T

he SDA market has enjoyed a fabulous start to the year. Having reacted quickly and effectively to the macro climate, suppliers are offering energy saving, durable, relevant products for the challenges facing consumers, and their efforts have clearly paid off.

GfK’s Bruce Denton has provided a detailed breakdown of the remarkable successes of the first quarter of 2023 on page 30, and of course, air fryers are highlighted as a standout victory and the poster product of the SDA sector during the cost-of-living crisis, with sales continuing to soar. But energy saving appliances in general are also performing incredibly well.

The shift to hybrid working and working from home has left us all missing not only the water cooler gossip, but also the cheeky coffee shop trips on the way to our desks, so barista style coffee machines and luxury teamakers are also enjoying success. Team PH headed to the London Coffee Festival last month to meet with the Smeg team and find out more about the heritage Italian La Pavoni brand and its incredible espresso machines – more on page 28.

Another heritage brand enjoying success, but this one quintessentially British, is Haden, owned by Sabichi. The instantly recognisable appliances remain a firm favourite with consumers and the new air fryers in the collection are also performing very well. PH delved deeper into the brand with Sabichi – read more on page 20.

Other key trends are highlighted in our SDA round up on page 22, and most of these and more are readying their wares for the upcoming Exclusively Housewares show from 13-14 June at the Business Design Centre in London. Cutting edge innovation was also seen earlier this year at the Inspired Home Show in Chicago. Sarah Selzer has highlighted some hot picks on page 10, along with a round up of the event.

Later in the year, much of the industry will head to Berlin for the IFA show. This year, the event management has changed hands to newly formed IFA Management, and PE caught up with managing director, Oliver Merlin, to find out what he and his team are planning for the 99th year of the show. There’s plenty of new features and content coming for 2023, with big plans for the centenary next year. Find out more on page 14.

With so much in the calendar, we also wanted to remind you that the entries for the Excellence in Housewares Awards are now open. With a wide range of categories for both product excellence and retail, including the Plugged In category, ideal for SDA, there’s plenty of opportunity to get your business in front of our panel of expert judges. Head over to the website –www.excellenceinhousewaresawards.co.uk – to get your submissions in, which are, as always, free of charge. See you at Exclusively.

Featuring insights from every angle of consumer tech, the programme will feature authorities in their fields such as global AI and privacy expert Ivana Bartoletti and professor Chris Miller, author of Chip War: The Fight for the World’s Most Critical Technology.

SDA market up 41% in Q3 year-on-year

GfK has seen a continuing trend for shoppers buying energy saving SDAs, as well as recreating café style hot drinks at home.

Recent statistics from GfK’s Point of Sales Tracking for the durable consumer goods market, have shown that demand for energy saving appliances, as well as the shift in lifestyles to more hybrid working and working from home, has boosted the SDA market.

Air fryers are the category driving growth, and the market grew 285% in Q1 2023. Compared to the 12 months to March 2019 – pre-pandemic – the category is up 1,103%.

Meanwhile, hot beverage makers also grew 3.2% year-on-year in Q1 2023, while it was 28% higher than Q1 2020.

Client solutions consultant, Bruce Denton, told PH: “At GfK, we believe that consumers will continue to spend wisely on appliances offering quality output and practical benefits and models offering additional energy saving benefits are likely to thrive.”

Spear & Jackson announces new partnership with Benross

The new licensing programme will launch later this year and feature a range of Air Treatment products for the home including dehumidifiers, diffusers, air purifiers and related accessories, plus Air Temperature-Control products for the home, such as heaters and fans.

Ian Archer, managing director of Spear & Jackson Tools Group, said: “We are thrilled to enter this new relationship with Benross Marketing and it marks a new milestone to see our brand further incorporated across an ever-growing category of Spear & Jackson performance products for the home.

“Our core tools business continues to innovate and evolve from our proud heritage in Sheffield since 1760, and over these past few years we have been delighted with the success and growth of our brand licensing programme.

“Welcoming Benross to the programme has been positive from the start and we are looking forward to working together and bringing new Spear & Jackson products to customers across a wide retail landscape.”

