This year, the Book of Lists underwent a complete overhaul that will make both the print and online editions more dynamic for years to come. Partnering with Legendary Data, a software and data company based in Denver, Colo., we upgraded the technology we use to survey businesses and compile the rankings.
Our new system will allow us to more quickly update the data online to reflect merger and acquisition activity, leadership changes, company rebrandings and other news throughout the year.
We also have better tools to create additional business lists that might not appear in the print edition, offering our paying subscribers access to additional exclusive data.
The Book of Lists is still at its roots a book, and we’ve packed more information into it than ever before, featuring three more lists than the 2024 edition. New sidebar features in the margins offer quick hits that complement the rankings. Take it out for a test drive and enjoy the ride.

Planet Fitness
Planet Fitness named Colleen Keating as CEO in April 2024, following the exit of former chief executive Chris Rondeau, who was fired by the company’s board in 2023 after a 10-year run.
One of the first changes the Hampton-based company made under Keating’s leadership was to raise the price of monthly memberships from $10 to $15.
Sales were up 6% year over year in same store sales for the first quarter of 2025 that ended March 31, Planet Fitness reported in May. The company ended the quarter with 20.6 million members, an increase of 900,000, or about 4.6%. Net income increased $7.1 million to $42.1 million, compared to $35 million for the prior year period.
“Given the strength and durability of our model, we delivered this healthy growth against a backdrop of increasing volatility in the macro-economic environment,” Keating said.

Grappone Automotive Group
In April, Grappone Automotive Group announced it was selling its Toyota and Hyundai franchises as the company completes the transition into the fourth generation of family ownership.
The change came as Robert J. Grappone, whose grandparents founded the firm in 1924, decided to sell his ownership interest. The deal will leave his daughter Amanda Grappone Osmer with ownership of the Ford, Honda and Mazda franchises; the McGovern Auto Group is buying the Toyota and Hyundai franchises.
In honor of the company’s 100th anniversary, Osmer recently published a book she wrote about the company’s early years. “Grappone Automotive: The Founding” chronicles the family’s roots in Italy.
“Grappone Automotive is in my blood because of the determined Italians who came before me, but it is in my soul because of the things we’ve been able to accomplish as a team over the years,” Osmer wrote in the book’s introduction.

King Pine Ski Area
In September 2024, King Pine Ski Area announced that Shawn Taylor was joining the resort as its general manager. According to a press release, Taylor has been with King Pine since 1986, when he began as a seasonal employee and has been a year-round employee since 1996.
“Taylor’s diverse experience across the resort makes him exceptionally qualified to lead King Pine into its next chapter,” writes the company.
Taylor also brings to the role a sense of community, and wants King Pine to remain a family-oriented ski area.
One of Taylor’s initiatives has been to strengthen the resort’s ties to uphill skiing — King Pine recently joined the New England Uphill Multi-Pass. With its similarities to alpine skiing, Taylor expects the sport to gain popularity here, adding “We are a good starter mountain.”
According to the press release, King Pine Ski Area is an associate member of the Indy Pass, a physical as well as cloud-based pass that offers free lift tickets and discount days at its partner resorts.

Gunstock Mountain Resort
In April, Gunstock Mountain Resort named David Ulbrich as its mountain operations director.
In a press release, Gunstock President and General Manager Robert Drake said Ulbrich has a passion for the sport of skiing and its industry, writing, “David brings more than 20 years of mountain operations experience to Gunstock’s leadership team.”
Ulbrich was formerly the director of mountain operations at Sugarbush Resort in Vermont and was operations and assistant venue manager for Whiteface Mountain Ski Area in New York.
Drake noted that resort operators around New England face remaining challenges for which a steady hand is required.
“The mountain operations director position is critical to our continued success, and I believe he has the experience and skill set needed to lead our highly talented mountain operations team,” Drake said.
Gunstock Mountain Resort in Gilford opened in 1937. The resort was originally built by the Works Progress Administration, which stemmed from a facet of the new deal. At that time, it was called Belknap Mountain Recreation Area.

