Meath Students Hailed for Persuasion Skills in International Debating Competition in Paris

STUDENTS from Eureka Secondary School in Meath have been praised for their high skills of persuasion by France’s Minister for Industry and Energy,RolandLescure.

Minister Lescure and H.E.NiallBurgess,Ambassador of Ireland to France, ledadistinguishedteamof Irish and French judges drawn from the worlds of media, politics, business and academia, as part of the second annual Wolfe Tone Debate Tournament held in Paris to coincide with La Semaine de l’Irlande*,orIrelandWeek.

Thirty students from Eureka Secondary School in Kells, County Meath, Ireland, eleven students from Ecole Jeannine Manuel and thirty-three students from Massillon Secondary School aged between twelve and eighteen, took part in the competition, which was held

on Saturday March 16th at the historic Ecole MassilloninParis.

MinisterforIndustryand Energy, Roland Lescure, praised the participants for their skills in persuasion, teamwork and their courage. “Please keep going,” Minister Lescure told the students. “As politicians, we all have something to learn from your generation, your care for the issues, the environment, each other and how carefully you listened to eachother.”

Opening the debates, Ambassador Burgess told the Irish and French students that they were continuing in the footsteps of TheodoreWolfeTone, who was “the first Ambassador ofIrelandtoFrance.”

Wolfe Tone (1763-1798), oneofthefoundingfathers of Irish nationalism, embodied the links between Ireland and France at the

timeoftheFrenchRevolution.

“Critical conversations have occurred in Paris between the Irish and the Frenchsincethe15thcentury at the Irish College and elsewhere,” said Ambassador Burgess. “We haveagreatsharedhistory in part thanks to these ongoing conversations. You

are continuing a great tradition of debate between friends and neighbours in Europe.”

Divided by age group, the students debated motions including, “Should graffiti be decriminalized?”, “Are we looking forward to hosting the Olympic Games in Paris?” and “Is it desirable to define yourself solely by yourwork?”

“As a founding member of the Wolfe Tone debate tournament, Eureka Secondary School students are delighted to travel to Paris and engage in great debates on contemporary topics with their French peers,” said John Lynn, head of debating at Eureka.

MeathnativeMaeveJennings, coach with the Massillon Debate Club in Paris, said the debates were an essential exercise inthetrainingoffuturecit-

izens. “The practice of debateinvolvesanexchange, an effort to convince others, whichmakesitdistinct from eloquence courses, which are about oratory in its purest form,” said Ms Jennings.

“Beforedebatersareable to formulate an intelligent rebuttaltotheiropponent, they must be able to hear theopposingpointofview and identify the strongest and weakest part of their argument. This is an essential exercise in the trainingoffuturecitizens–particularly in these times ofpolarization.”

The2024WolfeToneDebate Tournament was organized with the support of the Embassy of Ireland inFrance,EvershedsSutherland’s law offices in Dublin and Paris; Shakespeare and Companybookstore,TenBelles Bakery and Tourism Ireland.

Walk of Fame for Meath Hollywood Stars

CLLR MIKE BRAY has called for the establishment of a walk of fame in Meath to commemorate the five Hollywood Stars fromMeathontheoriginal HollywoodWalkofFame.

Of the 13 Irish movie stars recognised on Hollywood Boulevard five of them are of Meath heritage. Maureen O'Hara who’s father hailed from Kells, Pierce Brosnan who wasborninNavanandthe Moore Brothers from the villageofFordstown(Matt, Tom,andOwen)

“InCo.Meathweareina unique position as five of the thirteen Irish people who have stars in HollywoodarefromMeathfamilies,"saidCllrBray.

“I believe we need to recognise and celebrate the fame and achievements of these five children of Meath.” “I am from Fordstown and we are very proud of the three Moore Brothers who left Ireland in the 1880s and went on to star in over 600 movies between them. However, most people outside of Fordstown do not know a lot about these famous Fordstownstars.”

Cllr Bray continued by saying “In Kells, the town council recognised Maureen O’Hara in 2005 when she was made a Freewoman of Kells and a beautiful bust of her now holds pride of place in Bective Square.”

“There is a tourism potential for Meath if such a walk of fame was established as movie tourism is a growing industry. Thousands travel to Ireland every year to see Skellig Michael because of Star Wars, to do the Game of

Thrones tours and Trim gets visitors because of Braveheart being filmed locally.” “A movie landmark in Meath like this would be an attraction for movietourists.”