Amit Juneja, managing director, Benross Marketing, added: “We are all very excited to be part of the Spear & Jackson family of licensees. We have been keen to work with the team at S&J for some time and when the opportunity presented itself we were delighted to forge this new relationship and we’re looking forward to bringing some stand-out products into retail later this year and beyond.”

Remoska introduces Tria 3-in-1 Oven-toTable Electric Cooker

Featuring multiple cooking methods, three lids and able to act as a casserole dish, the Tria is versatile and ideal for travel.

Remoska’s new Tria electric cooker can bake, roast and grill like the previous versions, but can also now function as a clear glass casserole dish and a pressurised pan with its SoftPressure lid. The new function allows consumers to prepare slow-cooked style meals in a fraction of the time.

The 4.5l cooking pot provides a capacity of three litres and is coated with three layers of high quality non-stick coating, making it easy to clean and dishwasher safe. Its smart design allows it to be carried straight to the table for serving, and it can also be used on any hob.

Featuring a 610W baking lid, the cooker can bake, roast and grill foods, but also has a clear glass window to easily check on cooking progress, as well as a simple on/off switch. The glass lid is made from toughened glass with a vent. The power cable can be detached from the lid and it uses very little energy while cooking, making it ideal for energy saving.

The SoftPressure lid makes the Tria more versatile with a pressure valve that makes stovetop cooking faster than normal, by increasing the pressure in the pan. The lid locks into the handles with a onehanded mechanism and a red spot ensures it is done correctly.

Marks Electrical reports record year

Sales for the full year, ended 31 March, 2023, were £97.8 million, up 21.5%.

Marks Electrical said that a strong performance was driven across all categories, but particularly in small domestic appliances including air fryers, coffee machines and vacuum cleaners.

Gross margin improved in the second half, as anticipated, and higher revenue levels combined with cost discipline drove margin expansion. The group is now expecting to receive a full year adjusted EBITDA exceeding £7.5 million.

Mark Smithson, ceo, commented: “We are delighted to finish the year with revenue growth of 21.5% to a record £97.8m, especially against the prevailing economic backdrop. This further demonstrated the strength of our business model and the attractiveness and advantage of our market-leading customer offering, as more people continue to discover the brand up and down the country.

“As we look to FY24, we are wholly focused on maintaining our performance management discipline on revenue, profit and cash in order to continue to demonstrate our differentiated proposition.”

Magic Bullet partners with artists for new wraps

The US manufacturer has launched the artist-designed wraps to celebrate creativity and self expression in and out of the kitchen. In line with its recent rebrand, Magic Bullet, is giving away a limited number of the new wraps to inspire its modern consumers to get creative in the kitchen. Last year, the brand introduced itself to Gen Z customers with a refreshed product line providing fun, versatile and accessible appliances.

John Olson, brand manager at Magic Bullet explained: “Magic Bullet’s new branding and wraps put a refreshed spin on the brand for a new audience that cares deeply about individuality and authenticity. Our hope is that the brand and new decorative accessories not only add a splash of colour to consumers’ worktops, but further emphasise the power of self expression in our lives and in the kitchen.”

To design the wraps, Magic Bullet teamed up with Shanee Benjamin, Jiaqi Wang, and Spencer Gabor. All three wraps fit around the base of the Magic Bullet Original Blender and are made of durable, waterproof, and easy-to-clean material.

In addition to the new wraps, the brand has partnered with Canstruction, a global hunger relief non-profit organisation, which hosts events in cities around the world to benefit food banks.

In September, Magic Bullet will sponsor Canstruction Orange County’s month-long competition in conjunction with Festival of the Children at South Coast Plaza in Costa Mesa, California. The competition sees entrants design and build sculptures out of canned food and at the end of the event, the cans are donated to local food banks.

Reliable, portable and equipped with smart features that cut down on hassle and running costs, Bluestem Group’s Igenix range of air conditioners, air circulators and air purifiers is the natural choice for anyone looking to make their home cooler and more comfortable this summer.

Beat the heat with Igenix

UK summers are getting hotter than ever, bringing uncomfortable temperatures and sleepless nights – while for hay fever sufferers, there’s the added misery of itchy eyes, a runny nose and other debilitating symptoms. While air cooling and purifying solutions can offer relief, budget-conscious consumers are increasingly seeking out cost-effective options such as Bluestem Group’s Igenix range, which includes smart models that help reduce energy usage.

