ON THE COVER A wide variety of people throughout the school have stepped up and gone out of their way to help others. I thought that, if I acknowledge a few people for their work, maybe other people would step up and help out when needed.

The idea behind this photo was to take the idea of “stepping up” and put it into a literal sense. I found it to be very symbolic and in a way it just adds more to the story.

The McHenry Messenger Mission Statement Student journalists have the right to exercise freedom of speech and the press in school-sponsored media. The McHenry Messenger is a byproduct of these rights. We hope to use this platform to inform and engage the students and staff of McHenry High School as well as its broader community.

As a student-driven publication, it is important to us that we represent every group within both campuses, provide a platform for them to speak their truth, and ensure access to objective, relevant information that they need to know.

As we strive to fulfill our journalistic mission, we recognize that learning and growing through our experiences as reporters, writers, and editors is a core aspect of what makes this a student publication. When we make mistakes, our organization is prepared to take responsibility for the stories we publish and hold ourselves accountable.

Finally, despite the difficulties presented by these unprecedented times — which includes a global pandemic — our student newspaper intends to meet the same high standard of journalism as any other school year.

Both the McHenry Messenger’s print and digital editions have been established as designated forums for student editors to inform and educate their readers as well as for the discussion of issues related to their audience. Though the student media advisor is responsible for teaching students sound journalism skills and judgment, this paper does not engage in prior review and, thus, all content published by both editions of the McHenry Messenger reflects only the views of the student staff and not school officials or the school itself (unless attributed accordingly).

With several weeks into second semester, plenty of things have changed for us at the McHenry Messenger. This semester we welcomed several new writers into our staff — including freshmen. Some leadership roles have also shifted within our publication, but rest assured; our passion for informing our readers remains.

For the past few weeks, the McHenry Messenger has worked hard to bring you this third print issue. Our slightly bigger staff means more opportunities to share news, features, and opinions with you.

We hope that these articles inform, entertain, and spark conversation among our readers.

In this issue, we attempt to clarify any confusion surrounding students’ mandatory AIM period and the “No Fly Zone.” We also delve into more exciting topics, like a community project that will combine efforts of MCHS students, community leaders and local businesses.

Other stories focus on certain individuals who we feel deserve more recognition. Serving as our cover story, you will find a feature on MCHS students and staff who step up and make our community a better place. You will also discover what it is like to be a special education student and what it is like to be a sports manager.

In the arts and entertainment section, we delve into the media by discussing banned books — which is currently a hot topic in the United States — and by celebrating Black voices through books and literature. Lastly, we shed light on how the media can glamorize addition and tragedy, even though they shouldn’t.

It is my pleasure to introduce to you the third print issue of the McHenry Messenger. Join us as we celebrate our growth and welcome new writers — including freshmen — into our staff.

News Since the end of January, students have been asked to remain in class during the first five minutes of AIM at the Upper Campus, which administrators call a “No Fly Zone,” in an effort to crack down on class cuts.

New AIM rules cause confusion and frustration Freedom Tomasello Staff Writer One month into semester two, administration announced a new set of rules around students’ mandatory AIM period.

These rules were put in place with hopes to improve student attendance and give teachers easier class periods. The new set of rules caused confusion among teachers and students.

Through an email sent out on Jan. 31, administration introduced the “No Fly Zone.” This is a five minute period at the start of each class where students are not allowed to leave their classroom.

With the introduction of this rule came confusion. The email sent

Administration introduced the “No Fly Zone” in hopes to approve attendance and curb class cuts out to students versus the one sent to teachers allowed for many mixed thoughts. Many didn’t understand the “No Fly Zone: or how the rule was meant to work.

“If AIM is supposed to allow us to get help from teachers, how are we supposed to have enough time to work with time getting taken away?” says MCHS student Amanda Miles.

Another student, Olivia Vernooy, adds, “The No Fly Zone is punishing students due to others cutting, even if they weren’t involved.”

While the “No Fly Zone” has upset and confused some students, administration has high hopes for the outcome of the rule.

