CLUB NEWS Back in early February, we had the honor to host the annual McConnell Golf corporate meetings here at the club. In all, 133 McConnell Golf team members from 17 different McConnell Golf clubs attended the three-day symposium. It is a tradition that the club who wins Club of the Year the prior year hosts the annual meeting. It was an opportunity for us to showcase the club and our staff. Congratulations to our staff for putting on an amazing show. Truly a magical couple of days filled with presentations from each member of our corporate team as well as

from each club. Tons of ideas and success stories were shared. A great way to kick off 2024. 2024 promises to be another awesome year with tons of events and fun ahead. Your continued support is so much appreciated. We cannot thank you enough for the member referrals as it is a great way to fill the club roster with your friends and family. We look forward to seeing you and your family around the club.

EMPLOYEE OF THE YEAR I am proud to announce that Davis Humphries is our Employee of the Year for 2023. Davis has recently been promoted from Assistant Tennis Professional to Assistant Director of Racket Sports. His energy and passion for the game and his students is unmatched. COOKIES OF THE MONTH APRIL COOKIE OF THE MONTH I BUTTER PECAN SANDIES COOKIE RECIPE I BRUCE MCINTOSH, EXECUTIVE CHEF AT CC OF ASHEVILLE (GLUTEN-FREE) Butter Pecan is a flavor that reminds me of my earlier years. This recipe has been a great find for me; now, I get to share it with all of you! Ingredients: 1 1/3 cups pecan halves 2/3 cup light brown sugar, packed 2/3 cup granulated sugar 8 tablespoons unsalted butter 1/2 cup vegetable shortening 1/2 teaspoon table salt 1 teaspoon baking soda 2 teaspoons Pure Vanilla Extract 3/4 teaspoon butter-rum flavor

MARCH COOKIE OF THE MONTH: LEMON COOKIE RECIPE I TODD JACKSON I EXECUTIVE CHEF AT WAKEFIELD PLANTATION My daughter isn’t a fan of rich chocolate desserts, but she loves anything lemon, and these cookies are one of her favorites, which means I can usually enlist her help in the kitchen when I make them.

1 teaspoon cider vinegar or white vinegar 1 large egg 2 cups King Arthur Gluten-Free Measure for Measure Flour 1 1/3 cups butterscotch chips 1/3 cup granulated sugar, mixed with 1 to 1 1/4 teaspoons salt, for topping* Directions:

Ingredients: 12 1/2 ounces unsalted butter 10 1/2 ounces 10x sugar 12 ounces of egg yolks 2 tablespoons grated lemon zest 1 1/2 pounds of all-purpose flour

Preheat the oven to 375°F. Lightly grease (or line with parchment) two baking sheets. Place the pecans in a single layer in a pan, and bake until they've darkened a bit and smell toasty, about 8 to 9 minutes. Set them aside to cool, then chop coarsely. In a large bowl, combine the sugars, butter, shortening, salt, baking soda, vanilla, flavor, and vinegar, beating until smooth and creamy. Beat in the egg, again, beating until smooth. Scrape the bottom and sides of the bowl with a spatula to make sure

Directions: Place the butter and sugar in an electric mixer. Using the paddle attachment on medium speed, cream together until light and smooth. Add the egg yolks slowly on low speed, fully incorporating and scraping down the sides of the bowl after each egg. Blend in the lemon zest. Add the flour, mixing just to incorporate. Using a plain tip, pipe out cookies from a pastry bag onto parchment-lined sheet pans. Bake in a 400degree oven until lightly brown. 8 to 10 minutes. Let cookies cool, dust

everything is thoroughly combined. Mix in the flour, then the chips and

with powdered sugar, and serve. Yields 5 dozen cookies.

spread quite a bit. Or, use a teaspoon cookie scoop to scoop 1 1/4" balls of

toasted nuts. If you're going to refrigerate the dough, cover the bowl, and refrigerate for about 4 to 5 hours; or overnight. Cookie dough refrigerated for 3 1/2 to 4 hours will spread moderately; chilled overnight, it will spread much less. Mix the 1/3 cup sugar and salt for the coating, and put it in a bowl. Use a spoon (or a tablespoon cookie scoop) to scoop 1 1/2" balls of dough into the sugar/salt mixture, rolling to coat. Then transfer to the prepared baking sheets, leaving 2" between them on all sides; they'll dough. Bake the cookies for 11 to 13 minutes — 11 minutes for smaller cookies, 13 for larger ones. Their edges will be chestnut brown and their tops a lighter golden brown. (For dough that's been refrigerated, add 30 seconds to 1 minute to those baking times.) Remove them from the oven, and cool on the pan until they're set enough to move without breaking. Repeat with the remaining dough. Store cookies, well wrapped, at room temperature for several days; freeze for longer storage.

