Saxtons River Distillery Christian Stromberg

At Saxtons River Distillery in Brattleboro, creating premiumquality spirits starts from sourcing fantastic ingredients and ensuring they are processed in the most efficient way.

“I like quality,” says Christian Stromberg, who founded Saxtons River Distillery in 2006 out of a barn at his home. The distillery has grown a lot since then, with two moves to ever-larger facilities, but the commitment to a greattasting product remains the same. “People are definitely seeking out better,” Stromberg says.

Saxtons River Distillery has three product lines: the founding Sapling maple products, Perc coffee liqueur and Snowdrop gin and vodka.

FAMILY MOTIVATION

Stromberg’s great-grandmother was a Lithuanian immigrant who came to Pennsylvania escaping the Russians. After her husband died young working as a coal miner, she took her nine children to Brooklyn, New York. She made Prohibition-era moonshine to support the family.

the street. He is also the one who encouraged Stromberg to start his own business.

Stromberg says his grandfather told him, “You’ll never make any real money working for someone else. They’ll make money off of you.”

Shenuski had himself started a factory making metal parts, where Stromberg worked for a time and which served as the impetus for earning an engineering degree at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. But after 15 years of working as an engineer, Stromberg went looking for a change and found it in Vermont.

SUPERB SPIRITS

During his college years, Stromberg had dabbled in hobby distilling. His grandfather had shared the family moonshine recipe, and while it got the job done in the 1920s, it wasn’t very good. However, after he built his distilling business in 2006, the fourth distillery in the state at the time, he did find inspiration in his heritage. There is a traditional Lithuanian liquor called Krupnikas, also known as Krupnik in Poland, that’s typically made with honey.

Stromberg added a Vermont spin to it, using locally sourced maple syrup, and Sapling was born.“There really wasn’t anything like it at the time,” Stromberg said. His Sapling products include a maple liqueur, a maple bourbon, a honey bourbon, a double-barrel maple bourbon and a maple rye. Out of the Sapling spirits, Stromberg says

the rye is one he particularly enjoys for its smoothness. “A lot of people aren’t rye drinkers because it’s too intense,” Stormberg says, but the maple helps mellow it out. Then, 11 years ago, Stromberg created the Perc coffee liqueur. He says he made something he would want to drink. “I like coffee,” he says. “I really enjoy it.”

At the time, many of the coffee liqueurs he was finding were “coffee-flavored” but not made with coffee. “There wasn’t anything on

the market that was authentic and real,” he says. It took some time to figure out the right beans and process. “Working with real coffee isn’t that simple,” he says, “What makes a good coffee doesn’t always make a good liqueur.” Perc is made with Peruvian beans that are roasted locally by Mocha Joes in Brattleboro.

Stromberg fills his car with 500 pounds of beans for a batch every few months. Using a 2-horsepower vintage industrial grinder that's about 80 years old, the beans are freshly ground at the distillery. Then, Saxtons River Distillery essentially makes a giant tank of cold brew. After, the coffee is blended with cane sugar. “The ingredients are fantastic,” Stromberg says.

The Perc that is available in 802Spirits agency stores is tank aged, and all the coffee grounds are filtered out. Some barrel-aged batches are available for sale exclusively at the distillery.

Though Perc came out more than a decade ago, coffee is having its moment now. “We’re ahead of it,” Stromberg says.

Perc has a bold coffee flavor with notes of caramel, baker’s chocolate and rose. It can be enjoyed on its own or as part of coffee cocktails, like the popular espresso martini. Saxtons River Distillery’s third product line is the Snowdrop Gin, which is made with 18 botanicals: coriander, juniper, thyme, star anise, cocoa, orris root, cardamom,

sarsaparilla root, rosemary, allspice, fennel seed, grains of paradise, orange peel, damiana leaf, caraway seed, anise seed and ginger.

“There’s a lot of great gins out there and ours is one of them,” Stromberg says.

The gin is made through a custom vacuum vapor distillation process, which is cooler than a standard distilling process, giving the spirit a

lighter and fresher taste. “I may not be the best at marketing, but our products are the best in their class,” Stromberg says.

TASTE TEST

The craft-distilling industry of Vermont has grown and changed a lot in the past two decades. Distilleries couldn’t have

tasting rooms or retail sales on-site when Saxtons River Distillery started, Stromberg says. Over time, he and other distillers lobbied for more flexibility in connecting with customers. “It’s changed quite a bit,” Stromberg said. “Vermont-made spirits are a big part of what Vermont sells now.”

Saxtons River Distillery now has two tasting rooms. One is at the site of the distillery, 155 Chickering Drive, Brattleboro, which includes an indoor space and an outdoor pavilion. Its Downtown Tasting Room and Mercantile is located at 2 Elliot St., Brattleboro.

They also have a mobile bar, which travels to catering events or to fairs like the Bennington Garlic Festival. Those spaces allow Stromberg to connect with his customers face-to-face. He says he enjoys meeting the people who seek out his products.

“People are fans and appreciate what we do and how we do it,” Stromberg says.

Pour boiling water, whiskey and honey into a mug. Add cloves, cinnamon and slice of lemon. Let mixture stand for 5 minutes before sipping.

¼ cup dark chocolate, melted

¼ cup graham cracker crumbs

Chocolate sauce

Ice

1 ounce chocolate liqueur

½ ounce vanilla vodka

1 ½ ounces heavy cream

3 mini marshmallows

Dip the rim of the glass in melted chocolate then into the graham cracker crumbs to coat. Swirl chocolate sauce along the inside of your glass.

Add chocolate liqueur, vanilla vodka and ice to cocktail shaker. Shake until well combined and the outside of the shaker is cold.

Add more ice to the prepared glass, then strain the cocktail into the glass. Pour heavy cream on top.

Top with three toasted mini marshmallows.

Vermont Cobbler

1 ounce Mad River Vanilla Rum

1 ounce sherry

¾ ounce Curacao

½ ounce simple syrup

¼ ounce lemon juice

Ice

Blueberries, raspberries and/or strawberries

Lemon slices

In a shaker, muddle 5 to 7 raspberries. Add rum, sherry, Curacao and simple syrup to shaker with ice. Shake for about 8 to 12 seconds.

Strain the contents into a glass over crushed ice. Garnish with fresh mint, berries and lemon slice.

1 cup orange juice

Peach slices

Pour the desired amount of sparkling wine into your glass, about halfway full.

Pour peach nectar and orange juice into a pitcher and stir to combine. Top each glass with the fruit mixture. Add more wine if desired.

1 cup ice

Add apples, oranges and sugar to a large pitcher and muddle for 45 seconds.

Add orange juice and brandy, and muddle again for about 30 seconds.

Add red wine and stir to incorporate, then taste and adjust flavor as needed.

Add ice and stir again to chill.

Serve and garnish with additional orange wedges.
