Bray calls for meeting with TII to discuss road safety on the N51 and N52
Cllr Mike Bray has called on Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) to meet with local councillors to discuss the spate of traffic accidents on the N51 and N52 in recent months. Cllr Bray had a motion passed at the October meeting of the Kells Municipal District calling on the TII to meet with local representatives to discuss the safety concerns along these roads.
“There has been a significant increase in the number of road traffic accidents on the N51 and N52 in recent months in particular in the Athboy and Rathmore areas,”he said “I have been made aware of at least seven accidents in August and September alone along the N51 in Athboy and Rathmore area.” “These have been relatively serious and resulted in the road being

closed for a period as a result.” “I have been contacted by many locals and road users who have expressed grave concern regarding the increase in incidents this year and particularly in recent months. Unfortunately, and very sadly, there have also been fatalities on these roads. "There was also a serious accident on the N52 near Balrath, Kells over the weekend and the community in this area have been campaigning and highlighting this for years.” Cllr Bray continued by saying “As a local Councillor what is frustrating is that as the N51 and N52 are national roads therefore the TII are the authority over these roads.” “As a result, they do not attend our meetings so local councillors cannot raise these concerns directly with
them on behalf of the local communities we represent.” “For instance, I previously had a motion calling on the TII to attend our local area meeting to discuss road safety concerns at Rathmore NS and they point blank refused to do so.” “Garda enforcement and driver behaviour are key elements of improving road safety, but the road authorities must work with Councillors to address these issues. Cllr Bray concluded by saying “I welcome that following my motion it has been confirmed that the recent spate of accidents have been included on the agenda for the upcoming Collision Prevention Programme meeting with An Gardai Síochána.” “However, I still believe the TII needs to address local councillors and hear the concerns of the local communities and road users in these areas, "