Happy Spring from your PT, Heather! I hope you are finding this wonderful North Carolina weather enjoyable! Getting outside in the fresh air is good for you in so many ways, and I hope you have been able to do just that. Some of you already know that this is my favorite season. Oh, how I love the flowers blooming and the wildlife being born. Now, I would like to ask you a serious question. When was the last time you stretched your muscles? I mean, really stretched and spent a good duration in a stretch? In all of the training I have had throughout the years, the basic statement about the three components of fitness is that one is never more important than the other two; they are all equal! So what are the three components of fitness? They are cardio training, resistance (weight) training, and stretching! Getting the heart pumping, taxing the muscles, and lengthening the muscles are vital to a healthy body, and a tight muscle is not a healthy muscle.

Have you ever considered doing a stretch routine? For a few reasons, I ask that you do. So what does this do for your body, and why is it so overlooked? Stretching will help prevent injuries. When you work out with tight muscles, you are much more likely to hurt yourself and/or tear muscle fibers. It will also improve flexibility and range of motion and make your workout more doable. Stretching reduces stress and increases blood flow. It calms the mind, decreases tension headaches, heals and/or prevents back pain, and improves posture and balance. What's not to love? When starting a stretching routine, it's good to consult a doctor or a personal trainer. But if you decide to do this on your own, here are some tips to consider: * Don't stretch cold (warm up gently first). * Move slowly (hold each stretch for at least 30 seconds, if not more!) * Don't bounce (ballistic stretching is not a good idea). * Stretch only to your comfort level (not beyond; no pain/no gain does NOT apply). * Be careful not to overdo (just like in every other type of exercise). * Dynamic and static stretches are probably the best to start (PNF and active stretching can also be considered). * Start with 10 minutes of stretching (this can be 5–10 at the beginning and end of each workout). Also, it's always a good time for a stretch, and you don't even have to wait for a workout. Just do some stretching in the morning, at lunchtime to revive, and at bedtime to relax. And welcome to spring! What better time to wake up, stretch, and say, Ahh! Your dedicated friend, Yogi and PT Heather Overington hbailey@ccwakefieldplantation.com

With a variety of yoga classes to strength we have you covered! All classes are complimentary! Check out the Wakefield website or grab a calendar from the sports club for all days and times! *You do not need to register for classes Total Body Strength with Hannah: Functional strength training utilizing resistance exercises with weights and body weight movements to better equip you to handle feats of strength and athleticism. Improve movement efficiency, coordination, and mobility, and increase lean muscle mass to take on the physiological demands of real-life activities. (Option for all levels) ZUMBA with Hannah: “Party yourself into shape!” This workout, disguised as a dance party, will get you shimmying, shaking, and sweating the hour away to Latin-inspired pop music. Join the party! All levels. Gentle Sunset Yoga with Greg: This yoga class will be comprised of poses that encompass deep stretches, twists, and balance. All levels are encouraged to attend. Directions are given to help individuals reach their edge of strength, flexibility, or mindful movement. Life can be stressful, but this class is oriented to allow people to enjoy their bodies, relax, and release, all while enjoying an occasional laugh. Athletic Strength and Focus with Greg: This is a class that strings together a series of yoga moves to first improve strength, followed by flexibility, and, of course, mental focus. The class objectives can change weekly. I always encourage the attendees to challenge themselves at all stages of the class. Requirements for the class: sense of humor, dedication to finish, and willingness to push themselves to the edge. Don’t forget to drink some water. Slow-Paced Yoga with Greg: Let’s get together and enjoy a morning yoga session outdoors. This class will be a way of awakening your mind, breath, and body. Allowing your mind to focus, your body to stretch, and your breath to flow. Stretch, flex, and strengthen gently. All levels are encouraged to attend. This session will be comprised of sequencing simplistic poses that allow members to enjoy some much-needed time on their yoga mat. * Please bring a mat and water bottle. Get with the Flow Yoga with Heather: A faster-paced yoga practice that moves with a bit more rhythm and the asanas paired with the breath. Modifications are taught and encouraged. * Please bring a mat, preferably a block, and a strap. DE-Manic Monday Yoga with Heather: Restorative yoga is the practice of the long-held asanas and is about slowing down to rest, reset, and rejuvenate the body and mind. A time to observe the breath and connect the mind and body. Suitable for beginners and practitioners of all levels. *Please bring a mat, preferably a block, and a strap. Fitter Faster with Heather: This is a class held outdoors using equipment and body weight to challenge your entire body. This total body workout is a great way to condition for other sports, increase stamina and endurance, stop cellular aging, build muscle strength, and aid in weight loss. We will incorporate intervals and Tabata training. It's fast-paced and fun, but you can work at your own pace. YOGALATIES with Heather: Yogalaties is a type of exercise inspired by yoga and Pilates, as its name suggests. It is said to harness the physical and mental benefits of both practices. It will incorporate yoga postures, gentle movement sequences, breath work, core work, and supportive guided relaxation for increased awareness. All levels are welcomed. Mind over Matter with Heather: Mind Over Matter focuses on awakening witness consciousness—the ability to see ourselves clearly. First, by deepening the relationship to the physical body through the keen sensitivity of the subtle signals it conveys. We will practice breathing techniques to move the energy called prana (life force) and incorporate asanas that promote healing.

