TOP 5 THINGS TO KNOW

Werner recognized with award

Werner Enterprises, Inc. was recently awarded Transport Topics’ Sustainability Pathfinder Award, presented in recognition of the company’s continued leadership in the area of sustainability. The award recognizes companies that excel in promoting environmental responsibility and implementing innovative sustainable practices.

As part of its broader strategy to reduce its carbon footprint by 55% by 2035, Werner actively tests and validates advanced fuel technologies to reduce emissions across its fleet, the company said via a release. The company also focuses on increasing fuel efficiency through advanced trailer aerodynamics, use of auxiliary power units and maintaining one of the youngest fleets in the industry.

Werner was one of two recipients of the award, introduced last year, the other going to IMC Logistics of Collierville, Tenn. The awards were presented March 12 at the ATA Technology & Maintenance Council’s Annual Meeting in Nashville.

Catalyst expands city’s coworking space

A new coworking space is bringing 17,000 square feet to the local business community. Catalyst offers companies, startups and entrepreneurs desks and private suites ranging from 800 to 1,400 square feet. The development can eventually accommodate up to 800 professionals in a range of office configurations.

Silicon Prairie News reported UNeMed, Bio Nebraska, Invest Nebraska, RespirAI Medical, ViaRx, Forward Movement, LLC, Members.MD and Pour Decisions are among the first companies moving in. Invest Nebraska will use the Catalyst space as a satellite location while retaining its Lincoln office as its central location.

Coworking desks start at $350 per month, private spec suites ranging from 800 to 1,400 square feet begin at $4,000 and traditional office spaces up to 7,500 square feet are also available for customization.

Pawnee City offers unique incentive

In a bold new initiative, Pawnee City is offering families a $50,000 incentive package to move to the Pawnee County community. The city announced the program March 12.

The recruiting tool highlights new residential construction by the community, which will produce 25 new single-family houses, with the first houses expected to be completed and ready to move into by mid-summer. To attract residents, the Pawnee City Community Foundation is offering $50,000 in down payment assistance to help recruit families to purchase one of the new homes.

The county seat, Pawnee City was incorporated in 1858. Per the 2010 census, the community had a population of 878, down from 1,033 in 2000, a 15% decrease. For more information, visit pawneecitynewhomes.com.

Streetcar spawns new development

GreenSlate Development announced March 12 a forthcoming multifamily residential development to be built along the future streetcar route. The five-story, $45 million project will be built at 35th and Farnam Streets, the site of the former WOWT-TV building, which will be demolished to make room for the new construction.

GreenSlate, which was responsible for the original redevelopment of the Blackstone District 10 years ago, is developing the building with John Lund, founder of The Lund Company of Omaha.

The new development will offer 180 studio and one- and two-bedroom apartment units, ranging from $1,200 to $2,800 per month in rent, as reported by Grow Omaha.

Application for $5 million in Tax Increment Financing will go before the Omaha Planning Board in April and demolition of the old television building is expected to begin in late spring. Completion is anticipated by early 2027.

NCTA team strikes gold

The Nebraska College of Technical Agriculture Crops Judging Team captured the top team placement and several individual awards in two recent contests.

The team topped a field of 100 competitors from seven colleges and universities on February 15 at the University of Nebraska Lincoln. On March 8, NCTA again captured team honors, this time at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Ind. In both competitions, four team members placed in the top five individually.

Crops judging competitions provide hands-on experience for students pursuing careers in agronomy and related industries, the school said in a press release. The squad will compete April 9 to 12 at West Texas A&M in Canyon, Texas, for the NACTA national competition.

COVER story

“WE ALWAYS SAID WE’RE ALL JUST COWORKERS, EVERYONE’S EQUAL.” KARA HABROCK, CENTER, SECOND-GENERATION PRESIDENT AND CEO

She’s The Boss ROLOFF CONSTRUCTION CHIEF GREW UP IN THE BUSINESS

When Kara Habrock, president and CEO of Roloff Construction, left home to go to college, she was sure about only two things.

“When I left Louisville, Nebraska, I said I’m never living in Louisville again and I’m never working for my dad again,” she said with a laugh. “Guess where I live? Never say never when you’re young, you know? You just don’t understand the value of what you have.”

Dining table view

At age 7, Habrock certainly didn’t understand the value of the company her father, Lorenze “Larry” Roloff, founded in 1975 at the family dining room table. Roloff, the kind of guy who always judged the quality of his day by the amount of mud on his boots, launched the company installing commercial and municipal clean water, storm sewer and sanitary sewer systems, snaking giant concrete tubes underground.

Growing up, Habrock would have more than what she calls a “dinner

table seat” to the business, recruited as cheap and available labor as kids of entrepreneurs frequently are.

“His deal with me, long story short, was you do everything I ask you to do. I’m not necessarily gonna pay you for it, I’ll make sure that your college is taken care of,” she said. “That led to me being on call, if you will, and doing a lot of odd jobs and, quite frankly, not-so-glamorous jobs. It taught me to work hard but it was hard to see the value in it at the time, not getting paid and not getting to work with my friends. But boy, coming out of college debt-free, it was a huge advantage.”

Habrock gave a good go to her vow of never darkening Roloff Construction’s door as an employee again. Entering the information technology field after college, she was a rising star in the corporate world. However, the job called for constant travel and after she and her husband, Monty Habrock — who just happened to be a Roloff employee — decided to start a family, the shine of the job started to fade.

Never say never when you’re young, you know? You just don’t understand the value of what you have.

“I had my first child in 1997, and that made getting on a plane two times a week a little difficult,” she said. “[Monty] ran a crew in the field and that’s a six in the morning till six at night job sometimes. So it wasn’t like you could have your husband do the daycare drop-offs and pickups when you’re out traveling. After about a year of that I thought, ‘This can’t continue.’”

A little breather

Seated together at a family friend’s wedding party, Habrock shared with her father her frustration over the path her career had taken. He suggested she lend some of her expertise in Roloff’s office, getting the company’s technology straightened out.

