Adam Corbally Challenge Winners! It was an absolute honour to deliver the Adam Corbally Enterprise Challenge again this year! Hull has become my second Home in recent years and, I am always amazed by what an Enterprising City Hull is. My Enterprise challenge is in partnership with MC4C and helps young people’s ideas become a reality with a cash grant from the John Cracknell Youth Enterprise Bank. I was delighted by the amount, and quality of entries and found it very hard to choose just one winner so, this year, 4 amazing young people with brilliant ideas will benefit from a cash injection of £500 each from the John Cracknell Youth Enterprise Bank! I was delighted to meet three of the Winners of my enterprise challenge on the 2nd of December. In a mastermind and brainstorming session together, I got to hear more about their Businesses, where they are now, and where they want to be. I admire how much work they have all put into their businesses already, I cant wait to see what they achieve in the future.

The Winners are: Georgia Wormald, An amazing up and coming face painter who is turning her passion into profits. This is a really fun idea and I am sure you will see Georgia at an event in the near future! David Riszko, A brilliant video games designer. As a massive gamer myself, I can’t wait to get my head together with David and see what ideas we come up with, Candy Crush look out! James Danville, Hull’s very own rapper. Someone who is not only making music, James is also making opportunities for the youth of Hull. The possibilities are endless for this idea. Holly Burton. I really can’t wait to meet Holly in person and find out more about her campaign to help the night life scene in Hull and, to see how we work together to create a safer and booming nightlife economy in Hull.

Behind the scene at the Global Entrepreneurship Awards evening The Global Entrepreneurship Week Awards Event is, of course, about celebrating the best of Enterprise and Enterprising people. For Event Manager Graham Henderson however, who also works as MC4C’s Youth Enterprise Advisor, it can be more about mixing desks and HDMI cables, tables and chairs and food and drink. Organising an event is not about doing everything but making sure that everyone involved actually does what they’ve said they’ll do. Like last year, the 2021 event was held online. This time however, it was hosted in the magnificent hi-tech facilities of C4DI’s studio in Hull. About a dozen people, including presenter Adam Corbally, and most of the MC4C team and guests, assembled here to have a drink and watch the “hybrid” show live. They were joined via Zoom by more than 100 entrepreneurial revellers, all out to enjoy the Friday night experience. Controlling the technicals was Dave Bower of Design over Technology who succeeded in keeping us heard and seen locally, nationally and internationally!

Judith’s Journey

Attending this years’ Global Entrepreneurship Week awards ceremony was a fantastic experience. I was interviewed by Adam Corbally who wanted to know about my business and how I came about doing the interviews in preparation of GEW. It was a fantastic opportunity to introduce my business to people from across 20 counties around the world. I was able to interview a young entrepreneur, Becca Pettman, the owner of Gray Rose Boutique who was awarded the “Young Person Who Showed the Most Commitment Award” on the evening. You can follow Becca’s journey here. As previously mentioned in the last newsletter, I spoke to a number of people in preparation for Global Entrepreneurship Week. This month I also interviewed Alex Codd, the Assistant Director Economic Development and Regeneration, who spoke about the importance of supporting entrepreneurs in Hull. You can find the interview here. I also spoke with Sue Pleasance, Hull BIPC Strategic Development Manager, who highlighted all the support the BIPC offers to people considering self-employment. You can watch her interview here. I had the opportunity to speak to the owner of Room 73, James Danville. James is a local music artist and producer who is passionate about supporting young upcoming musicians. James has grit and determination which are qualities I admire in entrepreneurs. Watch the interview here. You can also listen to James’s music here. I was appointed as the new business advisor. As a past participant of the programme, I know how going through the programme helped to build my confidence in my ability to run my own business. I am looking forward to using my experience to support other young people who want to become their own bosses. Charles Cracknell, Youth Enterprise and Microbusiness Manager, said "I am really pleased with the appointment of Judith as our new Youth Enterprise Adviser. She will make a brilliant addition to the team and, as a former MC4C participant, she will be able to sell the full benefits of the programme to young people."

Micro Business Support Zed Hair Zoe Mould

My name is Zoe Mould. I am a 26-year-old first-time mum from Hull and, I have a strong passion for hairdressing. I set up Zed Hair at home (a mobile hairdressing business) in the hope of flexible hours around my family and my own way of hairdressing to better suit my client’s needs. Although I am great at the hairdressing side of things, I do struggle when it comes to the paperwork. That's where Tracy Sheldon comes in. With the amazing step by step guidance, she has helped make the most terrifying documents seem like a walk in the park. Without Tracy's support I truly would have had no idea where to start. She has helped me understand my business so that I can make suitable decisions and continue to improve, grow and make plans for a brighter future. You can follow Zoe on Facebook and Instagram

RecreoVR Alex Lancaster & Sam Rooker Our families in residential care have had a particularly rough ride these past couple of years. We looked for an opportunity to help and, eventually found direction in an exciting new technology realm, virtual reality. We saw so many great and immersive apps out there but, very few focused on accessibility and engagement with our elderly. We then decided we wanted to achieve this through personalised, local content delivered through a simple to use, gazebased navigation headset. In need of guidance, we reached out to Humber Growth Hub. Through them, we were introduced to our advisor Tracy Sheldon. After an in-depth conversation about our aims, our sessions were tailored in a way to help us achieve our goals. After a few months, we developed our products and services and, fully branded and marketed our business. We would thoroughly recommend seeking this service to anyone looking to or, having started their own business. For further information visit our website or email us.

