Gillshill £5 Blossom Team!

participated in a mini round of Make £5 Blossom alongside two other Hull schools Longhill and Cavendish, and this is how they got on.

The team linked up with Ruth from St Stephen’s Shopping Centre as their business partner, and after a visit to the city centre to see how the shopping centre operates, they came back to school with plenty of ideas and enthusiasm.

The Big 13 skills were needed as they had to be creative and work as a team with their ideas, and problem solving was soon in action as they had to rethink their original idea because the materials for their mini key rings just didn’t work as they had hoped.

They soon turned their business in another direction, and this was making and selling sweet cones They made another retail visit for research and the all important purchases, but this time it was to Hancocks with sweets galore available!

The team drafted in some help from other children in the school to make up the cones and created a production line, with a keen eye on hygiene and safety as you can see with the PPE on show. The team had set themselves a target to make up 500 sweet cones, which they managed to achieve over a 3 day period

They then set up a school stall and had had a great time selling their products at £1 per cone, which left them with an overall tidy profit! 50% of their profit will be staying with school and 50% will be donated to the Joy for Joel charity that we support.

Great work all round from the Enterprise Team!

In The Spotlight…

Ashleigh Ward WardCosmetics

MC4C have recently started supporting Ashleigh, who wants to start a lash extension business offering a wide range of treatments too.

Ashleigh is currently working with ourselves to extend her knowledge around business and enterprise skills, we also informed her of a Government funded beauty course at Brown Sugar Training Academy in Hull

Ashleigh says “The MC4C team have helped change my life, not just my knowledge and training, but this has also impacted my children in a positive way and I’m very grateful to the team so far.”

We believe Ashleigh is going to do great things with her future career goals. Watch this space! To follow Ashleigh’s journey, find Ward Cosmetics on Facebook and Instagram.

MC C with Skill at the Brown Sugar Training Academy

Due to the number of young learners that are enrolling with our programme and who show a huge interest in this sector, we recently met with Jody, the owner of Brown Sugar to understand all the B-Skill courses they offer. Some have the knowledge and understanding around beauty and hair and are wanting to start this as a microbusiness. Jody has also become one of our team of mentors to our learners who can provide additional support. This link up is becoming very effective for all involved and can provide accreditation to enable our learners to progress further in their new career or to expand on their career pathway, when desired.

You might think that taking a set of business plans to the John Cracknell Youth Enterprise Bank for scrutiny would be a daunting prospect. But in the five or more years that he’s been doing so, MC4C’s Youth Enterprise Advisor, Graham Henderson has, more often than not, found it a rewarding and enjoyable experience. It’s certainly been literally rewarding for the young people who have worked on Market Test Grant applications with Graham, until they reach a standard that he believes will pass muster with the Bank. In August three more applicants received grants of approximately £250 each to kick start their microbusinesses. And the business sectors were widely diverse.

Danielle is a follower of punk and alternative fashion and is currently taking beauty courses with Brown Sugar in Hull, to qualify as a beautician specialising in alternative treatments Lilia uses her considerable talents to produce resin products, which were the subject of much praise at MC4C’s recent Open Day. Profits from her business, Lilia by Design, go to fund her interest in YouTube video editing and also towards her therapy dog Storm, who helps to support her autism. And if you came to that Open Day, you’ll have doubtless tasted some delicious, iced tea, the creation of Erunse of fledgling microbusiness Tea Branch. A law graduate, Erunse hopes to use his analytical skills to develop a range of teas for all tastes. These generous grants from the JCYEB will help these three young people ‘test the waters’ and hopefully embark on successful lives in business

Georgia on our minds…

Last month we flagged up the extraordinarily titled “Urinetown” performed for a week, by Hessle Theatre Company at Hull Truck in September and starring Youth Enterprise Ambassador and former MC4C participant, Georgia Wormald. Graham and Judith from the MC4C team went to see the show and had a very entertaining evening. The music, the set, the acting, singing and dancing were of a highly professional standard. Georgia said, “Musical theatre is a huge passion of mine and Urinetown definitely made me step out of my comfort zone, which is a wonderful thing as a performer. It’s an hilarious show and it was an amazing feeling bringing so much laughter to the audiences each night.” The show imagines a dystopian future when world drought has meant private toilets are banned and people have to pay to “have a pee”! Despite the bizarre storyline, the company should be congratulated on a great performance And Georgia sparkled in one of the lead roles, with some incredible singing and dancing. She’s not only a highly talented artist and face painter, but could also have chosen a career on the stage! She says, “We had some wonderful reviews and although it may have been an utterly bonkers show, everyone left with a smile on their face. Hessle Theatre Company is an outstanding group to be a part of and is a huge part of my life.”
