SHAPING THE PARKWAY WILLIAM HILTON PARKWAY OVERVIEW

The SC Department of Transportation (SCDOT) is undertaking the US 278 Gateway Corridor project to address roadway issues along US 278 from the intersection of Moss Creek Drive to the intersection of Spanish Wells Road.

Create a memorable gateway experience to and from Hilton Head Island for residents and visitors alike.

Working with the SCDOT, the Town of Hilton Head Island and local design and transportation consultants are using local knowledge to create community-based solutions to enhance SCDOT’s preferred alternative.

Widen and improve multi-use trail on bridge for safer and more comfortable use.

GATEWAY CORRIDOR COMMITTEE GUIDING PRINCIPLES The Hilton Head Island US 278 Gateway Corridor Committee was formed to work cooperatively with the SCDOT to gather information, obtain and provide citizen input into the EA process, and make recommendations to Town Council regarding the US 278 Environmental Assessment and Design Alternatives.

Reduce lane widths from 12 feet to 11 feet in Stoney to minimize property impacts and calm traffic.

CREATE A PARKWAY NOT A HIGHWAY

As the only access point onto Hilton Head Island, the Corridor is the most visible and important gateway on the island. As such it should be considered more than a highway, but a parkway that is reflective of the unique Hilton Head Island identity.
