the wonderful things that we do, but is also an important part of the unique tapestry that makes up our beautiful Low Country home.

2024 was a year of fulfillment for Pockets Full of Sunshine. Our calendar was literally filled. Full of more activities and involvement in community events than ever before. Our pro gramming was full, literally and figuratively. Our PFS days were varied and busy and we met new Rays and their families as our waitlist for more regular involvement filled once again. And our hearts were certainly full as we welcomed new volunteers, forged new partnerships and were once again blown away by the outpouring of love and support from our friends and neighbors. It was such a ‘full’ year that we also took the first steps towards fulfilling one of our long held dreams, the Sunshine House. After operating out of generously donated space for the last few years until we were literally bursting at the seams, we purchased our very own building in early 2024 and are now the proud new owners of 64 Arrow Road. We are delighted by this next step and all of the opportunities it will provide for the Rays, humbled by the love and generosity that got us to this point, and also realistic about the hard work that lies ahead as we continue to fundraise and renovate it to best suit our needs before we move in next year. We are so grateful to each of you who helped not only make this dream a reality, but who make every day at PFS a dream come true for the special adults we serve. Your continued support and belief in our mission mean everything to us. 2025 is looking sunny already!

• Increased our number of Sunshine Social offerings, reaching more Rays than ever before!

HILTON HEAD ISLAND TAXES

REAL ESTATE AND PERSONAL PROPERTY TAX

There are many tax districts in Beaufort County each with a corresponding tax rate. The map above will guide to for the local area.

REAL ESTATE TAX AT PURCHASE

When you purchase real estate the county will use the purchase value to calculate the taxes due. This will be reduced to 4% of the purchase if you are to reside in the property and 6% if you use it for any other purpose. The result will then be subject to the millage for your district.

REAL ESTATE TAX AFTER PURCHASE

The county uses an assessed value, determined by them, to calculate continuing real estate taxes. This is also reduced to 4% for residents or 6% for nonresidents. That number is multiplied by the corresponding millage rate to determine the amount of taxes. Resident millage rate is lower than nonresidents as residents do not pay that portion of the millage relating to school operations.

IF YOU ARE OVER 65

AN EXAMPLE

One-year residents, or more, who are over 64, or blind, or have a disability may reduce their assessed value of their primary residence by $50,000 before reducing the assessed value to 4%.

Purchase Price = $300,000 X 4 or 6 percent X the millage rate shown on the map above for your district = taxes due. For example, 300,000 X 4% (resident) = 12,000 X .102 millage rate in Hilton Head Plantation = $1,224 in taxes due.

Remember, the information here is general in nature. If you have specific questions about your personal taxes you should check with the Country Auditor (843 255 2500), the Tax Assessor’s Office (843 255 2400) or your personal accountant.

Dillard-Jones Builders

The All-Inclusive Custom Home Builder

Dillard-Jones Builders is more than a custom home builder—we’re a legacy in the making. As a familyowned company, we’ve spent decades creating exceptional homes and lasting client relationships. Now, we’re elevating that legacy by uniting our Custom Homes, Cottage portfolio, Renovations, and Services divisions under the Dillard-Jones name, delivering a seamless experience for every stage of homeownership.

Understanding Residential Constructionto-Permanent Loans

Building a custom home is a significant milestone. While the process can feel daunting, it doesn’t have to be – especially when it comes to managing the finances of your construction. Construction-topermanent loans remove the financing complexities by combining construction funding and long-term mortgage financing into one streamlined solution.

A construction-to-permanent loan is a unique financing option that allows homeowners to fund the construction of their new home and automatically convert the loan into a permanent mortgage once construction is complete. This type of loan simplifies the borrowing process by combining two loans into one, saving homebuyers time and money.

How It Works: A Phase-by- Phase Breakdown

APPLICATION & LOAN APPROVAL

When applying for a construction-topermanent loan, borrowers secure a single

loan that covers both the construction phase and the permanent mortgage. This means there is only one closing process, which saves homebuyers money on closing costs compared to obtaining separate loans for construction and the permanent mortgage.

