Let Them Eat Soup ANNUAL EVENT SUPPORTS VNA SHELTER NURSING PROGRAM

The annual Art & Soup fundraiser of the Visiting Nurse Association was held March 9 at the Omaha Design Center. The event brought together a mix of art genres and unique soups prepared by some of Omaha and Council Bluffs’ best chefs.

Funds raised went to support VNA’s Shelter Nursing services through which VNA nurses provide public health nursing services to more than 1,700 individuals and families in local group maternity homes, domestic violence shelters and homeless shelters.

Services provided by VNA nurses help individuals on their journey to independent living. Those services include health screenings and assessments;

treatments of illnesses and injuries; preventative health care; education on positive coping skills; chronic disease monitoring and nutritional assessments. They also provide prenatal and childbirth education; breastfeeding support; postpartum and infant assessments and positive parenting education.

VNA’s Honorary Chair for Art & Soup 2025 was Randy Goodwin, actor and CEO of Fallen Giant Films. Known for roles in Vampire Diaries, Dynasty and Grey’s Anatomy, the Omaha native has come home to Nebraska where he supports the state’s film industry and promotes the production of wholesome entertainment.

TOP 5 THINGS TO KNOW

Report: Despite brain drain, Nebraska keeps growing Nebraska still suffers from outmigration risk among college graduates and higher earners, but overall the population news is good from the 2024 Data and Research Series for Community Impact, a report of the University of Nebraska Omaha Center for Public Affairs Research.

Despite the problematic nature of the state’s brain drain, the state’s population has grown driven primarily by natural increase and international residents. The growth came in 24 counties, pushing the population needle to 1.96 million statewide, an increase of 7.4% between 2010 and 2020. Recent growth has been decidedly more modest, just 0.8%, from 2020 to 2023.

Growth was largely clustered in the state’s metro counties to the east including Sarpy County at 20% and Douglas and Lancaster counties at 13% each. Cass (5.4%) and Saunders (7.2%) benefited from their urban neighbors’ growing headcount. Three outlying counties in central Nebraska increased numbers: Buffalo, up 8.6%; Hall, up 7.3% and Platte, up 6.4%.

Secretary of State calls for better voter verification

Nebraska Secretary of State Bob Evnen joined 20 other secretaries of state to formally request the U.S. Department of Homeland Security prioritize making improvements to the Systematic Alien Verification for Entitlements program. The SAVE program allows secretaries of state to assure only U.S. citizens are registered to vote.

In a letter sent Feb. 27, the secretaries outlined five proposed improvements to enhance accuracy and efficiency of the verification process. Suggested improvements included allowing batch verification of citizenship, eliminating state cost for utilizing the program, clarifying guidance on authorized use and increasing the available information stored within the SAVE system.

“The goal is to ensure that only ballots cast by those who are authorized to vote in our elections are counted,” said Secretary Evnen in a release. “With these improvements, the SAVE program would be a critical tool used to confirm the citizenship status of those who are registered to vote in Nebraska.”

Proposed development targets unique site

Lite Development plans to develop a unique site into multifamily residential. Grow Omaha reported March 5 that the site is currently home to landmark grain silos located between the I-480 interchange and the 42nd Street exit.

Plans for the 4.88-acre site, located on the north side of Interstate 80 near 35th Street, call for eight townhomes along 34th Street on the east side of the lot and a 144-unit apartment building on the southwest corner of 24th and Vinton. Some of the silos will be partially demolished and then reused with two additional apartment buildings of 54 units and 27 units, respectively, and a swimming pool built on top, per project drawings.

In addition, the complex will provide 244 off-street parking stalls, including surface parking and garage spaces. An additional 38 spaces will be on-street adjacent to the project.

The Omaha Planning Board is reviewing an amendment to the city’s master plan to change the zoning from industrial to high-density residential, a preliminary plat and a planned unit redevelopment overlay district, Grow Omaha reported.

Sarpy strategic plan wins award

The Western Sarpy Transportation Enhancement Plan was recognized with the Planning Excellence Award by the American Planning Association Nebraska Chapter at its annual conference March 6.

The plan was cited for its innovative, proactive approach to planning future transportation networks and development by setting uniform design standards across local communities.

WE-STEP was developed in collaboration with the City of Gretna, City of Papillion, City of Springfield, Sarpy County and the Metropolitan Area Planning Agency. It provides a framework for communities by which to develop for future generations through proactive, flexible standards.

