Aspiring young entrepreneurs aged from 16 to 29 can submit a two-minute video about their business idea to former BBC Apprentice contestant Adam Corbally, patron of Hull’s Making Changes for Careers programme. The winner will receive a cash grant of up to £1,000 from the John Cracknell Youth Enterprise Bank and be mentored by Adam for at least a year. The challenge has been issued by Adam and the John Cracknell Youth Enterprise Bank ahead of the fifteenth Global Entrepreneurship Week (GEW), which takes place in Hull from Monday 14 November to Friday 18 November. Adam said: “This is your big opportunity to be somebody who makes things happen. I want to hear from you, and I want to hear all about your big business idea. You can put together a two-minute video pitch and send it over to me. Make it short, snappy, straight to the point. Tell me all about your business idea, why it is going to be fantastic and why you are the best driving force behind that idea. The winner is going to receive a 12-month mentorship with myself. This is an unbelievable opportunity. Be somebody that makes things happen.”

Please send the two-minute video to adam.corbally@outlook.com by Wednesday 9th November.

News & Events The Malcolm Scott Award

Every year Hull City Council give a series of awards as part of Global Entrepreneurship Week in November. This year, one goes to the business or organisation that in our opinion has done the most to support young entrepreneurs or indeed enterprising pupils. The John Cracknell Youth Enterprise Bank will sponsor the award and it will be named in memory of Malcolm Scott, a past President of Hull and Humber Chamber of Commerce and a well-known businessman in Hull. The award will be presented by Councillor Christine Randall the Lord Mayor of Hull and Emma Hardy MP. Charles Cracknell founder of John Cracknell Youth Enterprise Bank said: "Malcolm did so much for the City and was always interested in the success of the individual entrepreneur; he was a true gent and advocate for the City. He would always take time to chat to any young person I was mentoring to discuss their enterprising journey, he was a legend and had a huge commitment to Hull and its people."

Lord Mayor's Christmas Tree festival

Businesses, including young entrepreneurs and organisations have been invited to take part in the Lord Mayor’s Christmas Tree Festival, as it returns to Hull Minster next month. The event, which sees decorated Christmas trees displayed in the Minster, will take place Tuesday 29 November until Saturday 17 December. Lord Mayor, Councillor Christine Randall, said: “The Christmas tree festival is a fabulous start to the festive season and I’m really looking forward to seeing what designs are entered this year and I am delighted that the John Cracknell Youth Enterprise Bank has agreed to support the event. Everyone entering will receive a certificate of thanks" Businesses can either enter a decorated tree or can offer to sponsor one for the event. Funds will be raised for the Lord Mayor’s Charity Appeal Fund, which this year supports The Charterhouse Hull and The Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (REME) Benevolent Fund. For more information or to get involved in the event, call the Civic Office on 01482 615093.

In The Spotlight… Liliabydesign Lilia Kitchen

Lilia is a young adult breaking into the world of business. Due to her autism and heightened anxiety she finds it hard being in the community. But she loves making resin products, as it calms her and also gives her an income and independence. Now that Lilia has her dog, Storm, she still needs to fund his ongoing training, food, toys, insurance and vet bills. Lilia’s beautiful resin products are long-lasting and durable. They come in any colour, with or without glitter, embellishments or crystals. Each item is bespoke and designed with the customer.

The latest MC4C staff member goes full circle. In December 2020 I walked through the doors at Endeavour as a new member of staff for Hull Training, I‘d come full circle in the 37 years since, as a fresh-faced teenager, starting as an employee of Hull City Councils Works Department based on Bontoff Avenue. In August 2022 an opportunity arose to move across to MC4C and work alongside staff who use motivation, support, guidance, and knowledge to inspire young people to gain work as an employee or go into self-employment.

My pathway into education coincided with coaching my son’s team, having always played football on Saturday and Sundays (no squad rotation in those days), the dramatic change from steel toe capped boots into football boots as workplace attire had begun. I first stood in front of a class (without being asked to put my hands on my head) in 2005, working for Hull College as a Sports Coach, for the next 14½ years employed as a Tutor, Course and Curriculum Leader in the Sports and Public Service Department engaging 16 years + to gain BTEC qualifications. I hold part time positions across ‘educational’ providers including tutoring for HEY Children’s University Charity delivering experiences to inspire young people (Primary school age) living in high deprivation areas, who in some cases have never stepped outside the area. Offering a range of unique exciting opportunities outside the classroom, including London and Edinburgh. Coaching the U16 Hull City Boy’s Academy squad, who look to gain scholarships in the game has seen me working with elite athletes including Keane Lewis Potter, Josh Tymon, and Jacob Greaves over the 8½ years. I’d previously run the local Girls’ Football Academy, providing an opportunity for talented female footballers including the Notarantonio family, another circle connected. I’ve delivered coaching courses for the Football Association and to local coaches looking to enhance their knowledge and understanding of the game. This position gave me the opportunity to deliver programmes in Ghana with the current Chelsea manager Graham Potter, The F.A. require me to be self employed as a sole trader, one of the aims of MC4C, another example of going full circle.

The October meeting of the John Cracknell Youth Enterprise Bank saw business plans from two young entrepreneurs presented to the panel. Ashleigh Ward Cosmetics, a lash extension business, offers a wide range of beauty treatments. Ashleigh says, “Since meeting with MC4C just over a month ago I have set up my business and started my training with Brown Sugar Training Academy. I am just so much happier than I was and have so much more hope for my and my children's futures. I am now fully booked for around two weeks at a time and some appointments 3-4 weeks ahead too, so things have really hit off for me. All thanks to the help of MC4C. I knew they would help me to learn more, but I significantly under-estimated how much it would benefit me. I came to MC4C with a small idea and just look at what it's become already!” To book an appointment or support Ashleigh find Ward Cosmetics on Facebook and Instagram. Daniel Prior has a passion for antique and memorabilia collecting, which he’s had from an early age. This led to him starting Daniel’s Antiques Hull, a business that deals in antiques, mainly auto memorabilia and also 1960’s – 1980’s retro lighting and furniture. With support from MC4C and the Youth Bank Daniel will be able to run his business efficiently. To purchase or support Daniel’s business find him on Instagram. No wonder the John Cracknell Youth Enterprise Bank gave both young entrepreneurs the thumbs up, awarding them Test Market grants to put their enterprising ideas into practice and kick-start their businesses.