“I hope that this will help everyone in the building gain some semblance of order in the building,” states MCHS principal Dr. Jeff Prickett. “With the end goal being that we can help our young adults with the responsibility of having certain freedoms. “ Although the restrictions were set in place with good intentions, some are concerned staff will continue to ignore these new rules and fail to better explain them.

“The plan to help confusion is to continue reiterating to everyone what the procedures are,” states Prickett. “Over time, with practice, people begin to understand and confusion starts to turn clear.”

MCHS announces community renovation project at Miller Point MCHS students and staff are working on blueprints, logos, and business plans for new community project

In the spring of 2023, MCHS construction students are set to build ten tiny commerce shops at Miller Point in downtown McHenry. Engineering, graphics, and business students are involved in “The McHenry Riverwalk Shoppes” project as well.

The idea for this project was born after Assistant Superintendent of Learning & Innovation Carl Vallianatos drove through the Batavia Boardwalk Shops, located an hour away from McHenry. After researching, he learned that Batavia had partnered with their high school to create the village-like cluster of tiny shops.

He proposed the idea of creating similar shops in McHenry to MCHS staff and to the McHenry Area Chamber of Commerce, who loved the idea. Construction instructor Dan Rohman and engineering instructor Russ Micklinghoff then recruited students into the community project.

“The goal from the beginning, from my perspective,” states Vallianatos, “has always been to see how many students can get behind [the project] and be a part of actually creating [the shops].”

The McHenry Riverwalk Shoppes will be financed with proceeds from the R.I.S.E. Up Foundation’s “Splash Into Country” music festival that will take place on a week before homecoming. Country musicians Dustin Lynch and Brad Paisley will be the headliners for the Sept. 16 and 17 respectively.

Currently, and for the next few months, construction students are working on blueprints for the shops alongside WOLD Architects & Engineers, who assisted in building the new Upper Campus wing. “[Getting to work with WOLD] is a really cool experience,” states construction student Kyle Lindquist. “I don’t really like doing blueprints and all that stuff, but it’s nice to be able to see how [architects] do it from a different perspective.”

Rohman adds, “I love the fact that [the construction students] get to work with engineers and architects, so that they get to see not just the construction or skilled trade side of it, but also the planning process. Maybe that will open some thoughts…that they hadn’t

curriculum.

When the shops are built, small business owners who do not have their own stores yet will be able to rent a tiny shop for a season.

“One of the requirements of the business owners will be to participate in multiple workshops that will help them grow their business,” states the R.I.S.E Up Foundation on a Facebook comment. “Supported by the McHenry Area Chamber, the City of McHenry, and other shop owners, these businesses are in a strong position to succeed.”

According to Vallianatos, there will be opportunities for MCHS students to run a tiny shop and work with the McHenry Area Chamber of Commerce.

“This is real,” states Micklinghoff. “It’s partnering with people that actually do this for work and getting that practical experience. I just don’t know how education could be any more valuable.”

The McHenry Riverwalk Shoppes are part of a larger renovation project to transform Miller Point in downtown McHenry. The goal is to increase opportunities for family interaction and to create a space for the community to enjoy, according to a R.I.S.E. Up Foundation Facebook post.

“Any city could raise money and hire contractors to build these things,” states Vallianatos, “but it’s being able to provide these real world experiences where students are actually working with the adults to create something really awesome for their town that is fun to watch.”

Aside from construction students, Micklinghoff’s engineering students were also recruited for this project. At this time, they are also working alongside WOLD Architects & Engineers on blueprints.

“We are doing the designing for the project,” states engineering student Mikey Clingingsmith, “creating blueprints using AutoCAD and SketchUp to get the foundation for what the [shops] are going to look like.”

According to Micklinghoff, there is a learning curve in doing blueprints, as MCHS no longer offers classes on architectural drafting. Because of this, his students are set to meet with architects to learn first-hand from them.

“I think [working with architects] is really cool to use as a resume builder, to help with getting into college and scholarships,” states engineering and graphics student Kaylie Kopsell. “It’s really cool to be working on such a big project at a young age, to be able to say you helped with it.”