Wadleigh, Starr & Peters celebrated its 125th anniversary in 2024 with an event for close clients but not much hoopla, as previously reported in NH Business Review.
“We probably have one of the smallest marketing budgets in the city, and that’s kind of the way we like it,” said attorney Todd Hathaway, who joined the firm nearly 30 years ago. “The firm has done well for all these many years because of great word of mouth.”
The firm’s practice includes defense of professional liability and personal injury matters, municipal and education law, commercial and construction litigation, real estate, bonding and other transactional work, land-use litigation, trust and estate planning, criminal defense, family law and appellate work.
Founding partners David Taggart and George Bingham established Wadleigh, Starr & Peters in 1899 at the Kennard Building on 1008 Elm St. Since 1958, the firm has been headquartered at 95 Market St.

Summit Packaging
Summit Packaging, founded in 1976, is a leading global aerosol valve and actuator manufacturer and distributor based in Manchester, where it operates one of its five manufacturing plants. The company makes vertical action valves, tilt action valves, female valves, metered valves and bag-on-valves for popular consumer and industrial products.
Its other plants are in Wisconsin, the Netherlands, Poland and Argentina.
This company recently expanded the footprint of its European headquarters in the Almere, Netherlands, by 40%, strengthening its presence in the region.
Vertical integration is at the core of company’s business model, Summit says, with the only items purchased from other suppliers being a rubber gasket and ball bearing for ball valve applications. All other components are produced in-house from its own stock.

High Liner Foods
High Liner Foods, a Nova Scotia-based seafood processing company that operates a manufacturing plant in Portsmouth, announced a $55 million deal to acquire the Mrs. Paul’s and Van de Kamp’s frozen seafood brands from Conagra Brands.
The agreement includes approximately $36 million in inventory and was expected to close by the end of June 2025.
High Liner, which already co-manufactures the brands’ products, expects the deal to boost its U.S. retail market presence and secure long-term volume currently tied to an expiring contract, the company said in a news release.
The acquisition is projected to raise annual fish volume to 29 million pounds and generate about $4 million in incremental adjusted EBITDA in 2026, ramping up to $11 million by 2027. CEO Paul Jewer called the move a “strategic and compelling opportunity” to expand the company’s branded portfolio and retail reach. High Liner will fund the purchase through its existing credit facility.

EVR Advertising
Mackenzie Fraser was promoted to vice president and partner at EVR Advertising, based in Manchester. Fraser, the former vice president of marketing for the Manchester Monarchs, joined EVR in 2018 as an account executive and was promoted to account director in 2019. With her promotion to partner, Fraser became part of an ownership program headed by president and CEO Jeff Eisenberg and vice president Peter Ricci. EVR Advertising’s client roster focuses on senior living communities, as well as regional and health-care-based businesses that are rooted in New Hampshire, such as Irving Oil.
When interviewed by NH Business Review in 2004, Fraser noted that less than 1% of agencies in the U.S. are women-owned, but remained optimistic that the industry’s pace and environment, and her success in the field, would show others that women could do the role too.
“There’s no reason women can’t do it,” she told NH Business Review.

oHive
What’s in a name? On oHive’s website, president and CEO Zachary Gregg explained his company’s evolution, from International Office Suites to IOS Business Centers to oHive.
As International Office Suites, the company grew quickly, Gregg says, and the payoff was big.
“We sold out of our initial 30 offices in three months and quickly built out another 30 offices. By year two, we were looking at office space in downtown Portsmouth,” Gregg writes.
The decision in 2005 to change its name to IOS Business Centers came down to the rise of influential search engines and competition. They kept part of the original name as an acronym, and added “Business Centers.” It was a seamless transition because it “essentially went unnoticed,” he writes.
The company evolved and thrived even as the industry changed. This time, they chose the digital marketing agency
Vital to rebrand, using “hive” to suggest a strong community of hard-working employees, while the “o” simply stands for office.