“He said ‘We’ve got some issues at the office and I don’t know what this Y2K thing even means, but I figure you’re in technology and you know more than me,’” she recalled. “We’re not talking about a big deal here; we’re talking a few computers, nothing major, but they had never updated software. They’d never fully implemented software. They were still doing a lot of processes by hand. I think my dad knew it was going to be a mess.”

Habrock agreed to come in and help on a part-time basis “just as a breather” but as is probably obvious by now, became more and more involved with ways to improve the back office side of the business and position it to accommodate growth. Which, it should be said, was impeccably timed because the company was in the midst of a robust business cycle starting in the mid-1990s.

“I landed there at the right time with enough knowledge of how bigger

-

businesses were run to know, OK, we’ve got to get a lot of things cleaned up here for the company to survive,” she said. “I’m a fixer by nature and I’m very curious so while I’m in there and hearing all these things besides the Y2K stuff, I’m seeing problems.”

FROM FOUNDER LARRY ROLOFF’S KITCHEN TABLE IN 1979, THE COMPANY HAS GROWN INTO A MAJOR PLAYER IN UNDERGROUND WATER AND SEWER SYSTEMS

She’s The Boss

ROLOFF CONSTRUCTION CHIEF GREW UP IN THE BUSINESS

I’ve just tried to lead in a way where it didn’t look like I was swooping in trying to change what was already a good thing. I was just trying to take what was there and make it better.

“Dad was a working owner, he loved being in equipment and he loved being in the dirt. Honestly, he really didn’t know that much about [technology] and he trusted me. He was like, ‘I don’t care, as long as I’m in a machine.’ He just let me do what I needed to do and so I started digging in and before I knew it, I was there full-time.”

Opportunity knocks, Roloff digs

The catalyst for the company’s booming growth was in part due to strategic planning and in part due to maximizing opportunities in the market. Roloff expanded its services to include paving, which made the firm a general contractor for its projects. Then, the city of Omaha undertook the task of sewer separation work, offering a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for the budding company.

“Sewer separation is very difficult work and not the most popular of work to go after because of how complex it is,” Habrock said. “That was the kind of work that my dad got excited about, you know, we can figure this out. We started bidding that separation work and getting a lot of that and quickly we became a leader in it. Omaha was exploding then so there was a lot of work. Timing was on our side, I guess.”

Habrock said the scope of what her father created, and what she had helped build, hit her in 2001 when Roloff Construction was hired to do the utility work running under a swath of downtown upon which would eventually stand Schwab Field and the CHI Health Center.

“That was the biggest job in company history and I think, in some ways, it kind of put us on the map,” she said. “We weren’t Kiewit by any means, but we weren’t a small mom-and-pop anymore, either. We were hitting 100 employees and the company felt really big to us. Some people might laugh at that, but we don’t care; we are who we are.”

The corner office

Within three years, Kara and Monty purchased a majority stake in the business and along with Bob Norris and Ron Siwa, who also purchased shares, comprised the executive leadership team. Habrock said being the founder’s daughter afforded her a few luxuries as far as acceptance by the front line, admitting that advantage over other women in the construction field. However, she said she was also driven to justify her position through her job performance as well.

- KARA HABROCK, PRESIDENT AND CEO, ROLOFF CONSTRUCTION

“For me, I didn’t feel there were any barriers because it was part of my growing up,” she said. “I will fully admit that it was easier for me. I’m not saying I’m a nepo baby or anything like that, but it’s easier when it’s your family’s business and I have never disputed that.

“That being said, it’s harder in some regards because you are fighting that nepo baby perception. When you come behind a dad who is literally idolized and respected, I felt like I had to do as well as he did to live up to that. I’ve just tried to lead in a way where it didn’t look like I was swooping in trying to change what was already a good thing. I was just trying to take what was there and make it better.”

In her role as an owner, a unique position for a woman in the construction field in general, Habrock has struck the balance between leading with her own voice and drawing heavily on the expertise around her.

“I haven’t mentioned my husband enough and I really have to give him credit for making me as successful as I am,” she said. “Monty spent a good number of years in the field running a crew and he’s talked me off of many bad decisions because he knew how something would play in the field. He knew when to say, ‘Well, it’s not a bad idea, but I would maybe tweak it this way,” or ‘Yeah, I wouldn’t say it like that.’”

Eyes on the future

Most recently, Habrock has steered the company to its next transformative event, that of converting Roloff Construction to employee ownership in January, something that grew out of work formally defining the culture that made the company so successful.

“I’m very proud of this,” she said. “Since 2019, we’ve been on an intentional culturebuilding practice here, doing a lot of work with that, defining the culture, practicing the culture, hiring according to culture, managing our employees according to culture. That’s made a big difference in our company.

“We felt this employee stock ownership plan would work because of that, and the fact that it feels everyone’s rowing in the same direction. We’re actually in the process of some strategic planning currently, and now it’s time to let them determine where it goes. I’m certainly still involved and I’m not retiring anytime soon but it’s kind of fun now to say ‘OK, you guys tell me.’ We have always disliked titles around here, we always said we’re all just coworkers, everyone’s equal. Now that’s literally true. Now we’re all owners.”

WOMEN IN construction Building the Future

WOMEN MORE COMMON IN CONSTRUCTION FIELD, BUT MUCH WORK REMAINS

I would be in a meeting and I would be scared to speak up about something even if I knew the answer. I don’t know if it was imposter syndrome or what, but I just would not be able to.

Construction remains one of those industries where women are vastly outnumbered in almost every facet. One local organization is working to change that.

Dawn Staley is a rarity in her field. Not just for being a project engineer with MCL Construction, but for having a backstory in the male-dominated construction industry that stretches back to her formative years.

“My dad had a construction company” she said, “I worked for him during my teen years.”

Staley considers her official entry into construction to have kicked off in 2020, starting as a laborer. She admitted feeling some intimidation when she started in the field and credits several mentors and advocates for helping her get her footing.

