Sunnybank Plaza’s Hoyts Cinema foyer was adorned with the vibrant hues of lantern paintings as it hosted the prestigious 2024 Lantern Painting Competition Award Ceremony on Saturday, February 24th. The event, a highlight of the annual Taiwan Culture Festival, brought together esteemed guests, community leaders, and, most importantly, the talented winners of the competition.
President Susan Yang of World Arts & Multi Culture Inc. (WAMCI) expressed her delight at witnessing the remarkable talent of all artists. In her address, she emphasised the importance of nurturing creativity and encouraged the young artists to continue sharing their unique perspectives with the world. The ceremony, emceed by Edward Lin, CEO of the Australia Taiwan Culture Foundation Ltd., commenced with an acknowledgment of the country, followed by warm welcomes to the distinguished guests. Among the notable attendees were Melody Chen, Founding President of WAMCI, and a lineup of diplomats, elected representatives, community leaders, and advocates, each contributing to the rich cultural tapestry celebrated at the event.
The speeches, including addresses by William Fan, Director-General of Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Brisbane, Senator Paul Scarr, and Queensland Parliament Members Peter Russo and James Martin, underscored the significance of cultural exchange and artistic expression in fostering international understanding and cooperation.
A highlight of the ceremony was President Susan Yang’s heartfelt speech, where she expressed gratitude to all involved, from the talented young artists to the esteemed panel of judges and sponsors whose support made the event possible.

Following the speeches, the much-anticipated moment arrived as the award winners were announced and presented with their well-deserved accolades. The ceremony also saw the recognition of teachers and schools whose guidance played a pivotal role in nurturing the students’ talents. The event concluded with a group photo capturing the jubilant spirit of the occasion, followed by a light refreshment session, allowing attendees to mingle and celebrate the achievements of the budding artists.

As the lanterns illuminated the venue, it was evident that beyond the strokes of paint lay a deeper message of unity, diversity, and the transformative power of art—a message resonating brightly at the heart of the Taiwan Culture Festival.