MAPA awarded the City of Gretna a Heartland 2050 Mini-Grant for WE-STEP. The Heartland 2050 Mini-Grant program is a set-aside portion of federal transportation funding earmarked for projects which advance the Heartland 2050 Regional Vision. The cities of Gretna, Papillion and Springfield and Sarpy County also contributed funding.

New bill would change state’s craft beer, spirits landscape

Nebraska lawmakers have advanced a bill that would change how craft brewers and distillers in the state can get their product in the public’s hands. LB 113 would allow such businesses to self-distribute their products without going through a distributor.

Proponents say the bill would help brewers and distillers grow by enabling them to get beer or spirits directly to retailers, bars and restaurants themselves, thereby saving on distribution costs.

The proposed legislation, introduced by Sen. Dan Quick (Dist. 35), allows licensed premises to directly sell for resale up to 5,000 gallons per calendar year of its own products directly to retail licensees located in Nebraska. It also seeks to amend licensing to increase the number of locations a brewery or distillery can operate in the state, from five to 10 locations.

COVER story Own Your Value

ICAN WOMEN’S LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE PROMOTES EMBRACING YOUR IMPORTANCE

The idea of gender equity and advancing women in the workplace is an ongoing focus for the conference. It gets threaded year over year in new ways. Because it continues to be a need, it continues to be of interest to our partners and our attendees.

Gender equity is a top priority for many women leaders in the workplace, and the Institute for Career Advancement Needs (ICAN) has made that its mission since 1981. Marking the 32nd year of its ICAN Women’s Leadership Conference, this year’s theme, “Own Your Value,” asks attendees to take stock of what they can control and contribute: their own unique impact.

The full-day hybrid conference takes place April 16, 2025, in person at CHI Health Center and virtually through the organization’s custom virtual platform.

“The conference will be discussing the barriers that exist for many women in their leadership journey like pay equity, imposter syndrome and the confidence gap, offering tools and resources to overcome them,” said Aileen Warren, president and CEO of ICAN.

“This is our 32nd annual conference, which is pretty amazing when you think about it in terms of its longevity. It is a day that is dedicated to leadership development, to networking, to growth. There are a lot of engagement opportunities. You get to hear some wonderful speakers. I just feel from a leadership development standpoint, it has really had an impact on the leadership landscape in Omaha.”

Warren noted a need to help women identify and better communicate the value they bring to work as a means of maximizing their career opportunities.

When planning the event, the ICAN team places heavy consideration on trends affecting women as well as feedback from previous conference attendees. Leaning into attendee requests for more networking opportunities, a networking lounge will be available in the exhibit hall. Additionally, popular speaker Julie Brown will again present this year on the main stage and host a breakout session entitled “Networking Your Way to Success.’

Perennial topics remain present in the conference and are included through the mainstage speakers and breakout sessions, Warren noted.

“Obviously, the idea of gender equity and advancing women in the

workplace is an ongoing focus for the conference,” she said. “It gets threaded year over year in new ways. Because it continues to be a need, it continues to be of interest to our partners and our attendees.”

The financial power of women, a continuation of last year’s conference theme, is also incorporated.

Community impact

While the ICAN Women’s Leadership Conference attracts attendees from far and wide with its virtual component, the event is also buoyed by community connections. From the conference bookstore by The Bookworm, which gives the opportunity to interact with authors, to the exhibitor area featuring small businesses, the conference engages the Omaha community throughout the event.

A mainstage panel with Omaha-based CEOs will also infuse a local touch. Javier Fernandez, president and CEO of OPPD, and Denise McCauley, chair/president and CEO/national director of WoodmenLife, will have a conversation about workplace transparency.

“We’re going to talk about workplace transparency, whether it’s a land mine or gold mine, which primarily revolves around trust and the evolution of information companies are willing to share with their employees,” Warren said.

The ICAN Leadership Award, its 10th annual, will be announced and presented in partnership with Kiewit Corp. on the main stage. The award recognizes an individual selected from community nominations who demonstrates “collaboration, compassion, confidence and creativity.” Previous recipients have included Chanda Chacón, president and CEO of Children’s Nebraska; Racquel Henderson, pathway coordinator with Metropolitan Community College; and Julie Kaminski, SVP and COO with Immanuel.

