LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR

Welcome back to another year in the Mater Dei Theatre Program and to our 2019-2020 season! This year’s theatre programming theme is “the ties that bind.” How are we, as friends, family, and humans, tied to one another? Our season opens by exploring this theme through William Shakespeare’s classic Much Ado About Nothing. How do language and communication bind us together - or tear us apart? Are respect and reputation more important than love? We then move on to the all-school play, The Diviners, where we examine the ties of friendship, faith, and fate in this tragic tale of a boy who has a gift for “divining” water and the preacher who befriends him. In our final production of the 19-20 season, we take a darkly comic look at the macabre family ties that bind in the all-school musical, The Addams Family. Our program has adopted a mission statement that we, Mater Dei Theatre, are dedicated to telling authentic stories that engage, entertain, and enrich our community. In addition to our amazing scholar-artists, our theatre program is comprised of several wonderful people who dedicate themselves to the telling of these theatrical stories: Mrs. Andrea Fouts, the teacher of our newly-minted Honors Musical Theatre class and director of The Addams Family; Ms. Alexi Thomas as the production assistant on all of our productions in addition to serving as the program’s Theatre Assistant and teaching full-time English; we welcome back Ms. Susanna Vaughan, who previously directed voice and movement on last season’s Love’s Labour’s Lost and joins us this year as the director of Much Ado About Nothing; and as the Director of Theatre, I will continue as the mentor/advisor to our Cappies team, ComedySportz, and Thespian Troupe, and will direct The Diviners. In a look ahead to other Theatre programming, Shortsfest will be presented by the Honors Theatre class, completely developed and devised as an ensemble. In addition, the Honors Musical Theatre will delight our community with performances throughout the year. The spring Children’s Theatre Tour, in honor of Read Across America, has already had booking requests to tour several of our local area schools. Our improv troupe has unanimously agreed to form a ComedySportz team and is looking forward to bringing matches to our Mater Dei community throughout the season. Our Thespian Troupe #3464 and Theatre Arts Club, under the excellent leadership of Paige Solano (President, ’20) will announce dates for Theatre-related social events, drives, and charitable events throughout the year. She is supported by Vice President Cindy Garcia (’20), Rory Dahl (ComedySportz Student Manager & Secretary, ’21), Caroline Kawabe (Treasurer, ’21), Fiona Mulholland (’20) and London Coco Griffin (‘22) as our Improv Liaisons, and Gwen Smith (Lead Cappies Critic, ’20). I’d like to extend a warm salute of gratitude to our Mater Dei Administration, Mr. Scott Melvin, Mrs. Marisa Winch (‘96), our terrific Theatre Parents™ Al and Yvonne Verkuylen, and to all of our Theatre families and donors for their support of the Theatre Department. Your encouragement and nurturing of our scholar-artists is deeply appreciated and makes serving our community an absolute joy.

Thank you for joining us this season. We look forward to a wonderful year with these most talented Monarchs!

Mrs. Lissa Slay, M.S.Ed., Director of Theatre

Director’s Notes Written toward the middle of his career, Much Ado about Nothing remains one of Shakespeare’s most popular works and one of my favorite plays of all time. The witty banter between Beatrice and Benedick is simply delicious to read and say. The way in which the play teasingly discusses marriage and gender roles makes it as timely a play as ever. That’s one reason why we decided to set the play in 1945, just as WWII is ending. That tumultuous time saw many men fighting and dying, while women were left to assume command of the home and the workplace. In this play, you’ll see a woman break convention by being the leader of her city, while simultaneously supporting tradition by securing an arranged marriage for her daughter; you’ll see an independent woman balk at the expectations set on her, preferring the life of a bachelor; you’ll see a man set against conventional marriage change his tune and pursue that which he despised. Nearly every character has a complete change of heart by the end of the play – except the villain, of course. The villain cannot let go of others’ negative perceptions of her. Instead of accepting responsibility for her mistakes and moving forward, she is consumed by anger and loneliness and seeks to bring others into her misery. Another major theme of the play explores how rumors and gossip affect us. For most characters, this plays out in a comedic fashion and works out in their favor in the end. The villain, however, allows the rumors to ruin her. This funny play has a deep message at heart: letting go of the misconceptions we have of others and ourselves allows us to discover new and exciting possibilities. Thank you for supporting these students and their hard work. Enjoy the show!