CONSTRUCTION DRAWS & PAYMENTS

During construction, funds are disbursed in stages known as “draws” based on the progress of your home build. After each stage of construction, lenders provide funds to your builder to continue progress on your home. Lenders typically require inspections to ensure that work has been completed before releasing additional funds. This removes the hassle of managing builder payments and keeps your project moving seamlessly.

During the building process, borrowers make interest-only payments on the amount disbursed so far during constructioninstead of paying towards both principal and interest. For example, if your total loan amount is $500,000 but only $200,000 has

been drawn for initial construction costs, interest payments are calculated based on the $200,000 draw until more funds are drawn.

CONVERSION TO PERMANENT MORTGAGE

Once construction is complete and all inspections are passed, the construction loan automatically transitions into a permanent mortgage. With no second closing, borrowers begin making monthly mortgage payments that include both principal and interest over a typical term of 15 to 30 years.

A construction-to-permanent loan offers convenience and cost-efficiency—but choosing the right lending partner makes all the difference. Before breaking ground, contact a lender to see if a construction-topermanent loan is the right fit for you. Local lenders can be key players in removing the complexities, stress and added expenses from your project.

Bringing back bold with checkerboard

WHY CHECKERBOARD TILES ARE THE HOTTEST TREND IN INTERIOR DESIGN

If you’ve been keeping an eye on the latest home design trends, you’ve probably noticed a bold pattern making a major comeback: checkerboard tiles. This classic design, which dates to the 1950s, has resurfaced in a big way, captivating homeowners and designers alike with its timeless charm and modern versatility. So, what’s behind the resurgence of checkerboard tiles, and why are they so popular right now?

Matcha Verde Marble –Artistic Tile (Natural Stone)
Ann Sacks Checkerboard Hall

A PERFECT MIX OF RETRO AND MODERN

Checkerboard tiles offer the perfect blend of nostalgia and contemporary flair. While the pattern evokes a sense of retro cool, it’s also incredibly adaptable to modern spaces. Whether you’re looking to add a playful touch to your kitchen, bring personality to a bathroom, or create an eye-catching statement in an entryway, checkerboard tiles offer endless design possibilities. The bold contrast of black and white, or even more unique color combinations, creates a visual impact that is both striking and stylish.

VERSATILITY FOR EVERY SPACE

One of the reasons checkerboard tiles have become so popular is their versatility. This pattern works beautifully in both traditional and contemporary settings. In a kitchen, the bold squares can define the space, adding energy and style without overwhelming the room. In bathrooms, they add texture and depth, transforming an otherwise simple space into something dynamic and chic. Even in living rooms or hallways, checkerboard tiles can serve as a foundation for a variety of design styles, from minimalist to eclectic.

A Timeless Design That’s Here to Stay

Another key factor in the appeal of checkerboard tiles is their timeless nature. The black-and-white pattern transcends trends and is just as fresh today as it was decades ago. It offers a level of sophistication that never goes out of style, making it a great investment for both homeowners and designers looking to create spaces that will last for years.

EASY TO CUSTOMIZE

With endless color and material options— think marble, porcelain, or even terracotta— checkerboard tiles allow you to personalize your design to suit your tastes. Whether you want to go for a classic black-and-white scheme or experiment with bold, colorful options, the checkerboard pattern can adapt to any aesthetic, from high-end luxury to relaxed boho chic.

In short, checkerboard tiles are more than just a passing trend—they’re a design statement. With their timeless appeal, versatility, and ability to bring personality to any space, it’s no wonder they’re one of the hottest trends in interior design right now. Ready to make a bold statement in your home? Checkerboard tiles are the way to go.

“Make Room for Life!”

More Space Place in Bluffton and Mt. Pleasant, SC

We can probably all agree there is never enough space for all the stuff we have and want to keep. Residents that transfer from older and larger homes to smaller homes with a more contemporary open floor plan are realizing that less walls and less rooms means less storage.

