Since opening its flagship location in Salem in 1984, Northeast Rehab has added three more acute rehabilitation hospitals located in Nashua, Portsmouth and Manchester. A Registered Dietitian Urges You to Ditch Dieting ... Forever by Kelsey McCullough, RDN, LD Registered Dietitian Nutritionist, Licensed Dietitian
A
s much fun as it is tracking every calorie that enters your mouth, ignoring bodily hunger signals because you’ve used up all your “points,” and excessively exercising to burn off calories … what if I told you there is another way? It’s not a detox, a magical protein shake or a pill. It is a new mindset, a practice rooted in self-love and trust. I’m referring to intuitive eating. No, this is not a diet, it’s actually the opposite. It is tuning back to our innate abilities to adequately eat, to listen to our bodies’ hunger and fullness cues, and say goodbye to the diet mentality forever. Recent research has found that about 90% of people who go on a diet will not be successful. Ironically, simply being on a diet puts you at a higher risk to gain more weight than someone who is not on a diet. Diets have also been linked to food and body preoccupation, slowed metabolism, reduced self-confidence and increased risk for eating disorders. Research shows that the current guidelines for treating
overweight and obese individuals with the good old-fashioned lifestyle change, i.e. dieting and exercise, is ineffective at longterm weight loss and it is not effective at preventing disease. Our bodies are innately able to tell us when we are hungry or full, and we are notorious for ignoring or overriding these signals. The body loses trust with the brain, and the brain loses trust with the body. When the body says, “hey, I’m hungry!” and you ignore that message by not eating, the body’s natural defense is to go into starvation mode. The body doesn’t know when it will get nourishment again, so it slows down how quickly you burn up calories (slows your metabolism). This is a primal reaction to not eating. Our bodies burn off less energy (or calories), so as we continue to reduce our food intake, the body becomes increasingly efficient. We then “fail” our diet, and resume eating as we once did, yet the metabolic damage is already done, and we quickly gain back the weight lost (if not more).

THE STRUGGLEBUS:
Our Road to Financial Freedom
I wish I could tell you a romantic, wanderlust kind of story about why we live in a school bus (and don’t get me wrong — the ability to take our home with us wherever we go is amazing) but our decision to “live tiny” was rooted in financial freedom. For a little back story, Thomas is a commercial diver and maple sugarer, I am a clinical registered dietitian and own a virtual private practice — oh, and we both sprinkle in some occasional bartending. I can’t forget our pup, Ellie, a goofball who’s tough as nails and an integral part of our decision to go tiny. As two mid-20-year-old people, we work our butts off. We both work full time, as well as a few part-time side hustles. We are paying off student loans, car payments, insurance, rent ... and even with decent jobs we were not putting away much money at all. I feel like most twenty-somethings can relate. We think about our parents, who by our age already owned homes, ran businesses, had children ... and here we are, barely scraping by. We decided that this “new norm” of working just to pay your bills was not going to cut it for us.
About 10 months, and approximately $10,000 later, we have our “Strugglebus.” A fitting name for our home as we had many hiccups along the way, as to be expected in any building project on a budget. Complete with ample solar power, 150 gallons of water storage, full shower, composting toilet (with privacy!), queen size bed, and propane heat — it is just enough for our little family. We get plenty of comments like “you guys are crazy!” “you’re living the dream!” and, of course, “you two are such hippies!” — but that’s to be expected when you live in a bus. I can’t help but think throwing away your money renting is actually the crazy way to live. If living in a home on wheels is your dream, then do it. I like to think Thomas and I are both a 50-50 split of a hippy and a savvy entrepreneur. The Strugglebus has allowed us to explore the country, save money, and live in something we built together. Our home is where you park it, and we have never felt more free, financially and otherwise.

A school bus was honestly an easy choice. We weren’t sure where we would want to live, so it would be ideal to be on wheels. We wanted something cheap and something we could create together, which is why we didn’t go the RV route. Thomas, being a jack-of-all-trades, liked the idea of having a vehicle that he could physically get under if anything were to happen to it. This eliminated city transit-style busses, which
are a great option for taller people. (Side note: It definitely helps when building a tiny home to have a partner who is basically a mechanicplumber-carpenter-extraordinaire.) School busses are incredibly affordable and plentiful; it only took us about three weeks to find our bus via Craigslist.