12 WEEK COCAINE SUPPORT GROUP

Meath Community Drug and Alcohol Response - MCDAR

A new cocaine support group commenced on Wednesday 20th March 2024 in Meath Community Drug and Alcohol Response service in Navan town centre.

Meath Community Drug and Alcohol Response, is a community addiction service based in Navan and Trim. The 12-week Cocaine / Crack Cocaine reduce the use, will run every Wednesday night from 6 - 7.30 out of our Navan Service. This is a much needed service to our community at the present time.

Recent figures from Health Research Board - HRB, in January 2022 shows that Irish society has faced significant challenges with cocaine and crack cocaine abuse, although the nature and extent of the issue has evolved since then. Cocaine, once considered the drug of the wealthy, has become increasing prevalent across all social & economic strata, contributing to a range of social and health problems in Irish communities.

The availability of cocaine both in powder and rock – crack form persists despite efforts to curb its availability. Crack cocaine, a potent and highly addictive form of the drug, poses risks due to its rapid onset and intense effects. Its affordability relative to powder cocaine makes it appealing to marginalized communities, exacerbating issues of poverty and inequality.

The consequences of cocaine and crack cocaine abuse, and dependence extend beyond individual health concerns, impacting families and communities nationwide. Increased demand for these drugs has strained healthcare resources and addiction support services, while also contributing to societal stigmatization of drug users. There is a wide range of negative physical and emotional symptoms to cocaine consumption including depression, anxiety, mood swings, violence, hypertension delusions etc.

We in MCDAR offer and nonjudgmental, confidential space to address these issues. We would encourage anyone who is struggling, to get in touch with us. The Group will support individuals to address their drug issues. The 12-week programme is a psychosocial educational programme that is designed to encourage coping mechanisms, deal with craving and triggers, and develop a recovery mindset. There is also a drop-in service in Navan on a Mon and Wed from 2pm - 4pm in Unit 5, Block C, Abbey Rd, Navan, Co Meath.

We also offer 1:1 keyworking support, aftercare, stabilisation group, advocacy, and a drop-in service to assist those in need of support with alcohol /substance misuse and addiction issues. If

Temporary Waiver Must Be Extended says Cllr. Paul McCabe

THE TEMPORARY

WAIVER of development levies and the refund of Uisce Éireann water and wastewater connection charges must be extended tofurtherboostthesupply of new housing stock and alleviate pressures in securing builders to carry out work according to the Leas Chathaoirleach of Meath County Council, Cllr.PaulMcCabe.

The Kells and North MeathCouncillorsaidthat a decision needs to be madeveryquicklybyMin-

ister O’Brien and government, asthewaiverandrefund scheme, which was first introduced in April 2023, is due to expire an theendofApril.

“Since last year, builders of new-build homes have not been required to pay development levies to local authorities for new build homes. Instead, the local authority invoices the amount of the levy to the Government, who refunditbacktothelocalauthority.”

“In addition, water and wastewater connection charges levied by Uisce Éireann are refunded to the developer when valid commencement notices are issued,” Cllr McCabe explained.

“The waiver and refund scheme have proven immensely effective, as evidenced by the increase of commencements by 21% in 2023 to over 32,800 housing units. Even more encouraging is the data over the past 3 months

which clearly indicates an even greater ramp up by thesector.

"The waiver has inadvertently caused serious pressureinthemarketand builders are under unprecedented demand to get houses started in order to avail of the waiver. This, added to the terrible weather over recent months has resulted in sites being closed and houses remaining unbuilt.” Cllr McCabe went ontosay“Governmentactiontoactivatethedelivery of more homes is working, however we need to guard the progress that is being made and ensure the upwardtrajectorycontinues.”

“The deadline for the expiration of this temporary measure is fast approaching and the Housing Ministermusttakestockofthe units that came on the market as a direct result of this measure and take decisive action to safe-guard this crucial stream of supply"heconcluded.

Corr Proposes North Meath Further Education Institute

CORMACCORR,anIndependent candidate in the upcoming local elections, has declared his support for establishing a further education institute in North Meath, specifically inKells.

Corr announced his endorsement for this proposal via social media by, stating “Today, I wish to expressmysupportforthe establishment of a North Meath Institute of Further EducationinKells.”