Another leader recognition opportunity is the continuation of the ICAN Honor a Leader campaign.

People really utilize this conference opportunity for a day to step away and focus intentionally on themselves in an inspiring setting of fellow leaders.

“This is an opportunity that we open up for people in the community to honor a leader in their life with a donation to ICAN of $30 or more,” Warren said.

The list of 2025 honored leaders are notified of the special recognition by the donor and will be featured both at the conference and year-round on the ICAN website. The ICAN Honor a Leader opportunity will be open until March 21.

Personalized experience

“One of the special things about this conference and the impact it has is the power and energy that is just so palpable when our attendees come in the room, and there are almost 3,000 women there for this big day,” said Allison Zach, director of marketing, communications and events with ICAN. “People really utilize this conference opportunity for a day to step away and focus intentionally on themselves in an inspiring setting of fellow leaders.”

Attendees are encouraged to understand and embrace their value and communicate it as a positive influence on others. With that comes the business side of one’s own interactions.

“[Owning your own value] is really gaining some of that confidence and purpose to understand your strengths, develop your expertise and really hone your leadership craft,” Warren said.

Beyond the conference

While many attendees will leave on a high from the day, maintaining that motivation and retaining the information learned can be difficult. ICAN has taken notice and developed post-conference tools. With on-demand access to video recordings, both those who attended in-person and virtually can watch breakout sessions they were unable to attend and re-watch their favorite main stage keynotes for enhanced learning and retention.

A digital “Continuing the Conversation” toolkit also is provided offering engagement topics and additional resources from the speakers. The aim is

to encourage conversations within organizations that have sent teams to the conference.

“One of the core things that ICAN delivers is a really transformative experience that companies in our region can use to invest in their people to develop their next generation of leaders and high potential talent,” Zach said.

“This conference serves leaders at multiple leadership levels but I think the biggest thing is that our event has a very strong delivery of impact on the individual leader that we see transfers to a true return on investment for our community partners that support the conference.”

Additional learning opportunities are also available through ICAN programming to build on what the conference covers. Regarding feedback from companies who have either become conference partners or sent a team to represent the company, Zach said many of them utilize the experience as a tool for internal development and team building for their employees across departments or office locations. In fact, some have developed waitlists for those who want to attend the conference.

“It’s an empowering day for these employees to come together and have that shared learning experience,” she said. “I think that’s been really cool to see some of those moments. People are making connections with their colleagues that they don’t usually get to foster.”

Conference registration is open, closing on April 1, 2025, for in-person and April 11, 2025 for virtual tickets. Visit https:// icanconference.com/ for more information.

ICAN KEYNOTE SPEAKERS ARE SURE TO INSPIRE GREATER WEALTH, PROFESSIONAL STRENGTH

One of the hallmarks of ICAN through the years has been its slate of inspiring, dynamic keynote speakers and 2025 will be no exception. The conference features a diverse collection of voices who are sure to inspire attendees to become their very best.

“Each year we craft a theme around what’s going on in the world for women and business,” said Lisa Kaplan, conference development with ICAN. “We come up with a unique theme and branding direction for the year, then based upon that, we select our speakers that can each speak to a thread of that theme.

“Our theme this year, ‘Own Your Value,’ takes a look at the things that are within a woman’s control in her leadership trajectory and how she can embrace her unique value to exert greater influence within her organization and the world.”

This year’s lineup includes:

Jean Chatzky

Keynote: “Women With Money”

Jean Chatzky’s engaging talk on women and money comes at a time when polls show 93 percent of women are stressed about their finances. Chatzky is the founder and CEO of HerMoney.com and the coaching programs FinanceFixx and InvestingFixx. She also hosts the podcast “HerMoney with Jean Chatzky” and appears on “Opportunity Knock$” on PBS.

“Women like to know the answers to the questions before we even ask them,” she said. “That makes the world of investing — where perfect answers aren’t possible — daunting. The key is embracing the fact we know enough to get started and it’s OK to learn along the way.”

A columnist for AARP The Magazine and an education fellow for The Alliance for Lifetime Income, Chatzky was the financial editor for NBC Today for 25 years. Her latest books are “Women with Money: The Judgment-Free Guide to Creating the Joyful, Less Stressed, Purposeful (and Yes, Rich) Life You Deserve” and “How To Money,” a guidebook for Gen Z women.

