Meath Toy Company

The co-founders of a Meath toy company have described their partnership with giants Mattel as a 'pinch me' moment as they bring their products to a wider world stage.

HoloToyz are now developing a new Augmented Reality (AR) range featuring Barbie and Hot Wheels products. Based near the historic Hill of Tara, the company brings characters and educational themes to life as3DanimationsthroughtheirkidSAFEcertified app.

Already working with household names like Nickelodeon's Paw Patrol, the company helps children bring their favourite characters to life in a way that’s both magical and meaningful.

HoloToyz products begin as physical toys, like jigsaws, stickers, magnetic cubes and books and are then brought to life using AR which offers children an engaging and interactive experience.

They have also developed educational books that allow children to read, listen to audio, and visually see stories come to life, encouraging multi-sensory learning.

Their products are available globally across Europe, the US, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand.

The couple's success began in lockdown when they gave an online presentation at a virtual toy

fair which led to a direct approach by Nickelodeon.

"That was an unbelievable moment for us," said Kate.

"We partnered with them and created our Paw Patrol range, which we are hugely excited about as Paw Patrol is one of the largest pre-school licenses in the world.”

"After showcasing at more toy fairs, we were introduced to the Mattel team through mutual industry contacts."

"Mattel is one of the most iconic brands in the world and it took a lot of hard work to win the licencebutthey'vebeenincrediblypositiveabout the quality and innovation in our work, which is really encouraging," added Declan.

"They have been amazing to deal with and we hope this is only the beginning.”

The new Barbie product range will include a magnetic dress-up set that comes to life through a HoloToyz app and children can mix and match over 100 outfit combinations and see Barbie appear in animated form, wearing their chosen styles.

ABarbiejigsaw, tattoosandstickerswillalsobe part of the range while the Hot Wheels products will include magnetic cubes, jigsaws, temporary tattoos and stickers, which come alive through the app using animation with sound, lights and movement. Continued on Page 10 Inside

Pub Offers Weekly Free

Buffet to Thank Customers

A Co Meath pub is rewarding people for a hard-working week by offering a free buffet each Friday.

The Round O in Navan reintroduced the free meal which had been on the menu on a weekly basis for years before Covid-19 closed the hospitality sector.

Now anyone can pop in and avail of the buffet from 5pm on a Friday as the pub aims to say thanks to its patrons for their support and well-done on getting through another working week.

Owner Mark Keenan says last Friday's dish of beef stew and mashed potatoes was snapped up by hungry customersatthebar, whichhas been in operation for over 50 years.

"We've been getting great feedback for the buffet. People think it is a great idea. It was originally intended for the

working person on their way home but everyone from mothersandgransarepopping in after working a hard week.”

"We are seeing a lot of single men coming in the door who may not have anyone at home to eat with so they may not bother cooking for themselves. This way, they are getting a nutritious meal on a Friday.”

"Westartat5o'clockuntilthe buffet runs out basically and

everything is cooked fresh that morning so it's not leftovers that we are giving out. The dish on offer will change weekly too.”

"A few people just couldn't believe it, they were expecting some kind of a catch," he laughed.

Mark says that although The Round O was offering the free buffet on a Friday for years, all pub owners have to think

outside the box to attract customers as the cost of living continues to rise.

"We are lucky that we are located in a big residential catchment area so a lot of our customers can have a pint and walk home easily but we get a huge amount of people who drive here from all over the county for our food.”

"The free buffet is just to say thanks to our customers who

have stayed loyal to us over the years."

The Round O is also gearing up to host 80s pop sensation Nik Kershaw in July and Mark admits that tickets have been flyingoutthedoor. "Wehaven't even really had to advertise it and already over half of the 1000 tickets have been sold for the outdoor gig."

Revellers attending that gig can expect to hear Nik Kershaw's hit songs such as 'Wouldn't it be Good' and The Riddle'

The Simple Gift That Changed Teatime for One Meath Family

For Meath local, Debbie Kiernan, finding the perfect gift for her mum, Patsy, wasn’t just about giving something nice, it was about giving something that would make her mum’s life easier and safer at home.

Patsy, who is turned 88 in March, has been struggling with arthritis in her hands and back for several years. One of the daily tasks that had become more difficult, and even risky, was something as simple as making a cup of tea.

“Mum has arthritis, and lately the power in her hands is gone,” says Debbie. “It was getting harder for her to lift and pour from her old kettle. I could see her hand shaking with the weight of it, and I was worried she’d burn herself.”

