Last month, Rob and I were lucky enough to be invited to the inaugural CAP Expo event in Telford and what a wonderful weekend it was. With no dedicated party shows in the UK until this event launched, it was great to see so many of our industry join together in a fun, creative, positive and vibrant environment.
Some of the key party buyers attended the expo, as well as a host of party planners, balloon artists and indies. Exhibitors and visitors were, quite rightly, overwhelmingly positive in their response to the show and the team at BAPIA are busy planning next year’s event already. You can read more in the show review later in this issue.
of continued growth with a range of opportunities for brands and party suppliers to come together for products aimed at all ages and all occasions.
Earlier in the year, we kicked off with the annual trip to Spielwarenmesse, which party suppliers also spoke very highly of again this year, with strong visitor numbers and quality and a great atmosphere in the party sector of the show. Next up was Spring Fair, offering party suppliers a platform to showcase their goods to a wide range of buyers.
As we begin gearing up for summer parties, we have the usual Bank Holidays to kick things off – let’s hope the good weather continues and gives consumers the excuse to throw more parties. In May, the nation will come together to celebrate the 80th anniversary of VE Day with parties and events planned throughout the UK to commemorate and the ideal opportunity to bring out the bunting and offer a patriotic display in-store.
In this issue, we take a look at licensing in the party sector – an area
We also delve into the balloon sector, including the latest trends in balloon decorating, moves towards sustainable practice and the newest products to hit the market.
We will return for a summer issue, which will be on your desk in July, but in the meantime, Partyworldwide.net is your valued resource for keeping up to date with all of the latest goings on in the world of party. Rubies has hit its target to donate 100,000 costumes to underprivileged children in partnership with Every Child Deserves to Dream, World Book Day Charity, Parentkind and Smiffys.
In three months, Rubies, Smiffys and partners worked together to ship 100,000 free costumes in 1,700 shipments to 1,390 schools in the space of just two weeks.
The campaign was supported by donations from the Every Child Deserves to Dream Community Interest Company and Disney, which allowed selected lines from its portfolio to be included in the donations.
Fran Hales, head of marketing and portfolio at Rubies, commented: “Considering the teams are in one of our peak seasons with hundreds and thousands of orders per day, it has been an outstanding experience and success story of teamwork.
“We are extremely grateful to our project management, tech, marketing, administrative and logistics teams who have worked tirelessly to ensure costumes were delivered before the big day.
“I also want to acknowledge and thank Every Child Deserves To Dream for their support along with all the efforts that came from the teams at Smiffys and our other partners World Book Day Charity for their continued support and introducing us to Parentkind.
“Parentkind utilised their network of PTA’s and resources to drive awareness/demand, while building an ordering system that enabled us to ensure schools that needed them most, received their costumes.
“This is undoubtably an exceptional achievement, of which we will all look back on with immense pride.”

A new US-based turnkey balloon source, consulting firm and global exchange has launched with a new website to serve both B2B and consumer markets.
Founded by a group of industry veterans, the goal of the business is to fill a need for a stable, fullservice, US-based balloon supplier to ‘restore stability and confidence with buyers, distributors, decorators, planners and consumers’.
Cathy Sampson, president of Balloon Exchange commented: “We’ve got a deep bench of industry veterans behind this company. Our team’s experience and knowledge are unparalleled. We can’t wait for customers to
experience the difference.”
The founding team has researched all sectors of the industry and developed a
strategic plan to take on the many supply issues shared by distributors, decorators, wholesalers, retailers, marketers, entertainment industry buyers and consumers. The company plans to be a new kind of turnkey, global balloon supply solution – a balloon exchange – for any balloon problem or challenge.