Chair Yoga with Greg: This class has been designed to assist people who are not fluid in getting up and down from a yoga mat. The chair provides stability and safety. Often, such classes are dismissed as “easy” or only for people who have mobility options; however, individuals often enjoy a deeper stretch with the aid of the chair. Even with the aid of a chair, participants are still able to enjoy plenty of hip openers, lower body stretches, and shoulder/back stretches. Balance poses are also part of the class. The chair aids individuals in keeping good form while providing a safety aid.

TEE IT UP IMPROVE YOUR GAME: WHAT DO YOU NOTICE ABOUT THEIR RIGHT FOOT? I can imagine you must be thinking, “Why is he talking about their right foot?” Let me explain. Often, a player’s right foot will be well off the ground long before they get to impact . This is due to many factors, but mainly because rotation in the downswing has started before we take time to start moving forward. Keep in mind, a golf swing is a turn, a shift, and a turn. You turn to your trail side in your backswing (your trail glute actually gets closer to the target), you then shift SLIGHTLY to the target, and then turn towards the target in the downswing and follow through. Rotating to soon in the downswing will cause the club to ‘kick out’ and over the proper swing path... likely causing a slice. If you tend to slice most of your shots, try this the next time you are on the range. As you begin your downswing, make your inside ankle on your trail foot shift slightly towards the target, forcing your weight to move towards your target side foot. The club will likely drop more to the inside and allow you to hit the ball with more force and much straighter. For more help with your swing, contact me at rbrooks@ccwakefieldplantation.com and I promise I can show you how to never hit another slice.

We also added an event for The Masters Week we think you will enjoy. We are also working on a weekend match-play-style event for early November, but we are still working on the details. TEE IT UP GREENS AERIFICATION Aerification! There’s that word no one likes. Golfers despise it because it disrupts the putting surface, and the maintenance staff cringes because of the backbreaking work. But aerification is the very core of quality putting surfaces and a successful greens program, so let’s take a look at some of the benefits. Here at Wakefield Plantation, greens aerification is performed three times a year. Our normal schedule is 1/2-inch holes in early March, 3/8-inch holes in early June and 1/4-inch holes in late August. Each time we core aerify we are removing thatch and allowing the greens to exchange carbon dioxide and other gases for oxygen. Thatch is a layer of undecomposed and partially decomposed roots and stems located in the top 1 inch beneath the surface of the green. Healthy roots need oxygen to grow and function properly. If thatch is not controlled, the greens would become soft and spongy, and this organic layer would eventually seal off the surface of the green. When this happens, too much water is retained in this layer, which therefore deprives the roots of proper amounts of oxygen. Each year, we take soil samples from our greens and have an independent lab test them to determine the percentage of organic matter. We then use this information to help develop our aerification and topdressing program for the next year. In the summer, you will also see us punch the greens with a small, solid tine and not remove a core. This is done during periods of high heat and humidity coupled with too much rainfall. When the combination of these three conditions comes together for extended periods, the greens need quick relief. Therefore, during the summer, we implement solid tine as needed to help the upper root zone stay dry and to enhance oxygen flow. The core aerification process is a necessary evil that no one enjoys. Golfers have to putt over holes for several weeks, and it creates more work for golf course maintenance. But aerification provides air to the roots, helps keep the surfaces dry and firm, and gives us the opportunity to provide you with tournament-quality putting surfaces throughout the year. Todd Lawrence, Director of Golf Course Maintenance

UNC HEALTH CHAMPIONSHIP I MAY 30 - JUNE 2

The Korn Ferry Tour's Visit Knoxville Open returns to Holston Hills Country Club in 2024. Holston Hills enjoys a rich history on its classic Donald Ross golf course and is one of four remaining original Korn Ferry Tour events. The course is currently ranked No. 5 on Golf Digest’s list of the best golf courses in Tennessee. It is also consistently ranked among the country’s top 100 by Golf Magazine and within the top 100 classical golf courses by Golfweek Magazine. For tournament and volunteer information, visit www.visitknoxopen.com.

After a name change and its debut at Raleigh Country Club last year, the Korn Ferry Tour’s UNC Health Championship returns to Donald Ross’ final golf course design. Raleigh’s course is currently ranked No. 27 on Golf Digest’s list of the best golf courses in North Carolina. The UNC Health Championship is the Korn Ferry Tour’s only stop in North Carolina and is the second leg of back-to-back Korn Ferry Tour events at McConnell Golf properties.