“For too long, residents of our town and the surrounding areas seeking further education or training have been required to travel long distances to attend classes and lectures. This has harmed our town and placed many families under unnecessary financialburden.”

“I firmly believe that an institute of further education is the ultimate solu-

tion to this problem. I envision a purpose-built instituteofferingLevel5and 6 courses, practical training, and specialized video conferencing rooms, allowing students enrolled in universities at home and abroad to attend lecturesremotely.”

Corrcontinued“Initially, various courses should be piloted locally in temporary accommodation. If successful,apurpose-built institution, inkeepingwith the surrounding appear-

ance, should be constructed on council-owned land, perhaps on a section of the over 100 acres owned by the council at Lloyd. In my view, the establishment of this further education institute would be in keeping with tradition. After all, it was Kells that gave the world one of ourmostimportantmanuscripts, theBookofKells.”

“The institute would offer the opportunity for North Meath to grow, progress, and develop, as has been the case in many other areas. It would bring considerable job opportunities for locals, increased footfall for local businesses, and, most importantly, it would offer localpeopletheopportunity to further their education and expand their horizons, allowing for a betterstandardoflivinganda moresecurefuture.”

“If elected on June 7, I willbeginworkingtomake thisproposalarealityfrom day one onwards. The late great Nelson Mandela oncesaidthateducationis thegreatestforceforchangingourworld.Itismybelief that this is also true for NorthMeath.”

He concluded “It is time forourareatobegiventhe tools it needs to build a truly successful and prosperoussociety.”

“This is not the first time that there has been an attempttobringathird-level institutiontoKells.”

RESPONDING TO RISING LAND PRICES IN CO. MEATH CULTIVATE’S FARMER FRIENDLY FINANCE

Over the last 5 years agricultural land prices have increased by one third in the Republic of Ireland – according to last week’s Irish Farmers Journal land price survey. Perhapsmorestaggeringis the price volatility such as in County Meath where landpriceshaveincreased by 12.2% for the same period.

Two of the key driving forces behind this surge in demandare:

• Dairy farmers looking to buy or lease land due to tighter nitrates rules. In very basic terms, some dairyfarmersneedtobuy/ lease more land or reduce cow numbers to comply withthenewnitratesrules.

• Higher forestry planting targets

The Government’s climate action plan targets a forestry cover of 18% by 2050.

As farming in Ireland becomes more

sustainable, Cultivate Credit Unions are ready to support farmers who need to purchase land, adopt new green technologies or upgradefarmmachinery.

“Cultivate Credit Unions understand the critical role farming plays in generating economic activity in towns and villages throughout rural Ireland” said Dean Murphy of St Colmcilles (Kells) Credit Union. “We continue to innovate by

offering farmers Cultivate loans which are designed to support the growth and development of their farm business which includes thepurchaseoffarmland”.

Traffic Calming Scheme For Main Street-Station Road Junction

CATHAOIRLEACH of the South Drogheda-East Meath Municipal District, Cllr Stephen McKee, is strongly supporting the commencementshortlyofa new traffic-calming scheme at the junction of Main Street and Station Road, Duleek.

McKee stated “I am pleased that work will start by June on traffic calming measures at the junction of Main Street & Station Road, Duleekfollowingtheperiod of a Non-Statutory Public Consultation. I regularly raise the important issue of road safety on Main Street and Station Road with the Council.”

He continued “Indeed, I was the only Public Representative to make a formal submission on this important project as part of the Public Consultation. Works will include a new set of traffic lights, 2 new pedestrian crossings at the junction, realignment of kerb lines and the widening of footpaths.”

“These works will form part of an overall Duleek Public Realm Plan which will be developed to improve public infrastructure in the village, improve the environment for local businesses and enhance the quality of life for local residents. It will be important that adequate funding is provided to ensure that any agreed Public Realm Plan canbefullyfundedandthat theworkisfullycarriedout.”

“The new road safety and trafficcalmingworksforthe

bottomofStationRoadonto Main Street are very welcome. Traffic calming is badly needed also on the Station Road, on the Longford Road, the Navan Road and out at Duleek Soccer Club at Carranstown. There are just far too many HGV's coming through the village. Long-term, the Bypass is critical to remove heavy traffic from our Main Street. I will continue to lobby for further traffic calming and roadsafetymeasuresforthe area”concludedMcKee.