In the spring and/or summer, the construction students will build a prototype of the tiny shops at the Upper Campus, according to Vallianatos.

Graphics and business students from Matthew Connor and Vanessa Kirk’s classes are also playing a role in the community project. Graphics students are currently designing logos for the shops. The business students are working on marketing strategies and ways to incorporate the project into their

Censoring books has a historical precedent, usually to keep a population of people ignorant and control knowledge. So why is book banning making such a resurgence in states like such as Tennessee, Wyoming and Florida?

Banning books bans education Alayna Majkrzak Opinions Editor A student walks into a library, and their eyes immediately catch on a sign that says “most challenged books of 2020.”

The books that are listed are some of their favorites. “To Kill a Mockingbird,” “Speak,” and “The Hate U Give.” These books all taught this student a valuable message in their life, something that they’ve held onto and cherished. So, why do people want to ban them? After all, to many people these books are on their way to becoming classics or already are classics.

Book banning is common, not just the US but in many places around the world. According to The First Amendment Encyclopedia, book banning is the most common form of censorship in the United States. The banning of controversial books takes them off of the shelves in libraries, book stores, and even schools reading lists. This effectively stops people from seeing the content that is deemed controversial. Graphic violence, disrespect, and sexually explicit content are common themes for which books are banned. This shelters kids from content that is deemed “unacceptable” and harms students ability to understand the harsh reality of certain situations.

by Harper Lee is based on real challenges that people of color have faced. Yet, it is one of the most banned and challenged books every year due to it’s themes that provide graphic descriptions of racism.

These descriptions show a reality that many people face and provide others who have never had to face those hardships that are faced by others a new perspective.

Books that are banned are often challenged because of themes revolving around racism or LGBTQ+ issues. A lot of times these books are actually providing representation for those minority groups.

Representation is important for the people who are not commonly seen in the media, and it can help them find the people who they relate to and those who have had similar struggles. If people don’t have representation they can find it hard to fit in and a lot of banned books can help them find solace and a community they relate to.

Banned books that are banned for discussing ideas such as racism, religion or for challenging authority are still important. These books provide a chance for people to become educated on certain

topics and start up conversations on topics that can be hard to bring up. It provides a gateway to start these conversations, and allows these conversations to become more normalized and easier to spark a change in society.

Many people who justify banning books, say that it’s because they are too graphic and not suited for anyone to read, especially not younger audiences.

Even if the books are graphic and not suited for younger audiences, taking them off the shelves stops information about important topics from being spread to any audience, not just younger audiences. If no one is able to get educated on a topic that is harmful to some, there will never be anyone there to change it because it hasn’t been discussed.

Banning books is very common, but it is also censorship. This censorship is harmful to all populations because it stops valuable conversations from taking place.

These books that discuss hard topics are actually more important than others, due to the fact it can lead to the education and betterment of others. Banning books due to their content shouldn’t happen, because there is a difference between hate speech and hard conversations.

Choose safety over comfort With MCHS no longer requiring masks there are more students than ever choosing their own personal comfort over the safety of their peers and staff A student wearing a mask stumbles through the school halls that are full of students. Desperately trying to avoid contact with COVID-19 because of an ill family member at home, they become more worried in the environment they’re supposed to learn in. Not wearing a mask doesn’t help stop the spread of COVID-19. Rather, it’s an unsafe idea that was forced upon Illinois schools.

As of Feb. 4, 2022, a court ruling in Springfield resulted in a temporary restraining order which restricts Governor J.B. Pritzker from enforcing many of his earlier COVID-19 policies. These include policies that require masks for all students, teachers, staff and visitors and quarantine for close contacts, as well as requiring mandatory vaccinations or COVID-19 testing for school employees.

This lawsuit was brought to Illinois schools by parents who pay for their children to attend; this case is still open and has a chance to reinstall safety measures schools can take to keep their students and staff safe.

It’s been proven that not wearing a mask in public is unsafe for the individual not wearing one, as well as the general population. Beyond this common knowledge, the CDC states, “If you are up to date with your COVID-19 vaccines, to maximize protection and prevent possibly spreading COVID-19 to others, wear a mask indoors in public if you are in an area of substantial or high transmission.”