Scrolling online, Debbie came across the Uccello Kettle on Instagram and instantly thought it could be the answer.

“It’s specially designed so you don’t have to lift it. You just tip it forward, and it pours, no strain on your hands,” she explains.

Debbie decided to give it to her mum as a gift, and it’s quickly become one of Patsy’s favourite things in the kitchen.

“When I first gave it to her, she said, ‘What’s that?’” Debbie laughs. “But

once I showed her how it worked, she thought it was brilliant. She called it a game changer and now says she wouldn’t be without it.”

For Patsy, the new kettle has taken away the fear and frustration that came with using her old one.

“I didn’t know what it was at first,” Patsy recalls. “But when Debbie explained it to me, I thought, ‘My God, it’s brilliant!’ I don’t have the power to

lift things anymore, and this has made it so much easier. I’m not afraid to use it at all.”

Patsy herself can now enjoy each and every cup of tea and now feels confident making them herself.

“If it went tomorrow, I’d go out and buy another one straight away,” she says. “I’ve already recommended it to other people. It’s ideal for any older person, without a doubt.”

Debbie says that knowing her mum is safe when using the kettle brings her peace of mind.

“We’re a big family, there are eight of us, and Mam’s always showing it off when people come over,” she says.

“My sister Lorraine usually fills it for her in the morning, but if she’s not there, Mam just uses a jug to fill it herself. It’s no bother for her at all.”

For any occasion, Debbie says she’s glad she found something both practical and meaningful to give her mum.

“She has everything she needs, but this was perfect. It wasn’t just another gift, t’s made a real difference,” she says. “And knowing she’s safe and comfortable means everything to me.”

For anyone looking for the ideal gift for an elderly relative, Debbie says the Uccello Kettle is a great option.

“If you’ve got an elderly mum who’s struggling with things like lifting a kettle, this makes life so much easier. Mam loves hers, and I’d recommend it to anyone.”

Deputy Darren O’Rourke - Duleek to Staleen Water Mains Upgrade Must Be Delivered

Sinn Féin TD for Meath East, DarrenO’Rourke, hascalledfor urgent action to address the ongoing water outages affecting residents and businesses in Duleek, Donore and surrounding areas due to the crumbling water mains between Duleek and Staleen.

He has demanded that Government-supporting TDs in Meath East ensure Uisce Éireann prioritises a water mains upgrade on this section and is adequately funded to do so. In the meantime, he says, Uisce Éireann must be held to account for all-too-regular outages.

Highlighting the significant impact of repeated water outages on the local community, Teachta O'Rourke said “Businesses and households are bearing the brunt of these failures. They are an all-too-regular occurrence, with the most recent outage on St. Patrick's Day, just 10 days after the previous outage.”

“This is not just an inconvenience, itiscausingreal

disruption to daily life and economic activity.”

He continued "We know there is investment in the DuleektoNavanlineandthatis welcome, but that is doing nothing to address these outages.”

“The water mains between Duleek and Staleen must be fully upgraded, but there is no commitment at all from government on this. It is clear the 'sticking plaster' approach is not working. The whole lengthofmainspipelineshould be replaced but this is not on theagenda.Thathastochange.”

"IamcallingonGovernmentsupporting TDs in Meath EastDeputies McEntee, Byrne and Toole to take immediate steps to ensure that Uisce Éireann is directed to prioritise this project and fully funded to deliver it without delay. People cannot wait any longer. They are entitled to a reliable and clean water supply.”

"In addition, I am calling on the Government to enact Sinn Féin’s Water Services (No.2)(Amendment) Bill 2024 tostrengthenoversightofUisce Éireann. Our bill will be reintroduced to the Dáil in the coming days and would ensure Uisce Éireann properly communicates with and supports households and businesses during water outages. The Government should enact this bill without delay.”

Teachta O’Rourke concluded by saying "The people of Duleek, Donore and surrounding areas deserve reliable water services. It’s time for action, not excuses."

Although technology plays a keyrole,DeclanandKatestress that their focus is on physical play first. “We sell real toy and the app is free,” explains Declan.

“Children start by building or solving something themselves, and then the AR adds a layer of excitement. Watching their sticker or jigsaw come to life is mind-blowing for them."

The pair are also passionate about using technology in a responsible way.

“We’re parents first,” says Kate. “When we started this, our children were four and six years old. We could see how drawntheyweretotechnology, and we didn’t want to demonise it.”