With CHOICE - A Home For All Seasons

Most of us really love to spend as much time outdoorsaswecanandoneof the key steps to making youroutdoorareasinviting and comfortable is by investinginhigh-qualityoutdoor furniture. Rattan furniture is one of the most stylish, durable, and comfortable options on the market.

However, beforeyourush out and pick up some rattan garden furniture, it's important to weigh up your options. Choosing rattangardenfurniturecan feel confusing if you've never bought rattan pieces before. If you don't research properly and make the mistake of opting for cheap garden furniture, you might end up with a poor-quality set that looks shabby and needs replacing in no time. To avoid this, keep reading to find out everything you need to know in this guide to choosing rattan garden furniture.

WHYBUYRATTANFURNITURE?

Before we get into the different rattan furniture options to investigate, we look at the main reasons why buy people buy rattan gardenfurnitureinthefirst place? Wicker furniture dates back thousands of

years, right to the Egyptian empire. Wicker and rattan are some of the oldest forms of furniture making andarestillhighlypopular today. Not only is rattan furniture attractive, but it's also very strong and lightweight.

With technology in manufacturing constantly evolving, all the newest range of rattan furniture sets are built to withstand theunpredictableweather, Ireland really can have a daynearlycomposedofall seasons, whether it's rain, storms, sun or wind.

Rattan Garden Furniture Options Are Strong and LongLasting

Oneoftheprimarybenefits of rattan furniture options is that they are very strong and long-lasting. Natural rattan furniture is sensitive to exposure to sunlight, moisture, mould, and the elements. However, if protected and well looked after, they can last fordecades.

Nowadays, rattan furniture is usually manufactured using a powdercoated aluminium frame and constructed out of synthetic rattan, namely plastic polyethene, polyurethane, and polyvinyl chloride.

Syntheticrattanfurniture has several advantages

over natural rattan and is much better suited to the outdoors. Natural rattan will weather quite quickly if left out in the open. Synthetic rattan, on the other hand, is highly resistant to sundamage, moisture, and mould. Therefore, we would recommend you go for synthetic wicker when choosing rattan garden furniture.

RATTAN GARDEN FURNITURE IS LIGHT AND EASY TO MOVE AROUND

Another benefit of rattan garden furniture is that it's light and easy to move around.Thisisidealinoutdoor settings where you might want to shift seating to suit the sun angle, season, oroccasion.

When the real chill of winter hits and it's time to move your outdoor furniture into the garage or garden shed—you'll easily be able to carry it with two people, soportabilityisnot anissue.

IT’S EASY TO CLEAN

Besides being lightweight and durable, synthetic rattan furniture options are alsoeasytoclean.

For a gentle cleaning, all you need to do is brush them down with a broom and maybe give your pieces a once-over with a dampclothandwater.

For a more extensive deep clean, you can even take a sprayer or power washer to synthetic rattan gardenfurniture. Most rattan furniture would not be complete without some fire retardant garden furniture cushions for your dining tables, chairs & seats. This makes them resistant to both sun damageandstaining.

However, if you do need to give them a clean, all youmustdoispopthecovers into the washing machineorifyoupreferlaundry cleaning as an option either.

RATTAN GARDEN FURNITURE IS STYLISH ANDATTRACTIVE

Rattan garden furniture is also stylish and attractive. Because outdoor furniture must be durable, a lot of designs are more functional than elegant. Synthetic outdoor rattan furniture options are not like this. Synthetic rattan garden furniture mimics the look of natural indoor

rattan pieces while being durable enough to stand uptotheoutdoors.

What's more, rattan furniture for gardens can fit into a variety of design themes. It is one of the few optionsthatmanagestobe both classic and contemporary at the same time. This means you can pair it with either a traditionalstylehomeoramoremodern, minimalistic home. According to reports, 50% of Irish homeowners favour garden designs that reflect their homes. Rattan is a versatile choice that can help you tie your garden's aesthetic to the overalldesignplanforyour home.

TIPS FOR CHOOSING

RATTAN GARDEN FURNITURE

Measure your space before you head to the shops

Bring your tape measure along so you can measure the sets and ascertain which one will fit best into yourarea.

