YOUTH ENTERPRISE & MICROBUSINESS NEWSLETTER EDITION 3 - 2022

The Be Enterprising Group of enterprise teachers and practitioners held a virtual meeting in February for only the second time in two years due to the pandemic, with a good turnout of around 13 schools/organisations attending. Planning of some exciting future enterprising events was discussed. One of the agenda items was the roll out of some STEM sessions for schools that would incorporate the Big 13 Skills and would be funded by Hull City Council & the Youth Bank. Katie from the company Labrascals, a young entrepreneur herself, was on hand to give an overview of how the sessions could be delivered to the schools and explained that they could express an interest through the Youth Enterprise team. Nine schools have already signed up to be part of the sessions. The John Cracknell Youth Enterprise Bank also kindly donated £75.00 to each of the schools that were in attendance so they could use the funding to create some new enterprise activities with their students within their schools.

Five Pound Blossom is Back! As part of Hull were Enterprise Dickinson, projects.

Hull's #FutureYou Campaign, Class 4D of Cavendish Primary in introduced to their, 'Make £5 Blossom' project by Youth Officer Mike Notarantonio and their business partner Ron who donated £150 to help the young people kick-start their

At the introduction session at the school the young people learnt about the Big 13 Enterprise Skills. The first one they worked on was teamwork. Ron Dickinson said "I am really looking forward to working with 4D as we both learn about the importance of the Big 13 Enterprise Skills. The skills that pupils learn at school through £5 Blossom will enable them to be very enterprising students, employees and who knows, it might inspire them to set up their own business."

Judith’s Journey

Hull – ‘the most enterprising city in the world’ I had the opportunity to speak with all four new Youth Enterprise Ambassadors. It was inspiring to see their desire to help other young people become their own boss. Watch the series ‘Judith meets the Ambassadors’.

The 8th annual Microbiz matters day took part in March. I had fun helping organise a video shoot for this event which took place in Scarborough. I had the privilege of talking about my journey as Youth Enterprise Champion and an aspiring entrepreneur with Tony Robinson, author of The Happipreneur and co-founder of MicroBizMatters Day. I am an advocate for youth entrepreneurship especially in my home city, so I encourage you to watch the video to see why Hull is described as the most enterprising city in the world.

The Big 13 Enterprise Skills training Changes

Following covid restrictions being relaxed, we are now accepting face to face training at our offices in the Lil Bilocca building. Although we are still following safety procedures such as socially distancing, wearing masks and only allowing a small number of participants in at once, this is a massively encouraging step towards ‘normal’. Charlene Porteous Youth Enterprise Advisor said “Having the young people back in the office, is amazing. Seeing their enthusiasm and motivation in real life, is something I thrive off and makes me a happier person”. This has given some young people the opportunity to learn again without using Zoom or Teams. The ‘Big 13’ Enterprise Skills training programme is designed to improve and develop the young people’s understanding of the skills needed to be successful in business and/or employment. Being able to help build their confidence is one of the goals of MC4C.

We’ve gone Hybrid! There are at least three definitions of the word “hybrid” in the dictionary. However, the one closest to MC4C’s kind of hybrid, says it’s: “ something…..that has two different types of components, performing essentially the same function”. And it’s one way that we can now deliver Big 13 and Business Skills group sessions. Like millions of people around the globe, we discovered Zoom and Teams in March 2020, since when, most of our delivery has been by remote video links, most commonly to participants’ phones, or in some cases to laptops or tablets. Many were uncomfortable about turning on their camera in group sessions and links could be unreliable. Many who joined had poor internet connectivity and sometimes a 121 session had to be held as an audio phone call. But for nearly two years we persevered. We signed people up to our programme online, registered them with HMRC and interviewed some for our YouTube channel this way too. But now that we’re able to see people face-to-face, (though still with social distancing in place), we can cater both for those who would prefer to sit with us in our training room and those who prefer to stay at home, but join remotely, within the same session. We still have a few technical challenges to overcome, such as how to share a screen within the video call and send the shared screen to a projector for those in the training room, but we’re getting there! It's just another way that the MC4C team is flexible and adaptable. Whatever your needs, we can offer you the best personalised solution to help you find work or selfemployment.