MCHS is a public high school that requires two campuses to hold all of the students; it ensures student and staff safety to enforce simple protocols that can prevent the spread of COVID-19 throughout the campuses in massive numbers. No schools want to shut down again, and most students didn’t prefer or had more trouble with online learning. However, if this new restriction to enforcing masks is here to stay, it’s likely MCHS, as well as surrounding schools in this district will have to return to e-learning. This is due to the high transmission rates in populations that do not wear their masks.

Along with revoking governor Pritzker’s’ power to enforce wearing masks in District 156, they have also revised quarantining policies. Students and staff are not required to quarantine (which was earlier reduced to only 5 days of isolation) if they come into close contact with an individual that currently has COVID-19. This means anyone that comes into contact with someone who happens to have COVID-19 does not need to be quarantined or wear a mask, and can walk into their school building if they choose to. This will not provide adequate safety precautions to help keep students and staff safe.

There is no physical benefit from changing the mask mandate to being just a mask recommendation, it may be evident that a possible motive to these lawsuits against the state have to do with political feelings

Although masks are still required on school buses due to close proximity of people, this doesn’t change the fact that students are still sitting close to each other during classes from 40 to 45 minutes at a time; and get to choose whether they want to wear a mask or not. In most cases, the CDC recommends everyone wear a mask. Some exceptions include a person with a disability who cannot safely wear a mask for reasons related to that disability, and children under two years old. This mask mandate should be enforced again specifically for the protection of others at MCHS who may not be able to wear a mask.

Some individuals may argue that it’s their choice now to decide what works for them in regards to masks, quarantines, and testing. Although in other circumstances it’s best to take care of yourself before others; in terms of a pandemic, it’s more about keeping the people around you safe. Everyone wants this pandemic to be over, so it’s time to be more thoughtful about the decisions being made for the betterment of the communities that are affected by the court ruling.

Only by being proactive will there be improvements in the number COVID-19 cases in the future. Though, as long as people continue to choose comfort over safety, it’s going to be harder to overcome and move past this pandemic.

No small step

During a pandemic, with the absence of staff, many students, staff members, and parents have stepped up and taken on challenges to make sure school runs smoothly Kyla Henige Features Editor

Ty Linker

Many students have taken on different roles to help school run smoothly, but also to help the community. One of these students is senior Ty Linker.

Linker believes in standing up for others and shows his leadership through his actions. “If I see someone in the school degrading others, ‘acting a fool’ in the bathrooms, or using foul language, I assert myself over them by talking to them, and I say, ‘Hey, you’re lucky I’m not a teacher or there would be disciplinary action.”

Part of why students and teachers appreciate Linker is because of his laid back attitude. In a informal freshman class poll, 87% of students said they respect him because he is laid back, but is still stern.

Linker partakes in Leadership in Action, a class that builds leadership skills to use both in school and the outside world. John Lunkenheimer, who teaches the class, has seen Linker step up and be a leader.

“Ty Linker has grown as a leader and young man throughout this school year.

Ty is a unique individual who has his own way of doing things, but he genuinely cares. He may be unorthodox but that is what helps him make an impact.”

Besides school, Linker is active in his community. He has enlisted in the Marines and coaches youth football. Linker reads a variety of leadership books, and uses the lessons in them to teach his players.

“I gave [my football players] a leadership book, where the author preaches leadership, so that they have a form of guidance to be leaders, even when I am not physically present.”

Like many other MCHS students, Linker is also inspired by principal Dr. Jeff Prickett. “I look at people like Dr. P, and I want to contribute as much as possible, even in my corner of the world, so I can at least make my corner of the world a better place. So that’s why I look up to Prickett.”

Linker’s attitude and actions have inspired and touched many students and teachers, and he hopes to leave a lasting legacy.

Shaniah Duff

When former social studies teacher Natalie Murphy stepped down from her position last semester, a spot opened, and a teacher was needed to fill the teaching position. The teacher that filled that position as Shaniah Duff.

Duff is a social studies teacher and teaches electives such as Sociology.