She has greatly enjoyed her time rehearsing for this production and learning from her great theatre teachers. She hopes you enjoy the show!

Imani Brutlag (Hero) Imani is extremely excited to play Hero in this production. Her previous experience includes Drowsy Chaperone, Antigone, and Comedy of Errors and she has been a crew member in four plays and musicals at Mater Dei. Imani is also involved in choir as a member of Bel Canto. She has always been heavily involved with choir and theatre all her life and puts her entire heart into it. Imani is so appreciative for all the hard work put into the show by all the cast, crew and directors. She would like to thank her family, friends, and teachers for all their support. She is so glad to have been a part of this amazing cast and crew and hopes that you enjoy the show!

Isabelle Buchanan (Antonia) Isabelle is a junior and this is her fifth play at Mater Dei and third Shakespeare in the Grotto. She adores everything about theatre, whether it’s acting on stage or admiring from the audience. Other hobbies include laughing for hours and making unforgettable memories with her friends and family. She is beyond excited for her third Shakespeare performance and hopes everyone enjoys Much Ado About Nothing as much as she does. It has been such an incredible honor for her to work with this superbly talented cast and crew, and she especially wants to thank the outstanding and supportive audience for making it all worthwhile.

Beau Calvert (Borachio) Beau is super excited to be playing Borachio in Mater Dei’s production of Much Ado About Nothing! At Mater Dei he has previously performed as Anthony Dull in Love’s Labour’s Lost, and the magistrate in Fools. Outside of Mater Dei, Beau has played Sourdough Sam in South Coast Repertory’s production of American Tall Tales, and the oblivious boyfriend in improvised Hallmark movies, as well as a notable amount of smaller roles, including Kenickie in Pacific Palisades Theater’s Grease, and Hans in Pacific Conservatory’s Frozen. Beau would like to thank Chris Sullivan for both putting him into and helping him through difficult situations; his parents, Kris and Jay Calvert, for supporting him no matter how great the challenge; and his good friend Clayton for keeping him well. He hopes you enjoy the show!

Kelli Chamberlain (Leonata) Kelli Chamberlain is very excited to play Leonata in Mater Dei’s production of Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing. Her previous Shakespearean roles at Mater Dei include Dromio of Ephesus in The Comedy of Errors and Boyet in Loves Labour’s Lost. Kelli is involved in both theatre arts and the music program, a member of both Chamber Singers and Advanced Theatre. Kelli would especially like to thank Ms. Vaughan, Mrs. Slay, and Ms. Thomas for including her in this wonderful Mater Dei tradition.

Rory Dahl (Ursula) Rory Dahl, a junior at Mater Dei, is beyond excited to be playing Ursula in Much Ado About Nothing. Rory has been involved in the Theatre Arts Program at Mater Dei since her freshman year and has loved every second of it. She’s a member of MD’s Improv Team, a Theatre Arts Club officer, and a Cappies critic. Outside of theatre, Rory enjoys playing guitar, reading, and discovering new ways to tie her shoes. She’d like to thank the cast, the crew, Ms. Thomas, Ms. Vaughan, and Mrs. Slay for all their hard work and support during the production.

13

Cast Bios Noah Dang (Benedick) Noah Dang could not be more excited to perform as Benedick in Mater Dei’s production of the Shakespearean comedy Much Ado About Nothing. He is now in his sophomore year. His previous experience includes acting in the role of Mishkin in Fools and Dumaine in Love’s Labour’s Lost. He would like to thank his family for always supporting him in his artistic endeavors; Ms. Vaughan for being an amazing director who helped him grow and flourish as an actor; the designers, technicians, and artists for truly making this production possible; and finally, the cast. Though rehearsal could be painstaking and exhausting, they made each one an enjoyable experience. He is glad you could come watch and hopes you enjoy the show!