Fortunately, there are plenty of options for home owners, builders and remodelers to help make more use of the spaces in our homes. The More Space Place is a good place to start. Since 2003, they have specialized in home organization and storage solutions. Professional designers are trained using the latest technology to provide customers with the best project experience possible. The modern CAD design systems can show you the exact room in 3D and color to help you get the design you want before you have to invest a dime. Today’s materials are stronger, more durable, and have a larger variety of colors and styles to choose from. There is probably a color and style that will fit just about anyone. And if none of the stock colors are right for your taste, custom wood cabinets are available to make your project as specific as you like, right down to the paint or stain color.

Let’s start with closet space–where we start and end every day! You use this room almost as much as you use any other room in your home. If you have or had wire closets, you know how inefficient the wire system is. If you can see your walls through your clothes, then you have waisted space. Valuable space that can be better utilized by a custom designed closet system. Our designers will measure your closet walls, trim, ceiling heights and electrical items, then meticulously measure your garments so every item has a properly designed space. Establishing proper space for short, medium and long hanging garments ensures your closet is utilizing every square inch efficiently.

Shelving is a great place to store folded items, hats, shoes and purses. Higher elevations are great for storing lighter items like empty suite cases and items less often used. Out of season items can be moved closer to the ceiling with wardrobe lifts that go up with ease and pull down with a slight tug on a handle. What ever

you need, the designer will figure it out. Here are some key factors to consider in designing your closets.

The Master closets is your space. Make it beautiful and as functional as possible. This is YOUR space. If the closet is shared, choose which side is the 70% SHE is going to get!

Decide if you want the cabinets off the ground or floor based. Floor-based cabinets typically cost about 20% more due to the added materials needed, but add the beauty of built-in cabinetry. Hanging closets are efficient and make it easier to clean under.

Opt for built in dressers. A popular feature in custom closets today, built-in dressers come in a variety of widths, heights and depths. Use them to store socks, t-shirts and under garments.

Space for shoes. Women average between 40-50 pairs of shoes. Men typically have eight to ten pair. There are a variety of ways to store shoes from straight and slanted shelves to rotating shoe towers that hold up to 80 pairs of shoes.

and ceiling racks with pulley systems that are motorized to make it easier to load and unload. Vinyl slat wall is perfect for moving garden tools and sport equipment off the floor so you can park the car in the garage again.

Pantry, Laundry Rooms and Drop Zones are other places you can easily maximize your storage space on a smaller budget and these projects that take less than a day to complete.

Murphy beds and Wall beds are useful for turning a slightly used guest bedroom into a functional home office, craft or flexible use space. The Wall bed provides a comfortable guest room when needed, but the bed is easily hidden for everyday use.

Hanging clothes. Most hanging garments can be double hung and taller garment rods can have shelving above to capture more valuable storage space. Shirts, pants, shorts and dresses all hang at specific heights and are designed for your specific garments in a custom closet.

Don’t forget the accessories. Velvet lined jewelry trays, personal valets and belt and tie racks are just a few to mention. But we are seeing a lot more motion sensor LED lighting and electronic locking drawers systems today.

Garage Storage is another valuable storage area. Options include tall wall cabinets for large storage solutions, base and upper cabinets for workbench areas,

More Space Place has the largest selection of Wall beds on display than any other furniture store in the Southeast and in every size from Twin to King. There are hundreds of configurations in nearly unlimited styles and colors including bookcases and desks that turn into beds, Wall beds with custom sofas, beds that fold on their side, and cabinet beds that can be relocated to any room at any time.

There are many places in the home where custom modular cabinets can give you the storage you need, in a style and color you like and at a price you can afford. It starts with a Free in-home consultation by a professional designer who understands all the elements of closet design. The whole process takes about an hour, and then the professionals do what they do best, “Make Room for Life!”

Cockroach Control: The Key To Physical and Economic Health

Cockroaches are among the most resilient pests on the planet, thriving in diverse environments around the world, obviously including the Lowcountry. Unfortunately, their presence can lead to a variety of serious problems, impacting both human health and the integrity of our living spaces.