Alwayscheckonlinecustomer reviews if you can If it's not possible to find online reviews for individualgardensets, youcan also check the reviews for the supplier or manufacturer. This will give you an idea of the overall level of product quality and what customers genuinely think.

JOE’S JOTTER: ACE REVISION SIGNPOSTS TO SUCCESS

1. REWARD YOURSELF

Don’t forget to ‘have a life’ as you prepare for your exams. Reward yourself after a long study session with a trip to the cinema or visit to your friends. Try your best to develop your own balancebetween work and play. Ultimately, reward yourselfwithbreaks-takingareasonable break after every good hour’s work.

There is nothing wrong with rewards like chocolate, ice-cream or a packet of gummy bears; as everyone who has done something constructive deserves a little thank you. The best reward you cangiveyourselfonstudydaysare breaks.

2. STAY CONNECTED

Itisimportanttokeepupcommunication with your friends and family around exam time. Let

them know how you are feeling especiallyifyouareanxiousabout a subject. You will feel so much better about a problem if you ‘chat’ about it to someone. It can be easy to get cut off from the outsideworldwhenyouarehighlyfocused, so try not to let this happen.

Balance is the optimal situation here. Having a study buddy or study group you can lean on and workwithisasuperwayofstaying connected.

3. USE YOUR FAMILY

Using your family to help you learn is a useful tool that few utiliseproperly.Someofyoursiblings will have completed exams and may be able to pass on some good quality information or advice to you, so remind them to save their notes.

Even if the content of their notes isn’t suitable for your learning style, their methods and notes structure could give you some ideas on preparation of your own. If you are the oldest in the family, get your parents involved and tap into knowledge and practical advice they may have on subjects they enjoyed in school.

4. STICK TO YOUR PLAN (AS BEST YOU CAN)

Youneedtoviewrevisionasafulltime job making sure you stick to theplanyousetoutforyourself. In my opinion, this involves not having a part time job, getting that Lifestyle Timetable in place, attendingallyourclasses, anddoing homeworktothebestofyourability. If on ‘no school’ days you decide on nine a.m. as the start time for study, get up before then, have breakfast, get ready and begin studying at that exact time.

The students that do well are those who apply this self-disciplined approach and it guarantees that you are getting maximum efficiency out of your time. A high level of satisfaction will come when you get your exam results; knowing you gave it your all. It is better having a plan in place and fail sometimes on it than no plan at all. Try not to beat yourself up if things don’t fall into place exactly each time. Get up and start again.

Guirke Calls for Fairness and Transparency in Tara Mines Negotiations

Meath West TD Johnny Guirke has called for the Government to increase their engagement with Boliden Tara Mines managementandunions, amid ongoing negotiations following the mine's closure oneyearago.

In June, it will mark one year since the closure of BolidenTaraMines, which resulted in the loss of 600 direct jobs and over 2,000 indirect jobs. The slow progress of negotiations has left workers and their familiesinastateoflimbo, facing uncertainty about

the mine's potential reopening in the second quarterofthisyear, aswell as future terms and conditionsofemployment.

Many of these workers are burdened with substantial mortgages and the everyday costs associated

rested and ready to focus again. Getting to bed at a reasonable time and getting plenty of sleep at theweekendwillallowyoutostick to your goals and plans. You will have more time during the summertohavefun.Nowisthetimeto focus.

6. STICK YOUR STICKIES

I have known top students to have sticky notes stuck to the inside of cupboard doors, on the edge of mirrors, laptop monitors, TV screens, etc. Anywhere your eyes fall, you should put a post-it (sticky note) with key information on it! Repeatedly seeing information as you walk past or glance in the mirror will help to secure it into your long-term memory, in the same way that seeing adverts helps you remember a brand. Use different coloured and sized sticky notes for different subjects. Again, it is all about developing your own system and methods that you like. Stickies come in all shapes, sizes and colours. Use different ones for different subjects. Get creative in order to remind the brain to remember things.

7. BELIEVE IN THE WORK YOU HAVE DONE

You should not estimate all the learning you have done over the last few years. I always find that students know more than they think.Frommyownexperiencein school and college exams, I found that my brain went to another level once a big exam started. I had a level of focus and determinationtodowellthatdidn’texistup

to that point. You will experience this also.