Maggie McGrath Editor, ForbesWomen

Keynote:

“Luck or Ability: Reducing Gender Bias in the Workplace”

Maggie McGrath is a multimedia journalist who tells stories in print, online, on camera and through live events. The editor of ForbesWomen, she covers all angles of female entrepreneurship. She has also appeared across Forbes’ video platforms and in Know Your Value segments for MSNBC’s “Morning Joe.” In 2024, she officially took that on-camera work and became an anchor for ForbesTV, Forbes’ breaking news video platform. Her talk will address the concept of achievement and corporate success on the strength of two of the most coveted assets any woman can have — skill and luck — and what’s within the control of women leaders to take back the narrative for themselves and the women around them.

“It’s important to remember that luck and skill are not mutually exclusive,” she said. “Oftentimes, the most successful people among us have benefited from both. Acknowledging this duality can help even the playing field for workers of all genders.”

Casey Brown Speaker, author

Keynote:

“Your Value: Determine it, Communicate It and Get Paid for It”

Arming audiences with practical, ready-to-implement steps to negotiate fearlessly, price confidently and make more money, Casey Brown is on a mission to educate audiences to claim their worth.

“According to a March 2024 report by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, women earn just 83 cents for every dollar earned by men,” she said. “Not because we aren’t equally capable [or] we don’t deliver results, but at least in part because we haven’t always defined our value and confidently communicated it. I will launch the women in the ICAN audience onto a path to command the salaries they deserve.”

As founder of Boost Pricing, Brown leads a team of experts who help companies discover their true pricing power, resulting in more than 1,000 companies generating over $1 billion in incremental profits. Known for pioneering innovative pricing content, Brown is fluent in Spanish, is a certified Six Sigma Black Belt, a holder of three degrees and a volunteer with over 600 hours annually around the world.

Heather R. Younger Leadership consultant, speaker, author

Keynote:

A contributor to Forbes, Fast Company, Bloomberg, NBC and ABC, Heather R. Younger is a leading expert on Caring Leadership® and active listening. The founder and CEO of Employee Fanatix, catering to Fortune 100 companies, she will introduce the audience to leadership concepts detailed in her new book, “The Art of Self-Leadership.”

Over a 25-year career, Younger has worked in customer experience, sales and large-account management for multi-million-dollar accounts in tech, staffing, health care, professional services, the public sector and the financial sector. She has personally read over 30,000 employee surveys and facilitated over 100 employee focus groups.

A renowned keynote speaker, she is a LinkedIn Learning course partner, TEDx speaker and host of the popular “Leadership With Heart” podcast.

LEADERS RELAY HOW THEY IMPLEMENT INSIGHTS GAINED AT ICAN

TRISHA BERRY

TALENT DEVELOPMENT

SENIOR SPECIALIST, OLSSON

LEAH BOND

TALENT AND DEVELOPMENT LEADER, BLUE CROSS AND BLUE SHIELD OF NEBRASKA

Every year, thousands of leaders at various stages of their career descend on the ICAN Women’s Leadership Conference for insights and inspiration for improving their skill set. Throughout the conference, many are inspired by the dynamic speakers, insightful breakout sessions and one-on-one idea sharing gained through networking with other rising stars from the business community.

The question remains: how can attendees act upon what they’ve learned from their ICAN experience to enhance their companies by driving meaningful change in the workplace year-round?

Bringing ICAN to work

Trisha Berry, talent development senior specialist with Olsson and member of the ICAN board of directors, said her company has a formalized way to identify and invest in highpotential leaders, a process enhanced by ICAN materials and resources outside of just the conference day.

“It is the goal to provide emerging leaders with growth opportunities, whether internal or external to the organization,” she said. “Internally, Olsson has programs to serve populations new to the firm, rising professionals, project managers, supervisors and emerging leaders, to name a few.

“Externally, emerging leaders are encouraged to seek out meaningful programs in which to participate. We also have a robust internal mentoring program where everyone is encouraged to participate.”

Berry said attending the annual ICAN conference is one excellent external resource for those on their developmental journey.

“Improving efforts to develop, retain and advance young leaders can only be supported by the solid programming from ICAN,” she said. “The conference boasts a wide range of talent and diversity of thought to stoke new ideas and spark action. An Olsson participant at the 2024 ICAN Women’s Conference reflected the following in gratitude, ‘It was one of my favorite days of work last year!’