One of the most significant issues posed by cockroaches is the fact that they carry a host of pathogens, including bacteria, viruses, and parasites, that can cause illnesses in humans. The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases has linked cockroaches to the transmission of diseases such as Salmonella and E. coli, which can lead to severe gastrointestinal distress. Their droppings, saliva, and shed body parts can trigger allergic reactions and asthma attacks, particularly in children and individuals with preexisting respiratory conditions.

In residential settings, cockroaches can create an unsanitary environment. They are scavengers and typically thrive in dirty, cluttered areas where food debris and waste are present. Their habitual feeding on organic matter means that kitchens, pantries, and bathrooms are prime targets for infestations. Not only does this contribute to foul odors, but the accumulation of bacteria from cockroach feces can contaminate surfaces and food, posing further health risks.

Additionally, the presence of cockroaches can lead to significant emotional distress for residents. The mere sight of these pests can provoke anxiety, panic, and disgust. This psychological impact can be particularly pronounced in individuals who have a phobia of insects, making it challenging for them to feel comfortable in their own homes. Consequently, infestations can lead to increased levels of stress and reduced quality of life.

From an economic perspective, cockroach infestations can be costly. Property owners may face expenses related to repairs from damage (since cockroaches can chew through wiring and insulation), and even potential legal issues from health code violations in commercial properties. The presence of cockroaches can deter potential buyers or renters, leading to decreased property value and loss of income.

Moreover, cockroaches reproduce at an alarming rate, with a single female able to produce dozens of offspring over her lifetime. This rapid reproductive capacity can lead to large infestations that are challenging to control. DIY methods often prove ineffective, necessitating pest control services by trained professionals using proven and effective techniques.

In conclusion, the problems generated by cockroaches are multifaceted, ranging from health risks and unsanitary conditions to psychological stress and economic burdens. Addressing these issues requires a proactive approach to cleanliness and regular pest control measures to keep these resilient pests at bay.

Saving money is really a byproduct of saving energy

If you are a member of an electric cooperative, you might already be aware of the energy saving programs available to you. In an initiative known as Beat the Peak, Palmetto Electric Cooperative and other South Carolina electric cooperatives are working hard to manage energy use during peak times. Peaks occur on the coldest winter mornings and hottest summer afternoons, when the demand for electricity, and the cost for it, is the highest. By keeping energy usage low during these peak times, the co-op can lower total power costs. Because electric cooperatives are not-for-profit companies, the savings are passed on to the co-op’s members.

By joining Beat the Peak, members can save both energy and money in a variety of ways. First, voluntarily sign up for Beat the Peak alerts to be notified by email, text or voice message at times when you can help reduce electricity use by turning off lights, adjusting your thermostat and delaying the use of major appliances such as hot water heaters, washing machines and clothes dryers. More than 60,000 Beat

the Peak participants throughout the state of South Carolina have helped save a projected $848,000 in wholesale power costs.

For years, Palmetto Electric Cooperative members have had access to H2O Select, an electric water heater program that saves members money each year in water heater rebates and incentives. By heating water when the demand for electricity is low and storing that thermal energy for later use, electric water heaters save members and the cooperative money.

In a similar way, the Smart Thermostat program helps members save by allowing Palmetto Electric to adjust your thermostat during peak energy periods. After enrolling, members will receive a FREE smart thermostat with FREE standard installation and could be eligible for Smart Rewards bill credits Smart thermostats are designed to ensure that your home is at a specific temperature when it needs to be and eliminates unnecessary HVAC usage. Smart thermostats are more accurate at measuring the current indoor

temperature and more efficient at raising or lowering it to your desired indoor temperature. They are Wi-Fi enabled and therefore, you can monitor and control them using a smartphone, tablet or computer – no matter where you are.

When you install a smart thermostat, you can:

• CONTROL: Conveniently adjust your home’s temperature from anywhere, anytime. Operate it from your mobile device, computer or tablet.