Consolidation of your revision is key as you get closer to the exam. If you have a good set of study notes, just work on summarising them. Looking over new material with only a short period left may only increase anxiety levels. Discuss the notes that you have made out with your teacher, even showing it to them. They will guide you as to whether you have your bases covered for the questions on the papers. Each paper is different, and each subject is different, so a quick chat with each teacher is important here.

Drop me a line if you need advice as always.

Boliden's recent announcement of a significant $463.5 million investment in its operations in Sweden is a clear indication that the company is not lacking in financial resources.

St. Kinneth’s Church to Open as Branch Library

THE OLD ST. KINNETH’S

CHURCH in Ballivor is to shortly open as a branch library for Meath County Library service. When the new village of Ballivor began to develop around the RIC police barracks, it was decided to build a new Protestant church to serve it. Accordingly at a vestry meeting held in the old thatched church in Killaconnigan on the 25th October 1819, it was decided to build a new church one milefromthere.Atthetime, the only other buildings there were a shop and a shebeen.

Lord Darnley also gave the land opposite, on the southwest side of the crossroads, for the construction of the Roman Catholic church of St. Columbanus, also built in 1821 [a few years before Catholic Emancipation] and still in use.AtthetimeSt.Kinneths was being built, John Repton was adding buildings in the park at Cobham, and while it is most unlikely that he was involved in any way with St. Kinneths Church, it is likely that Darnley must have taken perhaps mere than just a passinginterestinitsdesign and building between 1819 and 1821.

In August 1791, Darnley married Elizabeth Brownlow, who donated the Church Plate which bears the inscription ‘The gift of Elizabeth, Countless of Darnley 1823’.

The Board of First Fruits gave a loan of £700 towards

John Bligh, 4th Earl of Darnley [1767 – 1831] donated the land on the northwest side of the crossroads and paid £200 towards the cost of the church, which is dated 1821.

the building of the church. About fifty churches were built by the Board of First Fruits at this time in the counties of Meath, Louth, Longford and Westmeath. Only six of those had spires, St Kinneth’s being one. Suchspiresaddedconsiderably to the expense of a church and appear to have been adopted very much as a symbol of parochial status, and in this case it is quite possible that Lord Darnley’s gift was for this. Theloanwasrepaidbylevyingacessofthreepenceper acre for seventeen success-

ive years on all landowners, Protestant and Roman Catholic alike.

The church is absolutely typical of the Board of First Fruits, a three-bay box with awesttower, asseenallover Ireland, only the spire making it out as something rather grander. In ‘The Building’s of Ireland –North Leinster’ it is described as follows: “1821. Pretty hall and tower church.

Moore Calls for the Introduction of a Transferable Garda Vetting Licence

CLLR. RONAN MOORE, Social Democrats has called for an overhaul of the Garda Vetting system and the introduction of a transferable Garda vetting license after it emerged that nearly 600,000 applications were processed in 2023alone.

The numbers were released in response to a parliamentary question by Social Democrats Justice Spokesperson Deputy CatherineMurphy. Cllr.Mooreexplains“The National Garda Vetting Process is an important process in that it helps to ensure the safety of children and vulnerable adults. Vetting is carried out by An Garda Síochána in accordance with the provisions of the National Vetting Bureau (Children and Vulnerable Persons) Acts2012–2016,andmust be completed by anyone

whoundertakesaroleprofessionalorvoluntary”

“However instead of receiving a transferable Garda vetting license, the way you might receive a national driving license, you must apply for a new Gardavettinglicenseevery time you take on a new

role.Thisregularlyleadsto the same person submitting multiple applications, which might be processed separately but in parallel with each other. This makes absolutely no sense.”

He also said “From my personalexperienceinthe

last few years alone I would have submitted Garda vetting applications in my capacity as a board member of a primary school, of a Family Resource Centre, as Chair of the Comhairle Steering Committee, as a children’s author giving library talks and as an underage sports coach.”

”This is on top of the Garda vetting clearance I would have as a schoolteacher and the certificates I received for passing the Children First programme that some of theserolesalsoneed.”