Ethan Ferguson (Claudio) Ethan Ferguson is looking forward to playing Claudio in Mater Dei’s production of Much Ado About Nothing. This is his first year and his first play at Mater Dei and he is very excited. Ethan has performed in the following plays/musicals, Annie (Rooster) - 2016, Wizard of Oz (The Cowardly Lion) - 2017, All Shook Up (Chad) - 2018, Aladdin (Aladdin) - 2018, Mary Poppins (Bert)- 2019. This is also his very first Shakespeare play which he has never done before and he is thrilled. He can’t wait to see what this year has in store for him at Mater Dei. He is also excited to join the theatre department. Ethan would like to thank his friends, family, and especially his parents for sending him to Mater Dei for a great education. He loves Mater Dei so far and can’t wait to see what happens next this upcoming year. He hopes that you all enjoy the show.

Yannik Fischer (Sexton) Yannik Fischer is playing Sexton in Much Ado About Nothing during his freshman year. He believes that he will do exceptionally well as playing Sexton since he is interested in law and Sexton is acting like a judge in Much Ado About Nothing. Yannik has previously played such roles as the Grinch in The Grinch and with Businessman #1 in Elf. Besides acting, he enjoys a game of soccer and outdoor activities, like archery. Yannik would like to thank his brother, and Mater Dei alumnus, Zigann, for getting him started in theatre at Mater Dei. Also, he would like to thank Ms. Vaughan and Mrs. Slay for accepting his audition and for giving him the opportunity to play Sexton. Lastly, he would like to thank the audience for coming out and watching the show. The audience is what makes him want to continue acting and gives him the courage to act as someone else.

Cynthia Garcia (Margaret) Cynthia is thrilled to be playing Margaret in this production of Much Ado About Nothing! Now a senior at Mater Dei, she has been a part of the Theatre Arts Program for all four years. Her favorite role to date is Yenchna in Fools. She is also this year’s Thespian Troupe Vice President. She would like to thank her family for their endless support and love. She would be unable to achieve anything without her wonderful parents, awesome sister, and two lovely dogs. Cynthia is also grateful for her amazing friends who have helped her along her journey. She would also like to extend her gratitude to Mrs. Slay, Mrs. Vaughan, Ms. Thomas and the amazing cast and crew for all of their hard work in putting this show together. She could not have asked for a better show to initiate her last theatre season here at Mater Dei. She hopes you enjoy the show!

Coco Griffin (Lady Joan) London Coco is 15 years old and a very passionate performer. This year at Mater Dei, she is the Improv Liaison, on the Cappies team, and of course plays Lady Joan in Much Ado About Nothing! London Coco has trained in Acting and Performance at UCLA, Broadway Artists Alliance in NYC, UCI’s New Swan Shakespeare Festival, and so much more! She would love to thank all those involved in this production. Enjoy the show!

Maggie Hohenstein (Second Watchman)

14

Maggie is so excited to play Second Watchman in Mater Dei’s production of Much Ado About Nothing. This is her first high school play and her first Shakespearean production. She has previously played Witch One in Haphazardly Ever After, Glenda in Dorothy in Wonderland, and Katie Nanna in Mary Poppins, and has been acting since the fifth grade. Maggie is eternally grateful to her junior high drama teacher, Mr. U, for putting up with her throughout the years; her oldest friend, Lindsay, for showing her what theater is all about; her dad, for supporting her and being her inspiration; her mom, for pushing her to always do her best and try new things; her siblings, just for being awesome; and Mrs. Slay, her current theater teacher, for welcoming her into the Mater Dei ensemble. She hopes you enjoy seeing Much Ado as much as she enjoys being a part of it.

Cast Bios JD Houston (Prince/Don Pedro) JD Houston is excited to be performing in another Shakespearean play at Mater Dei. Last year, he played King of Navarre in Love’s Labour’s Lost. He also plays football at Mater Dei. He was in Theatre 1 last year and is now studying Musical Theatre. He’s excited for this production because he’s a junior now and, since it’s his second show at Mater Dei, he is more familiar with the amazing cast and crew in this production. He hopes you enjoy the show!