Air conditioners

Air conditioners are adept at cooling rooms by removing heat and humidity. Igenix offers a range of options that are portable, lightweight and come with a choice of fan, cooling and dehumidifying modes to allow users to create their ideal environment throughout the summer months. With built-in timers and sleep modes, Igenix air conditioners are costeffective and energy saving, too, enabling customers to cool rooms at times that best suit their needs. The Igenix Smart 9000BTU 3-in-1 Air Conditioner

(IG9909WIFI) even comes equipped with wifi functionality, allowing users to control the unit from their phone or from a smart speaker such as Amazon Alexa or Google Home.

Air circulators

With its multi-direction action, an air circulator is more efficient at moving air than a standard fan, and can be used to boost the effect of an air conditioner by dispersing the cooled air to every corner of the room. The newly launched Igenix IGFD4009W Air Circulator Turbo Fan has an incredible 32 wind speeds and 3 wind modes – normal, natural and sleep – and a multidirectional auto oscillation, including full 360° horizontal and 90° vertical tilt angles. It also features a scented oil diffusing pad in front of the fan blades; just add a few drops of essential oil to impart a subtle fragrance to your room.

Air purifiers

Hay fever sufferers can experience allergic reactions even inside the home, but by filtering air and pushing clean air back out, an air purifier can, if used consistently, help to reduce airborne pollutants such as pollen spores and other particles given off by trees and crops at this time of year. The Igenix IG9600WIFI Smart Air Purifier boasts three-stage HEPA 13 filtration, which removes 99.97% of viruses, polluted particles, odours, allergens and dust from the air in your home. It also has a wifi feature that can be connected to the Smart Life app via an Android or iOS phone to clearly display which mode is currently in use, current temperature, air quality and more. The Igenix IG9600WIFI Smart Air Purifier can also be synchronised with Amazon Alexa or Google Home for hands-free voice control.  Bluestem Group is exhibiting at the Exclusively show on stand EH264.

Chicago: Innovation and inspiration

Back for its second outing since Covid, the Inspired Home Show in Chicago majored, as ever, on innovation, with a growing presence for SDA and Smart Home. Sarah Selzer reports.

The Inspired Home Show is a great multipurpose event. You can make connections with distributors, brands and buyers from your own country as well as international, attend keynote presentations (a stand-out this time included TikTok), see displays from international retailer winners of the gias and meet the designers of the future with the student design winners.

It is definitely a show principally about product and if you’re looking for the latest in SDA and smart home, you won’t be disappointed. There is a dedicated expo, Wired + Well, which will next year be located in the North Hall, which also houses Clean + Contain, while the South Hall is home to Dine + Décor. Some SDA and smart home can be found in the other two expos.

Within the halls you will find the Hall of Global Innovation – ‘the connected life your customers crave’ – where the focus is the future of home,

covering evolving consumer trends, smart concepts and product design. Global Innovation is made up of several exhibition areas including Market Watch which highlights products in line with key consumer trends for this year and the Inventor’s Revue.

There is also a dedicated area, the Smart Home Pavilion, with a selection of brands on show. What’s great with both the Inventor’s Revue and the Smart Home area, is you get one-to-one time with them –

Pitch to the pros

l Inventor’s Revue gives small brands the opportunity to present to major retailers, as well as seek advice from the ‘Pitch to the Pros’ panel. This year, one of the group of panellists included several former contestants on the Shark Tank (the US equivalent to the UK’s Dragons Den).

One inventor looking to secure major interest was Terry Robiskie who, with coffee maker manufacturer EHB, has created the patented Helmet Coffee Maker ‘offering sports fans a unique way to support their team year-round, one cup of coffee at a time’. With NFL increasing its popularity in the UK, there could well be traction on this. The product is already being licensed to racing teams and the military.

Brand and product highlights

The show is packed full of exhibitors from the Americas as well as a selection from around the world. Here is a taster and you can find details on all the 2023 exhibitors on the app https://app.theinspiredhomeshow.com/Connect365

Indian manufacturer Hamilton Housewares has a range of products including microwave-safe insulated steel casseroles and also, on show in the Smart Home Pavilion, was the 1.5l/2.5l Smart Hotpot with detachable stainless steel container. This allows you to warm food through a smartphone app from wherever you are. It’s compatible with AI assistants too.