“Knowing that ICAN energizes high performers at our organization speaks volumes and leaves us a fervent supporter.”

Enhancing the toolkit

Leah Bond, talent and development leader with Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Nebraska and member of the ICAN Women’s Leadership Conference Advocacy Committee, said leadership development there is ingrained in the company structure, providing employees with one-on-one learning with other workers. Again, these resources are often themselves augmented by the content of the annual ICAN event.

“Some employees want to learn about certain roles or other parts of the business and so working with a mentor might be their preferred path,” she said. “We have other employees that we encourage to take on a leadership role in one of our Employee Resource Groups. Some employees prefer to work with a coach to further explore areas for growth. We also have several external partnerships for leadership development opportunities.

JULIE BURRELL LILLIG

VICE

PRESIDENT OF STRATEGIC PARTNERSHIPS, ICAN

“The ICAN conference is one event that is extremely popular with our employees, and we leverage our partnership as a way to invest in our emerging leaders.”

Most of all, Bond said, ICAN is useful because it directly speaks to one of the company’s core values, making it easier for employees to bring what they’ve learned at the conference directly into the workplace.

“One of our core values is ‘Leadership and Ownership Perspective.’ We want all employees to see themselves as a leader and take ownership in helping to serve our members,” she said. “When we invest in developing our talent, we build a team that is extremely engaged and loyal. When employees are engaged and invested in their own development, they work hard to help the business thrive.

“The ICAN conference is a day filled with inspiration and empowerment. We make sure that our employees know that they were selected to attend because we see their value.”

More than just a conference

Julie Burrell Lillig, ICAN vice president of strategic partnerships, noted the organization goes out of its way to assist companies in helping the concepts from the conference take root back at attendees’ workplaces. She said the organization has launched several resources that act as a complement to that effort.

“Beyond this conference and the post-conference toolkit, we offer many ways to engage and develop leaders,” she said. “We offer immersive, cohort-based experiences, such as Defining Leadership and Two 3’s: What Leaders Need Now, that foster deep learning, collaboration, network building and authentic transformation.

“We also offer high-energy events like the ICAN 7x7x7 and the Virtual Learning Burst Series, which provide dynamic, shorter learning options to inspire leaders at any level and sharpen their skills.”

Individual coaching, sponsorship and mentorship are also stressed programmatically through the organization, Burrell Lillig said.

“Mentors are crucial in the business world,” she said. “A good mentor helps someone recognize their value and offers guidance when navigating challenges. A sponsor goes a step further by actively advocating for your promotions and opens doors to leadership opportunities. We all benefit when we have both.

“We also offer individual coaching, or you can partner with ICAN to develop a custom leadership experience or internal series for your team. Our goal is to provide experiences that cultivate leadership talents and give you and your organization a competitive advantage.”

Burrell Lillig said one of the most rewarding things about ICAN is watching past conference attendees or program graduates grow into leaders who then bring the next generation to the annual conference or programs. She said the multiplier effect of ICAN is therefore substantial.

“As attendees reflect on their experience at the ICAN Women’s Leadership Conference or our Defining Leadership program, we hope they’ve learned more about themselves, expanded their network and that they will make a big impact in their organization and our world,” she said.

FINANCE & TAX planning Set a Growth-Minded Tone

Few temporal milestones are quite as universally inspiring as the new year, which can present a powerful basis and foundation to turn over a new leaf when it comes to one’s personal finances.

Ryan Swartz, partner and managing director of Creative Planning, said the biggest opportunity for growing wealth is continuing a growthminded mindset that avoids shorts, like chasing returns, timing the market, and so on.

“The best way to create a consistent path to growing wealth is to invest early and often,” Swartz said. “Also, to remain disciplined to an investment strategy that is largely allocated to equity/stock assets versus fixed assets such as bonds.”

Of course, he continued, short-term and intermediate-term needs should be met by predictable sources.

“But continuing to save in a diversified way to a portfolio largely allocated to stocks can provide a great opportunity to grow wealth over many years,” Swartz added.

- KIMBERLY J. KROPP, OWNER AND PARTNER, MOYLAN KROPP

Conversely, the biggest challenge to growing wealth is balancing the savings strategy with spending or taking on too much debt.

