in two academic journals.

James teaches workshops on tree risk and appraisal to industry professionals around the U.S. and Canada.

He is a Boston Marathoner and a former Zumba dance instructor. He lives with his wife and two daughters in the shade of a 200-year-old oak tree.