“The problem isn’t the device, it’s the content. As adults, we call it technology but all kids really see is animation in their world, which is magical for them.”

"That’s why the HoloToyz experience is designed to be safe, controlled, and ageappropriate."

“We’re not fans of social media being in the hands of young kids,” she continues.

“Webelievenochildunder16 should be on social media, and

even after that, accounts should only be created with verified ID, just like when setting up a bank account.”

"People need to be accountable for what they say

online. Other countries are starting to introduce stronger regulations, and we think it’s time we did the same.”

"Social media isn’t a safe playground for children.”

A Blow-In Put Back In His Place

Earlier in the week I was invited onto a radio show alongside John Mulligan of The Roscommon Herald. The topic for discussion was the phrase ‘blowin’and the connotations of its use in Ireland.

What spurned the discussion was a previous interviewee who had a negative experience of her blow-in from Dublin to Cavan. She found the neighbourliness lacking, and overall felt she wasn’t welcomed, experiencing Cavan people as reserved and unwilling to engage with a perceived outsider.

It got me thinking of my own blowin status; and given the show was ‘live’I’m not sure I articulated my experience very well. Thus, I thought I’d write it here with the benefit of reflection.

I’d describe myself more a ‘blowback’rather than a ‘blow-in.’In fact, I’m a triple ‘blower.’I first blew in with my Cavan born parent’s in the late seventies. After school in Cavan and college in Dublin, I blew away to London in 1989, then blew back to Cavan in 2019.

I returned the same, but different. I felt the same inside, yet outwardly looked very different from the lad

who blew away in the late 80s. I’d say the reverse was true of Cavan Town, outwardly it looked fresher, younger; and with a multi-cultural populace similar to the city I’d left rather than the town I’d returned to. Yet as I settled back in I felt the Cavan heart and soul remained the same. Friends and family welcomed me warmly; and I rediscovered landscapes from my youth that re-rooted me back to the place of my past.

But I quickly noticed something. Beyond friends and family I was looked at with a strange-eye by those who didn’t know me. ‘Who was this man who’s suddenly appeared, walking the roads wearing a constant cap and carrying a backpack?’I saw them think with their wary eyes. Not long after, an old friend who is forever mindful of, “What will people think?” called me to express her embarrassed concern for me.

I knew immediately she’d heard musings about the road walking blowin when she suggested, “Would you ever leave the backpack at home now and again?”

I replied with an emphatic, “No, why should I?” She dealt her card, “Gerard, people are talking about you as odd, they’ve even put a name on you.” I smiled, “What’re they calling

me?” She paused, before splurging, “Bobby Backpack, they’re calling you BOBBY BACKPACK!” I laughed heartily, loving my new moniker. I resolved to embrace the character bestowed upon me; and even thought it had the makings of a whimsical novel, titled: Bobby Backpack blows in.

There’s no doubt those who didn’t know me perceived me as an odd blow-in during the early months of my return. But I don’t thinks that’s necessarily a bad thing. As humans, we’re all naturally curious and questioning of the unfamiliar; and on the whole, this is especially true of Irish people.

I knew that to reassimilate into the wider Cavan community, I had to engage with the curious town-folk. So, I began with a polite smile and nod as I passed people. That eventually became a, “Hello.” The, “Hello,” becomes a, “Good morning,” and soon afterwards there’s the ‘stop’ and ‘inevitable’chat about the weather and more, which took away my stranger-status and placed me in their world.

The host of the radio show asked if the term ‘blow-in’is an Irish putdown? I suppose it is a sarcasm to put people in their place, albeit with a

smidgen of affection (over the years, some people have tried to put me down using far more colourful words than blow-in, trust me).

I recall my first week back home, I blew into a local café and experienced that moment wherein you feel the suspicious customers looking for signs of familiarity in the new face.

I got chatting to the proprietor, and through our friendly conversation I

Government’s Failure to Address Policing Numbers Putting People of Meath at Risk – Guirke

Sinn Féin TD for Meath West

Johnny Guirke has said that Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael’s failure to address policing numbers is leaving the people of Meath exposed and putting the community at risk

Commenting on figures presented in the Irish Independent today, Deputy Guirke said it was not good enough that stations to lose their serving Garda include Ballivor and Summerhill. All at a time of increase crime in these areas.