“I originally thought I was going into the residential side of construction but there were more opportunities commercially,” she said. “When I was about 19, I switched over my focus to commercial construction.

“When I started and I got on my first job site, there were just

- DAWN STALEY, PROJECT ENGINEER, MCL CONSTRUCTION

so many people who had so much experience. That was a little overwhelming at first, but I noticed early on if I was willing to work really hard I truly had advocates on the jobsite with me that would help push me through any of those uncertainties.”

Hard work and a little help

Staley didn’t lack in the hard work department. While working on demolition crews as a laborer she attended night school to earn her construction management degree, a diploma that ultimately led to her current position. At each step, she was keenly aware of being in a distinct minority as a woman in construction.

“Usually, the jobs I’ve been on there are maybe 250 people working on the job site and usually out of those 200 or so people, two or three of them were female,” she said. “In the classroom, there were maybe two or three women to 15 males. That was kind of the ratio. Now that I’m in the office at this company we have 255 employees and about 40 of those employees are women.”

In addition to her worksite mentors, Staley also credits her membership in the Greater Omaha Chapter of the National Association of Women in Construction, of which she is a board member, for helping to develop her confidence despite often being the lone female in the room.

“When I first started being a project engineer at this company, there weren’t a lot of women here doing that,” she said. “It was hard to talk to people who were coming from the same perspective. Sometimes at work, I would be in a meeting and I would be scared to speak up about something even if I knew the answer. I don’t know if it was imposter syndrome or what, but I just would not be able to.

“Most of the time I’m in a meeting with the owner, the architect, all the engineers and our project team, even some of the subcontractors, their foremen and project managers. Being in that room full of people and you’re talking about this serious issue, I’d have an idea about something and I didn’t want to say anything. With [NAWIC] it’s like a safe space and after a while, when I went back to work, I found I was able to speak up a lot easier.”

Work left to do

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, women represented about 11% of the construction industry in 2023, 4.3% of which were in trade jobs. The overall percentage has grown slowly over the previous 20 years, CONTINUED

WOMEN IN construction Building the Future

I think one of the biggest hurdles for women in construction is understanding that there’s nothing you can’t do.

inching up about one percent, but the number of women in the trades, while smaller, has grown steadily, having almost doubled since 2003.

Being in such a minority is a beast that feeds itself; women and girls are often turned off at the thought of being the only female in a department or on the site, which has caused numbers to grow more slowly.

Like many women, Tori De Jesus, operations manager at West Omaha Winsupply and owner of Blazers to Blueprints Boutique, experienced the perils of being a woman in a male-dominated industry.

“There are definitely more women as customer service reps and on the admin side,” she said. “As I went into management I was the only woman on the manager side. In one company, I was one of only three women in a company of about 60 to 70 men and I was the only manager. It was definitely intimidating.

“Fortunately, I was mentored by some incredible men who were my allies and who gave me those opportunities, but there was a lot of times where I had to struggle and I wasn’t always accepted. I definitely had to prove myself.”

- TORI DE JESUS, NAWIC PRESIDENT

De Jesus, NAWIC president, said the organization exists to help women find support and strength in numbers.

“The mission of NAWIC is to empower women in this industry and to provide professional development,” she said. “More than that, it’s personal development and gaining the confidence to go for what you want.

“I think one of the biggest hurdles for women in construction is understanding that there’s nothing you can’t do. There’s so many opportunities out there from the administration side to going into a ditch or driving a vehicle, and you can move through the industry, too. If you don’t like one thing, you can move to the next thing, even create your own business.”

Times are changing

Candy Sage, project administrator with Lueder Construction, has nearly 30 years in the industry. She said she’s seen a lot of changes regarding women in the construction field.

It builds our confidence as women to have that support system and for other people to understand what you’re going through.
- CANDY SAGE, PROJECT

ADMINISTRATOR, LUEDER CONSTRUCTION

“Being a purchasing manager, I really had to earn respect from the field that I do my job well,” she said. “I had to push back on a lot of those men just to do my job. I see a lot of women today with a lot of confidence and men who are more respectful to women than they were back in the early nineties.”

At the same time, many of the same challenges exist, things that Sage has seen NAWIC address in its membership through one-on-one interactions, regular meetings and special programming.

“Number one, it’s networking,” Sage said by way of benefit to members. “Number two is, I have seen a lot of women come into NAWIC who are quiet and shy and I’ve just watched them blossom.

“I think it builds our confidence as women to have that support system and for other people to understand what you’re going through, which is huge. I think it’s more personal and empowers members and gives them more confidence to take into their role at work.”

Sage also said that through NAWIC’s presence, such as in job fairs, she’s starting to see a change in public schools’ attitudes toward presenting construction jobs to male and female students as a viable career choice.

“When I was growing up, I remember them saying, ‘You gotta go to college, you gotta go to college,’ and I don’t have any college experience. Everything I’ve learned has been self-taught and within the industry, and I make a pretty good living for myself,” she said. “I think more of these schools today are opening up and educating kids and putting them on a path to a career.

“We’re exposing these young people to careers where you don’t necessarily have to go to college. There are these trades out there that you can make a good living. It’s good to know that we can help these kids realize they have options.”

WOMEN IN construction

WE ASK YOU!

For the past 50 years, the Midlands Business Journal has been a leading voice promoting the business and industry of greater Omaha. During that time we’ve asked a lot of people a lot of questions and that’s the thinking behind We Ask You!, a new feature where we get feedback from a segment of the business community. This week, in honor of Women’s History Month, we polled members of the National Association of Women in Construction’s Greater Omaha Chapter.

WHO OR WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO ENTER THE CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY?

