THERE ARE LESSONS. AND THERE ARE LIFE LESSONS.

WE TEACH BOTH. Going to college should teach you about more than what you learn in books and in the classroom. At Nova Southeastern University, one of our core values is community. Our students take that value to heart, and have learned so much about themselves and others in the process.

Imagine being able to take your child to get hearing and balance, vision, speech-language, and dental health assessments all in one day… for FREE. A job well done! DHL employees after the playground demolition at Broward Partnership

W

ho says volunteering is tough? Not only does lending your time to a good cause help people, it can be a lot of fun too. That is exactly what we encountered on Sept. 11 – National Day of Service and Remembrance – as we headed over to Broward Partnership and saw the team from DHL hard at work. This superhero team of DHL employees has been volunteering there for 3 years and this year they used their powers to dismantle an old playground so a newer, more fabulous one can replace it (generously donated by the Greater Fort Lauderdale Board of Realtors Foundation). Call it a playground makeover for the homeless children who count on this play area to swing, slide and laugh.

Ask about our On-the-Water Training Seminar Let us help you increase your boating knowledge.

Learn about:

• Seamanship • Marine radio • Buoys • Personal flotation devices • Personal watercraft • Boat handling • Docking • Anchoring

10

The DHL group also donated 140 pairs of new socks and underwear for the kids. Wow!

• Florida & federal boating laws • Knots and line handling • Trailering • Boat types and terminology • Adverse conditions and much more!

Fulfills requirement for your State of Florida “Boating Safety Education” I.D. Card. This is a comprehensive 7-week course.

Only course in South Florida to teach introduction to charting and navigation.

The rain and mud did not deter this group, who took apart the equipment screw by screw, swung sledge hammers to remove the stakes in the ground, took down fencing – you name it. There was no stone unturned. Literally! By the end of the day, the volunteers were tired but everyone was happy. They genuinely wanted to be there to better their community and themselves by doing something special for the kids living at the Homeless Assistance Center.

Sun Sentinel’s Marcia Quallo-Lange, Stacy Ostrau and Sharon McCaslin join DHL employees taking apart the slide

The selfless act of volunteering is fulfilling and easier than most people think. In this issue, we have compiled a list of opportunities to get you started. The world can change if each of us does even just a little toward making things better. So go ahead, jump in and be part of the solution. To quote playwright John Heywood, “Many hands make light work.”

Even though we maintain our health and looks through diet and exercise, we are genetically predisposed to store fat in the belly, hips and thighs. And its stubborn fat that stays put, no matter how much we diet or exercise. We now have a safe, FDA cleared, new non-invasive weapon on the war against fat: COOLSCULPTING !!

Thursday, September 18, 2014

Coolsculpting is a new technology developed by Harvard scientists that is safe and literally freezes your fat cells away permanently. This non-invasive device is the only non-surgical device FDA cleared to kill your fat cells that are then eliminated from the body.

TUBBORN FAT – WE ALL HAVE IT !

The procedure is done in office, in one treatment, without surgery, needles, diet, exercise, pills or downtime. When the treatment is done you simply get up and can go back to work, or do anything else you want to do.

LIPOSUCTION SURGERY VS COOLSCULPTING

Many of us do not want surgical liposuction. So, we remain forever frustrated by our inability to reduce our waist, hips and thighs. Coolsculpting is just the solution you have been waiting for.

One factor that separates surgical liposuction from all the other methods of fat reduction, is that the fat cells are removed from the body. Coolsculpting procedure works just like liposuction, because of its ability to permanently eliminate the fat cells. There are a variety of machines on the market today that shrink the fat cells but do not eliminate them. These cells remain in the body.

RESULTS

FDA cleared device kills fat cells.

Coolsculpting is a safe and highly effective method to eliminate that “stubborn fat.” It freezes only fat cells, so it will not affect healthy cells. The results look natural and smooth, unlike liposuction surgery, which may be uneven and lumpy. Some see results from Coolsculpting in as few as a couple of weeks with more dramatic results occurring between one to two months. For a free consultation call 954-440-1825.

en Torrent, 52, of Fort Lauderdale first learned about South Florida Wildlife Center – where he has volunteered for seven years – by bringing injured wildlife to the center. When he started, he would volunteer in any area that needed assistance and within the last three years has been working exclusively with the vet staff in clinic area. “I’ve learned how to be far more humble and patient. The goal is to help each and every animal coming to the center. All of the employees (doctors, technicians, interns and externs) are always gracious with their time, knowledge and experience to help each and every volunteer accomplish the very best for all the animals.” Torrent’s favorite part: Experiencing the release of an animal after it’s been nurtured back to health.