Keene Sentinel
The Keene Sentinel has been here for more than 225 years, a resounding success amid the meteoric rise of technology and AI. But they are looking to the future to see how they exist in today’s digital environment. Its leaders have looked to the people around them — the community — to find a lifeboat. Their choices were to become a nonprofit, create an endowment or seek a hybrid existence, which would involve joining up with a sponsor as a way to receive donations that were tax-deductible while remaining a nonprofit.
The Sentinel decided on the latter hybrid idea, and in January of 2025 launched The Keene Sentinel Local Journalism Fund. The newspaper also created an advisory board comprising community members.
According to a NiemanLab story about the newspaper’s decision, Terry Williams, the Sentinel’s former president, is helping with strategy. Leaders hope the fund will cover 8% of operating costs this year.
Williams says this approach views journalism as a “community service” and not to simply profit.

In 2024, the Berlin Reporter, which had been in existence for the last 125 years, merged with the Coos County Democrat.
According to an October 2024 story by the Keene Sentinel, the two papers are now part of Salmon Press Newspapers LLC, comprising 11 weekly newspapers around the state.
The last issue for the paper was Aug. 28, 2024. Salmon Press Executive Editor Brendan Berube said the merger became effective Sept. 1.
According to the Sentinel’s story, people who subscribed to the Reporter would receive the Coos County Democrat, which then began to include press releases and information from Berlin’s coverage area. Through social media, some readers at the time said they were not given any notice that the Reporter was closing.
In 1994, the Berlin Reporter, who was owned by Howard James at the time, began publishing five days a week in direct competition with the Berlin Sun.
“For a while it was an old-fashioned newspaper war,” said Berlin Sun Publisher Mark Guerringue, a native of Berlin.

BAE Systems is New Hampshire’s largest manufacturing employer. Its nearly 6,500 employees in the state are spread out over four locations: Nashua, Manchester, Merrimack and Hudson.
The bulk of the defense contractor’s employees in the Granite State are based in Nashua, where the company operates two locations: its Electronic Systems headquarters and its microelectronics center.
A page on BAE Systems’ website dedicated to its jobs in New Hampshire reads like a calling card for the state, promoting access to beaches, mountains and lakes “all just an hour away,” as well as the company’s proximity to Boston.
“New Hampshire, of the original 13 colonies, has a rich history and is now a thriving center of innovation with booming technology, manufacturing and health care industries, making it an exciting place to work.”

Wentworth by the Sea
Wentworth by the Sea has been attracting visitors to New Castle since 1874. The state’s oldest seaside resort, which opened as an 82-room inn called the Wentworth House, hosted Russian and Japanese delegates during war peace talks in 1905, as the hotel notes on its website: “While formal negotiations occurred at the nearby naval shipyard, the hotel also served as a venue for numerous informal discussions.”
Beginning in 1980, the property was shuttered for nearly 20 years. In 1999, the nonprofit The Friends of the Wentworth found a new owner, who reopened the hotel in 2003 and ushered in its current heyday as a luxurious destination for lodging, weddings and public events. The Wentworth, with 14,000 square feet of meeting space, can accommodate up to 500 people.

Waterville Valley Resort
In 2010, the Sununu family led a group of local investors that completed the purchase of Waterville Valley Ski Area from California-based Booth Creek Resorts.
The deal included Waterville Valley Ski Area, Waterville Valley Nordic Center, Waterville Valley Conference Center and Town Square.
Chris Sununu, a former environmental engineer, became Waterville Valley Ski Resort’s chief executive. He left that job in 2016 to make a successful bid to run for governor.
“My family has been coming to Waterville Valley for 30 years and several of us have homes there,” Sununu said in 2010.
“We want to preserve what is so special about Waterville Valley and at the same time begin to invest in the mountain to ensure the best possible skiing experience.”
Sununu’s father, former Gov. John H. Sununu, who also was former President George H.W. Bush’s chief of staff, was among the investors.