I was raised on a farm where I developed a deep respect for the trade professionals who brought their expertise and knowledge to support our family business. Their skill and dedication left a lasting impression on me. Working in the electrical industry, I’ve found a similar sense of camaraderie and purpose. I feel at home among the men and women in this trade, listening to their ideas, learning about new technologies and seeing the pride they take in their work. One of the things I enjoy most in recruiting for our company is getting to meet new people and introducing them to the opportunities this field has to offer.

My mom, an interior designer, inspired me to enter the construction industry. Our house was always filled with color boards, plans, samples and photos. I loved looking through the plans, imagining myself walking through the buildings. She would take me to new houses under construction around my hometown and we’d walk through the framed structures, guessing which room was which. She also made sure I learned a thing or two about trespassing!

In the beginning, I loved watching my father, uncle and grandfather find joy in constructing bridges across seemingly impossible gaps. As I grew, I discovered a found family in the industry. They would laugh, sweat and fight together, pushing what’s possible without sacrificing safety, quality or each other. I couldn’t wait to join in the family and build something incredible.

My father was an architect and he said I was his biggest critic when I was younger. He thought I would pursue a career in design but I found construction more exciting. He always would make a joke that I went to the “dark side.”

Kiley Keck ASSISTA NT PROJECT MANAGER, BLUCOR CONSTRUCTION GROUP

I have always been around the construction industry as my dad was a heavy machinery mechanic and I learned to operate bulldozers at a young age. When I graduated high school, I started working part time for an engineering firm while I was in college. I really enjoy being a small part of the design process as well as watching the designs come to fruition.

Bobbi Jo Lang

CLI ENT RELATIONSHIP MANAGER, OLSSON

I built a bridge out of balsa wood in the seventh grade. I loved the challenge of positioning the light, seemingly flimsy wood sticks in a way that could support a significant amount of weight. My bridge held the most weight in the class. From that time on, I was interested in how things went together for an end result of a strong, secure structure.

SE NIOR PROJECT MANAGER, TURNER CONSTRUCTION COMPANY

MIDLANDS BUSINESS JOURNAL

I have been working in the architecture, engineering and construction industry for over 30 years. It hasn’t always been easy as a woman in this industry but the network of women I’ve met is amazing. My father has always worked in the construction industry, so I grew up seeing the results of his work. We would drive by a building and he would say, “I helped build that,” which always made me so proud of him. Now I can drive by a building and tell Dad, “I helped build that.”

I worked in human resources and ended up working for a large general contractor. I enjoyed it so much that I eventually took a position that would allow me to be onsite and I’m constantly on the move and learning every day. My biggest inspiration is my project manager because he encourages my learning and growth within the industry as well as supporting my outreach and role in my local NAWIC Chapter. I’m also inspired by my daughter who constantly makes me want to be the best version of myself at all times.

Since I was a little girl, I knew I wanted to be in construction. I grew up surrounded by the industry and I was always captivated by the process of bringing ideas to life. The ability to envision a structure before it exists, the problem-solving behind every build, and the energy of the job site fascinated me. I didn’t see many girls pursuing this kind of work, which only fueled my determination to push boundaries and challenge norms. I was eager to prove that passion and skill — not gender — define success in this field. Whether in the classroom, on-site or in leadership roles, I have always sought ways to break stereotypes and inspire others to pursue their paths in construction.

I entered the industry by accident. Sales is at the heart of what I do, so when a position to rent and sell construction equipment became available, I jumped on it — at almost 50 years of age. On Day 2 of employment, our HR director reached out to me and told me to join NAWIC. The women in the industry have been my inspiration. At almost 60 years of age, I take great pride in mentoring other women and youth about the construction industry.

Three Key Trends in Agribusiness Right Now

Agriculture is an ever-changing industry, shaped by economic shifts, supply and demand cycles, and technological advancements. Today, three key trends are making a significant impact on farmers, ranchers and other agribusinesses.

First, record-high cattle prices are reshaping the beef market. A reduced U.S. cow herd, driven by drought and financial pressures, has led to historically high prices for cattle. While consumer demand remains strong, supply constraints will likely keep prices elevated in the near term.

Second, inflation, interest rates and trade policies continue to challenge agribusinesses. Rising costs for inputs like feed, fertilizer and equipment put pressure on already tight margins. Trade policies and tariffs could also increase production costs and affect international demand for U.S. ag products.

Finally, technology is transforming agribusiness, with data-driven decision-making becoming a game-changer across both livestock and crop production. From AI-powered tracking in dairy operations to precision agriculture techniques in row cropping, farmers and ranchers are finding new ways to optimize efficiency and reduce costs.

Agriculture has always been cyclical, and while challenges persist, there are also incredible opportunities for those who embrace innovation. The key to success in today’s agribusiness landscape is adaptability.

At FNBO, we understand the challenges and opportunities in agriculture. As a family-owned bank with deep roots in the ag industry, we’re here to help agribusinesses navigate change with expert guidance and tailored financial solutions.

INVESTING IN retirement The Purse Strings MORE WOMEN TAKING THE LEAD IN MANAGING, PLANNING THEIR

There are different considerations when looking at financial planning for women than there are for men.

Of all the areas of personal and professional life where women have made strides toward claiming their power, the march towards financial independence may arguably be the most impactful. Even as universal wage inequities persist and the C-suite remains elusive in many industries, women have, in growing numbers, taken steps to educate themselves on money matters and taken a leading role in their finances for the long haul.

“Historically, women have been an underserved minority by the financial services industry,” said Jordan Larsen, wealth planning associate with Trusted Wealth Partners. “Although women are making significant strides, their financial acumen is still less than that of male counterparts.”

Progress and challenges

Larsen shared statistics that show just how far women have come and how far they still have yet to go via Fidelity’s 2024 Women & Investing study, which showed 70% of women now own stock market investments, an 18% increase from the previous year, and Forbes’ findings that 70% of

women feel confident about paying bills, budgeting and managing debt.

The other side of those respective coins, however, revealed 9% more women than men in the Fidelity study report feeling overwhelmed by managing their finances and less than 1 in 3 women in the Forbes poll felt confident in matters of saving for emergencies, retirement and building wealth.

