Positive Presence

From left: Susan Brown, manager of the 802Spirits section at Jelley's Market; Beverly Jelley, store owner and Brown's mother; Jess Perkins, Brown's daughter who assists at the store; and one of Perkins' sons, the fourth generation of the Jelley's Market family.

Jelley’s Market is a center of community in Londonderry

The sun won’t rise in Londonderry for another couple of hours, but Beverly Jelley is already at Jelley’s Market making coffee and breakfast sandwiches, hot doughnuts, cinnamon rolls, muffins and breakfast pizza.

The octogenarian has operated the store here since the 1990s, filling not just a need for convenience meals, but a place where you can find a familiar, friendly face.

“I start my day off by coming in at quarter to four and making the coffee and the breakfast sandwiches, and then having everything ready for when we open the door,” Jelley says. “It's those same faces you see every morning that come in the door. You say good morning to them, you make them a fresh cup of coffee and get their cigarettes or whatever else it is they need for the day. You tell them to have a good day, and they tell you to have a good day as well. Just being able to see those faces and to have that routine every day, that's important to me.”

Before opening in Londonderry, Jelley and her husband, Butch, operated a similar small store in Andover.

“This piece of property became available, and it was a gas station and an auto repair building at the time,” she says. “My husband, being a former race car driver and mechanically inclined, felt this was a good fit for him.”

They added a convenience store to the Londonderry building, and not long after, saw an ad that the state was seeking a licensee to run an

802Spirits agency store in the area. Jelley’s got the contract.

The store has evolved a lot in that time. Changing regulations led to the removal of the gas station pumps and tanks. The convenience store expanded its deli to include hot options like burgers and pizza, and cold options like sandwiches and salads, which complemented its spirits sales.

“This was our dream to have this store,” Jelley says. “We were lucky enough to be able to do it and to grow it to what it is today.”

Butch passed away about six years ago, and since then, the store has been run by Jelley and her daughter, Susan Brown, along with help from several local grandkids and great-grandkids.

Brown manages the 802Spirits section of the store.

“My daughter does all of the ordering, inventory control and checking in of all

the products when they arrive,” Jelley says. “She's very vigilant about what people in the area want. She does take special orders for people and tries to be very helpful. If they're looking for something, she'll help them find it, or she'll help them order it. She's got her finger pretty much on top of what we sell in this area, and I think that our inventory reflects the kind of stuff that we sell to the local people.”

As the only 802Spirits retailer within a 15-mile radius, the store needs to be able to serve not just its regulars but the visitors passing through, whether they’re skiing at Magic Mountain, leaf-peeping or exploring the gardens of Hildene.

“We have a section for Vermont spirits as well, front and center,” Jelley says.

Jelley’s Market has flooded twice in recent history: once during Hurricane Irene and again during the widespread flooding of 2023.

“My daughter called me on the morning

As the only 802 Spirits retailer within a 15-mile radius, the store needs to be able to serve not just its regulars but the visitors passing through.

of the flood and said, ‘Mom, it's bad. You probably ought to come and take a look,’” Jelley says. “I thought, ‘I don't know if I can do this,' because I'd always had the support of my husband with any big projects, and he was no longer here.”

But seeing the devastation of the community on her drive to the store changed her mind.

“I decided that we were going to put it back together again,” she says. “I knew there was a need for it in the area, and I feel a big obligation, as well as a love for this area, to be the store for the local people.”

Jelley’s care for her customers and consideration for her community had been crucial in having the community support the store through challenging times.

“We had five and a half feet of water in our store,” Jelley said. “We lost absolutely everything that we had in here. Everything

“It's
Beverly Jelley, who opened the store with her husband in 1990s.

was upside down and broken and ruined.”

Jelley said they faced about $300,000 in damages to the building, equipment, point-of-sale computers and mechanical systems. The electrician showed up that first day. A local man brought over a dumpster.

“Customers stopped in every day that we were here, plugging away, working on one project or another,” she says. “I have a sign hanging in my store above my cash register, a picture of Rosie the Riveter, and I crossed out ‘we can do it’ and put ‘we did it,’ and all of my employees and my family signed that sign, and it will hang here until I'm no longer here.”

The store was closed for five months, but when it reopened that fall, improvements were made to make it more resilient to future flooding. That way, Jelley’s can continue to serve the community.

“It's an important part of our community,” Jelley said. “We have some very loyal and dedicated customers and employees, for whom I'm very thankful. I just wouldn't want to be any other place, I don't think, than right where I am. This is home to me.”

Real-life Rom-com

s the calendar flips to December and the mountains become speckled with snow, direct-to-television movie channels begin their itinerary of romantic holiday films. You know the one: Upon returning home for the holidays, the high school sweethearts reconnect and rekindle the flame.

But then a major misunderstanding split them up. However, thanks to some meddling friends and family, all is sorted out, and everyone lives happily ever after by Christmas or New Year’s Eve. Among these movies’ similarities is that, while not always filmed in the state, many are set in Vermont towns.

If you are looking to add some romance to your holiday season this winter, here are some real-life Vermont destinations that will have you feeling like you’ve stepped onto a movie set.
