season

note from the Society Scene team

S

ure, summer was fun. But with the humidity fading, south Floridians know that the best part of the year is on the horizon. The Society Scene team has been preparing for the cooler temps for the last few weeks by compiling a comprehensive guide for your upcoming philanthropic events season. And for this year’s Season Preview, we put the spotlight on some of our favorite event details.

Special Marketing Section

To kickoff the issue, we profiled local philanthropists and event chairs, having them share their favorite part of event season (pages 10-11). Getting us in the mood for fabulous fundraising, Argentine designer Marcelo Giacobbe sketched this floor-length stunner for the cover of this year’s issue. The cover gown is again photographed for an inside feature (pages 14-15) where he’s outlined style suggestions for another extraordinary season of giving back. On page 18 we spark up our creative juices on some DIY ideas to jazz up your next event. Asking ourselves: D I whY pay someone to do it when you can do it better and cheaper?! And, as with every Season Preview, we’ve done the planning so you can fill your social calendars with event listings for every occasion – starting on page 23.

Thursday, October 23, 2014

The issue wraps with eight pages of event photos to pique your visual interest and make sure you’re as excited as we are about another season of philanthropic entertainment.

So don your chiffon and bow ties and let’s sashay through season!

he Palm Beach Zoo & Conservation Society’s annual ‘Dinner Dance’ is one of the favored events of the social season, and it’s always so festive. One of the things I especially enjoy is the cocktail hour, when the Zoo’s animal ambassadors and their handlers make an appearance and interact with the guests. These animals serve as a wonderful reminder of the importance of being human advocates and stewards of majestic creatures great and small.

ur favorite part of the season is getting to be with all of our friends as we come together in support of causes and organizations that serve our community. One of the most important causes we support is the Alpert Jewish Family & Children’s Service. As honorees of this year’s AJFCS ‘Advocates of the Year’ event, we are thrilled to have this opportunity to inform the community of the important work done by this agency, which helps people during challenging times in their lives.

f course, what I love most about season is the ‘Palm Beach Wine Auction.’ But the fact is, event season is about what people do for our community. People here have such passion for their causes, and for me, it’s children’s arts education at the Kravis Center.

ne of the things I enjoy about the Palm Beach social season is the diversity of events. In addition to traditional cocktail receptions and galas, there are numerous events that meld the best of both worlds - socializing with the opportunity to educate. Such is the case with the Ryan Licht Sang Bipolar Foundation’s Second Annual Medical Briefing Luncheon on January 14th at Mar a Lago. I, along with my co-chairwomen, feel honored to host this event that helps raise awareness and funds for critical research. -Benoit

This special evening – one of my favorites – provides an opportunity to for us to socialize with the men and women in blue, as well as raise needed funds for the Palm Beach Police Department, to which we all owe a debt of gratitude for keeping us safe and allowing us to enjoy a wonderful quality of life in Palm Beach.

“We know a young man here who has never been to a dentist in his life,” said Jill Ross, RN, a Faith Community Nurse who volunteers her time to work with the homeless. “He needs to see one and get some encouragement to make his dental health a part of his game plan for life.”

an appointment, bus passes are provided to them when available. “No day is the same,” noted Bernadette Macy, Program Administrator for the Interfaith Health and Wellness Program at Catholic Charities. “Sometimes, we see regular clients at the same site each month but every day there are new people, new stories. Often, our clients here need wound care; they need help getting their prescriptions for diabetes or hypertension. We never know who is going to visit us on the bus but the need is great.” What does this program of Catholic Charities desperately need right now? Dental services! Macy says the community is overwhelmed by the need for dental services, from cleanings, to fillings and even reconstructive care for young patients.

“We also need help underwriting little health and hygiene kits for the homeless. Basic kits with deodorant, comb, sunscreen, toothbrush, paste and soap, that sort of thing...” commented Macy. “We distribute them constantly but it would be great to receive some financial donations to help offset the cost.”

When a patient needs mental health services or even substance abuse assistance there are free community resources and support groups to refer them to. Catholic Charities works with the Lewis Homeless Resource Center, Comprehensive Alcoholism Rehabilitation Programs (CARP), Community Health Center and Foundcare (two local free health centers), County Health Department, and the Mental Health Association’s Peer Place – all to ensure no homeless person in need falls through the cracks. It’s clear that Catholic Charities addresses the health of the homeless with a lot of care and a lot of heart.

According to the Department of Children and Families, there are an estimated 1,500 homeless people in Palm Beach County.

Could you help bring a smile to a homeless person in Palm Beach County? Are you a dentist willing to see a patient or two pro bono? Or a dental hygienist who would donate your time, or do have dental supplies or equipment to donate? If you are a nurse or medical professional interested in Faith Community Nursing, please call Bernadette Macy, 561-345-2000 x256. Could you help donate hygiene kits for the homeless? Please send monetary donations to support this effort to: Development Office Catholic Charities Diocese of Palm Beach 9995 N Military Trail Palm Beach Gardens, FL 33410 P: 561-630-2695

Laser Therapy is a scientifically proven way to reduce pain and inflammation.

Sun Sentinel

Why does it work?

Leslie, when I first arrived at Advanced Laser Therapy my left shoulder felt like it was on fire and my golf game was nonexistent. I had struggled with pain for several years due to two rotator cuff tears. I tried several months of physical therapy to no good effect. After your laser treatments I was able to return to golf. I have gone from a reluctant golfer to pretty darn good again. And that is amazing! Last week I played three days in a row and I was PAIN FREE. I would have never believed something so noninvasive could be so effective!