“While the progress is encouraging,” Larsen said, “there are still areas where women are not quite catching up, and one of the biggest challenges is financial confidence. This lack of confidence can have a significant impact on their ability to accumulate wealth and make informed financial decisions.

“When you factor in the pay gap and the increased likelihood of women taking career breaks to care for children, it’s clear that despite the strides in financial involvement and literacy, there is still plenty of room for growth. Helping women build financial confidence and empowering them with knowledge is key to continuing this positive momentum.”

Despite these challenges, women represent a powerful bloc of the nation’s economic health. According to statistics by McKinsey & Company,

“Koley

women are projected to control $30 trillion in wealth by 2030, roughly equal to the nation’s GDP. Recognizing this, financial services companies have stepped up their efforts to serve female investors like never before.

“It’s crucial for women to partner with a financial professional who empowers them to take an active role in their finances by involving them in the conversation and providing ongoing education throughout the process,” Larsen said. “At Trusted Wealth Partners, we offer pro bono financial consultations on a needs-based basis and provide a wealth of educational resources on our website.

“We understand that life can present unexpected challenges and we take pride in supporting our clients through these times. Whether you’re a spouse who was previously not involved in financial discussions who’s suddenly widowed or going

through a divorce, a trusted professional can guide you through the complexities of your finances.”

Basic knowledge lacking

The problem goes beyond women in career-track and management positions to issues of basic financial literacy. According to study results reported last fall by Moneyzine, Americans as a group don’t rate well when it comes to understanding the basics of debt, credit, saving and other core financial concepts. The percentage of people rated to have poor financial literacy grew from 20% to 25% between 2017 and 2023, the study found, with factors of gender, age, race and socioeconomic status all affecting segments of the population differently.

For instance, 62% of males in the U.S. demonstrate general financial literacy compared to 52% of females, consistent with global figures, but women trail men in investing acumen by 15%.

Among lower earners, a demographic whose margin for error in financial matters is slim, the picture is even more troubling. Only 38% of individuals earning

less than $50,000 annually and 28% of people earning under $25,000 per year are financially literate. The disparities across communities — only 25% of Black Americans report feeling very confident about their financial literacy — only compounds the problem.

Nebraska is faring better than other states on the issue, recently rated as the most financially literate state in the country by Credit Secrets. Brittany Planos, financial literacy program manager for Union Bank and Trust’s Community Outreach/Marketing Department, said a combination of state law and corporate initiatives in the banking community are contributing to the ranking.

“There are so many exciting initiatives surrounding financial literacy in Nebraska,” she said. “As a starting point, Nebraska’s Financial Literacy Act went into effect in 2021. The Nebraska Revised Statute outlines the requirements for instruction in financial literacy with a goal to improve students’ personal finance skills including budgeting, building credit, and managing risk. The act requires each Nebraska student to complete high school coursework in personal finance or financial literacy prior to graduation and first applied to the class of 2024.

“UBT has a dedicated financial literacy program which provides free-of-charge

financial education classes and workshops for nonprofits, educational organizations and those they serve in the community. Through this program, UBT has partnered with more than 40 organizations and has reached over 1,200 community members.”

Planos said one of the unique factors of the UBT program is that it was built to be malleable to a wide range of audiences.

“UBT develops customized financial learning experiences in-house that are uniquely created for each group,” she said. “Workshops incorporate locality and real-life examples and are offered either in person or in a webinar format. Content includes ready-to-use tools and skills to enhance financial wellbeing.”

Individuals can also avail themselves of resources to help improve their financial understanding through the bank’s online suite of tools.

“UBT’s online Learning Center has a wealth of financial information, resources and calculators to help people make the most of their money,” she said. “UBT additionally offers a financial education series, The Five Principles of Financial Wellness, straight to a learner’s inbox. The self-paced educational series is designed to meet people where they are in their financial wellness journeys and covers everything from debt management to the importance of establishing a will.”

Takes one to know one

The availability of educational resources — be they offered by a bank or as part of a high school or college curriculum — is a helpful first step many women can take on the road to financial independence. This is especially true in today’s financial services market where it is much easier to find relatable advisers attuned to the unique factors women face in financial planning than used to be.

“One change we have seen in our business is that more women are becoming financial advisors to help address the needs of their female clients,” said Erin Murnan, financial advisor with RBC Wealth Management. “There are different considerations when looking at financial planning for women than there are for men. Women typically live five to seven years longer than men, so there needs to be additional planning for their longevity.

“We also tend to do more long-term care planning since women are more

likely to need assisted living later in life. Women also tend to earn less than men, yet because they live longer, planning strategies and maximizing social security benefits are also important to consider.”

As more and more women begin to take hold of their financial futures and take an active, even leading role in long-term planning, some high-level patterns are starting to emerge, Murnan said.

“Women tend to be more conservative investors than men and because of their discipline and long-term investment objectives, they possibly can outperform men,” she said. “Women also are concerned with long-term financial security and stability and invest in diversified portfolios with lower risk.

“Because women sometimes lack confidence in their financial abilities, they tend to ask more questions and are more likely to hire a financial advisor to assist them. Our team at RBC Wealth Management works to create a space where women can feel comfortable asking questions and learning more about managing their financial future.”

Individual needs and preferences have also presented themselves by generation.

“Older female clients are typically more conservative and are concerned with financial security. Many have relied on their spouses over the years to handle the finances,” Murnan said. “In our younger clientele, we see women taking on more of a team approach to finances with their partners. They are more financially savvy with their money, and they are comfortable using technology to monitor their investments. They tend to be more risk-tolerant because they understand they have the time to weather potential market swings.

Looking ahead, Murnan predicted women overall will come to represent a substantial segment of the financial planning market between advancements in the workplace, the transfer of wealth from parents and in surviving their spouses.