Caroline Kawabe (Balthasar) Caroline Kawabe is more than excited to play Balthasar in Mater Dei’s production of Much Ado About Nothing during her junior year! She has been in many productions prior to her role in Much Ado. Some of her past parts include: Sophia (Fools), Alice (Alice in Wonderland), Lily (Annie), and one of the Witches (Macbeth). This is Caroline’s fifth time acting in a production at Mater Dei and she is so thankful to have been given this opportunity. Caroline would like to give a big thank you to Ms. Vaughan, Mrs. Slay, Ms. Thomas, and the cast and crew for making this show possible! Also, a huge thank you to her family, friends, and past theatre coaches for helping her along the way. She hopes you enjoy the show!

Anthony Kubasek (Friar Francis) Anthony Kubasek is a freshman at Mater Dei and is highly excited to be a part of Much Ado About Nothing, his first play at MD. He always enjoys participating in the arts, whether that be choir, dance, or acting. In the past, Anthony has participated in Mater Dei’s Junior High Honor Choir and achieved third place in Mater Dei’s Junior High Vocal Competition. PERFORMING ARTS

2019 2020

LETTER FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

It is my sincere pleasure to welcome you to what promises to be a year full of beauty, a year full of dialogue, a year full of joy. Through dance and song, the visual and aural, and playing in every sense of the word, it is our hope that you may quiet the cares of a noisy world behind and find peace in our halls. It is our mission here in the arts to empower ambassadors of change through artistic expression, engaging our community to experience, reflect and react. Just as a kaleidoscope, we pray our events shift the lens of your perception, adding new opportunities to wonder and dream. And as we dream of the imminent construction of the Monarch Masterpiece, our new home for the performing arts, we give thanks for the countless patrons, alumni, grandparents and all who support our young artists down the path of excellence. They perform for you, they bring their greatest for you - thank you for being that stimulus for success. So please, sit back and enjoy the beauty of our remodeled grotto bedecked with Shakespearean prose and wild antics. Let your time here be as “merry as the day is long, as said by the Bard himself. Thank you again and God Bless!

CHORAL & VOCAL MUSIC PROGRAM STUDENT SPOTLIGHT

FRANCIS TRUONG

DARIO RIMICCI

hy do you love choir? I love W expressing myself, and choir allows me to do this in a variety of ways. I am involved in Chamber Singers and Men’s Barbershop. The music we do here is always something magical, and our Chambers groups of past have always given us that magical gift. I too want to express myself that way and give others that magical experience.

Have you always been interested in singing? I have been participating in choir since the 5th grade and have always had a natural affinity for music. Growing up, I admired my sister, who was in Chamber Singers, and I wanted to attain what she had. I love the emotional connection with music; it’s not just sound, but something tangible.

What is your favorite experience in the Choral and Vocal Music program? I’ve had so many great experiences, but I can never forget my first Fall Concert as a freshman. I was blown away not only by the Chamber Singers’ performance, but also by the choral community and how inviting they were.

You are also in theatre. How do the theatre arts relate to choir? They are both emotional activities they draw out different things from you. During choir, the emotional connection is your voice that you are putting out- unique to you. In theatre you have a different part to play, to be someone else. And doing technical theatre, I am able to bring different aspects to the show, which otherwise wouldn’t be noticed. I love being able to facilitate that.

What will you major in at college? In college, I want to double major in computer science with an emphasis in game design as well as major in music composition.

24

Where do you plan to attend college? My top choice is Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences in Boston. I love oncology and am looking towards a career in oncology research or trauma surgery.

MATTHEW DELONG What draws you to choir? Choir is a great place to be where you can get to know people. As a freshman, I started in Concert Choir, became a founding member of Kingsmen, and am now in Chamber Singers. We have fun and we work hard. It’s definitely a home away from home. No matter who you are or what you do, everyone should try choir, even if you don’t think you are great. I love to encourage people to do choir, so they can enjoy all the joy it brings to people. Do you participate in other activities on campus? I’m also the captain of the speech and debate team. I was the first member of Mater Dei to go to State. I am hoping to take more members this year. What are your future plans? I want to go to school at Notre Dame; study history and go into academia. I would focus on modern history, with an emphasis on early 20th century.