He added that Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael’s failure to address the problem of too few Gardaí to meet the needs of an increased population was a dereliction of duty, that the Minister Jim O’Callaghan must now tackle this issue seriously as a matter of urgency, and that this would only be done by increasingthetrainingcapacity of An Garda Síochána.

Teachta Guirke said “Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael’s failure to

address policing numbers is leaving the people of Meath exposed and putting the community at risk.”

“The lack of Gardaí has very serious consequences for our community in terms of deterring crime, investigating crimeandensuringthatpeople feel safe.”

“Successive Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael governments have failed to properly plan for and address this issue for more than a decade. This is a dereliction of duty, and communities right across the state are now paying the consequences.”

“Thereisaseriousproblemin terms of Garda visibility, particularly in terms of the lack of community Gardaí. Until there is a significant increase in the training capacity of An Garda Síochána, this problem will not be fixed.”

“From the figures presented today, we see that most of the stations that had a significant

increase in number of gardaí were in the Dublin region, while those that lost gardaí were outside of Dublin. Our community cannot be allowed to suffer because of the particular challenges in Dublin.”

Deputy Guirke concluded by commenting “Sinn Féin has

called for Garda numbers statewide to be increased to 16,000. Minister Jim O'Callaghan, as a matter of urgency, must put a plan in place to achieve this to ensure that every community has a sufficient amount of Gardaí assigned to local stations such as ours in Meath.”

saw her beginning to recognise me; she began asking questions. My every answer drew her closer to the light, until she finally had the light bulb moment, “I have ya, you’re the Smith from Jubilee Terrace, up beside Majo who had the cure of the stye!” she exclaimed, triumphantly. And in that moment I was no longer a blow-in, I was put firmly back in my place: a Cavan man, returned.

Have Your Garden Blooming This Summer

Gardening is both a rewarding hobby and a means to enhance the beauty and functionality of outdoor spaces.

As summer approaches, preparing your garden becomes essential to ensure it thrives during the warmer months. This guide delves into crucial aspects of getting your garden ready for summer and ensuring you get the most from your hard work.

THE IMPORTANCE OF WEEDING

Weeding is fundamental to maintaining a healthy garden. Weeds compete with desired plants for nutrients, water, and sunlight, potentially hindering their growth. Regular weeding prevents these unwanted plants from establishing and spreading.

Techniques such as mulching with organic materials can suppress weed growth by blocking sunlight and retaining soil moisture.

Additionally, maintaining healthy soil and mowing at optimal heights can shade out weed seeds, reducing their chances of germination.

However, it's worth noting that not all weeding is beneficial. Overzealous removal of all weeds can disrupt local ecosystems, as some weeds provide food and shelter for beneficial insects and birds.

Maintaining a balance by leaving certain areas slightly wild can support biodiversity

PREPARING FLOWERBEDS FOR SUMMER

Proper preparation of flowerbeds sets the stage for vibrant summer blooms. Begin by clearing existing weeds and debris. Loosen the soil to improve drainage and aeration, which facilitates

Incorporating organic matter, such as compost or aged manure, enriches the soil with essential nutrients. After planting, applying a layer of mulch helps retain moisture, suppress weeds, and regulate soil temperature .

PROPER LAWN CARE

A well-maintained lawn enhances the overall appearance of your garden. Regular mowing keeps the grass healthy and prevents it from becoming overgrown.

It's advisable to mow during cooler periods and avoid cutting the grass too short, especially during droughts, as longer blades shade the soil and reduce evaporation.

Utilizing a mulching mower can return nutrients to the soil, promoting a lush lawn.

SELECTING THE RIGHT PLANTS

Choosing plants suited to your garden's specific conditions is crucial. Consider factors such as soil type, sunlight exposure, and local climate. For instance, drought-resistant plants are ideal for areas with limited rainfall, while shadetolerant species thrive under tree canopies.

Testing your soil's pH can guide you in selecting plants that will flourish in your garden's environment .

REGULAR GARDEN MAINTENANCE

Consistent maintenance ensures your garden remains healthy and attractive.

Pruning overgrown plants encourages new growth and improves air circulation, reducing disease risk. Regularly inspect plants for signs of pests or diseases and address issues promptly.

Deadheading spent flowers promotes continuous blooming, while mulching conserves

These practices collectively contribute to a thriving garden . CHOOSING APPROPRIATE GARDEN FURNITURE AND FEATURES

Selecting suitable garden furniture and features enhances the functionality and aesthetic appeal of your outdoor space.

