Chinese New Year 2024 Celebrations in Brisbane: The Year of the Dragon

The Chinese Lunar New Year is a much awaited festival by the East Asian community in Brisbane. It is a day of getting together with families , enjoying the delicious food, making lanterns and exchanging the red packet.

Every year is dedicated to an animal. This year is the year of the dragon. The Dragon is a symbol of Good luck and properity.

East Asian Organisations in Brisbane celebrate the Lunar New Year in Pomp and Galore. The Sunnybank Plaza and surrounding area is decorated with red lanterns and dragon images. The Plaza hosted many events celebrating the Lunar New Year . Dragon dances were the favorites of all during this time.

One such celebration at the Sunnybank Plaza organised at the landmark restaurant was hosted by the Taiwanese Community. Brisbane boasts of a huge Taiwanese community nearly 11,974 out of which 62% are Australian Citizens and 38% are non-Citizens. 42% are males where as 57% are females. Taiwanese are family oriented, hence the chinesse lunar celebration becomes a huge festival for all to come together and enjoy as one big family. The celebration at the

Landmark Restaurant was attended by Taiwan’s Chief Representative to Australia Mr. Douglas Hsu and Director General of Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Brisbane Mr. William Hou-Lu Fan. Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner and Lady Mayoress Nina Schrinner also graced the occasion at the Lunar New Year Dinner.

The New Year dinner celebrations were a good mix of community representation. Many Community leaders of various different community organisations from various countries also attended this function and enjoyed the festivities, the sumptuos food , music and dances.

Brisbane also celebrated the Lunar New Year. Especially the Lions Club of Brisbane, Premier’s Office celebrations of Chinese Lunar New Year Dinner at the Convention Center, Celebrations of Chinese New Year at Fortitude Valley in Brisbane is the biggest celebration for the community which is held in the open space of the fortitude Valley Mall area.

Vietnamese Community also Celebrate the Chinese New year in their own way. In Brisbane they also organised a dinner function for the community to celebrate the New Year.

New Year is always a happy time where old is replacing the new. It is the beginning of another year ahead to explore, flourish and fulfill your passion and ambitions. It is also the beginning to come together again to grow together in harmony.