“Over the past few years inflation has increased, and this has also driven many to spend at a higher rate than the increases in cash flow,” Swartz said. “Furthermore, when markets and inflation are higher there tends to be a movement toward more speculative assets such as cryptocurrencies, or concentrated risk in one or two particular stocks.”

Specific to changes in 2025, Swartz said nearly all of his clients are paying attention to the expiration of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017, which included significant changes to the tax code.

“It is important to have a financial plan that incorporates tax planning and estate planning with your advisor to revisit regularly, and make sure you have a strategy for any changes that may specifically relate to you,” he said.

Changes or escalating noise that should be tuned out include the premise that when the market hits an all-time high, it should be a source of alarm.

PARTNER AND MANAGING DIRECTOR, CREATIVE PLANNING

“In fact, market highs are a regular occurrence,” he explained. “As an example, the S&P 500 has had 57 alltime highs this most recent calendar year as of mid-December in 2024.”

Swartz said these highs occur in about one of every 19 trading days, with 2024 seeing far more new highs than normal.

“It is important to realize as a longterm investor that staying disciplined and remaining invested in your strategy that aligns with your goals provides the highest probability of outcomes over the long term,” he said. “This avoidance of ‘the noise’ is a key contributor to successful investors.”

Embrace technology

For Kimberly J. Kropp, partner and financial advisor with Moylan Kropp, opportunities for wealth-building are presented by the inclusion of a variety of sectors, not limited to artificial intelligence and technology.

“The greatest strength in the last five years has been domestic large companies,” Kropp said. “We should now be including mid- and small-size companies also.”

Inflation and overall debt remain perennial challenges.

“However, depending on your years remaining of growing wealth, you need to concentrate on the long term,” she stated. “What you purchase today, more than likely, will be worth more in five to 10 years. So, don’t try to time the market.”

Kropp indicated that individuals should be aware of dramatic technology changes in 2025 with implications for respective nest eggs.

“What took days for us to realize years ago, we know in a matter of minutes today,” she explained. “Always pay attention to the fact that the markets are emotional. Try to pay attention to taking the emotion out of the market. Instead concentrate on what you can control and when exactly you need to start drawing monies.”

She encouraged readers to avoid getting caught up in things that cannot be controlled. Instead focus on what you can save, what you spend, and where your risk tolerance is because the market will always go up and down.

“After being in this profession all these years, it boils down to when you need to pull the money,” she said.

Sustained path forward

John Gessert, executive vice president of private client services at Security National Bank, said the new year is a great time to create a financial plan or review an existing one as needs inevitably change with time.

“Your wealth management strategies should evolve with you for a secure present and future,” Gessert said. “During each financial planning review, our private client services team identifies growth opportunities for our clients.”

As an example, Gessert referred to how a review might prompt a client to consolidate overlapping investment accounts, deploy excess cash, revisit overall asset allocation, or implement more tax-efficient investment strategies.

“Make sure you invest enough time to review your financial and estate plans properly each year to confirm you are on the right track,” he said. “Even if you feel like you have a good plan, it never hurts to get a second opinion.”

This might include a spectrum of wealth management expertise – from private bankers to tax and legal experts.

investors’ attention going into 2025,” Gessert said. “The balancing act will be the Federal Reserve Board’s ability to manage interest rates, with a 2% annual inflation goal.”

When asked about changes or factors in 2025 to potentially drown out, he reinforced the firm’s consistent focus on long-term objectives for the best outcomes.

“Make sure your overall asset allocation reflects your long-term investment goals and is at the appropriate level of risk,” Gessert said. “Stock and bond performance may vary greatly from year to year. It is so important to have a good plan and stay invested over long periods of time to build wealth and meet your financial goals.”

Strategy surmounts policy

For Jacque Denson, partner and financial advisor with Vestia Personal Wealth Advisors, the key to growing wealth in 2025 is a thoughtful investment strategy that aligns with one’s goals.

“While the ‘Magnificent 7’ (the seven largest tech stocks) dominated U.S. markets in recent years contributing significantly to the S&P 500’s nearly 50%

growth since 2023, we may see broader market performance in 2025,” Denson said. “Analysts predict that other sectors — what some call the ‘other 493’ stocks in the S&P 500 — could experience stronger earnings growth this year.”

For investors heavily concentrated in the Magnificent 7, Denson sees this as an opportunity to diversify.

“By spreading investments across more sectors, you can potentially capture growth while also reducing risk, staying aligned with your financial plan,” she said.