Consider durable materials that withstand weather conditions and complement your garden's style. Incorporating features like ponds or decorative elements can create focal points and support local wildlife.

Thoughtful placement and selection of these additions can transform your garden into a serene retreat.

STRATEGIC PLANNING AND REGULAR UPKEEP

Preparing your garden for summer involves a combination of strategic planning and regular upkeep.

By focusing on essential tasks such as weeding, soil preparation, appropriate plant selection, and consistent maintenance, you can cultivate a vibrant and inviting outdoor space.

Thoughtful integration of furniture and features further enhances the garden's appeal, providing a perfect setting for relaxation and enjoyment during the summer months.

Your Garden, Your Sanctuary: The Complete Guide to Rattan Furniture with Choice Stores

As the sun begins to stretch across Irish skies again, it’s time to start thinking about turning your garden into the oasis it deserves to be. Whether you have a patio, balcony, or sprawling lawn, one secret ingredient can transform your space from average to inviting: rattan garden furniture.

At Choice Stores, we believe in making the outdoors just as comfortable and stylish as the indoors. That’s why we’ve put together this ultimate guide to help you choose the perfect rattan garden furniture that’s durable, low-maintenance, and utterly charming.

Why Rattan? Beauty Meets

Durability

Did you know wicker furniture traces its roots back to ancient Egypt?

Rattan, a popular form of wicker, has stood the test of time for a reason. Modern rattan furniture (especially the synthetic type) is crafted with the unpredictable Irish weather in mind.

With UV protection and moisture resistance, synthetic rattan is a top performer, come rain, sun, or sudden hailstorm (you know how the Irish weather is!).

Choice Tip: Always opt for furniture with aluminium frames strong, rustresistant, and perfect for long-term outdoor use.

Light, Portable, and Built to Last One of the big perks of rattan garden furniture is its weight, or lack of it. Easy to move or store, you’ll love the flexibility it offers as you chase the summer sun or reorganise for a garden party.

And don’t worry about fragile parts; these sets are engineered to last.

Synthetic rattan stands up brilliantly against the elements and still looks gorgeous through the seasons.

Effortless to Clean, Easy to Love Spilled a little rosé? No panic!

Synthetic rattan is incredibly easy to clean. Just a broom and a damp cloth will do the trick.

For deeper cleans, even a gentle power wash works wonders.

Don't forget to check if your cushions are machine-washable— most of ours are!

Style That Speaks to Your Home

From classic countryside to sleek modern minimalism, rattan furniture blends seamlessly with a variety of home designs and aesthetics.

A 2022 CSO survey found that 71% of Irish adults with a garden spent time tending or maintaining it, showing how much care goes into outdoor spaces.

Rattan lets you elevate that space with flair and harmony. With sets available in neutral tones, soft greys, and earthy browns, our collections complement any outdoor vibe you’re dreaming up, especially our Lifestyle Living range.

150th Anniversary of Charles Stewart Parnell's Election As

An MP For Meath

This year is the 150th anniversary of Charles Stewart Parnell's election as an MP for Meath in 1875

ItwasMeathwhichlaunched Charles Stewart Parnell onto thepoliticalstagein1875when he was elected as Member of Parliament for the county

Born in 1846, at the height of the Great Famine, Parnell’s mother was the daughter of Admiral Stewart, who was known as Old Ironsides as he had fought the British in the Anglo-American War of 1812.

The execution of the Manchester Martyrs in 1867 was a turning point in Parnell’s life which set him in pursuit of cause of Irish nationalism.

In 1874 Charles Stewart Parnell persuaded his brother, John, to stand for election in Wicklowinhisplacebuthewas defeated. Charles then ran as a

candidate in the Co. Dublin constituency.

He financed his own campaign, which was one of the attractions of his candidature for the National Party. In this initial contest he appeared to be shy, awkward and a poor speaker. He was defeated.

John Martin, M.P. for Meath diedin1875andParnellsought the vacancy. Parnell visited Kells to see the Bishop of Meath, Dr. Nulty, who gave him his support.

Parnell canvassed in all the towns and villages of the county and was accompanied on many of these visits by the Kells Brass Band. A drum from this band which accompanied Parnell is said to be still in existence.

Parnell visited Navan, Kells, Duleek, Trim, Athboy, Longwood, Summerhill, Dunshaughlin and Rathcore.