Cllr. Moore continues: ‘While the Minister of Justice was unable to furnish any details on ‘the number of persons with two or more Garda vetting requests being processed in parallel” “I believe that with 588,690 vetting applications in the country

The walls are rendered, and the pitched roof is covered with natural slates. The tower is also rendered, and has ashlar stone buttresses, string courses, castellations and pinnacles. The traceried windows are set in pointed arch openings with stone surrounds and hood mouldings. The tower has timber battened doors and louvers to the bell chamber. The church closed in the early1990sandthebuilding was then used by the Ballivor Historical Society as a computertrainingfacility. It was acquired in 2004 by Meath County Council. St. Kenneth’s Church Renovation Committee was established in 2012 to clean up and restore the church for community use.

“From a practical perspective I also believe that to safely process up to 2,000 applications a day it must not only be a very time-consuming process, but it is also a very costly oneaswell.”

“When we asked the Minister of Justice if An Garda Síochána ‘could provide a blanket clearance for persons that are cleared by Gardaí that can be used across multiple roles by the person, and if she will consider a timelimitedcertificatethatpersons could present in lieu of separate Garda clearance requests’ we were informed that there was a Garda Vetting Review Group established in April 2021 that ‘meets regularly

to discuss potential amendments to vetting legislation’ and that the Minister expects to ‘receivetheGroup’sreporton arrangements for Garda Vetting in the context of the introduction of a statutory re-vetting regime earlythisyear’”

“However, I find it extraordinary that we are now three years on since the group’s establishment and this obvious issue has yettoberesolved.”

Cllr.Mooreconcludedby saying “As a result, in my motiontocouncilthatwas passed by elected members, I am calling on the creation of a transferable Garda vetting license to make this process safer, more efficient, and less draining on resources, both human and financial.”

High Speed Broadband Still a Big Problem for Meath

THEPEOPLEOFMEATH

will be disappointed to findoutthatmanyofthem will continue waiting for high-speedbroadband.

An update provided to Sinn Féin TD for Meath East, Darren O’Rourke, confirmed that only 14% (3,000) of the (21,000) homes, farms, business and schools in the Intervention Area will receive viable connection by the endof2022.

It was also stated that 49% (approx. 10,300) connections will be made in 2025 and 2026, at the end oftheplan.

When asked about it, O’Rourke stated that “The update provided to me by NBI (National Broadband Ireland) outlines progress

to date and projections for broadband rollout in the county for the remaining years of the National BroadbandPlan(NBP).”

“Weknowthisisahugely importantprojectandthat targetsarebeingmissedby a long way to date, in part duetoCovid.”

“However, the NBI’s update outlines the planned rollout in Meath and sets out that 14% of the 20,696 properties in the plan will be available for connection by the end of 2022,

40% by the end of 2023, 51% by the end of 2024, 95% by the end of 2025, and 100% by the end of 2026.”

Laterintheinterview,he also mentioned that: “I do welcome the fact that NBI saythatsomeoftheearlier barriers to smooth rollout, such as engagement with local authorities and rules regarding poling, have been largely addressed, but the rollout is still too slow and targets are still being missed. I will continuetopressforimprovementonboththesefronts.”

In short, Meath is slowly gaining high speed broadband. But for a lot of homes, it will be another few years before they get theirhandsonit.

Elliot Smith, Roman Candle. The Candle Still Burns

IN 1994, ELLIOT SMITH released his first album, that being Roman Candle, and in doing so ignited a darker place for thoughtful, moody music that can stillbefeltinpopmusictoday. For this moment, lets appreciate the beauty of Smithsfirstalbum.

Lacking proper studio time and a budget for that matter, Smith launched himself into the music worldwiththisEP,roughly scrapped together while he undertook odd jobs suchasplasteringandgiggingtoraisehisfunds.

The result of which was an album that felt and soundedhandmade, while also using these traits as a badge of honour, only every adding to the overall aestheticofthealbum.Roman Candle is dark and moody, and best enjoyed alone.

Music For The Masses - A Music Review of Neon On My Naked Skin

NEON SPACE MEN are a male German-trio hailing from Hannover, Leipzig and Stuttgart, founded in 2022, they cite themselves are ‘the last chapter of 80s Synthpop’, which is clearly apparent throughout this, their exceptional and highly recommended tentrack debut album as both that decade and genre is obviously at the very heart oftheirinfluences.

Therefore, you can expect the sound of early Alphaville and their superb debut-album Forever YoungcombinedwithErasure including the vocals of Andy Bell, as Neon Space Men frontman Jochenperfectlydisplaysa similar, impressive style of vocals clearly tailor made foraSynthPopact.

