In The Spotlight…

James Danville is an aspiring music producer. He has based himself in a studio on Posterngate in Hull. As a musician himself, he likes to work with young people and guide them through sessions. James believes strongly in authenticity. He says “young rappers want to imitate the southern accent, so I tell my younger clients that it’s cool to rap in a Yorkshire accent and stay true to themselves.” James is setting up his business with support from MC4C and the John Cracknell Youth Enterprise Bank. He provides recording, mixing and production services and, for the last 7 years, has been the in-house producer for Hull artist Chiedu Oraka.

He has also

released his own solo music. Recently, James and his team travelled to

Brixton in London for a gig at popular music venue, Hootananny’s. This was his first gig after the pandemic. James says “It was great to get out to another city to perform our music again.” Listen to James’ music on Spotify and follow him on Instagram Facebook using his artist name ‘Deezkid’.

Micro Business Support Peter Bolton City Farmstead Ltd

I am pleased to introduce City Farmstead Ltd and share how Tracy Sheldon has supported us on our startup journey. The vision to grow nutritious and delicious food in the places they’re eaten and add sustainability to City Centres, is evident in this changing world so, I reached out for help at the Humber Growth Hub and linked up with Tracy. Having Tracy's support, guidance and mentorship gave me the self-assurance to embark on and finalise start-up and investment preparations. Together, we developed a complete business plan and incorporated new and unused ideas for a vertical farm. We converted this into a robust and profitable business proposal at the forefront of innovation. Our weekly sessions motivate and energise me. It is always a joy. Tracy is cheerful, full of entrepreneurial recommendations and, during our six months of consultation, her wealth of experience has positively shaped and impacted our business and its opportunities. Like me, I hope you find the chance to either have Tracy as your business support consultant or, work alongside her in any other capacity. For further information on City Farmstead, visit our website www.cityfarmstead.co.uk, or write to info@cityfarmstead.co.uk.

Judith’s Journey

Professional and Personal Development

It has been a fun month with plenty to learn and the chance to speak with truly inspiring people. Attending the Employment Hub Recruitment Fair was slightly out of my comfort zone; however, I quickly settled in and was able to share my experience on the MC4C programme with potential entrepreneurs. Harry Sanders is a young successful entrepreneur that I’ve come to admire. His journey to success is inspirational. In our conversation Harry dropped some real ‘gems’ for entrepreneurs to take on board. As an aspiring entrepreneur it was great to see how your current circumstances do not define your future. Another piece of advice I am going to take on board is not to overestimate my first year in business or underestimate where my business could be in five years. Click here to watch a preview of the interview. As part of the Global Entrepreneurship Week, I have been conducting interviews with several people. I enjoyed speaking to Hull West and Hessle MP, Emma Hardy, who is an advocate for enterprise and enterprising young people. The full interview is available here. I also had the opportunity to speak to the owner of Stacie Jane Crafts and a fellow young entrepreneur, Stacie Appleyard. Despite being a busy mum, Stacie is able to run a successful business selling crochet products. Speaking with Stacie highlighted how one can turn one’s hobby into a business and earn income. You can watch the full interview here. I am currently working with Jane Nelson from the Major Project Infrastructure to help me find a property to set up my business. It is looking positive so far.

John Cracknell Youth Enterprise Bank Grants

The John Cracknell Youth Enterprise Bank continues to support enterprising young people with a helpful hand up the first rungs of the ladder to self-employment. This month, three very different businesses won the bank’s approval. Michael Wright has an ambition to work with animals, but he’s also accomplished in computer skills – largely self-taught. He plans to attend Bishop Burton College next September. Michael will meanwhile set up a computer maintenance business, repairing and eventually building, PCs for clients. John Twyman has worked for his father’s building maintenance business since his teens. Now that his father needs to slow down, John plans to take the reigns and develop the business to the next level. He inherits experience, as well as a complete set of tools! James Danville, has also got it “all wrapped” – or “rapped”! As a music producer, he works with young musicians in the local community as rap music, is something of a niche in the city. James recently travelled to Hootananny’s (which describes itself as “a raucous music venue in Brixton”) to play at a gig there.

All three grants were approved and all now have the opportunity to consider a further application to the Additional Restrictions Grants (ARG). ARG helps new start-ups under Covid restrictions.