This year in particular will be challenging, according to Denson, due to the market noise and economic uncertainty.

“It’s easy to get distracted by headlines or predictions about what might happen next, but reacting to every change in the economy can derail your progress,” she explained. “The key is to have a personalized financial plan — a ‘true north’ built around your unique goals. This plan helps you stay on track and measure success, even when markets fluctuate.”

Balancing diversification and cash management within the financial plan is worthy of one’s attention in 2025.

“Diversification helps reduce volatility by spreading risk across different areas, such as countries, company sizes, bond maturities, and even private and public investments,” she said. “This approach should help protect your nest egg from being overly tied to the performance of any one asset.”

She said that optimizing one’s cash management strategy is equally important.

“In today’s higher interest rate environment, I believe it’s wise to ensure that your emergency fund and savings for short-term goals are held in high-interest bearing accounts,” Denson noted. “This can allow your money to work harder while remaining liquid and accessible when you need it.”

She specifically isolated political noise as a factor to not get too caught up within 2025.

“History shows that markets have delivered strong results under both red and blue presidents,” Denson said. “While new policies and proposals may dominate

Banking Matters.

headlines, reacting emotionally to political developments often leads to poor investment decisions.”

Regardless of political changes or media narratives, a clear financial plan and consistent strategy tied to one’s personal goals can help to stay on track.

“Markets have weathered policy shifts, trade negotiations and global uncertainty before, and they should again,” Denson remarked. “Remember, some of the most successful investors stay focused on their long-term strategy rather than chasing the latest political headlines.”

Maintaining Perspective

We haven’t been intentionally avoiding the topic of tariffs. It’s just been hard to determine what’s going to stick and what sort of concessions will be given. Here’s what we know: After just making a new all-time high just three weeks ago, the S&P 500 has pulled back over 5% at the time of this writing. There have been all sorts of reasons given, much of which falls along political party lines. However, our read of this pullback is that it’s a mild growth scare, perhaps due in part to the meaningful change that the Trump administration is implementing. While much coverage has been given to how inflationary tariffs will be, the bond market is saying the exact opposite. Since midJanuary, yields on 10-year Treasury bonds have plunged from nearly 4.8% to under 4.3%. Meanwhile, the “nowcast” of the Atlanta Fed’s GDP tracker currently projects 1Q25 real GDP to fall over 2%, mostly due to a large surge of imports and a drop in exports as companies prepare for tariffs. Even Trump admitted that his policies could cause “a little disturbance.” A soft U.S. retail sales report in January coupled with some talk from Walmart and Target about softer consumer spend early in the year has some investors spooked.

Remember, much of this isn’t for the long-term investor.

Volatility is part of the game. It shakes out the weak hands and creates opportunities for the strong ones. As the chart above shows, the intrayear decline for the S&P 500 has averaged 14% since 1980 but has come out positive 75% of these years. We’ve seen too many intelligent investors prepare for such drawdowns over prolonged periods that they miss much of the upside. Even though countless studies show that no one can time the market, many inflated egos still try. As HFS has written before, historically, stocks go up. Moreover, we believe the longer that we endure such uncomfortable times, the better off we are. Why spend so much time preparing for the exception rather than the rule?

For us, this market action makes a lot of sense. Signs of economic

softness amidst meaningful change in government policy following two consecutive years of strong equity gains typically will cause pullbacks. They happen nearly every year. Moreover, it’s been orderly thus far. While this may last a bit longer and possibly become more pronounced, we believe it is temporary. HFS remains steadfast that there are a lot of positive things happening underneath the noise. Patience and perspective are required during such times. We encourage everyone to check their politics at the door and stay focused on their long-term goals.

Much of this is not for you.

Bio:

Recently promoted to multicultural banking officer at Union Bank & Trust, Blanca Valencia started her career with UBT in 2019 as a teller. She was promoted to personal banker in 2022 before transferring to the new Union Bank Place branch where she was promoted to non-real estate lender and senior personal banker in 2024.

What originally brought you to the finance sector?

I was drawn to the finance sector because I saw how important financial knowledge is in helping people build better lives. As someone who moved to the U.S. from Mexico, I witnessed firsthand how language barriers and lack of financial education can make it difficult for people — especially in multicultural communities — to navigate banking and business opportunities. That inspired me to pursue a career where I could help bridge that gap.