They made their debut release in December 2022 with the superb Erasur, like single Follow Me,

available on CD, and later released as a digital-single inAugust2023.

Itincludesanimpressive coveroftheKateBushsingle Running Up That Hill, and one with a different twist, blending piano and faintelectronics, whileminus the thundering drums oftheoriginal.

Further digital-singles followed throughout 2023, the darker, harder tone of Twisted Mind in April, whichincludesanimpressive and faithful cover of the 1982 Depeche Mode single Leave In Silence. The sturdy, up-tempo

Things, The Ballad of Adam and Steve in June, and in October, the midpaced Seeds. November brought another impressive and faithful cover, with the SPOCK classic NeverTrustAKlingonalso made available as a free download.

That same month, Neon Space Men supported SPOCK at a show in Hannover. This was followed by a heartfelt, emotional ballad, the stunning Elitalamenting the late-Mother of one of the band’s members, released in December.

The World’s End – Sad, Funny, and Overall Entertaining

By Bartosz Labuc- Dunboyne College of Further Education

This is all displayed in the first song from the album, self-titled Roman Candle, which highlights his rough use of instrumentsandcontinuous, addictive riffs. Smiths’ raw usage of these instrumentalsserveasakeyholeinto the mind of the artist, the first of many where he shares unadulterated adult experience and squeezesitintosongform. Paired with Smiths low, haunting voice and lyrics, thisalbumisamasterclass in moody yet emotional writing and is highly recommended to those interested in knowing just how their heart may tug in an unexpectedenvironment.

with a world tour for the album also having done huge numbers. Yet in the lyrics, we hear huge influence from big dogs Leonard Cohen, Kurt Cobain, and more than anyone,ElliotSmith.

THEWORLD’SEND ishilarious entry in the socalled cornetto trilogy written by Edgar Wright starringSimonPeggasthe endlessly endearing and utterly immature Gary King and his well put togetherfriendAndyKnightley played by Nick Frost as they alongside some other friends return to their hometown for a drinking marathon in all twelve pubs only to discover it veryalien, literally!

This year, Phoebe Bridgers and her band, Boygenius, released The Record, a hit pop album that is multi grammy winningandhighlysuccessful,

Smith sadly passed away in the 2000s after a highly successful career in indie music, and in 2024 his influence can still be heard onourradios.

While Roman Candle doesn’tgetthecredititdeserves, its clear that perhaps a roman candle has aneverlastingflame.

The film has Edgar Wright’s classic, snappy cinematography that leaves gives not nowhere near enough time to absorballthesymbolismand foreshadowing that they are so saturated with, the brief glimpses we see of every character’s workplace or home as Gary talks and or manipulates them into joining him gives us a book’s worth of insightintowhotheyare.

The story is also hilarious, bringing what appear to be well put together

adults be put in the company of what is gradually revealed to be a narcissistic drunk with hardly any redeemable qualities besidesbeingveryentertaining.

The relationships between the friends (if you can call them that by end of the film) gets more interesting with each pub they visit as Gary pushes them through the madness around them to regain the “glory” of his teenageyears.

Laughs aside the film doestackleseriousthemes of addictions and more specifically alcoholism

In conclusion The World’s End is a very enjoyable film with great comedy, cinematography, set design and narrative, it also has an ending that could easily be expanded upon into a full film to itself, while the effects date it somewhat it’s still by far my favorite Edgar Wright film.

Blake to Blaze A Trail in June Local Elections

SINN FÉIN DirectorofElections in Meath, Darren O'Rourke TD, has welcomedadecisionbytheDepartment of Housing, Local Government and Heritage to reverse its position on firefighters contesting Local Elections, saying it now paves the way for Dunshaughlin Station Officer, Fionnan Blake, to contest the Local Elections for his partyinJune.

In October, Blake was selected along with Ratoathwoman Trish Murtagh, to contest the Local Election for Sinn Féin in the Ratoath Electoral Area, but it soon became clear that both Meath County Council and theDepartmentofHousing, LocalGovernmentandHeritage considered Blake ineligible to contest the election due to their shared interpretation of the law governing local authority employees contesting elections.

"When we received written confirmation from Meath County Council on 19th March that Mr. Blake would not have been eligible to contest the elections, we were left with no option but to pursue the matter legally.