Taking on multiple classes can be hard for new teachers, especially when they come half way through a school year.

“The most difficult part about jumping into this position halfway through the year was that I had to teach three new classes that I had never taught before,” explains Duff, “and I only had two weeks to figure out a curriculum, assignments, assessments, the syllabus, and everything else for the semester.”

Duff has been an active member of the Army National Guard for eight years now, and although her primary job in the Guard is to be a medic, Duff has always known that she wanted to be a teacher.

“I actually knew I wanted to be a teacher before I joined the Army,” she says. “I joined the Army for a lot of reasons, but really what I wanted to do was give back...] I always knew I wanted to help people and give back to the community, which I knew I could do through both the military and being a teacher.”

From all her experiences, both growing up, and in the Gaurd, Duff has become an excellent leader, and shows her leadership through equality, and dedication.

“I’m always willing to put in the extra time, so I get here early everyday,” Duff says, “and I stay here late everyday, just because I have things to do, and I want to get them done. And to be honest if I don’t get it done here, I’m not going to get it done at home.”

“On top of that,” she chuckles, “I try and hold everyone to the same standards, and I try not to show favoritism, and I try to be very understanding, and I think that is really important in leadership.”

Tracy Tobin

Due to the recent resignation of band director Alyssa Arkin, substitute and parent Tracy Tobin helped to direct the band and continuously lead them to success. When Tobin heard the band needed a director, she stepped up immediately Tobin has had two kids in the band program, so she knew the kids needed a leader who had experience with getting things done and staying on top of things. “I have been involved in the band program for seven years,” she says, “so I kind of know how things run, and I wanted to jump in to make sure everything that needed to be done got done.”

Tobin explains that she not only stepped up because they needed a substitute, but because band and is very important for the school. “I didn’t want the kids to lose hope in the program,” she says, “and what it has the potential to be. So ultimately, I wanted to be there to help guide the kids and give them hope that the band program would continue to grow and thrive.”

“Mrs. Tobin stepping up as a substitute served as a [much]-needed reminder that the entire community has our back,” explains senior Kristina Robinson.

Oftentimes, arts programs are perceived as only being by the director-run. That can be true sometimes, but there is generally an extensive support system that does a lot of “behind the scenes” work. “Mrs. Tobin was and still is an integral part of this,” Robinson adds.

“She stepped in at the beginning of last semester and was really the glue that held things together for a while. We are all so grateful to have her here, and we honestly would not be the same without her.”

Through her leadership in the band — and with help from students and other subs — there were still rehearsals, and students became even more in love with band, seeing that they came together. The overall take away from Tobin’s experience, was to inspire others to be leaders.

“I would like the take away to be — get involved when you can!” Tobin concludes.

“Help when you can! Use your actions to let other people know they are important!”

Features 504 plans and IEPs are lists of special accommodations that students with special needs receive in order to level the academic playing field. But many “mainstream” students don’t even know that such plans exist and what they are for.

A student takes a deep breath before stepping out of her car and heading into school. She has an anxiety disorder, making everyday things seem extremely taxing. The only reason she’s able to make it through the day at school is because of the accommodations she has through her 504 plan.

A 504 plan is a modified education plan to help students with physical or mental disabilities have more equal opportunities to learn.

“It’s like an extra help type of thing,” says sophomore Maddi Wagner, “like extra add ons you can have.”

These accommodations, like those given to special education students in an Individualized Education Program, allow students to have a more equal opportunity to learn in their school environment, despite whatever physical or mental disability they may have.

“I was allowed to do certain things that other students could not,” says junior Thomas Rosegay. “I was allowed to get up and move around without being reprimanded. I could chew gum in classes where it wasn’t allowed.

I was given extra test time…and they were kind of more lenient on me talking out of turn because of ADHD.”

504 plans are set to fit students’ individual needs and diagnosis. The accommodations tailor to what makes the most sense for each person’s situation.

Social worker Margaret Mitchell says, “When were deciding on accommodations for the students, we have to look at it in relation to the reason they have a 504. So let’s say a student is experiencing some anxiety, but that’s not what their 504 plan is for. We can’t necessarily add accommodations in that would specify anxiety if we don’t have that documented as one of the reasons they have a 504 plan.”