J.L. Napper of Loughcrew was nominated as the Conservative candidate and J.T. Hinds from Trim stood as an independent HomeRuler.Parnelltoppedthe poll and bonfires blazed in celebration and the successful candidate was carried around Market Square, Trim in triumph.

In his maiden speech he declared that Ireland was not a geographical fragment of England but a nation in its own

right. Parnell made few contributions in relation to Meath but did ask questions about the rights of Roman Catholics members of the Meath Militia serving at Navan to attend Mass on holy days of obligation.

By 1879 Parnell, M.P. for Meath had become the leader of the Irish Home Rule Party. In that year Parnell’s success was greeted by a crowd of twenty two thousand supporters in Market Square, Navan and a banquet.

Parnell became heavily involved in the land reform, perhaps influenced initially by Bishop Nulty. Parnell advised tenant farmers to “keep a firm grip on their homesteads.” The Land League was formed in 1879 with Parnell as President, perhaps an unusual position for a Protestant landlord.

John Sweetman of Kells proposed Parnell for the position. Also on the League committee were Nicholas Ennis M.P, Claremount, Thomas Lynch P.P. Beauparc, Michael Tormey C.C. Beauparc, John Sweetman Kells and Robert H. Metge, Athlumney.

In 1880 Parnell was elected forthreeconstituencies,Meath, MayoandCorkandheselected to represent Cork. The following year Parnell was imprisoned in Kilmainham Jail

for his Land League activities.

TheladiesoftheNavanPolitical Prisoners’ Aid Society sent him a letter of support. Various tenant purchase acts were passedwhicheventuallysorted out the land problem.

Campaigning for Home Rule for Ireland Parnell succeeded in having a Home Rule Bill introduced into Parliament in 1886 but it was defeated by the Conservatives.

In 1887 a series of letters forged by the Meath journalist, Richard Pigott, were published in The Times of London linking Parnell to violence. When it emerged that Parnell was innocent he received a standing ovation in the House of Parliament and became known as the “uncrowned king of Ireland.”

News began to emerge that Parnell was being named in a divorce case between

In March 1891 Parnell visited Navanwherehewasgreetedby a large crowd. Travelling from Drogheda he was welcomed at the platforms at Duleek and Beauparc. Many of the local political bodies presented Parnell with addresses of support. On August 16 of that year Parnell addressed a meeting in Kells on his last visit to Meath. The Parnell garden at the Convent of Mercy commemorates this visit.

Many local bodies and people from all over the county attended Parnell’s funeral to Glasnevin Cemetery.

Parnell left behind a divided Meath and in the election of 1892 there was disputes and controversy which resulted in the elections having to be rerun the following year.

Parnell's brother, John Howard Parnell was narrowly elected Member of Parliament for South Meath in 1895 and served until 1900.

Many in Meath remained loyal to the uncrowned king as was seen by the attendance at the unveiling of the Parnell monument.

The statue was created by the most eminent sculptor of public monuments in the US, Augustus Saint-Gaudens, who appears to have given the statue of Parnell two overcoats.

M1Retail Park In Drogheda

If you have been uptotheM1 Retail Park in Drogheda recently, you have probably spotted the giant pink flamingos splashed across the wall outside Western Motors, they’re pretty hard to miss. But why flamingos?

Well, for starters, they are striking, their bold pink colour is guaranteed to lift your mood as you drive through the retail park. But there’s a little more to themthanjusttheirgoodlooks.

The flamingos are part of a clever nod to the new allelectric SUV from Skoda, the Elroq.

They tie into the brands ‘Be More Elroq’ global marketing campaign, createdbyaLondon creative agency, which centres aroundtheideathateverything in the world, including flamingos, hummingbirds and even chipmunks, can be a source of inspiration if you are curious enough.

The campaign brings this idea to life through a series of TV and video ads, where the narrator shares quirky facts about animals, each one cleverly linked to a feature of the Škoda Elroq. First up, there’s the chipmunk, casually sitting among a mountain of nuts, because believe it or not,

chipmunks can store up to 12 nuts in their cheeks at once. It’s a fun metaphor for the Elroq’s impressive storage capacity.

Then we meet the raccoons, whose eyes can see in the dark without dazzling their friends,

much like the Elroq’s advanced LED Matrix headlights, designed to light the road ahead without blinding other drivers.

And of course, there’s the hummingbird, capable of

sipping nectar faster than the narrator can even finish his sentence, a neat nod to the Elroq’s rapid battery charging.

But back to those flamingos.