Mangia Mangia Restaurant Reviews: Don’t miss this one-of-a-kind, authentic Italian restaurant, owned and operated by two brothers from Sicily. Giuseppe and Pietro Cefalu have been making waves in Huntington Beach for years now. While the setting and the site are casual, the food is classic Italian and the service warm and friendly.

The Cefalus proudly serve only the freshest seafood (selected daily), an array of pastas with mouthwatering sauces, as well as signature eggplant dishes and a famous calamari fritti. This bustling favorite with locals is sure to please. Reservations are recommended for parties of four or more.

After culinary school in Italy, the Cefalu brothers worked in the restaurant industry for years, Pietro as Head Chef of some of the finest restaurants in Italy. In the early 1980's the brothers brought their authentic Italian cuisine to America, Giuseppe working on the West Coast, until finally opening Mangia Mangia in 1987. You could easily drown yourself in Marinara at Mangia Mangia, but keep an eye on the beloved restaurant's daily specials and you'll find all manner of Sicilian favorites. Look for the bucatini with roasted cauliflower, pine nuts and raisins that hews as closely to North Africa as it does to the Italian coast. Or opt for the swordfish with grilled eggplant that's dressed with bright, acidic citrus. When you walk in, the smell of garlic makes your mouth water. One of the two Sicilian brothers greets you at the door. The place is a typical mom and pop restaurant, nothing too flashy other than the flat screen playing tour videos of Italy.

CHORAL & VOCAL MUSIC PROGRAM SPOTLIGHT

MEET YOUR CHORAL & VOCAL MUSIC MASTERS

We recently sat down with our new director and the rest of the faculty to find out a little more about their background and why they love being at Mater Dei. Here’s what they had to say.

JODI REED

Director of Choral & Vocal Music

AMANDA BISTOLFO Associate Director of Choral & Vocal Music

Q: Why do you love choral & vocal music?

Q: How has choral & vocal music affected your life?

A: I love choir! There is nothing like the feeling of voices coming together, could be ten voices or two hundred - usually with some of your best friends, singing, creating amazing harmony and beautiful music together. It’s incredible to be able to create something from nothing - no instruments you hold or play, just the sound of the human voice.

A: I love the choral community, the sound itself, and the ability to accomplish things in a group that I couldn’t possibly do alone. While conducting during an assistantship after graduating college, I remember standing in front of a choir and realizing that I was truly happy and doing what I was meant to do, and I still feel that way when I get up in front of a choir today.

Q: What do you love most about working at MD?

Q: What do you love most about working at MD?

A: T he kids at Mater Dei are awesome! I love their dedication to everything they do!

A: T he students, of course! But also, the support from administration and the community. Plus, our students have access to so many opportunities within the program.

FUN FACT: I ’m obsessed with the ocean. I was a diver in high school and am currently an advanced scuba diver.

STEFAN MILLER

Vocal Music Conservatory Director

FUN FACT: I can juggle and have mean roundhouse and crescent kicks.

KENT HELWIG

Choral Accompanist

Q: How did you get into vocal music?

Q: W hy do you love working at Mater Dei?

A: I joined choir as a freshman in high school because my brother said it was cool. I was the worst of the worst, but I practiced before school, during lunch and after school to match pitch. As an adult, I can’t imagine doing anything else that brings me as much joy as singing & teaching voice. No where else do I feel as alive as when I’m on stage.

A: H ere at Mater Dei, as a working musician and educator, I really enjoy sharing my passion for music with students and strive to be creative in communicating musical concepts.

Q: What do you love most about working at MD? A: I love being able to impart knowledge & share my joy and passion with the students, while helping them find their own voice and passion. FUN FACT: I am currently on the Broadway tour of “Spongebob the Musical” 26

Q: What is the best part about working with students? A: M ost of all, witnessing a student’s transformation, their commitment to excellence, seeing and hearing their artistic growth is exhilarating for me and is one of the most rewarding aspects of my work. FUN FACT: My other car used to be a monorail.

Chipotle was born of the radical belief that there is a connection between how food is raised and prepared, and how it tastes. These principles result in real flavors that tantalize the tongue, salsas that singe the taste buds, and real ingredients that are responsibly sourced.