• TRACK: View monthly energy reports that show usage.

• SAVE: The thermostat adjusts when you’re not home. The thermostat also adjusts for a few degrees during peak periods. During energy saving events, the thermostat’s temperature settings will be adjusted as needed, up to 4 degrees above or below your desired setting. *You will be notified prior to an upcoming peak event and will have the opportunity to opt-out if desired. By reducing your electricity use during peak times, you will be helping reduce costs for all Palmetto Electric members, and you could be eligible for Smart Rewards bill credits.

The Blueprint for a Stronger Community

Brought to you by Coastal States Bank

When building a home, it all starts with a blueprint — a vision carefully mapped out with expertise, care, and intention. The same is true for building a strong, thriving community. Coastal States Bank’s role as a community bank goes far beyond transactions. It’s about investing in the people, places, and ideas that shape the Lowcountry’s future with service that’s reliable, personal and local.

Since its inception on Hilton Head Island in 2004, CSB has been guided by a simple philosophy: communities are strengthened by relationships. Cultivating these relationships in the Lowcountry are local bankers who live here, work here, and are fully committed

to helping their neighbors grow personally and in business with banking and lending services.

“We take pride in being part of the foundation that supports the Lowcountry,” said Diana McDougall, CSB’s Lowcountry Regional President. “We have been a part of so many special projects and developments in our communities over the last 20 years and it’s been great to work closely with leaders, business owners and families to support our region’s growth.”

Just like a trusted architect or builder, CSB is committed to supporting individuals and businesses at every stage. From personal checking accounts and home loans for a growing family to

digital banking and commercial lending for growing businesses, CSB’s solutions are designed with the needs of the Lowcountry in mind and decisions made locally by people who understand the unique landscape of Bluffton, Beaufort, Hilton Head Island and beyond.

“As we serve people in our branches and community, it’s special to witness. As they grow from a family of two to a family of five or from one business location to two or more, you become a cheerleader for their success which translates to the bustling community we see today,” said Diana.

As CSB and the Lowcountry evolve, the bank’s mission remains the same – to continue building a stronger community together through lasting, local relationships.

Coastal States Bank – Local. And Proud of It.

Maximum Layers!

The More-Is-More approach to Interior Designing is back as trends evolve moving away from the less is best!

In recent conversations, homeowners are requesting their spaces to speak more of their personality.  They are wanting to surround themselves with texture, pattern, and bold vibrant colors. Layering it up with wallpapers, woven materials, trims, fringe and patterned everything including drapery, furniture, rugs and pillows…. OH’MY!

This task for us designers is not an easy one, as it takes a trained eye to mix these materials well for a balanced lovely space but I can say it’s certainly more exciting to design than that gray on gray trend that I thought would never go away!!!

Let’s talk Layers - Maximizing your layers in a room with window treatments. Say what you will, but window dressings have the potential to make or break the look of a room. Drapes on their own can be a room’s standout feature, and when paired with other window treatments like shades, shutters, or blinds, they’re like the final accessory to a beautiful outfit!

Carolina Window Designs

1 2 3

PHOTO 1 | In this open concept space we wanted to emphasize the height of the dining room. We designed two-toned drapery panels accented with a trim installed on beautiful metal poles with rings high above the window, with shutters installed inside the window. Along with the beautiful jeweled light fixture, boucle’ dining chairs and standout mirror to reflect the rooms beauty we have a stunning well layered dining room that screams sophistication!

PHOTO 2 | In this primary bedroom we layered up with trims, fringe, texture and patterns! The large window has again two layers of window treatments. Two-toned blue drapery side panels with second layer of beautiful cream sheers that open and close for privacy all installed on a metal pole with stunning crystal finials that add a little bling. The two smaller windows have a faux pleated roman valance with a Greek patterned banding that repeats again in the blue fringed euro shams and bedwarmer at the end of the bed. The room is a graceful example of how layering creates beauty!