A donation by Smiffys to Lincolnshire Libraries World Book Day Costume Swap and Create project helped turn around World Book Day for hundreds of families.
200 brand new costumes were handed over to Gainsborough Library and shared between the 14 Lincolnshire libraries taking part. The donation by the Gainsborough head office of Smiffys meant that quick, lastminute costumes were readily available to transform children into their favourite book characters.
The aim of Lincolnshire Libraries World Book Day Costume Swap and Create project is for all children and their parents who want to take part in World Book Day to have a ‘new to them’ costume. Parents were invited to bring along past costumes to donate and swap.
Nicola Rogers, GLL’s Lincolnshire Libraries partnership manager, said: “There’s been a terrific response to our clothes swap project. Since it started four weeks ago, so many people have got behind us. Word quickly spread and when Smiffys approached us with this amazing offer we were ecstatic.”
The project received funding worth £1,800 from the Libraries Connected and Arts Council England’s Microgrant programme. Nicola continued: “On top of having many costumes donated, the contribution from Smiffys has meant that those who didn’t have a costume to swap have accessed a brand new costume for World Book Day 2025. We couldn’t be more thankful for their generosity.”
Dominique Peckett, director at Smiffys commented: “We’re delighted to be a part of the Lincolnshire Libraries World Book Day Costume Swap by donating Smiffys costumes to children who might not have had the opportunity to dress up this year. With our warehouse and one of our offices based in Gainsborough, being able to help children in our local area join in with the magic of World Book Day by bringing characters to life is a privilege for us.”
also sources from its vetted list of suppliers and is identifying and qualifying new vendors regularly.
“Our brand reflects our mission,” said Cathy. “We’re not just selling balloons; we’re providing solutions. We’re more than a traditional manufacturer, broker, distributor, factory rep, consultant or holding company.
“Balloon Exchange is a dream team in a position to deliver anything and everything balloon-related. We’re only limited by our customers’ imaginations.”
“We will reshape the industry,” Cathy emphasised. “This launch is the beginning of a new era of reliability and ingenuity in the balloon industry. We’re proud to finally bring Balloon Exchange to life and help our customers, as our tag line says, ‘Inflate Happiness’.”

Party City has successfully completed auctions of its IP and related wholesale operations, as well as a significant portion of its real estate lease portfolio.
Together, these efforts to maximise value will generate substantial proceeds for the benefit of stakeholders in the company’s chapter 11 proceedings.
Following robust bidding, New Amscan, an affiliate of Ad Populum, emerged as the winning bidder for the Party City brand and related Amscan operating assets. New Amscan’s prevailing bid, which has a net value of $20m, comprised of $16m in cash and additional consideration, represents twice the value of its ‘stalking horse’ bid.
As previously announced, Ad Populum intends to lead a transformation of the Party City and Amscan brands, leveraging its strengths in sourcing and distribution to preserve and build upon Party City’s legacy.
The company’s lease auction process resulted in approximately $14.5m of gross proceeds, with the potential for additional value to be generated. Efforts to monetise remaining leases are continuing.
“Bangoberry has been widely embraced by toy chains, independents and gift shops across Europe, through our dedicated local distributors and this collaboration with Chaks is the perfect tie-in.
“The artworks are simply adorable and coupled with the great quality of Chak’s products, and the creativity of all SKUs, we can’t wait for this collection to hit the stores this summer.”

What message do you want to share with your target market and how do you go about promoting it? Have you made the most of all the networking opportunities 2025 has already presented to the balloon and party industry?
In the first four months of the year, we’ll have had Spring Fair, British Balloon Bash, CAP Expo and the Party Industry Event (PIE) 2025 and there are more to come. All of these events provide valuable opportunities to network, gain feedback and learn more about how we can service our target market’s needs, but some companies avoid these events due to a lack of time, cost or simply not wanting to put themselves ‘out there’. To illustrate the value in attending these events, this is how NABAS has participated and benefited from them:
Spring Fair: We supported our supplier member Sensations International on its stand, demonstrating its fabulous new products and showing potential clients what can be created with them. This was a great opportunity to get product feedback and also discuss how NABAS can continue to support its members most effectively.
British Balloon Bash: NABAS has enjoyed a long relationship with BBB, which is an excellent event with a twisting focus. By sponsoring excellent competition prizes at the event, we want to encourage as many delegates as possible to challenge themselves and their skills in a fun way.
CAP Expo: This was another opportunity to connect with our current and potential members in a fun and engaging environment. Exhibiting at these types of events enables you to share your message
to a concentrated audience and if you attend, you’ll find a range of companies there who may all be able to help you in your business in different ways.

