season

note from the Society Scene team

S

ure, summer was fun. But with the humidity fading, south Floridians know that the best part of the year is on the horizon. The Society Scene team has been preparing for the cooler temps for the last few weeks by compiling a comprehensive guide for your upcoming philanthropic events season. And for this year’s Season Preview, we put the spotlight on some of our favorite event details.

Special Marketing Section

To kickoff the issue, we profiled local philanthropists and event chairs, having them share their favorite part of event season (pages 10-11). Getting us in the mood for fabulous fundraising, Argentine designer Marcelo Giacobbe sketched this floor-length stunner for the cover of this year’s issue. The cover gown is again photographed for an inside feature (pages 14-15) where he’s outlined style suggestions for another extraordinary season of giving back. On page 18 we spark up our creative juices on some DIY ideas to jazz up your next event. Asking ourselves: D I whY pay someone to do it when you can do it better and cheaper?! And, as with every Season Preview, we’ve done the planning so you can fill your social calendars with event listings for every occasion – starting on page 25.

8

Sun Sentinel

Thursday, October 23, 2014

The issue wraps with eight pages of event photos to pique your visual interest and make sure you’re as excited as we are about another season of philanthropic entertainment.

So don your chiffon and bow ties and let’s sashay through season!

vent season is a special time of year for me in Fort Lauderdale. One of my favorite events is the gala at the Museum of Discovery and Science. The venue is beautiful and interesting and lends itself to a wonderful gathering. Always well attended, it gives me a chance to see many people I have not seen since the beginning of the summer, and catch up on all the fun travels that they have had.

Laser Therapy is a scientifically proven way to reduce pain and inflammation.

Leslie, when I first arrived at Advanced Laser Therapy my left shoulder felt like it was on fire and my golf game was nonexistent. I had struggled with pain for several years due to two rotator cuff tears. I tried several months of physical therapy to no good effect. After your laser treatments I was able to return to golf. I have gone from a reluctant golfer to pretty darn good again. And that is amazing! Last week I played three days in a row and I was PAIN FREE. I would have never believed something so noninvasive could be so effective!

Reflections On 15 Years Of Giving…

“T

he Broward Sheriff ’s Office is the strong and proud family it is, thanks in part from the support we receive from the Sheriff ’s Foundation of Broward County,” Sheriff Scott Israel said. Sheriff Israel added that “… law-enforcement officers put their lives on the line each and every day and should tragedy strike, it is comforting to know that the Foundation is ready to offer financial support for their families.” The Foundation provides moral and financial support to families of those who lost their lives in the line of duty.

Summer Social At The Historic Needham Estate… Jumpstart for 4th Annual Sheriff ’s Cup Golf Tournament

A Summer Social took place recently at The Historic Needham Estate, the home of the Foundation’s Chairman, H. Drew Romanovitz, Esq. and his wife Sandy. It was an opportunity to thank sponsors of the 3rd Annual Sheriff ’s Cup Golf Tournament and to secure new sponsors for the 4th Annual Tournament, planned for Monday, April 13, 2015 at the Weston Hills Country Club. Lt. Robert Furman is co-chairing the Tournament, along with Tim Langelier and Captain Kevin Granville. Billed as the “3 C’s”; camaraderie, competition & charity, the tournament is one of the Foundation’s major fundraisers.

Sheriff Foundation Will Brighten Dozens of Kids… Shopping With The Sheriff at Walmart!

Broward Sheriff Scott Israel will join about 50 very lucky at-risk youngsters in December, participating in the 16th Annual “Shop With The Sheriff ” event where each young person will receive a $100.00 gift certificate! The Youth and Neighborhood Services Division and the Sheriff ’s School Resource Deputies work together so that the holidays are a joyous time. Walmart supports the event with a monetary donation that is used to cover any overage in spending that occurs.

“We wanted to reflect on some of the highlights of projects undertaken by the Foundation, to let the community know what we do. We also fund programs of the Broward Sheriff ’s Office, programs enhancing public safety and improving the quality of life for all citizens in Broward County. We welcome donations and new members and will continue to make grants that impact our community,” said Patricia Du Mont, the Vice Chair of the Foundation.

AutoNation Presents the Royal Dames of Cancer Research, Inc. 45th Anniversary Tiara Ball “Dames at Sea” “Riding the Waves for a Cancer Cure”

Carole Nugent, Royal Dames President, Jacqueline Travisano, Tiara Ball Chairwoman, Alice Jackson, Honoree and Carol Harrison, Platinum Sponsor

The Tiara Ball will honor Alice Lucia Jackson, a cancer survivor, accomplished businesswoman and philanthropist, who along with her husband Mike Jackson, chairman and CEO of AutoNation, has supported a wide range of community organizations. “Through my role at Nova Southeastern University and as a strong advocate for advancing university research, the mission of the Royal Dames is near and dear to my heart,” said Travisano. “I am proud to serve as chair of this longstanding, prestigious event and look forward to celebrating Mrs. Jackson and her dedication to find better treatments and cures for cancer.”

The theme of the black-tie gala is “Dames at Sea” Riding the Waves for a Cancer Cure” and ties in with the Royal Dames mission to raise funds for the study and research of cancer at the Nova Southeastern University Rumbaugh-Goodwin Institute for Cancer Research, Inc. in Broward County, FL. Proceeds from the Tiara Ball benefit the Institute, which focuses on research as well as anti-cancer drug discovery and screening. Executive Director of the Institute, Appu Rathinavelu, Ph.D., and his team hold several patents for developing drugs designed to treat breast, ovarian, prostate, lung and colorectal cancers.

Since it’s inception in 1969, head-turning tiaras, fabulous gowns, and dashing tuxedos have become the signature attire for this elegant evening that begins with a Roederer Estate champagne and cocktail reception followed by dinner and dancing to the sound of Beth and Command Performance.

Admission for the Tiara Ball is $275 per person. For information on how you can support the Tiara Ball, please call us at 954-629-0209, e-mail rlmnll@aol.com or visit our web site at www.royaldames.org.

Since 1991, through the Sun Sentinel Children’s Fund, a McCormick Foundation Fund, more than $38.5 million has been granted to local nonprofit agencies that help local children and families in need. With no administration fees and a 50% match on every contribution from the McCormick Foundation, the Children’s Fund gives at-risk kids a better chance at a brighter future. You give. It’s matched.