PHOTO 3 | When choosing window treatments, it’s smart to ensure they complement the rest of your decor. In the case of this pretty house in Hampton Hall we intermixed a soft green with tans, golds, & whites. The windows in both living room and dining room have a neutral cotton floral contrasting against the green walls. The beautiful wallpaper in the entrance complements the rest of the custom decor.

PHOTO 4 | Don’t forget the bathroom!  We wanted to conceal the shower as this is used more as a powder room. We made this shower curtain out of an embroidered floral and installed it below the ceiling trim to give height and elegance. After painting the white vanity to this eye catching red, blingy hardware and mirror you have a spectacular bathroom that you never want to leave! 4

Kitchen Remodeling Moneysaver: Reface, Don’t Replace!

RENOVATION SECRETS

Recycling doesn’t just apply to cans, bottles and newspapers –“You can save a bundle when remodeling your kitchen by refacing your existing cabinets instead of tearing out and replacing them,” says Ben Zaidman of American Wood Reface.

Cabinet refacing involves removing the old doors, covering all exposed surfaces with new material, then installing brand new doors and drawer fronts, hinges, and hardware. “The materials we use in refacing, as well as the skill of our installers, is what differentiates us from other refacers,” says Zaidman. Refacing with the select grade solid wood – as does American Wood Reface

–improves not only the appearance, but, in fact, cabinets refaced with solid wood are often better than new! “The quality of an American Wood Reface kitchen is comparable to custom cabinetry, with beauty, durability, and increased home value that will last for many years to come,” Zaidman adds.

This family-owned company transforms tired, drab kitchens into sleek, bright, and modern kitchens while saving customers up to half the cost over tearing out and replacing their cabinets! American Wood Reface never uses thin veneers nor laminates – and their components are custom made for each kitchen, then installed by their highly skilled master carpenters.

AWR offers nearly unlimited choices in woods, door styles, solid colors, or wood finishes, including high-end finish

upgrades, enabling customers to express their own unique design taste.

“You aren’t stuck with your kitchen’s shortcomings, either,” says Zaidman, “We can modify or add new cabinets, extend them to the ceiling, or change function – such as converting base cabinets to roomy drawer banks. We can install tile backsplashes, undercabinet lighting, roll-out shelves, and new quartz countertops, too.”

It may sound like all this wizardry would involve many weeks of inconvenience and dysfunction in your home but, amazingly, AWR transforms most kitchens in less than one week!

It’s no surprise that American Wood Reface, a local company that takes customer service seriously, holds an A+ rating from the Better Business Bureau and can supply many local references. They are multi-year winners of Angi’s Super Service Award with hundreds of 5-star reviews on Angi.com and they enjoy a perfect 5.0 rating on Google with more than 40 reviews.

You can also stop by AWR’s website at www.woodreface.com to read reviews, check out “before and after” photos, get renovation tips, and learn more about the refacing process. Protect your Home with Window Films for UV & Storm Protection

Homeowners are constantly looking for ways to protect their property from the elements. From the sun’s damaging UV rays to the high winds of hurricanes, safeguarding windows is an ssential step in home maintenance. Protective Window Films offer an effective solution to these challenges, providing enhanced safety, energy efficiency, and durability.

PROTECTING INTERIORS FROM UV DAMAGE

Natural sunlight can brighten a home, but it also exposes furniture, flooring, and decor to ultraviolet (UV) rays, leading to fading and deterioration over time. Sun Control Window Films can block up to 99% of harmful UV rays, significantly reducing damage to interior surfaces. This allows homeowners to enjoy natural light without sacrificing the longevity of their belongings. Additional benefits include:

• Improved Energy Efficiency–Helps regulate indoor temperatures and lowers cooling costs.

• Reduced Glare–Enhances visibility on screens and minimizes discomfort from direct sunlight.

• Enhanced Privacy & Aesthetics–Available in clear and tinted options to suit different home styles.