There is a process that students must go through in order to get a 504 plan, as it does involve medical information and parental approval.

Mitchell says, “We always ask for documentation of the disability or reason they have a 504 first…It typically will result in having an official 504 evaluation meeting. Typically. The school psychologist is involved and does a few more in-depth questions, we have a coordinator there as well.”

However, this long process can be worth it to those who need these accommodations to thrive in the school environment.

“I think, primarily, from the social-emotional aspect, a lot of students

are relieved and more comfortable,” says Mitchell, “when they realize that they can take breaks as needed or that they have someone that’s always available for them to check in with.”

Of course there can be some downsides to these plans, whether it be the process of getting one in place or even after the plan is in place.

“A lot of teachers don’t listen to it or follow it, and when I do tell them I have a 504 and that I need the extra time they won’t give it to me,” says Wagner.

Issues like this can be solved through following up with the student’s case manager, allowing them to remind teachers of the students’ accommodations.

“There can definitely be pushback, I think, any time you are advocating for the needs of an individual,” says Mitchell, “especially when you’re advocating for the needs of a minor or someone who can’t really advocate for themselves.”

But for most students, dealing with the process of getting the plan and any push-back along the way is worth it. This allows them to feel more comfortable at school, and it gives them more access to an equal education that everyone deserves.

Advancing athletics Mackenzie Sroka Sports Editor Joel Beard will replace MCHS’s current athletic director Barry Burmeister after he retires at the end of the school year. Beard has already begun his transition here after being officially hired in January.

When deciding on a new athletic director, MCHS administrators took many factors and opinions into consideration.

“I put together three interview teams,” explained Dr. Jeff Prickett, principal at MCHS. “There was a parent and the student athlete team, a coach team, an administrator team, and each candidate went through all three rounds of interview.

Then I met with each one at the end, and we discussed the kind of qualities we were looking for.”

Administrators were looking for certain characteristics and ideals to bring to the position, including “a wealth of experience and different types of experiences,” says Prickett. “We wanted someone who was going to really be invested in the community and invested in the experience of our student athletes — somebody who is going to put the fact that these kids are students first, an athlete second,” explained Prickett.

While many of the candidates had these ideals, Beard set himself apart from the other candidates. “He was very confident in how he talked about athletics and student development,” Prickett added. “He talked about feeder programs, the younger Volume Three | Issue Three | February 2022

The job felt like a good fit for Beard as well. “It is a good time for change for me and looking into McHenry things just lined up with who I am and what I would like to do.”

Along with experience, Beard will also bring more diversity with him to MCHS. “He’s our first black male athletic director,” described Prickett. “We don’t have too many people of color working the district, so the fact that he happens to be an African-American male is important to other kids. The fact that coach Beard applied for this job, and it turned out to be that our top candidate made it even better.

I’m thrilled to death that he brings work with equity and diversity into our into our organization.

Beard is excited to bring this to the community and to be the first African-American athletic director. “It is pretty cool,” explained Beard. “It is a sign of where McHenry is and that it’s moving forward with open minds about things, so I’m looking forward to being a part of it.”

Beard will continue to transition into this position in preparation for next school year. “I have been in constant communication with Mr. Beard and have met with him in person a few times since he

was hired,” described Barry Burmeister, the current athletic director. “I will offer him to come and shadow a few days in the spring as well, in order to facilitate a smooth transition. I will also be taking him to one of our Fox Valley Conference athletic director’s meetings to meet the other conference athletic directors and to see the inner-workings of the Fox Valley Conference.”

“He will be doing all of the duties of an athletic director,” Burmeister added “plus he and I will be hiring the new football coach together for next year, as well as, ushering in the new f=turf football field and new track at McCracken [Field].”

Beard has goals he has set for the athletic department and himself in the short and long term once he is instated as the athletic director. “My first goals are to increase our social media presence,” he said, “try to get to know a lot of the students, student athletes and coaches, and just looking at the things that we are doing right now and learning those the operations of what we do to grow as a department together.”

