Hull City Council’s Team Awarded Regional Title for Supporting Small Businesses in #GEW20022 The Hull City Council Youth Enterprise Team has just been awarded a prestigious ‘best in the region’ award for its support for the local small business community. The team was among 250 councils in England who entered the inaugural Local Government awards run by Britain’s biggest business representation group, and it emerged triumphant in the Covid Response regional category.

The Youth Enterprise team supported 300 young people under the age of 29, raised critical funds, and recruited 80 volunteer mentors to help early and young start-ups who were part of the #ExcludedUK community. Councillor Mike Ross, Leader of Hull City Council said: “This award is recognition for the tremendous hard work of the team who went the extra mile to help so many young people in industry during the extremely challenging period of the pandemic. Without their efforts many of those young people would have been left with no support at all." Councillor Paul Drake-Davis said "The Covid-19 pandemic was the most challenging time for all of us, including many young people who were trying to start their own entrepreneurial journeys. This award is so richly deserved for the outstanding care and support the team provided.“ Becca Pettman, owner of Gray Rose Boutique said: “My mentor Charles and the rest of the Youth Enterprise team checked in regularly to ensure we were ok. They gave me encouragement and linked me up with other young people in the same situation. They ensured my business was ready to trade when we could open again.“ Paula Gouldthorpe, FSB Development Manager for South and East Yorkshire and the Humber said: “It is really pleasing to see Hull City Council’s Youth Enterprise Team rewarded for their consistent hard work and effort to help young people and their businesses through what has been a very challenging couple of years.

Both the quality and quantity of entries from this region and beyond was incredibly high so Hull City Council should feel very proud to be among the winners. We look forward to continuing to work with them – and seeing more good work from the team that clearly does an incredible job to inspire young people and support those new to starting up”

What is Global Entrepreneurship Week? Global Entrepreneurship Week (GEW) is a massive campaign to celebrate and empower enterprising people in every country and community around the world. Each November, 10 million people take part in tens of thousands of activities, competitions and events that inspire them to act and provide them with the knowledge, experience and connections they need to succeed. In Hull we encourage young people, teachers and those that support enterprising young people to share their experiences and take part in events and competitions in order to showcase the Youth Enterprise eco system in the city. This year was very special as it was the first one, we had held in person since 2019, due to Covid. While GEW only takes place one week each year, the connections made are long-lasting. It is through GEW that Hull has youth enterprise links in South Africa, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Egypt and Australia. Charlene Porteous Youth Enterprise Advisor at MC4C said: “Global Entrepreneurship Week is a great opportunity for me to outline what I do in promoting the Big 13 Enterprise Skills to aspiring young entrepreneurs and those seeking work and to help showcase some of the inspirational young entrepreneurs that I have worked with.”

Adam Corbally video enterprise Challenge winners! Part of Global Entrepreneurship Week was the Adam Corbally Video Enterprise Challenge, which was opened to young people aged 16-29 who live in Hull, Ryedale or the East Riding. Celebration of Big 13 Enterprise Skills This event celebrated Hull’s work in promoting the Big 13 Enterprise Skills, illustrating how they are aiding the ambitions of our aspiring young entrepreneurs and developing pupils’ understanding of enterprise skills, The invited audience was from the area’s business, educational and civic communities as well as from York Spark and also Yorkshire in Business, based in Scarborough. The event featured young entrepreneurs who took part in MC4C’s programme, enterprising pupils from Gillshill Primary School and sixth formers from Blue Ceramics, a business set up by Ganton School. The event also featured two guest speakers - Adam Corbally, former BBC Apprentice and Patron of MC4C and Iona Bain, award winning speaker, author, writer and broadcaster, who is on a mission to help young people to get to grips with personal finance. The audience also heard from the UK Intellectual Property Office on how to spot fake products and services and how to protect a business idea. Some of MC4C’s young entrepreneurs, had stalls in the Reception Room – businesses that Hull City Council and the John Cracknell Youth Enterprise Bank have supported. At the end of the event, it was announced that Gillshill Primary and Ganton School’s Blue Ceramics were to be given £250 from the John Cracknell Youth Enterprise Bank to support their enterprise activities Emma Hardy MP said: “It was great to attend the Celebration of Big 13 Enterprise Skills as part of Global Entrepreneurship Week this morning at the Guildhall. I’m a strong believer that education should be broad and focus on developing the whole person, rather than just a narrow range of academic subjects. That’s why The Big 13 Enterprise Skills is such a good initiative, as it provides the skills young people need to be successful in school, work, home and business. It was brilliant to see and hear how these skills have been implemented in schools in Hull and we even got the chance to test our own ability at these skills in team building exercises.”

Annual Youth Enterprise Awards Evening

The Annual Global Entrepreneurship Week Celebration Event was held at the Guildhall; it was our first in-person celebration since 2019 and so there was a great atmosphere with people catching up to celebrate Hull’s Youth Enterprise Ecosystem. The evening involved good food and company and saw the announcement of our Annual Awards winners, followed by dancing led by Sue Brummitt and the ‘Gillshill Gang’! We had a number of fund-raising activities including tombola, Heads and Tails and an auction for great prizes to support Action for Ashley, a young man with Duchenne and Joy for Joel, our chosen charities. The evening raised just under £3000. We also presented Emma Hardy MP with a portrait of her, commissioned by the John Cracknell Youth Enterprise Bank, by local artist Mary Wells, in recognition of her support for the cause of #ExcludedUK and enterprising young people, both inside and outside Parliament. We also gave a donation to the Lord Mayor’s Christmas Tree Appeal.
