Hull school student awarded prize for youth entrepreneurship The winner of the new Nadine Fudge One to Watch Youth Enterprise Award is 12-year-old school pupil Cydney Newlove of St Mary’s College for her business – Cydney’s Cave, which sells arts and crafts, with a focus on crochet cat hats. As part of the award, she has won £250 from the John Cracknell Youth Enterprise Bank and ongoing support from Hull City Council.

Daren Hale, Leader of Hull City Council said: “I wish to offer my congratulations to Cydney for winning the Nadine Fudge One to Watch Youth Enterprise Award. As a council, working with partners like the John Cracknell Youth Enterprise Bank and Hull BiPC, we have a commitment to expanding the youth enterprise eco-system and ensuring practical support is available. Programmes like the Making Changes for Careers Programme offer business skills sessions as well as an understanding of the Big 13 Enterprise Skills to enable more young people like Cydney to have the experience of being their own boss. I am sure she will be a great ambassador for the city.” Cydney Newlove, winner and founder of Cydney’s Cave said: “It means so much to me to have won this award as I am only 12! In The Spotlight… Fairytale Face Paints Georgia Wormald

Georgia Wormald is multi-talented. She’s an occasional performer, with the much respected Hessle Amateur Operatic and Dramatic Society and she’s the go-to make-up artist at performances too; she paints and has sold her work, but most recently she’s set up in business as a face painter. Fairytale Face Paints is much in demand from private hirers for children’s parties, as well as at festivals and events as these begin to be rolled out again after lockdown. She’s had requests to travel far afield from clients who’d rather book her, than local competitors. Moreover Georgia has seen success from the first day she engaged with MC4C. She quickly took on board the valuable training we give in Enterprise and Business Skills and worked on a business plan which won the approval of the John Cracknell Youth Enterprise Bank. During Global Entrepreneurship Week last year, she was one of four winners of The Adam Corbally Enterprise Challenge, receiving a further £500 towards her business, as well as mentorship from Adam. Georgia has now taken up a role as one of four Ambassadors, helping MC4C to promote and recruit. Most recently, she has been awarded an Additional Restrictions Grant (ARG) giving her further funding to enable her business to be ready for an opening up of events and festivals, this summer.

Micro Business Support Amethyst Cleaning Leah Ariss I'm Leah Ariss and I have my own cleaning business, Amethyst Cleaning. I started my journey with MC4C in September 2018 and since then I haven't stopped. I've worked very hard to get where I am now. I have my own company car, and I clean 16 properties each week on my own. I provide high quality equipment to ensure the job is done to satisfaction. With the reviews I've had over the last 3 years I've had no struggle looking for work or having to advertise much at all. I have tried to expand and have people come on board but it's so hard when you've built up a business with high expectations for someone to then not follow them and lose you clients. So for now I'm happy at this pace, still setting it around my children. I manage all my accounts myself and pay both tax and national insurance contributions which I find an achievement really, as it means I've made my business that popular and demanding that I'm earning enough to pay these. I am in the midst of a career change and hoping if it takes off then I can still manage my business and try to employ a couple of people to cover my 64 cleans each month, which is a big task. I wouldn't have got off to such a good start without MC4C positively supporting me.

Judith’s Journey

It has been a great start to the year in my new role. I have been able to be more involved in supporting young entrepreneurs. I am enjoying taking/hosting the Big 13 sessions. As a past participant of the programme, I know the impact these skills had on me, so getting to share that with other young people is a delight. Sometimes pets also want to join the sessions! I have received financial support from the John Cracknel Youth Enterprise Bank and a startup grant from Hull city council through the Additional Restrictions Grant scheme. I really appreciate this support and belief in my business idea. This funding will go towards buying some equipment that I can use to practice recipes before I launch my busines, I am building up my equipment to make sure I can open the café as soon as I secure suitable premises. I am currently in talks with a potential property, which I am feeling positive about, if everything goes to plan, I hope to be up and running in the next few months.

After a piece of work undertaken by young entrepreneurs Engaging Education, who carried out research and consultations with young people, Hull City Council now have endorsed the new ‘Future You’ brand that will hopefully help young people identify suitable support routes for their training and career journey. Each of the Future You elements will offer guidance and advice in a number of ways to young people, whether that is help in looking for training and apprenticeships, youth entrepreneurship, looking for employment or other services such as mental health or other personal support. The different areas of ‘Future You’ have their own specialisms, so you will find the Making Changes for Careers project under the Youth Enterprise section and they will continue to support young people with starting their own business and also giving help into training and employment. If a young person is looking for an apprenticeship or training route then they would be signposted to the Future You – Hull Training & Adult Education. Keep an eye out for some of the case studies and social media graphics that will be appearing across most platforms in the near future to promote the new branding.