With a fabulous masqueradethemed gala dinner and our first ever awards ceremony also taking place at the event, it is truly going to be an event that celebrates and encourages business owners to learn, to network, to be inspired and to grow both their confidence and business skills.
If you want to join us at PIE25, there are still a few tickets available at www.nabas.co.uk/pie-2025/.
By being at all these events, we can build relationships with industry suppliers and show our existing and potential members the support that they can draw on to boost their business skills and drive their business forward.

We call the costume business an industry, but below the surface it’s more of a craft. So many creative people making beautiful things that spread joy. The business side of things is necessary, of course, but we shouldn’t forget the craft.
Iwas reminded of that recently when I had the pleasure to interview Tony Zagone, co-owner of Zagone Studios, a long-time supplier of high-quality masks to the costume industry. The reason for the interview was sad – the company is closing due to rising costs and other factors – but overall, what we discussed was uplifting.
Tony talked about the beginnings of his company. It emerged out of a magic shop his uncle ran in Chicago and evolved into a mask manufacturer when Tony’s uncle and father –Robert and Phil Zagone, respectively – realised that customers wanted masks but were unhappy with the quality of existing products.
Tony said: “My uncle and dad saw this opening, this unsatisfied customer and need and like other initiatives they wanted to make something better. Then they ran into a guy who said he knew how to make masks and he was set up in our garage to create and experiment.
“My older brother and I were the initial labour force. We would pour the masks, vulcanise them in the household clothes dryer and trim them. In fact, we both had to give up Little League to work.”
When they sold those first masks, they observed what customers liked and didn’t like and made adjustments to the designs. Among the innovations they developed in those early years were masks that
could be easily adjusted and which allowed the wearer to comfortably breathe. Not to mention that they were far more realistic – and scary – than the competing products.
“I think the key to success with some of our best masks was that they were extremely unique at the time,” Tony said. “There was nothing like them. Some had movement, they fit really well, the wearer could entertain while wearing them and be the hit of the party. Product success was always a combination of the artwork, the look, the functionality, quality production and the uniqueness that made them successful.”
That kind of craftwork made Zagone Studios especially popular among independent costume businesses that appreciated the quality. These stores – many of which are members of the National Costumers Association – like to offer their customers high-quality products that they can’t find in ‘big box’ stores.
Ironically, it was the failure of one of those big box stores –Party City – that partially led to the end of Zagone Studios.
But the legacy of the company lives on: “It was very satisfying to make these masks, to see them being sold on the shelf was an amazing feeling,” Tony said. “The things we created brought a lot of fun to our customers and made the industry improve.”
The craftsmanship that Zagone Studios demonstrated is the beating heart of the costume industry. Let’s hope that that spirit continues even as some companies – like Zagone – pass on.
The inaugural CAP Expo took place at the Telford International Centre last month, bringing together suppliers, buyers and party companies from around the UK and further afield. PPE catches up with organiser, BAPIA and some of the exhibitors to find out how the show was for them.
Social media is buzzing with photos, videos and comments about The Celebration and Party Expo (CAP Expo) 2025. CAP Expo has established itself as the premier gathering for professionals in the celebration and party sector.
With attendees and exhibitors from across Europe and The Americas, this year’s expo offered a vibrant platform for networking, creativity and growth. Jacob Megram events and project manager, BAPIA said: “We wanted to create a community event where everybody could benefit from being here and enjoy themselves.”
CAP Expo 2025 was designed to unite the celebration and party industry, providing a welcoming space for everyone from seasoned professionals to eager newcomers. The atmosphere was filled with enthusiasm as exhibitors and guests explored trends and innovations across a diverse range of sectors, including event planning, balloon artistry, floristry, and face painting.
A key highlight of the event was the impressive line-up of 14 speakers, including Natalie
“After a challenging 12 months in the celebrations sector, Unique UK was delighted to participate in the inaugural Celebration and Party Expo (CAP Expo). For Unique, the event provided a much-needed opportunity to reconnect with both existing clients and potential partners, reinforcing the strength and unity of our industry community.
“The event’s thoughtfully designed structure, orchestrated by the dedicated team at the Balloon and Party Industry Alliance (BAPIA), allowed ample time for exchanging ideas and exploring new opportunities. This balance between business and creative engagement set CAP Expo apart from other industry events.
“Having everything under one roof not only streamlined networking, but also showcased the breadth and depth of talent and innovation within the sector. This approach elevated the event, setting a new standard for what a sectorspecific exhibition can achieve.
Saunders from The Balloon Room, Daze Livingstone, a master of content creation and Alexis Reardon, who introduced Fanfaire’s ground-breaking sales solutions to UK entrepreneurs. Their insightful presentations provided attendees with valuable strategies and inspiration to enhance their businesses.
The Balloon & Brush Couture Challenge was another major feature of the Expo, with balloon artists, face painters and models collaborating to create incredible works of art that culminated in a catwalk show and the presentation of fabulous awards and cash prizes.
Sue Bowler of BAPIA comments: “The artists and models have been amazing and their work has paid off with some incredible results. Competitions are always tough but that’s what makes them worthwhile. I think the attendees also enjoyed seeing the creations come to life and being inspired by what can be achieved when artists collaborate.”
The expo featured 57 exhibitors which collectively generated over 8,800 leads, cementing CAP Expo 2025 as a hub for business development and collaboration. The diverse exhibition floor allowed participants to explore cutting-edge products and services, while fostering relationships that will undoubtedly impact the industry.
The event attracted attendees from around the globe, including representatives from the UK and as far away as Perth, Australia. Notable organisations such as Card Factory, Sainsbury’s and The British Floristry Association were in attendance, making CAP Expo 2025 a truly international celebration of creativity and innovation.