HURRICANE PROTECTION AND HOME SECURITY

For those living in hurricane-prone areas, high winds and flying debris pose a significant threat to windows. Safety & Security Window Films are designed to reinforce glass, preventing it from shattering upon impact. These films help to:

• Mitigate Storm Damage–Holds broken glass in place to reduce injury and structural damage.

• Increase Home Security–Strengthens windows to deter break-ins and forced entry attempts.

• Lower Insurance Costs–Many insurance providers offer incentives for impact-resistant window protection.

Installing Window Films is a proactive step toward protecting both a home’s interior and its structural integrity. Whether safeguarding against the sun’s rays or reinforcing against storms, these films offer a versatile solution for homeowners seeking long-term protection.

Save Money While Enjoying Your Pool

Many pool owners tell us that they really enjoy the experience of a warm pool, but the cost of heating a pool can be significant even with a highly efficient system like a Heat Pump Pool Heater (HPPH).

Here are six methods that will help. Each pool environment is different, and while the value of each method is universal, they are not all universally applicable to a particular pool.

1 | Solar heating is essentially free (there are some small increases in the cost to pump the water through the large solar panels, but it is minimal). The downside of solar is that it rarely meets the needs for a full season of heating demand, or it fails to provide heat fast enough or when the sun isn’t shining. But when solar is available and you have the budget to purchase a solar system with a Heat Pump Pool Heater backup, you can have the best, most economical system available.

2 | If you have a Heat Pump Pool Heater (HPPH) system only, the time of day that you run your HPPH is a system operation parameter you should address. HPPH’s get their heat from the air. So, logically, the best time to run a HPPH is when the air temperature is at its warmest. As long as your filtration is running at the warmest time of the day,

Provided by Year Round Pool

your HPPH will operate at its optimum Coefficiency of Performance (COP). COP is the measure of energy output divided by energy input.

3 | And speaking of COP…the COP is the efficiency rating of the HPPH. As mentioned in item 2, this measure of efficiency changes as the air temperature changes. The unit is more efficient the warmer the air temperature. Another aspect of COP to consider the overall COP rating as applied to the individual model of HPPH you purchase. Not all HPPHs are created equal. If we do a comparison of HPPHs and assume all have the same heating capacity, or BTUh, you will find a variety of COP ratings available on the market. The higher the COP rating, the more efficient the HPPH will be. The percentage difference between one COP rating and another will equate to the percentage savings available between the lower and higher rated COP heater. This means you should buy the highest COP-rated unit your budget allows while making sure the model you select has the capacity, or BTUh, to meet your heating demand. Your Pool Professional can help you with this decision process.

4 | Controlling evaporation. Heat loss on any pool, heated by any means, is primarily driven by evaporation from the surface of the pool. Upwards

of 75% of heat loss is through this method. So controlling that evaporative loss is key to reducing heating cost. There are three types of blankets that can help control evaporation: Solid, Floating and Liquid. The Liquid blanket is easy to use, and is inexpensive, but also carries the lowest level of effectiveness.

5 | Wind at the surface of the pool creates ripples or small waves on the surface of the pool ultimately accelerating evaporation. So, creating a pool environment that is shielded from wind will greatly help reduce heating cost.

6 | The last method is the pool temperature set point. The warmer you heat your pool water, the more it will cost to keep it warm. Each degree rise in temperature can equate to an approximate 15-18% increase in operation cost. So, while an 88°F pool is nice and toasty warm, it will cost a lot more to maintain than a pool that is held at 85°F.

There is nothing better than a warm pool. These are some tried and true ways to help keep that cost to a minimum.

Improve Your Well-Being with a Hot Tub

Provided by Year Round Pool

A high-quality hot tub can improve your life in ways you may not have considered before. Hot tubs bring families closer together while helping to connect with the world around us. Incorporating hot tub usage into your daily routine can also help improve your general wellbeing. Regular spa use might also reduce stress, ease pain, improve the quality of your sleep, and increase flexibility.