“It is easy to find reasons why you don’t have time to volunteer in the community until you make the time. It is a gratifying and amazing feeling to see the impact that can be made on someone’s life by volunteering just a small portion of my free time. A little goes a long way.”

Kelley makes home repairs that provide safer and healthier living environments for elderly or disabled homeowners. He learned about the opportunity through his employer – Current Builders, a Pompano Beach-based general contractor – and was drawn to the idea of being able to help improve the lives of those living in the same community as him.

Not many of us can say that every time we walk into a room we are greeted by clapping, hugs and cheering, even if it is after having just left the area and returning 15 minutes later. The amount of joy the clients bring to my life can’t be described - I will never feel a greater love or acceptance!”

on Michael Kleiner, 39, of Fort Lauderdale volunteers at the FLITE Center where he teaches the mathematics component for students who are preparing to take their GED. Kleiner decided the best fit for his volunteerism would be in an environment where he could help students achieve academic goals and also help them understand the importance of education, stressing that to equip oneself with necessary academic tools is a key to success in the world. “I have learned to respect the students for whom they are as individuals, and not judge them for their individual shortcomings, personally or academically. I demand respect from the students, and in turn, I reciprocate the same level of respect back to them. Respect is something that one must earn, particularly from my group of students.” The students he works with have been in the child welfare system, therefore have had multiple educational challenges due to the abuse, abandonment and neglect they have experienced. “…volunteering becomes a rewarding experience when I teach a student(s) a concept and he/she becomes enthusiastic about understanding it. It is a very fulfilling feeling to leave the classroom on any given day, knowing that volunteering my time has positively impacted the life of someone else.”

ustis Harrilal, 17, of Miramar volunteers with several organizations: HandsOn Broward, Feeding South Florida, Miami Rescue Mission and Jubilee Center South Broward. In December 2010, Harrilal was accepted as a Student Ambassador to People-to-People International. The organization is a nonprofit agency that promotes humanitarian activities around the world. As part of his community engagement, he had to volunteer with a local nonprofit agency that would prepare him for an international service learning experience. His initial volunteer assignment was in January 2011 where he worked as a Food Sorter at Feeding South Florida’s (FSF) main warehouse. This assignment exposed him to their network of partner agencies that depended upon FSF for their food subsidies. After volunteering for a few weeks at FSF, he decided to visit a homeless shelter that was one of their partner agencies:“When I arrived at the homeless shelter, I was shocked and distressed by the hundreds of people who were waiting for the opportunity of a hot meal. I could not believe that I saw: senior citizens, pregnant women and veterans waiting for food, it was just overwhelming. This experience just consumed me and I felt compelled to help even more, which is why I joined HandsOn Broward (HOB). Through my relationship with HOB, I was able to extend my volunteer service commitment to my community. I became trained as a HOB Project Leader and I immediately started to create my own projects that would benefit agencies who served the homeless and hungry.” As a volunteer, he spends a lot of time collecting and sorting donated food, clothes and toiletry items for the homeless and food insecure in the community. “I have a great network of family and friends that support the work that I do. There is no collection too small or too big that I will not drive and pickup for these organizations.” “Volunteering has taught me to be grateful for everything that I have in my life. I meet people who have absolutely nothing - sometimes not even a family member or a friend. Yet somehow, they always find a way to be grateful for any help or support you can share. I always try to emulate their gratefulness when I interact with people.” Harrilal’s favorite volunteer experiences involve group projects, which is why he created a special group of family and friends called TeamJustis. “Every quarter we pick a project that suits all ages and skillsets - this way everyone gets to participate and you can maximize everyone’s talents. I have an aunt that suffers from vertigo, which affects her vision, however she enjoys managing the sign-in sheets, the paperwork and the snack table for our projects. You can guarantee that when she hands you your name tag, your name is usually spelled differently on every project; however, it does not matter because her job is equally as important as everyone else on our team is. We’re always excited to learn our new names - it just makes the project more fun!”

Laser Therapy is a scientifically proven way to reduce pain and inflammation.

Sun Sentinel

Why does it work?

Leslie, when I first arrived at Advanced Laser Therapy my left shoulder felt like it was on fire and my golf game was nonexistent. I had struggled with pain for several years due to two rotator cuff tears. I tried several months of physical therapy to no good effect. After your laser treatments I was able to return to golf. I have gone from a reluctant golfer to pretty darn good again. And that is amazing! Last week I played three days in a row and I was PAIN FREE. I would have never believed something so noninvasive could be so effective!