Transiting to a new athletic director will be difficult, but Beard plans to make it as easy as possible. Beard was hand picked by students, staff, administrators, and others in order to have the best possible new athletic director. MCHS hopes will bring many new things to the school, while keeping and growing the good things in the department.

Talk to the manager Though sometimes unappreciated, managers for each of MCHS’s sports help their teams closer to success As Carly Bondinus, a varsity wrestling manager, watches the wrestlers compete, she records their matches and writes their statistics. During tournaments, she and fellow wrestling managers record up to 150 videos and statistics for team. They go match to match and meet to meet making sure that they do every they can to support the team.

Managers are needed by most of MCHS’s athletics, and some have a who separate team to support them.

Other wrestling managers include Rachel Gorham, Annie Trinh, Brandylen Pasternock and Marissa Maddock, for example. They work together and help run the show.

Some managers take track care of uniforms, at home meets they will be running times and stats, as well as the team’s roster delivering them back and forth between teams.

Going to the matches, tourna-

ments and meets takes a lot of respect from the managers towards the team and the sport in order to keep up with it.

The long hours require lots of dedication.

“Wrestling is one of the strongest teams, that is strongly understood and respected,” Bodinus describes, “so it takes a lot of Saturdays and Sundays that can be really long.”

The managers control a lot of matches and keep score or help with the practices by informing the team on what to do. This can be very helpful to coaches who have a lot on their plate.

“The managers play an important role in running badminton matches or practices,” states Dale Gross, the boys varsity bowling and girls varsity badminton head coach.

Managers can mean more to the team than just being there for athletic support.

However not every manager has a good relationship with the team, but it does mean that they can build a relationship with the team though.”

When managers build relationships with the team, it benefits the morale and closeness of the team. It can personally benefit the managers.

“I love being able to spend time and building relationships with the boys,” describes Bodinus. “They are and being able to grow up together as a team. It helps you build strong character and make relationships which is very fun.”

Managing a team can be difficult, but very rewarding for the team, coach and personally. It is something that is always in need and it looked highly upon. Many teams are in need and are always looking to have a helping hand.

2. “A Love Hate Thing”

14 “The House,” an animated film on Netflix, is an eerie and mysterious tale of an old house and the many people who have lived in it.

I hate this house Review

“The House” is an eerie and awe-inspiring film that will hold viewers’ attention for its entire duration Eerie corridors, scary dark corners, lost memories and untold stories are all things that come together to make “The House” a home.

“The House” was released on Netflix in January of this year. The film uses its storytelling and creepy stop motion animation style to create a false sense of security to viewers and lure them into the mysterious environment that is “The House.”

The film is split into three chapters, each explaining a different story of someone who resided in the house.

The chapters skip through time and seemingly dimensions as well, with the first covering humans in what seems to be the Victorian era, the second switching to a modern day city run by rats, and the final chapter showing a sort of dystopian cat society.

The art of this film is brilliant.

Stop motion has always had a special place in my heart, with some of my fa-

vorite childhood movies coming straight out of Tim Burton’s collection of clay creations. The house uses an impeccable mix of styles, each chapter looking and feeling different from the last. Many of the creatures appear to be made of felt, though it changes each chapter to show different textures and realities.

In addition to the beautiful art of this film, the writing itself is absolutely something to be fond of. The use of foreshadowing is impeccable and really makes you think about why things are happening the way that they are. This is especially apparent during the first chapter. A family is offered residency in the house while a famous architect “renovates” their home. Their residency becomes permanent though, and the two young daughters have to try and learn the ins and outs of the house in order to save themselves from certain doom.

This film manages to create a

The film is immersive and makes you want to dive deeper and deeper into the mysteries of this building.

The house always seems to be under construction, but never manages to lose the same eerie and decrepit feeling it had from the start, which is an absolutely wonderful feat and makes the film feel all the more cohesive.

All in all, “The House” is a wonderfully thrilling film that will keep viewers on the edge of their seats. It has an amazing story and awe inspiring art that will keep viewers eyes glued to the screen.