IMPROVED RANGE OF MOTION

As we age, we lose our range of motion. Through regular usage, your hot tub can help you restore lost flexibility and slow the natural stiffening that comes with age. The warm water of a spa creates hydrostatic pressure—the pressure caused by the weight of fluids—on the body. This reduces joint inflammation, which in turn aids mobility.

RELIEF FROM ARTHRITIS SYMPTOMS

Spending time in your hot tub may provide temporary relief from arthritic joint pain. In a controlled study examining the effects of spa therapy on patients with severe osteoarthritis, researchers found significant reduction in pain after just two weeks. In fact, patients undergoing

spa therapy experienced less pain than those undergoing drug therapy at the same time. Likewise, a study of patients with rheumatoid arthritis demonstrated that hydrotherapy reduced pain, tension, and joint tenderness.

RELIEF FROM FIBROMYALGIA SYPTOMS

Fibromyalgia is a disorder involving chronic pain and fatigue throughout the body, often resulting in disturbed sleep and an impaired ability to concentrate. It can cause disruptions at work and at home. A study of the effects of hydrotherapy on fibromyalgia patients showed marked benefits. Following a course of hydrotherapy treatment, patients reported improvements in physical functionality, sleep quality, and the ability to do their jobs, accompanied by a reduction in pain intensity, fatigue, stiffness, anxiety, and depression.

RELIEF FROM LOWER BACK PAIN

According to one estimate, 80% of all Americans will suffer from lower back pain at some point. It can make performing everyday activities a difficult and painful challenge. In multiple studies, people living with chronic back pain who underwent hydrotherapy treatment, either on its own or in combination with other treatments, saw a reduction in their symptoms. While these studies do indicate the positive effects of hydrotherapy, they do not replace the advice of a doctor.

DECREASED ANXIETY AND STRESS

Time spent in a hot tub encourages stress-free relaxation. Before you leave for work in the

morning, soaking in your spa for fifteen or twenty minutes can help you begin your day feeling rested and focused. At night, it can help you unwind and leave the stresses of the day behind you. Controlled studies have shown that the use of hydrotherapy can lead to an improved psychological and emotional state.

BETTER SLEEP

Lack of sleep can increase feelings of stress and anxiety reducing your ability to be productive. This can become a vicious cycle, as these same negative feelings can cause or aggravate many sleep disorders. Using your hot tub on a regular basis can break that cycle and help you get to sleep.

EASES SORE MUSCLES

The hot water and massage jets in a hot tub release tension and knead the toxins from your muscle fibers. Buoyancy takes the pressure off your legs, feet and back, helping you work out the knots. Regular soaks in your spa can improve your health and overall well-being. In order to fully experience these benefits without added stress, it’s important to invest in a quality, worry-free hot tub that you can enjoy for years to come.

Working with an experienced Realtor can help you identify the best strategies to boost your home’s appeal — and it often starts with a few smart, valuedriven updates. Here are four impactful ways to make your home more marketable before it hits the market:

REFRESH WITH A CLEAN PAINT PALETTE

One of the easiest and most cost-effective ways to transform a space is with a fresh coat of paint. Light, neutral tones like soft taupe, creamy beige, or warm grays instantly make a room feel brighter and more inviting. Plus, a neutral backdrop helps potential buyers visualize their own style in the space — a major selling point.

You don’t need a full renovation to give

your home a modern touch. Swapping out outdated countertops and light fixtures can create an instant wow factor. Stick to clean, timeless finishes like quartz, brushed nickel, or matte black to appeal to a wide range of tastes.

FOCUS ON HIGH-IMPACT SPACES

Kitchens and bathrooms often make or break a sale. If a complete remodel isn’t in the cards, consider budget-friendly updates like replacing cabinet hardware, refinishing surfaces, or adding fresh grout. These minor improvements can refresh the space and help you recoup your investment.

STAY CURRENT WITH DESIGN TRENDS

Buyers are paying attention to what’s in style — both online and during in-person showings. Simple changes like incorporating modern finishes, swapping dated décor, or adding curated staging touches can make your home stand out in a competitive market. A Realtor with local market expertise can