The mural artist, Darrin from The Write Type, ensured their

presence outside Western Motors is eye-catching, but they represent something more.

Flamingos are known for their balance, grace, and striking individuality, qualities that tie perfectly into what the Škoda Elroq stands for.

Because this campaign isn’t just about showcasing a car’s features,it’saboutcapturingthe spirit of curiosity, innovation, and joy that defines the Škoda brand.

So next time you pass by those giant pink flamingos, you’ll know they’re not just there to brighten your day. They’re there to remind you to stay curious, be bold, and maybe even ……

As students adjust in order to find the best ways to study at home, the two main pieces of advice I have for you this month are timely. These are the benefits of rewritingyourownkeynotesandtesting yourself at home.

Reading through your textbook only is not an effective form of revision; we need to be clear on this.

I strongly believe you need to actively engage with a piece of text, and this involves making notes at the side, underlining in red or green, highlighting or maybe even just making markings on the page to signify what’s Important. Successful students constantly summarise notes into something manageable and run little tests at home to monitor their progress.

I will now detail the reasons why I believe having your own summaries and self-testing is guaranteed to improveyourgrades.Ialsowilldiscuss the importance of adding variety in your revision.

Keep re-writing Summaries

Re-writing your notes is a study method that has been tried and tested over many years and I feel it is one of the best. To recall information later, it

The Two Big S's for Students - Summaries and Self-Testing

Joe McCormack - ACE Solution Books

is vital that you make good notes and highlight core Information, both in class and during home revision. Rewriting these initial notes (later that day)copperfastenswhatyouthinkare they key elements of what you have noted.

Doing this is a really good way of getting facts to ‘stick’ and will help you learn faster. Rewriting notes in your own words is a short cut to understanding material on your course; as writing something down forces one to think more about the subject matter more, thereby increasing retention rates of that information.

The key to doing well in exams is adaptability and being able to think critically about topics in the exam hall.

If you can adjust to change, cope with the unseen poem or unusual Maths diagram, theexaminerwillviewyouas standing apart from the rest.

Your key notes should reflect you viewing a topic from all angles; finding holes in it, praising it, picking out the main points from it, seeing where it links with other topics and most importantly, evaluating its usefulness.

An insightful set of key notes have delivered excellent grades for thousands of my students over the years.

How to Self-Test Well

We are never sure we understand something until properly tested on it.

Am I correct? You don’t need to wait for class tests or mock exams to see how you are progressing in each

subject; you can examine yourself at home. You should start off by testing yourself on one full past exam question, ensuring you follow the time allowed. Eventually you can build up to sitting a full past paper under the time pressure of a real exam.

There is no substitute for doing past exam questions within an allocated time. The student who attempts one exam question a day (no matter how small it is) is very tuned in to whats requiredonceexamdayarrives.Atthis point, ask your class teacher to give you some extra class tests or unusual past exam questions so that you can try them under these conditions.

During exam revision times, it can be difficult to find a friend or family membertoquizyou, whichiswhyyou may need to do it yourself. Learn how to test yourself and do it in as many ways that you can.

These include setting questions, answering revision questions at the end of each chapter in your textbook or practising do-able past exam questions.

Quizzes are also a brilliant way of making sure that all the information you need for your exams has been completelycovered.Askyourfriendto write you a quiz; they may think of an angle on a topic that you won’t. Re-do last years’ class tests that your teacher set for you.

Your parents can help too by examining you on material you need to remember i.e. facts or bullet points. My own mother was extremely good atthis;helpingmeimproveinsubjects

Use Variety in your Revision Ongoingcreationofrevisioncardswill greatly enhance your learning in subjects. This type of revision is now very popular with students. Make revision posters, laminate them, and stick them in the shower, the bathroom, the kitchen; everywhere.

When writing revision cards, split thecardintwoandwriteshortphrases ononesideanditsexplanationinyour own words on the other. Colour code your quotes, dates, names, and theories.

Keep the colours consistent so that you will recognise them easily. Developing your own colour coding system for topics will help you recall information quicker. Find out what revision techniques work for you and repeat them.

Every year, I see former leaving certs passing on notes to their friends. This has some advantages, but there is no substitute for writing your own notes.

How US Tariffs Will Impact SMEs in Ireland

The recent imposition of US tariffs on select European goods has sparked concern among small and mediumsized enterprises (SMEs) in Ireland, particularly those involved in export-driven industries.