“As wealth transfers across generations, women have had to take a more active role in inheriting, managing and transferring wealth,” she said. “As more women are taking on executive roles, they are also starting to manage more of their wealth and making decisions about their investments and retirement planning. Each generation of women has started taking a more active role in their financial decisions.”

NATIONAL AG week

Nebraska Agriculture Celebrates National Ag Week

Agriculture is Nebraska’s No. 1 industry. It sustains our families, strengthens rural communities and ensures a strong future for generations to come.

National Ag Week, March 16 to 22, is a special time of year for Nebraska agriculture. It’s the perfect time to highlight and celebrate an industry that people depend on every day, and one that’s near and dear to my heart.

Whether it’s the food we eat, the fuel we use for our vehicles or the plentiful feed for livestock, everything about Nebraska agriculture is amazing. Our state has abundant resources including rich soil, ample water and wide-open land for grazing and for growing crops. These resources, combined with the skill, resilience and innovation of Nebraska producers, make our agriculture sector second to none.

Nebraska’s production leadership

Last year, Nebraska beef and veal exports reached a milestone, surpassing the $2 billion mark, making Nebraska No. 1 in the nation for beef and veal exports. High-quality beef from Nebraska is in demand all over the world and our ranchers continue to set the standard for excellence in the beef industry.

Beyond beef, Nebraska also plays a major role in pork production. Ranking sixth nationally with 3.65 million head of hogs and pigs, our state continues to be a key contributor to the U.S. and world pork supply.

Our state’s varied climate, elevation and rich soil help farmers grow a wide variety of crops that support our livestock industry, biofuels sector and global food supply. Our top rankings in crop production showcase our agricultural strength.

In 2024, we ranked:

No. 2 in the nation for proso millet production and alfalfa hay production

No. 3 for corn for grain production and all hay production

No. 4 in the nation for sorghum production, all dry edible bean production and dry edible

pea production

No. 5 for soybean production and sugarbeet production.

These rankings demonstrate Nebraska’s ability to not only produce high-quality food and feed but also contribute to the growing demand for biofuels and sustainable agricultural solutions.

We recognize the importance biofuels and the biotech industry play in the future of agricultural production, energy independence and our economy. Nebraska is uniquely positioned to lead in this industry as we already have the infrastructure in place and the resources we need to excel. For example, our state is home to 24 ethanol plants with a combined production capacity exceeding 2.3 billion gallons annually, making us the secondlargest ethanol producer in the nation.

Whether it’s growing, biomanufacturing or producing biofuels, Nebraska is ready to take the lead. Our products are premium quality, our production is sustainable and our producers are tech savvy.

Nebraska farmers, ranchers and agribusinesses are true innovators, embracing precision agriculture, genetic advances and modern equipment to produce more while using fewer resources. Their innovations impact all of us and emphasize the interconnectedness of agriculture with our daily lives.

Supporting Nebraska agriculture

The future of Nebraska agriculture depends on our continued support and investment in this vital industry. By advocating for policies that strengthen rural communities, supporting agricultural education programs and promoting Nebraska-grown products, we can ensure that our agriculture sector remains strong for generations to come.

As we shine a spotlight on Nebraska agriculture during National Ag Week and always, let me say “Thank you” to the farmers, ranchers and all who work in the ag industry for providing us with the food, feed and fuel we depend on daily. Your contributions make a difference not only in our state but across the nation and the world. Thank you also to Nebraskans everywhere for supporting Nebraska farmers, ranchers and agribusinesses every day.

At the Nebraska Department of Agriculture, we are proud to serve and support you. nda.nebraska.gov 402-471-2341

Officials Laud Agriculture During National Observance

GREATER OMAHA CHAMBER AND KEY PARTNERS CITE ECONOMIC IMPACT

The Greater Omaha Chamber hosted a news conference, partnering with the Nebraska Farm Bureau, Conagra Brands and the Nebraska Department of Agriculture, to emphasize the crucial role agriculture plays in the state’s economy. The event showcased ag and agribusinesses’ impact on Nebraska’s growth and sustainability, coinciding with National Agriculture Day observed March 18.

According to economic data, Nebraska’s agricultural sector supports more than 244,000 jobs statewide and contributes $97.4 billion in sales output. The industry also generates over $6 billion in tax revenue, further cementing agriculture as a vital economic driver for the state.

“Nebraska’s agricultural industry continues to be a cornerstone of our economy, providing jobs, economic growth and tax revenue for our communities,” said Mark McHargue, president of the Nebraska Farm Bureau Foundation board of directors. “From small family farms to large agri-businesses, agriculture is integral to every corner of our state.”

Agriculture is responsible for more than 40% of jobs in 54 of Nebraska’s 93 counties, reflecting its far-reaching influence, according to information provided by the Greater Omaha Chamber. Douglas County stands out as a major contributor, adding $3.9 billion in value to the local economy, more than $1 billion more than the next leading county. Lancaster County contributes $1.4 billion.

Douglas County also leads the state with over 29,000 agriculture-related jobs, solidifying its role as Nebraska’s agricultural hub.

“Douglas County’s leadership in agricultural value and job creation highlights the sector’s impact not only in rural areas but also in urban centers,” said David Bracht, president of the Agriculture Council for the Greater Omaha Chamber. “Agriculture offers vast opportunities for Nebraskans, from production and processing to world-leading innovation.”

Agriculture is Nebraska’s driving industry, impacting communities of every size and throughout the state’s rural reaches from food production to products used in manufacturing

to a range of white collar positions. Once again, Omaha is a hub for such agribusiness, creating career opportunities across the agriculture sector.

“Omaha innovators have created a city where you can dig in the dirt or dive into data,” said Sherry Vinton, director of Nebraska Department of Agriculture. “Whether a gearhead, number cruncher, sustainability dreamer or a content creator, Nebraska agriculture has a place for you.”

National Ag Day was founded by the Agriculture Council of America in 1973 and the first national observance was celebrated by the ACA in 1979. The event is intended to remind Americans of the critical role the farm plays in producing food, fiber and the biomaterials used in hundreds of products, the economic impact of same and to promote careers in agriculture to keep the sector strong.

