Karamu House began in 1915 by two Oberlin College students, Russell and Rowena Woodham Jelliffe. The Jelliffes wanted to establish a common ground where people of different races, religions, and social and economic backgrounds could share experiences. In 1917, the Jelliffes found that the arts can bring people together, which led to plays beginning in the new Playhouse Settlement. The Playhouse Settlement was officially renamed Karamu (in Swahili, “a place of joyful gathering”) House. Karamu House became a place where families and communities could gather, share stories, feast, and enjoy one another. Today, Karamu House is recognized as the oldest Black theatre produced in the nation.
