I'm a big believer in the importance of the short game chipping and putting are the quickest ways to lower your scores. If you don’t have time to warm up on the range before your round, take five minutes to roll some putts on the green. It’ll help you get a feel for the speed and sharpen your touch. Remember, you use your putter more than any other club during a round, so it deserves the most practice!

GROUNDS
When we moved to Asheville last year, one of the first things everyone told us was, “You have no idea what the weather will do from one day to the next rain on one side of town and sunshine on the other.” This spring has certainly proven that to be true. We’ve had 75degree days followed by highs in the 40s, dry spells interrupted by windy conditions, the occasional rain shower, and even smoke from nearby forest fires
Despite the unpredictable weather, this spring has been a productive one. We’ve tackled aerification, fertility applications, sod work, and seeding Contractors have also been on site handling repairs to the bridge on #6 Tee and a few culverts on the back nine May is a critical month to make sure all turf is healthy going into summer and to wrap up the smaller projects on our list
As we officially move into the heart of golf season, I’d like to take a moment to highlight a few key ways we can all help take care of the course:
Ball Marks
One of the biggest daily challenges for any golf course superintendent is the improper repair or total neglect of ball marks Fixing your ball mark isn’t just courtesy to the golfers behind you; it's also vital to the health of our greens. Unrepaired or incorrectly repaired marks can lead to poa annua establishment and provide entry points for pathogens and turf diseases. If you’re unsure whether you’re fixing them correctly, feel free to ask any of the Golf Professional Staff, or stop Hampton or me out on the course. We also have a short tutorial video available in the Superintendent’s Corner on the website, along with a guide below.
Divots
Divots have a similar impact An unrepaired divot not only affects playability but can also invite weed growth and turf disease A good rule of thumb: if you see your divot, replace it, tamp it down with your foot, and add a light layer of sand if available then smooth it out. If you can’t find the divot, just fill the area with sand and smooth it over And remember, if you see a divot, there's probably an unrepaired one nearby fix it if you can!
Cart Traffic
Cart traffic yes, including push carts is another common issue we face Keeping carts on paths as long as possible before heading to your ball helps maintain turf health. Always park with all four tires on the path. Push carts can cause just as much damage as riding carts, especially when they’re used on collars, approaches, or tees. Please keep them off these areas and be mindful of "pinch points" and hightraffic areas, especially around bunkers and greens
We’ll be working with the Golf Shop Staff to create a few short videos to help further educate members on best practices for course care. Thanks again for doing your part to keep the course in great condition!