“Think about everything you’ve done today — the food you ate, the clothes you wore and the fuel you used to get around — all are made possible by agriculture,” McHargue said. “The Nebraska Farm Bureau Foundation is dedicated to raising awareness of agriculture’s vital role in both rural communities and urban areas across the state. Agriculture is part of our everyday lives. It starts on the farm and ranch.”

SHANNON MISCHELL BINGHAM

BORN: DECEMBER 1977

RAISED: LENOX, IOWA

EDUCATED: XENON ACADEMY, COSMETOLOGY

Fabulous 50 profiles a new interesting person in the community every week. The feature series is part of Midlands Business Journal’s yearlong celebration of its 50th year in operation.

Keeping the Faith

SHANNON BINGHAM BUILT A THRIVING BUSINESS IN SEVEN SALON & BOUTIQUE BUT ENTREPRENEURSHIP IS ONLY PART OF HER STORY

The only things Shannon Bingham hasn’t accomplished in life are those she hasn’t yet thought of. Everything else – from entrepreneurship and parenting to pageant wins, community service and promoting the cause of adoption –has bent to the considerable will of the feisty farmgirl from Lenox, Iowa.

Landing in Omaha in 1996 to enter the beauty industry, she launched Seven Salon, now Seven Salon & Boutique, with Nikki Haney in 2004. Over the past 21 years, both her reputation and the company would grow substantially. For the salon that meant employing 30; for its co-founder it meant becoming a successful cosmetologist styling hair for private clients and commercial fashion events.

Early work

The grit and hustle it took to achieve all that has been part of an adventure that started early in life.

“I come from a small town where you just do hard work and you make stuff happen, you know?” she said. “My mom was a stay-at-home mom and my dad owned his own business. I had my own bean-walking crew by the time I was 16 and I’m sure that’s where that came from.”

Bingham left Lenox right after high school to start her journey in cosmetology and it wasn’t long before her natural talent, creativity and drive had her running in top circles of the industry.

“I worked at a couple different salons,” she said. “One was very large and was the place to work at back then and the other one was smaller, with like five stations. I got to see both ends. I knew I wanted to be in a salon that really elevated stylists and really elevated the industry and yet also had enough people that we could make a difference in the community as well.”

By 26, Bingham was a big deal in her industry, but when she and Haney finally decided to strike out on their own, they were seen as little more than two chicks who wanted a loan instead of serious entrepreneurs.

“I remember sitting in a bank and a couple of gentlemen looking at us like, ‘OK, you wanna start a beauty salon?’” she said. “My business partner and I sitting there going, yep, and they were like, ‘Well, you’re going to need a business plan.’ We handed them the business plan. I mean, we came in very prepared, but I feel like we weren’t taken very seriously up front.”

The duo didn’t come away with any cash, but the dismissive bankers did provide them with ample motivation to succeed and prove them wrong. Bingham and Haney each scraped up half of startup costs and Seven Salon was born.

“They wouldn’t take a risk on us so we took a risk on us and we did it anyway,” Bingham said. “We both put the money in and put it in the bank and that’s how we got Seven going.”

In its first year, the business would be named one of Salon Today magazine’s Top 200 Fastest Growing Salons in the United States, an accomplishment built largely on word of mouth and visibility in the community.

There she is

She carried this multiplier mentality into the world of pageants where she not only enjoyed the competition — she won Mrs. Nebraska International in 2023 and Mrs. Midwest International in 2024 — but also the platform it gave for her to promote Adoption as an Option, a cause very close to her heart.

FIVE FASCINATING FACTS

PROUDEST ACCOMPLISHMENT:

BECOMING A MOM AND BUILDING A BUSINESS.

“I’m an adoptive mother, I adopted my son in 2007, and I wanted to give back,” she said. “Over the years, I’ve really keyed in on advocating for the Nebraska Children’s Home Society and the adoption community in general. I can tell you I have learned so much becoming an advocate. It has been such a delight to be able to hear the stories and understand the perspective of not only the adoptive parents, but the adoptees.”

THE FAVORITE AMONG MY TATTOOS:

ONE OF MY SMALLEST TATTOOS ON MY LEFT WRIST THAT I HAND WROTE IS THE WORD “INSPIRED.” IT REMINDS ME TO ALWAYS GIVE BACK.

FAVORITE GUILTY PLEASURE:   CADBURY EGGS.

HIDDEN TALENT NOT MANY PEOPLE KNOW ABOUT ME:

I WAS AN AWARD-WINNING TRUMPET PLAYER.

MY BEST BEAUTY ADVICE:

COMPARISON IS THE THIEF OF JOY. YOU ARE UNIQUELY AND DIVINELY CREATED TO BE DIFFERENT AND BEAUTIFUL IN YOUR OWN WAY! AND USE SUNSCREEN.

“It was a very different time back then. Social media wasn’t what it is today. Facebook was born a couple weeks after we were,” Bingham said. “I think the first five years of any business, it’s really about setting your culture and we really focused on the culture we wanted in there for clients and for employees.”

Despite the fast start, Salon Seven wasn’t without challenges, notably COVID, which shut down salons entirely and led the company’s diversification into boutique items to survive. Bingham became a master of leveraging one passion to benefit another. Supporting worthwhile causes in the community was not only the right thing to do but had an ancillary benefit of boosting the salon’s name recognition.

The many joys and challenges of family life — Bingham birthed two children since adopting her son, now a teenager — work and pageants has fulfilled her in ways previous unimaginable. Above all, these elements coalesced to affirm something in her that many struggle with, an acceptance of her authentic self.

“Over time I learned a lot of lessons about myself,” she said. “I’m not your perfect, you know, ultimate pageant girl. I’m covered in tattoos, and I have battle scars from the things in life that you learn from. Being in business you find out what you’re made of real quick, too. My advice to anyone else is keep the faith. If you feel like something’s your mission in life the doors will open and once they do, you have to keep the faith because there’s times where that ship is sinking and you’re feeling like, how am I supposed to continue? Really, it’s just stretching you to be able to handle more and more things.