What do you enjoy most about this industry?

What I enjoy most is being able to educate and empower people, particularly in multicultural communities, to achieve their financial goals. Whether it’s helping a small business owner through the loan process or simply making banking more accessible, I love knowing that my work has a real impact. It’s incredibly rewarding to see people gain confidence in their financial future.

You were recently promoted to multicultural banking officer. What does this position entail and why is it important to the community?

As a multicultural banking officer, my role is to serve as a bridge between financial services and the diverse communities we support. I focus on making banking more accessible by providing financial education, tailored resources and lending solutions that meet the unique needs of individuals and small business owners from different cultural backgrounds.

Many people in multicultural communities face challenges such as language barriers, lack of credit history or unfamiliarity with the financial system. My job is to help break down those barriers and ensure

that everyone has an opportunity to build financial stability and success.

This role is important because financial inclusion strengthens our entire community. When people have the right tools and knowledge, they can grow their businesses, buy homes and plan for their futures with confidence. I’m passionate about empowering people through financial education and making sure they feel supported in their financial journey.

What is one piece of advice you would give your younger self?

One piece of advice I would give my younger self is to have confidence in my voice and the value I bring.

Early on, I sometimes doubted myself or hesitated to step outside my comfort zone. I’ve learned that growth happens when you take on challenges, ask questions and trust in your abilities. If I could go back, I’d remind myself that every experience, good or bad, is an opportunity to learn and that my unique perspective is a strength, not a weakness.

If you could do any other job, what would it be and why?

If I could do any other job, I think I’d be a financial educator or consultant for small businesses. I’m passionate about helping individuals and communities grow and I would love to focus more on guiding

A friend or family member is visiting Lincoln. Where are you taking them to experience Lincoln like a local?

If I wanted to show someone Lincoln like a local, I’d start with food — Honest Abe’s Burgers for a creative, mouthwatering burger and The Mill Coffee & Tea for a cozy local coffee experience.

For outdoor vibes, I’d take them to Sunken Gardens for a peaceful stroll or Pioneers Park to see the bison and enjoy nature. If it’s Saturday, the Haymarket Farmers Market (in season) is a must for local flavors and crafts.

To add some culture, we’d stop by the Sheldon Museum of Art. If it’s game day, nothing beats the energy of Memorial Stadium because Lincoln truly comes alive when the Huskers play.

Keeping Up with the Corporate Transparency Act

Small businesses have been subject to reporting requirements under the Corporate Transparency Act but pending litigation and changes in enforcement policies have left business owners wondering what’s next.

Q: What is the Corporate Transparency Act?

A: The Corporate Transparency Act (CTA) requires “reporting companies” to submit a Beneficial Ownership Information (BOI) Report to the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN) to promote ownership transparency in an effort to curb money laundering and financial terrorism.

Q: Who Files A BOI Report?

A: The CTA classifies “reporting companies” into two categories: (1) “domestic reporting companies” which are entities created by filing a document with a secretary of state in the United States, and (2) “foreign reporting companies” which are entities formed under foreign law that have registered to do business in the United States. The CTA requires reporting companies to file a BOI Report unless otherwise subject to one of 23 exemptions. However, on March 2, 2025, the United States Treasury Department issued a press release announcing that it intends to issue proposed rulemaking that will narrow the scope of the rule to only apply to foreign reporting companies.

Q: What is the Current Status of the CTA?

A: Pending litigation has temporarily halted the enforceability of the reporting requirements, but the CTA became enforceable once again after a preliminary injunction was struck down in mid-February. However, in its March 2 press release, the U.S. Treasury Department stated that it will not enforce any penalties or fines against U.S.

BY

citizens or domestic reporting companies or their beneficial owners for failure to file or update BOI Reports.

In addition to ongoing litigation and changes in enforcement policies, efforts in Congress (if passed) may further impact the reporting requirements. In a bipartisan effort, the U.S. House of Representatives voted to extend the reporting deadlines to January 1, 2026, for entities formed before January 1, 2024. Additionally, the United States Senate has introduced a bill that would repeal the CTA altogether.

Further developments are anticipated in the coming weeks. Meanwhile, additional information can be found at www.fincen.gov/boi or by counseling with your local attorney.

Over the past several years, Sarah Moore has led McGrath North’s CTA efforts by staying up to date with the latest guidance and advising clients on their reporting requirements.
