OpenEnterpriseYouthDay!

Let’s have an Open Day, they said! A great idea an opportunity to meet with our friends, colleagues and supporters while showcasing the extraordinary talents of our young entrepreneurs and their new start up businesses. Our new building, Lil Bilocca House, has the perfect venue for a large event the former Sports Hall. A bit drab, plain and echoey perhaps, but with a bit of TLC it could work.

MC4C Youth Enterprise Advisor Graham Henderson, used to work as a freelance Events Producer and with the rest of the team and the addition of 6 young businesses, transformed the space from Sports Hall to Exhibition Hall The layout of the room, with a central ‘island‘ encouraged those attending to move around the room in a systematic way, holding informative discussions with the entrepreneurs, and experiencing their diverse offerings

Sammy’s stall was full of so many lovely smells, and so many different ideas for using wax melts So wonderful to hear how she managed to get a place in a salon and then also making the other products on an evening, around her children and during lockdown It was so amazing to see what they had all achieved with the right support and encouragement, and they all seemed so confident, and you could see how passionate they were about their business ”

The ambience created encouraged these, in some cases, ‘shy’ entrepreneurs to explain, describe and sell their story from idea to stall Visitors had the chance to talk with a games developer, music producer, two beauticians offering nail and lash treatments, producers of bespoke gifts and try a taste of a new iced tea recipe And when they’d done the rounds, they could enjoy a delicious buffet lunch too!

“I thoroughly enjoyed meeting the young people and hearing about their enterprising work They were all excellent, great ideas and I am sure they will all be a success. They each had stories to tell about their experiences and demonstrated the hard work they had put into developing their business and the invaluable support they had received to get where they are today.”

“I found the event really useful and it really helped me to open up to strangers and speak to them confidently. I learnt the importance of my unique selling point and how this made people more interested. I enjoyed getting all the positive feedback from people. Lots of people showed interest in my website and talk of Christmas presents being ordered I am very grateful to MC4C for this opportunity and look forward to continuing working with them ”

The young people will share their journey about the Big 13 Enterprise Skills they have used at the end event and reveal what profit they have managed to make (hopefully) before returning the original loan, keeping 50% of the profit and donating the other 50% of the profit to the two local Duchenne charities we support.

The idea of running a not instantly appeal, but you would have changed your mind if you’d joined us on the MC4C trip to York in July A group of Hull City Councillors, managers and three young entrepreneurs from the MC4C programme, travelled by minibus to see the development known as Spark, on Piccadilly, close to York City Centre It’s a two storey collection of former shipping containers, designed originally to transport goods safely across the high seas and now repurposed for start up businesses It enables fledgling business owners to begin to trade on low rents in a prime location Spark owners describe it as “York’s first choice destination for eating, drinking and shopping “ And that’s certainly true These upcycled shipping containers incubate start ups and provide a base for businesses to grow and expand Two food outlets that we spoke to on our visit were now able to relocate soon and start paying commercial rates in the city centre Spark is home to a great selection of Yorkshire’s independent traders. From food to event space It would be great to have our very own Spark in Hull Here’s what the young entrepreneurs had to say about the day: Matty said “I found it very useful, seeing small businesses grow from having that start up stability! I didn’t speak to the vendors but I listened to their stories and was very inspired by what they said! I didn’t want to leave... the vibe there was astonishing” Danielle said “I absolutely loved the day trip to York. Not only was the entire place my sort of vibe, there was enough people, but it wasn't crowded. I loved the fact everyone was like a family. I specifically spoke to one of the beauticians there as that's what my business is going to be. She was really helpful not only telling me what a good idea the project was but also gave me some helpful pointers. I'd love to be able to run my business from something along the same lines I would happily call somewhere like that a home for my business” Erunse said “The vendors were very informative. I left with a more optimistic outlook on sustainable developments such as localising agriculture. A place like Spark needs an iced tea or healthy drink dispensary, so I would definitely set up shop there ”

When we told her we’d spotted her picture in the theatre publicity, Georgia said “Oh dear, yes it was me. It’s a very strange show, the poster says it all!”

In The Spotlight… Georgia

All these are questions we’ve helped Erunse answer at MC4C. He recently joined us on the visit to York to see a community of start up businesses housed in former shipping containers. As you can see Erunse took the opportunity to sample York Spark’s excellent street food! He also joined our Open Day in August, serving his own iced fruit tea recipe. We’re sure he’ll go far! – goes down the pan!

Youth Enterprise Ambassador, face painter, artist and former MC4C participant, Georgia Wormald, is treading the boards in Hull in September. A long time member of Hessle Theatre Company, Georgia plays one of the leads in the extraordinary story of “Urinetown”. Yes, you heard right! In a world that has faced a 20 year drought, private toilets are banned and the population is forced to answer the call of nature in public conveniences. To quote the show’s publicity, “Join the desperate crusade in this riotous musical comedy that will have you laughing all the way to the bathroom… ” Erunse has a degree in Law from The University of Hull and MC4C is helping him find work in the legal profession. He is also a big supporter of healthy living and he wants to produce refreshing drinks such as iced teas and fruit smoothies. MC4C has also helped him draw up a business plan which led to a grant from The John Cracknell Youth Enterprise Bank. Some of the questions he needed to answer were, ‘What do I need to be able to produce drinks for sale from a home kitchen?’ ‘Do I need a licence?’ ‘Where do I source sustainable bottles?’ and ‘Should I bottle the drinks myself or use a commercial bottling company?’

Urinetown runs from Tuesday 6th to Saturday 10th September at Hull Truck Theatre. Click here to buy tickets.
