MC4C online forum

After the success of the last online forum MC4C are arranging another community forum for all to be involved (date TBC). The purpose of the online forum is to provide an opportunity for communities to be informed about the support MC4C maybe able to provide to some of the young people they work with. The previous forum was very successful and we received lots of positive feedback. We want to capture people’s attention with information about our regular business support sessions, which focus on more in-depth topics relevant to starting up your own business and we want to inform and encourage young people to seek our help. If you would like to attend, please register your interest by emailing Judith.Meza@hullcc.gov.uk.

Many Happy returns One young participant registered with an accountant and signed up as a limited company two months before she started with MC4C. For someone who expected to turnover a few thousand a year selling wax melts, this was overkill – with more complicated paperwork and tax. So she parted with her accountant and asked to be de-registered. She re-registered as a sole trader – and received demands for two tax returns, for both businesses. Graham from MC4C helped her with both but the demands didn’t go away and finally she was told she had 14 days to comply. It was encouraging to see that she took matters into her own hands. She rang Companies House who told her the business was still active, which was the cause of the HMRC demands. She was able to deactivate the business by paying £8! She rang HMRC who confirmed that all was now in order. Take the initiative, be positive and things have a habit of sorting themselves out!

John Cracknell Youth Enterprise Bank Grants

Windows, Wax and Hard Work “When I’m Cleaning Windows” was a popular song by George Formby in the 1930’s and it could be the theme tune for one of the businesses receiving grants from The John Cracknell Youth Enterprise Bank in August. Window cleaner, Samantha Sewell was awarded funds for a system allowing her to reach upper floor windows without scaling ladders. “Window Woman”, as her business will be known, will be cleaning conservatories, and uPVC too.

Also rewarded were Ellesse Tymon and Natasha Hicks, owners of Resin-Lution Art and Dream Unique, respectively. Both had planned to produce wax melts and candles, but recently Ellesse turned to epoxy resin, producing coasters and candleholders. Meanwhile Natasha has had success with her wax melts and candles, selling large quantities in a single day. All three have worked hard at their business plans with Graham and their reward is the Market Test grant from the Youth Bank and the opportunity to apply for further funding, such as the new Additional Restrictions Grants. As George Formby would have said “Turned out nice again!”

Judith’s Journey

Six Months on The Job I feel fortunate to have built a support system that is proving to be so valuable. I’ve come to appreciate the power of connections. Throughout my journey so far, I’ve been trying to become more connected with people who can be of help to me now and in the future whilst setting up my business. I’m grateful to have built this support system, I hope more young entrepreneurs will have the opportunity to surround themselves with the right people. I’m learning a lot as I go, however, one of the biggest lessons I have learnt so far is that in any situation I need to put myself first and think of how that situation would benefit me and my business. In my search for a property, I noticed the benefit of keeping a calm mind and not letting pressure get to you. Even though I have not found a property yet, the search continues. Furthermore, as much as it’s important to seek advice from others and take it into consideration, I’m responsible for making the final decision. Its’ been six months since I started this journey, and I can already see the difference in how confident I have become. I can’t wait to see what the next six months will bring.
