Young Persons Regeneration Champion Appointed to the Employment Hub’s Inclusion Team

New Champion Lacey Brown said “Since joining the Employment Hub in March I have seen how important it is to be a part of a team that genuinely cares about our young people. I am developing a plan of action on how best to support care leavers on their journey to employment, whether that be education, training, applying for jobs or self-employment. It is especially important to me now more than ever (with the impact of COVID) that Care leavers in the city feel well supported and are fully equipped to achieve the best they can. I have been made to feel very welcome in my new team and I hope to extend the same warm welcome to the young people we are here to help.”

Judith’s Journey This month has been very interesting and productive. Before I start completing my business plan, I realised I need to do some “homework.” It’s really important to do research in order to understand how your business idea would work in reality. I concentrated on understanding the sector I want to go into and researching how the business would operate. To do this I used the Hull Libraries Cobra software, sent out emails and made some calls to a number of people to ask questions.

I had the opportunity to discuss my journey as a panellist on the Marketing Humber Pathways to Success: Young Talent Panel Session held as part of the skills Humber event. Check out the video here. I hope that sharing my story so far, as an aspiring entrepreneur, will inspire other young people. I believe the Humber region has great potential for growth, and I look forward to setting up my business in my home City of Hull. I’ve really enjoyed interacting with local community groups and to come across so many groups working to support young people makes me feel proud of our city. This month I’ve also had the opportunity to have an in-depth discussion about business start up support with the owner of Apricity Jewellery, and fellow young entrepreneur Fran Swann. Hearing about her success gives me confidence that I will also succeed. You can see our interview here.

What a Difference a Year Makes… MC4C Advisor Gemma Lacey went on maternity leave in early 2020, to welcome a new life in to the world. Gemma, like the rest of us, could not a predict what a different work place she would return too. Gemma said “MC4C has made drastic changes to accommodate ways and means around the Covid-19 restrictions. From a world where it was classroom based sessions and participants could freely access the MC4C offices, to a world where we offer support and help via video/phone calls, and emails. Whilst on maternity leave throughout 2020, I could observe how MC4C was continuously active on social media, encouraging young people to engage and offering support to those that are self-employed. Upon my return not only are MC4C still offering support to 16-29 year olds to find employment, with a high profile self-employment course. We are also liaising with the Employment Hub at Hull Central Library, where I am now situated one day a week. We are going to deliver tailored sessions to new cohorts, to condense what help is available to them. Joining forces will help reach out to more people and promote what we do. We hope to welcome new faces to both teams very soon.

Micro Business Support

Urban Guru Coach - Antonia Newlove Greetings from the Urban Guru Coach Project, my name is Antonia and was once the day to day standard personal trainer/yoga instructor, rushing from gym to gym, and client to client. As the world crumbled into the corona chaos my career JCYEB grant awardee & former MC4C client, Antonia, was in had to be put on pause, surviving off my savings the Excluded UK category but has now been helped to as I was not entitled to any grants or funding. re-establish her business with Micro Business support.

I contacted Micro Business Support where I have finally got some assistance, along with being blessed with an amazing mentor Tracey Sheldon. I had two options to choose from, either sit back and waste time, or take action and overcome this obstacle by enhancing and adapting to societies needs shifting to a virtual model. Luckily enough the first lockdown gave me the time to meditate and accumulate ideas for my next venture, to build a stable platform for clients that enables them to not only work on their physical goals, but also to find the right coach for them. In regards to what areas they are subconsciously suppressed in, for example "if their work is not going well = the motivation to train will regress too“. I have recruited experienced coaches in mindset and relationships, nutrition, peak performance, optimization, yoga, and breathwork. Additionally we will be hosting weekend and day retreats. We can't wait to share our knowledge with clients and most importantly show them how to use it. Head to www.urbangurucoach.com or Instagram for more details.

John Cracknell Youth Enterprise Bank Grants Kaylum Barker

JCYEB ReStart Grants

We often get great feedback from MC4C participants. We helped Kaylum find work as well as gave him help on how to develop a business idea he has.

ReStart Grants established for young entrepreneurs who were #Excluded from Government financial schemes in order to help them to prepare for trading in the coming weeks. At its first meeting the grants panel issued 11 such grants to enterprising young people in Hull.

Kaylum said "Thank you so much once again Charles for the Emergency Grants. I really do appreciate it a lot. Don't know where I would be without the help of you all at MC4C, totally changed my life from the day I first met you all.”

Ella Ounsworth said "Thank you so much, I am overwhelmed and so grateful for everything MC4C and JCYEB have done for me over this past year. I am so excited for the future of my business. Thank you for everything!"

In the last four years Graham Henderson, MC4C’s Business Advisor, must have sat in more than 20 meetings of The John Cracknell Youth Enterprise Bank and presented over 50 business plans from young entrepreneurs. Many of these have been rewarded with grants from the Bank’s panel. April’s meeting was no exception. Three very different plans, from three young people, all motivated and committed to their business goals. The Youth Bank said that they found the Business Plans well written and “a joy to read”, and were pleased to award them their grants.

David Riszko David studied Games Production at Nottingham University. Rather than move to a popular centre for gaming companies, such as London, he moved back to his home town of Hull to set up his company, Zeporal Entertainment. Through which he hopes to produce 3 games a year for the iPhone and Android platforms. In a very comprehensive business plan, he explained that he hopes that he can develop something of a cult following for his games, which could grow exponentially as more are launched online.