“Nikki and I didn’t accept no. I’ve never accepted no. For me it’s never no, it’s not yet and if it’s not meant for you, it will fall off and it won’t even matter that there was a no. But if it’s your mission, the doors will open and things will align.”

Getting Government “Fit”

We can’t think of many companies that haven’t gone through some type of restructuring. While messy, they’re necessary and promote corporate longevity. A restructuring is an admission that an entity isn’t running at top performance. Perhaps management invested too much in a part of their business, acquired an underperforming asset or a new venture didn’t pan out. There have been many restructurings since the pandemic due to the wild demand shifts from offline to online and then back. However, this largely occurred in the private sector. Now it’s the government’s time to “get fit” because it was on an unsustainable path. According to Bank of America, the U.S. has never been so dependent upon government spending. Its research showed that the government accounted for 85% of job growth and 33% of all spending in 2024. For a market-based economy, this isn’t healthy. Public approval of how this is being done probably depends on what side of the aisle you sit but we haven’t met many that believe government is run efficiently.

Many firms in the private sector have restructured. The Fed restructured through raising interest rates and ending “quantitative easing”. Now it’s the U.S. government’s turn and it should be a good thing despite the market’s uneasiness. Restructurings can lay the groundwork for prosperous turnarounds.

Much of the market’s recent volatility is gauging how much of an impact will result from a government restructuring. While public sector jobs account for a small amount of U.S. employment, there are many private sector jobs created from federal spending. This is feeding fears of an economic slowdown, especially considering how dependent our economy has become on government.

At HFS, we’ve seen our fair share of private sector restructurings. This one doesn’t feel much different. First, there is the initial shock of the announcement and the size of change. Many investors recognize that it is positive long term, but some will quickly sell their shares either because their thesis was proven wrong or they want to move onto more stable situations.

This is what we see happening in the current environment. The S&P 500 has sold off quickly, posting the 5th fastest drop of 10% since 1950. Heightened uncertainty has caused many traders to move their funds to other places such as China and Europe. Basically, it seems that whatever wasn’t working since the election is now the “hot” trade. Don’t be fooled. We intentionally chose the word “trade” versus “investment”. Broken clocks are right twice a day.

Despite all the noise and fearmongering, there is a lot of good happening under the surface. It’s easy to get overwhelmed as it feels everything is happening all at once. Our favorable views of the U.S. market and artificial intelligence has only strengthened. The only thing that has changed is that the price of entry has gotten cheaper.

Bio:

An early interest in design led Erin Svoboda to the interior design industry where she has worked on dozens of residential and commercial projects over the last 20 years. She recently became the director of strategic partnerships for Omaha-based Darland Construction. Her mix of marketing, business management, and design experience helps her solidify relationships with the company’s education and health care clients.

You’ve been in the construction industry for over 20 years. What originally sparked your interest in the industry?

I have always been inspired by design, architecture and construction. At a young age, I would sketch floor

plans and elevations of my future home. I have been intrigued by the process and how all the pieces come together from the initial concept to the final product.

What is one initiative or project you worked on that you’re particularly proud of?

There isn’t a single project that stands out because I have been a part of many, from residential to commercial. It is always fun to drive around town, see a project and know I had a hand in the process.

If you could give your younger self one piece of advice, what would it be and why?

Set goals, never give up and don’t be afraid to fail. Failure is redirection.

Why is volunteering important to you and how has it impacted your life?

Volunteering has always been important to me, to work toward the greater good of an organization and help those impacted, whether it’s planning the next event or raising money for scholarships. The people I have met through volunteering have inspired me in many ways and become lifelong friends.

A friend or family member is coming to Omaha for the first time. Where do you take them to experience Omaha like a local?

Omaha has so many great places. I would go to an Omaha staple, M’s Pub, for a dirty martini and to experience the downtown atmosphere.

Margie Heller

MARGIE HELLER JOINS

FIRST WESTROADS BANK BOARD OF DIRECTORS

First Westroads Bank is pleased to announce that Margie Heller, the bank’s Chief Financial Officer, has joined its Board of Directors. With over 40 years of banking experience and a proven track record of financial leadership, Heller’s appointment further strengthens the bank’s commitment to delivering exceptional service to its customers and stakeholders.

“I’m thrilled to join the Board of Directors and be part of a bank that truly values its community focus and strong client relationships,” Heller said. “I’ll continue to deeply appreciate the opportunity to engage directly with customers and contribute to a more personal, hands-on banking experience — something that sets this organization apart from larger, traditional institutions. With a talented management team and exceptional bankers, I’m confident we’re positioned for steady growth in 2025 and beyond.”

Heller’s appointment follows a hugely successful 2024 for First Westroads Bank, which saw the modernization of its banking technology to better serve its customers. The bank’s financial strength continues to be a cornerstone of its operations, reinforcing its dedication to innovation and exceptional service.

A Nebraska native, Heller grew up in Pilger and began her banking career at a small, rural bank near her hometown. She later moved to Omaha in 1986, where she built a distinguished career in financial leadership across multiple banks. Her expertise in accounting, mortgage lending and capital markets has earned her widespread respect in the banking industry. Over the past three decades, she has worked in community banking with a variety of institutions, drawn by her passion for numbers and building trust with customers. At First Westroads Bank, she values the bank’s close-knit relationships with its clients and is committed to breaking the perception of “banker’s hours” by prioritizing customer needs.

Beyond her professional achievements, Heller is deeply involved in her community. She currently chairs the board for Community Alliance Rehab Services and has previously served on boards for the Special Olympics, Visiting Nurse Association and Joslyn Castle. As an advocate for education, she has been a school board member, an adjunct professor at Metropolitan Community College and actively supports interview preparation at the University of Nebraska at Omaha.
