SECOND SUNDAY JANUARY 12TH

Epiphany is... the manifestation or revelation of Christ to the Gentiles as represented by the Magi.

Matthew 2:1-12.

Epiphany is a part of traditional Christian worship since at least the 4th century.

The coming of the Magi is recalled as twelve days after Christmas. The day before is called the Twelfth Night, which is traditionally when Christmas decorations are taken down.

During this Epiphany, the world first saw the baby Jesus revealed as the true Son of God. Some also know this celebration unofficially as "The Three Kings' Day."

O FOR A THOUSAND TONGUES TO SING

Text: Charles Wesley (1707-1788)

Tune: Carl G Glaser (1784-1829)

Arr by: Lowell Mason (1792-1872)

SUNDAY, JANUARY 5TH, 2025

Although this First Sunday of the year Hymn lands a tad short of the beginning of Epiphany, it is very poignant and appropriate in its message. This hymn, first published in 1780, was written by Wesley for Sunday, May 21, 1739, the first Anniversary of his conversion on Pentecost Sunday. According to several scholars, the famous opening line.

"O for a Thousand tongues to Sing", may have been inspired by his German missionary mentor, Peter Bohler. Bohler preached,"Had I a thousand tongues, I would praise Him with them all!

O FOR A THOUSAND TONGUES TO SING

HYMN # 1

1 O for a thousand tongues to sing my great Redeemer's praise, the glories of my God and King, the triumphs of his grace!

2 My gracious Master and my God, assist me to proclaim, to spread thro' all the earth abroad the honors of your name.

3 Jesus! the name that charms our fears, that bids our sorrows cease, 'tis music in the sinner's ears, 'tis life and health and peace.

4 He breaks the power of cancelled sin, he sets the prisoner free; his blood can make the foulest clean; his blood availed for me.

5 To God all glory, praise, and love be now and ever given by saints below and saints above, the Church in earth and heaven.

O WORSHIP THE KING

Text: Robert Grant (1779-1838)

Tune: Adapt from Johann Hayden (1737-1806)

SUNDAY, JANUARY 12, 2025

Composer- Sir Robert Grant was born, and died, in India. He was a public servant in law, member of Parliament, and Governor of Bombay. His father was a leader in the church of England and also played an active role in the emancipation of slaves in the British Empire.

The hymn was published, (posthumously), in 1839 by Grant's brother. This hymn is primarily based on the idea of Psalm 104:1-7, and I quote...

"Bless the Lord, O my soul. You are very great. You stretch out the heavens like a tent. You set the earth on it's foundations, so that it shall never be shaken."

-Dr. Hawn, Professor of Sacred Music, Perkins School of Theology

O WORSHIP THE KING

HYMN #12

1 O worship the King all-glorious above, O gratefully sing his power and his love: our shield and defender, the Ancient of Days, pavilioned in splendor and girded with praise.

2 O tell of his might and sing of his grace, whose robe is the light, whose canopy space. His chariots of wrath the deep thunderclouds form, and dark is his path on the wings of the storm.

3 Your bountiful care, what tongue can recite? It breathes in the air, it shines in the light; it streams from the hills, it descends to the plain, and sweetly distills in the dew and the rain.

4 Frail children of dust, and feeble as frail, in you do we trust, nor find you to fail. Your mercies, how tender, how firm to the end, our Maker, Defender, Redeemer, and Friend!

5 O measureless Might, unchangeable Love, whom angels delight to worship above! Your ransomed creation, with glory ablaze, in true adoration shall sing to your praise!

LOVE DIVINE, ALL LOVES EXCELLING

Text: Charles Wesley (1707-1788)

Tune: John Zander (1815-1882)

SUNDAY, JANUARY 19, 2025

First published in 1747, it reflects Wesley's teachings on Christian perfection, searching for God's grace.

Christ is called upon in the first stanza, the Holy Spirit in the second stanza, the Father in the third stanza, and the Trinity in the final. It is sung in services and Royal weddings throughout many denominations.

LOVE DIVINE, ALL LOVES EXCELLING

HYMN #455

1. Love divine, all loves excelling, Joy of Heav'n to Earth come down, Fix in us thy humble dwelling, All thy faithful mercies crown; Jesus, thou art all compassion, Pure, unbounded love thou art; Visit us with thy salvation, Enter ev'ry trembling heart.

2. Breathe, O breathe thy loving Spirit Into ev'ry troubled breast; Let us all in thee inherit, Let us find thy promised rest; Take away our love of sinning; Alpha and Omega be; End of faith as its beginning, Set our hearts at liberty.

3. Come, Almighty to deliver; Let us all thy grace receive; Suddenly return, and never, Never more thy temples leave. Thee we would be always blessing, Serve thee as thy host above, Pray, and praise thee without ceasing, Glory in thy perfect love.

4. Finish, then, thy new creation; Pure and spotless let us be; Let us see thy great salvation, Perfectly restored in thee; Changed from glory into glory, Till in Heav'n we take our place, Till we cast our crowns before thee, Lost in wonder, love, and praise!

JESUS IS ALL THE WORLD TO ME

Text and Tune: Will L. Thompson (1847-1909)

SUNDAY, JANUARY 26, 2025

Born in East Liverpool, Ohio, Thompson was rejected in his early attempts to sell his songs to a commercial publisher. As a result, he started his own publishing company. This expanded to the sales of pianos, organs, and sheet music. As a composer, he boasted that he would always remember words or melodies that came to him at any time.

Jesus is all the world to me first appeared in the 1904 New Century Hymnal and is one of his most famous. It came to him during a time of personal struggle. The melody is simple, and often sung in a slow manner to allow worshippers to reflect and connect with the message of the song. The hymn's message of Jesus as the center of all things impacts believers who find comfort, strength, and hope in their faith.

JESUS IS ALL THE WORLD TO ME

HYMN # 349

1 Jesus is all the world to me, My life, my joy, my all; He is my strength from day to day, Without him I would fall: When I am sad, to him I go, No other one can cheer me so; When I am sad, he makes me glad, He's my friend.

2 Jesus is all the world to me, My friend in trials sore; I go to him for blessings, and He gives them o'er and o'er: He sends the sunshine and the rain, He sends the harvest's golden grain; Sunshine and rain, harvest of grain, He's my friend.

3 Jesus is all the world to me, And true to him I'll be; Oh, how could I this friend deny, When he's so true to me? Following him I know I'm right, He watches o'er me day and night; Following him by day and night, He's my friend

4 Jesus is all the world to me, I want no better friend; I trust him now, I'll trust him when Life's fleeting days shall end: Beautiful life with such a friend, Beautiful life that has no end; Eternal life, eternal joy, He's my friend