Yet dieters will blame themselves — and not the diet — for their failure, resulting in repeat business for the $60 billion-per-year weight loss industry. Talk about a great business model — an ineffective product that people use over and over again. Intuitive eating is based on 10 principals outlined in the book “Intuitive Eating: A Revolutionary Program that Works.” Written in 1995 by two registered dietitians, Evelyn
Tribole and Elyse Resch, and now in its third edition, this evidence-based book has forever changed the lives of many men, women and children. Each principal is a critical step to your journey of becoming an intuitive eater. 1) Reject the diet mentality. Stop believing that the next diet will be different. Get angry at their lies of fast, easy and maintainable weight loss. Set yourself free from diets. 2) Honor your hunger. Provide your body food at the beginning stages of hunger without

hesitation. Let your body start to regain the trust that if it is hungry, you will acknowledge this and feed it. 3) Make peace with food. Give yourself unconditional permission to eat any food. By restricting certain foods, we tend to binge on them. With unconditional acceptance to eat any foods, you will not feel the need to deprive and then “give in.” 4) Challenge the “food police.” Say a hard no to the food rules that pop into your mind
NUTRITION like “low-calorie is good,” or “desserts are bad.” Learn to replace the food police with the voice of your inner intuitive eater. 5) Feel your fullness. Listen to your body during and after your meal. Respect and trust it when it says you are no longer hungry. 6) Discover the satisfaction factor. Eat foods that you enjoy. Take pleasure in the eating experience. 7) Cope with your emotions without using food. Food is not a solution to feelings of loneliness, anger, stress, boredom, etc. It may provide a temporary numbing to pain, but overall can trigger worse feelings. Find ways to get to the root of the problem without food. 8) Respect your body. Our genetic make-up has a lot to do with our body shape and composition. Stop comparing your body to others around you, and treat your body with dignity.

Common Questions About Intuitive Eating
I am a diabetic — can I utilize intuitive eating? Absolutely! In fact, intuitive eating can work seamlessly with most medical nutrition therapy. In regard to diabetes specifically, the focus is still having unconditional permission to eat, while also being mindful of your blood sugars and the carbohydrate content of food. Too often diabetics try to cut out carbohydrates entirely, which is not healthy or sustainable.
9) Exercise — and feel the difference. Move your body because of how it feels, rather than doing it for looks, or calorie-burning effects. Do things that make your body feel good, energized and happy. This is a great way to motivate yourself to move, if you generally don’t consider yourself someone who likes exercise. 10) Honor your health with gentle nutrition. Eat things that make you feel good. Don’t put too much emphasis on nutrition at every meal. What you eat consistently over time is what matters. If this approach resonates with you, I highly recommend reading “Intuitive Eating: A Revolutionary Program that Works.” It is a great idea to work with a registered dietitian who specializes in intuitive eating to guide and support you along the journey. Intuitive eating can lead you to rediscovering the pleasure in eating, and foster healthy relationships with food and with your body, all while saying goodbye to dieting forever. SHNH
How can I raise my children to be intuitive eaters? Kids are born with the innate ability to eat intuitively. The best thing we can do is to keep that ability intact. Letting kids serve themselves, allowing them to assist in the kitchen, asking them what they would like to eat, not using the “clean plate” club, and not using food as a punishment or a reward would all be advisable. Kiddos learn best by mirroring their parents, so the easiest way to raise intuitive eaters is to work on your own relationship with food!
eat all foods, you will lose that “out of control” feeling. If you do eat a high amount of sweets, but can be mindful and connected to your body, you may notice it doesn’t make you feel well. That experience can be very helpful with making peace with food. When sweets become a normal food that you are able to enjoy when you feel like it, you will no longer crave them all the time. Can I lose weight with intuitive eating? It is impossible to say what will happen to your body weight by adopting intuitive eating. I have seen clients lose, stay the same or gain weight. Weight loss attempts need to be put on the back burner to truly commit to intuitive eating. If you try to purposefully lose weight with intuitive eating, you end up sabotaging yourself and turning intuitive eating into a diet. Your body will find its optimal set point weight, where it feels its best. Remember, research shows us that intentional weight loss attempts have an incredibly high failure rate, while lowering our metabolism and therefore increasing our weight set point. Letting go of the idea that you can completely control your weight is tough, but a very necessary part of the process.
How can I let myself eat what I crave? If I do that I’ll end up only eating sweets! Having rules around eating, designating “bad foods,” or avoiding foods (or food groups) leads to a deprivation response in the body. Cravings increase, hunger is more pronounced, even if ample food is being taken in. This usually will result in a food binge once you finally give in and eat the food you were avoiding.