Gymophobics HULL Kaylee Carver I am pleased to announce I am now the new owner of Gymophobics, HULL. Tracy Sheldon supported me fully on my start-up business journey. She set me a checklist of objectives to complete and, having Tracy's support and guidance on a weekly basis (as well as at the end of a telephone or email) I was able to complete a business plan with a 12 months cash flow forecast. Gymophobics is a ladies only gym, unlike conventional Gyms, Gymophobics is a holistic facility which offers a unique prescription of exercise, diet and on-line classes with an emphasis on fast results. Our unique circuit takes the work out of workout. Each machine is driven by ‘AIR’ so there are no clanking weights to negotiate. Each member is prescribed a personal programme according to their needs/ goals/ abilities which is reviewed on a regular basis. It is not just about looking good, the health benefits are wide ranging too. Visit us on Instagram, Facebook, our website and our location.

John Cracknell Youth Enterprise bank Highly Commended for supporting young entrepreneurs in Hull

The John Cracknell Youth Enterprise Bank (JCYEB) was highly commended in the category of Social Impact in Enterprise at the National Enterprise Network Awards. The JCYEB, working with Hull City Council’s Youth Enterprise Micro Business Team, was recognised for raising over £110,000 to support #ExcludedUK, enterprising young people from local businesses, trade unions, charities, individuals and Hull City Council. This support fund has enabled JCYEB over last year, to issue the following: ▪ ▪

56 emergency grants to young people who were struggling with basic costs. 83 emergency business grants to young people who were excluded from the governments financial support for business, either because they had just set up or not paid enough tax along with those who did not have fixed costs. 32 restart grants to young people to help their businesses to come out of ‘semi’ closure and start to re trade.

The JCYEB also supported 16 aspiring young entrepreneurs with Test Market Grants as well as seven young care leavers access the Nathan Taylor Employment and Training Fund. Councillor Daren Hale, Leader of Hull City Council said: “I would like to congratulate the JCYEB for being Highly Commended by the business support peer group, the National Enterprise Network. The council is committed to working in partnership with organisations to mitigate the consequences faced by those businesses. In this case, enterprising young people did not receive the support they deserved and, this local initiative stepped up to the mark. It has now received recognition for what it did and, no doubt will continue to do, to support young entrepreneurs. “Our commitment to the small business sector is further seen with our Micro Biz Charter and our ARG Start up Grant, which I hope more start-ups in Hull and aspiring young entrepreneurs apply for.” Alex Till, Chairman, National Enterprise Network, said: “Every organisation featured in the 2021 National Enterprise Network Awards has demonstrated excellence in the delivery of enterprise support, either in the community or in educational settings, which focuses on embedding entrepreneurial spirit and enterprise. Selecting a winner is never an easy task but, this years’ entries provided a great insight into the fantastic enterprise-related initiatives and committed professionals working incredibly hard across the whole of England in these challenging times. I wish to congratulate the John Cracknell Youth Enterprise Bank for being highly commended at this years’ awards in the Social Impact category.”

In The Spotlight…

Hull’s young finest… My name is Beverley Johns. I have been a teacher for over 18 years in a variety of settings however, I am currently teaching apprentices in Engineering at Hull Tec. This is what inspired me to write this article. Young people often receive a negative review in the media yet, over my time at Tec, I have been amazed and felt humbled and saddened, by individual stories behind some of the young apprentices: what they have faced and overcome to become some of Hull’s finest engineers. Hull as a city, has been going through a transitional period for a few years. Leaving behind its’ old heritage of fisher and trawlermen, to competing in a renewable energy field with the likes of Siemens investing in our great city. At the heart of any city however is the people and, our young people are the city’s future. I am therefore fortunate to be part of ‘paving the way’ for some of our young engineers in forging their way in bringing Hull into a global market. Some of our learners have come from the city’s most deprived areas: facing and over coming the lure of criminal activities, drug and gang culture yet gone on to become team leaders or mangers of some of our cities finest engineering companies. I have seen young leaners, at 16, living independently get up at 6am to complete a full day of welding at the bottom of a ship’s dirty, grimy hull to achieve their qualification; I have witnessed a young learner carry his mum’s coffin and lost to drugs, go on to become a highly respected engineer; I have observed young apprentices who have learning difficulties push through those barriers to achieve and finally, I have seen young female, engineering apprentices strive to become engineers in a once male dominated industry. For me, as a teacher, witnessing these young people overcome their barriers and achieve, keeps my faith in the youth of today and, our hope for a promising future.

Frank Wyatt founded Enterprise Partnerships in 1990 after 20 years working in state and local government in Australia.