While large multinational corporations may be better positioned to absorb cost increases or shift production,

SMEs typically operate on tighter margins, making them more vulnerable to changes in trade policy.

Irish SMEs that export goods directly to the United States, especially in sectors like food, beverages, and manufacturing, may face immediate challenges. Increased tariffs can lead to higher prices for American consumers, potentially reducing demand for Irish products.

This is especially true for niche or premium goods such as artisan cheeses, whiskey, and specialized machinery, areas where many Irish SMEs have carved out a market.

Indirect effects are also a concern. Some SMEs supply components or services to larger firms that export to the US. Tariffs can disrupt supply chainsandresultinlowerorder

volumes, even if the SMEs aren’t exporting directly.

Additionally, uncertainty around trade policies can dampen investment confidence, making SMEs hesitant to expand or hire.

To mitigate these risks, Irish SMEs may need to diversify export markets, strengthen domestic sales channels, or explore trade opportunities within the EU or Asia.

Governmentsupport, suchas advisory services or financial aid through agencies like Enterprise Ireland, will be crucial in helping SMEs adapt to this evolving landscape.

It was reported in the Irish Times, The Economic and Social Research Institute (ESRI) has projected that US tariffs could lead to a 3.7% reduction in Ireland's GDP over the next five to seven years, equating to approximately €18.4 billion in lost trade.

Such a downturn would likely have a cascading effect on employment, as decreased economic activity often results in job losses.

Ultimately, resilience and agility will determine how well Ireland’s SMEs navigate the challenges posed by US tariffs.

Writing a summary of existing information switches your brain into content analysis mode and you will remember much more of the notes you write, compared to reading and trying to understand someone else’s.

Surround yourself with positive people in exam year. Without sounding harsh, sometimes you are better off without ‘friends’ that let you down. To quote the author Hans F. Hanson “People inspire you, or they drain you - pick them wisely”

Friendswhoarealwaysingoodform can really give you a lift. If your friends or boyfriend/girlfriend aren’t supportive of your work and aren’t giving you room to prepare properly for your exams, it may be a warning sign of where the relationship is going down the line.

The opposite can also be true. In this regard, every day is a school day.

Widening the Office Gene Pool Benefits Of A User Friendly Website for Business

There’s always a bit of jeopardy when someone new joins the office.

Will they fit in? Will they respect the milk buying rota? Will they be capable of removing paper jams in the printer? Widening the work gene pool brings as much risk as it does opportunity.

A touch of the exotic can be very exciting, such as welcoming a protestant or a teetotaller into the ranks, but novelty aside, you still want someone you can have the craic with.

In recent weeks our workplace family has gained a new member. As a naturally insecure person, I am never as on top of my game as when I think someone’s watching. As a result, since the new arrival landed, I’ve been mostly marching theatrically from one office to another carrying files and saying things like “I’m going to need this by close of businesses today”. I never need anything by close of business any day. Also, I’m a naturally lazy person, so will soon grow tired of this embarrassing need to impress.

WhileI’vebeenpretendingto be very important and clever,

I’ve also been subtlety trying to get the measure of the new recruit.

First impressions were that he was much younger than the rest of us, a lovely lad and a hard worker. This is going to be fine I thought. Welcome to the family young lad, and fair play to you for fixing the printer. Then I started to spot some tell-tale signs. There was talk of going to the gym before work. Mental Health was spoken about, and excuse the pun, withoutacareintheworld. The milk in the fridge now had added protein. And then, the most damning evidence of all, I realised my shiny new colleague was taking a full lunch break, every day!

It was as plain as day; we had a millennial on our hands. Naturally I have met members of this tribe before. My youngest sister is one, I’m prettysuretheyoungestoneon Dragons Den is one and if you ever visited a farmers’ market which only sells candles, you’ll have seen loads of them yourself.

As a sprightly 47-year-old, I am of the generation who was told by our parents to make sure you mind that job. Millennials are different and I am in awe of them.

While people my age idly wonder which will come first, being found out by the powers that be or keeling over the desk with a stress induced heart attack, this younger cohort are full of positivity and joy. They take their full holiday allowance. They have confidenceinthemselvesand,I don’t want to sound too American here, they have selfworth.

FairplaytothemIsay.Yes,it’s immensely irritating to go to yet another one of their barn weddings with their dog as their groom’s man but let them off.

Let them have their mindfulness weekends. Good luck to them and their IPA beers and single origin coffee. Let them live on Instagram. It’s not live they will ever own their own home.