As the industry continues to grow and evolve, CAP Expo will provide essential opportunities for networking, education and inspiration. Here’s to the success of CAP Expo 2025 and the bright future ahead.
Anyone who visited CAP Expo this year will know that balloons are big business, with some cutting edge innovation in the sector at the moment. PPE sits down with some key suppliers to find out what’s new in inflatable art.
Balloons are the focus of many consumer spectacles around the world, including the Big Balloon Builds, Balloon Museum, the current Giochi sul Tavolo exhibition and many more, highlighting their popularity with consumers, not just for party purposes, but also as an art form.
The versatility of balloons means that they can be used in a huge variety of ways, but the sheer scale of many of these events has raised concerns around sustainability. This is an area which Gemar is placing at the forefront of its business, creating new and innovative ways to improve the eco credentials of its products.
Gloria Veta, sales and marketing director, explains: “At Gemar Balloons, sustainability isn’t just a trend—it’s core to our business philosophy. Our 100% FSC C155424 -certified product line demonstrates our commitment to responsible sourcing and environmental stewardship.
“Today’s consumers are increasingly conscious of their environmental impact, actively seeking eco-friendly alternatives for celebrations. We’ve responded by developing 100% FSC options and minimising packaging waste while maintaining the premium quality our customers expect.”
shades, accented with gold and prosecco toned metallics will be trending this spring. Anagram’s ‘Floral Symphony’ palette of the month draws on this trend – adding pops of pink for a fresh springtime look.”
“Other trends we are predicting for spring include butterflies and dragonflies. As well as nature inspired themes, Anna expects certain foods to influence balloon design over the coming months, too. “Thinking ahead to summer, we predict that fruits will be trending – and Anagram’s new Iridescent Cherries and Strawberries SuperShape foils are perfect for adding instant summer freshness to décor.”
Gloria believes that this responsibility should be shared by the industry and indeed many other suppliers are working to create increasingly sustainable practices. Gloria continues: “The party industry must collectively embrace innovation in materials’ environmental impact, production efficiency and waste reduction. By establishing industry-wide standards for environmental impact assessment, we can build consumer trust and drive meaningful change.
“Gemar is proud to lead this transformation with continuous investment in sustainable manufacturing processes and educating customers about responsible balloon use and disposal.
“Together, we can ensure celebrations bring joy without environmental cost— creating a future where sustainable choices become the industry standard rather than the exception.”
Outside of the materials used for balloons, there are some key trends emerging for summer. Anna Hickman, product manager at Anagram Europe says: “Organic style latex balloon décor continues to be popular for those important celebrations – and we expect that sage and eucalyptus green