Concord Chamber of Commerce
Greater Concord Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Tim Sink announced he would step away from the role at the end of the current fiscal year, which ends Sept. 30, 2025. At his departure, Sink will have spent nearly 33 years as the Chamber’s leader.
A story announcing Sink’s departure noted several accomplishments during his tenure. As its leader, Sink doubled the chambers’ membership and launched several programs, including Leadership Greater Concord, Capital Area Student Leadership, the Concord Young Professional Network (CYPN), and Creative Concord.
Sink also worked with local leaders on several community initiatives, like the Horseshoe Pond redevelopment and a Main Street renovation in downtown Concord, as well as art and promotion initiatives to promote Concord as a tourist destination.
A committee to find Sink’s replacement was scheduled to be appointed in the fall by Chamber board chair Larry Haynes, president of Grappone Automotive Group.

The health care landscape in Greater Manchester changed dramatically this year when the city’s nonprofit Catholic hospital was acquired by a for-profit entity that is the largest hospital company in the United States.
In February, HCA Healthcare acquired Catholic Medical Center in Manchester. Financial details were not fully disclosed. HCA has committed to investing over $300 million in CMC over the next five to seven years, including funding for capital improvements, technology upgrades, physician recruitment and community health initiatives.
CMC officials said the deal will help the hospital navigate financial and workforce pressures while expanding access to care. HCA Healthcare, which operates more than 180 hospitals nationwide, said it will honor CMC’s Catholic identity and charitable mission.

Reilly, who joined the company in 2014, has more than 20 years of leadership experience across multiple industries. St. Mary’s Bank
A historical marker designating St. Mary’s Bank as the nation’s first credit union is the only such marker in New Hampshire that is printed in both English and French. It reads: “The first credit union in the U.S. was founded here in 1908, the inspiration of Monsignor Pierre Hevey, the pastor of Sainte-Marie Parish. Monsignor Hevey sought to improve the economic stability of the French-speaking mill workers by giving them a safe and welcoming place to save and borrow money. Until 1913 the credit union was located here in the home of attorney Joseph Bolvin, its first president and manager. Initially open just evenings and holidays, the credit union grew to become one of the state’s most stable financial institutions.”

ADP
According to the 2025 ADP National Employment Report, private sector employment rose in May by about 37,000 jobs. Annual pay was also up 4.5% year-over-year.
Chief economist at ADP Dr. Nela Richardson says, although hiring may be slowing, pay growth remains strong.
“After a strong start to the year, hiring is losing momentum. Pay growth, however, was little changed in May, holding at robust levels for both job-stayers and job-changers,” says Richardson in a press release.
The ADP National Employment Report, produced by ADP Research and Stanford Digital Economy Lab, looks independently at the private-sector labor landscape using anonymized and aggregated payroll data from more than 25 million U.S. employees.
Given that ADP’s payroll databases are always being updated, ADP’s report gives a granular look at these employment numbers. According to the press release, ADP’s Pay Insights measure collects nearly 14.8 million pay change observations monthly. That number is up from 10 million when the measure first launched.

PROCON begins construction on Mark Stebbins Community Center
Construction started in spring 2025 on the Mark Stebbins Community Center, a privately funded facility on Manchester’s West Side designed to support children and families. The center was named in honor of longtime New Hampshire philanthropist Mark Stebbins, chairman and chief executive officer of PROCON. Stebbins, who died in 2021, was the third generation to lead the family business in its 90-year existence.
The center, expected to open in fall 2026, will host nonprofits like Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Manchester and Amoskeag Health, offering accessible after-school care, health services, meeting spaces and community programs. An M&T Bank-supported “Empowerment Resource Center” will provide digital tools and financial literacy initiatives.
Major contributions from local donors and a planned endowment ensure sustainable operation. A capital campaign is underway.