Simplehuman had several smart home products on show – the Cleanstation which uses 30 UV-C LEDs to eliminate 99.9% of bacteria from a mobile phone, in just 30 seconds, and dual compartment rectangular sensor bin. This features voice control and the bin will open at the sound of your voice. You can also instruct it to stay open and closed, plus it has a motion sensor.

UK designer Gavin Reay was a first-time exhibitor at The Inspired Home Show with uutensil, showcasing his USB rechargeable onehanded stirrer, Stirr. “The initial launch in the US was a sell-out success as I think consumers recognise the value of a more environmentally-friendly power source.”

On the healthy-eating side, and with more than a nod to encouraging sustainable living by reducing carton and food waste, is the patent-pending Nutr Machine. This makes nut and plantbased milks and the team behind it are pushing through for international sales outside of its North American home market. It’s pronounced ‘nutter’ too.

US brand Trova has a range of smart safes that look just like boxes if they’re seen on a shelf or cabinet – the large black model could easily pass for a home scanner or printer. Trova is already selling into the UK through some outlets but is keen on getting winder coverage.

The Funky Appliance Co was attending its first Inspired Home Show and co-founder and ceo, Joe Sillett, described the experience as “up onto a level that even I have been surprised by.”

New Funky Microwaves joined the toasters and kettles.

FinaMill is the world’s first electronic spice grinder with interchangeable pods, which double as storage for all your spices and can be swapped in and out with just a couple of clicks. Onehanded operation makes them perfect for multitasking cooks and people with limited mobility.

each brand usually has one or two personnel at their mini booth and some are dual-sited, exhibiting in one of the other expos if they have related products. It’s a similar set up with Inventor’s Revue, although this is the only area they’re showcased in.

One brand I met in the Smart Home Pavilion is BRU from Switzerland – a teamaker, available in white and gold or black and gold and the brainchild of co-founders Filip Carlberg and Bogdan Krinitchko, second-time exhibitors and keen to get into the UK.

“It’s always a pleasure to be at the show, especially as a young European startup,” said Bogdan. “It’s the chance to meet with international, and of course a lot of USbased industry professionals. Fun fact –that’s where we met both our Swiss and German distributors.”

there's not that feeling around it. It's sort of stabilised. It's not going backwards, but it's become a case of there being a lot of white goods and they've missed things like gaming and AI and meta. So we're trying to make sure it gets back to being relevant.”

Now the responsibility of IFA Management, a new joint venture founded by gfu Consumer and Home Electronics, together with independent event organiser, Clarion, IFA 2023 is set to build on the impressive history of the electronics show, which is gearing up to celebrate 100 years in 2024.

Oliver Merlin, managing director of IFA Management, tells us: “IFA is just an amazing institution. When we signed the deal for Clarion to take over the running of the show, we went to meet the mayor and do a big signing ceremony. And since then the amount of press interested in being involved is incredible. Every Berliner that you've ever met, every German, in fact, has been to IFA at some point in their life.

“Historically, IFA has been very good at keeping its finger on the pulse of all the latest developments. And, if you look back through the 99-year history, there's an amazing amount of product firsts. They've had people like Albert Einstein speaking and opening the show. So it's got a cutting edge feel to it.”

Oliver and his team are looking to regain that cutting edge feeling: “I think at the moment

Some of the changes will start to be seen at the 2023 show, but change will be gradual. Oliver explains: “The scale of IFA is so vast, I often liken it to sailing the Titanic. You've got to be very careful how quickly you move it, because otherwise you hit an iceberg. So we're taking our time and doing things gradually. I call it evolution, not revolution.”

One of the new aspects in 2023 will be the content schedule. “You'll find we're really majoring on content this year. Content at IFA used to be quite commercial, where the major exhibitors would talk about their products. We're doing a lot of content this year that is not commercial, it's people talking about key issues and innovation, which is a huge area where IFA has fallen behind a little bit.

“So we've got everything from serious professors in quite high brow subjects, to gamers and YouTubers.

THE BIG INTERVIEW: IFA BERLIN
Right: IFA Next is being expanded at the 2023 show with more exhibitors, and a content programme to support. Below: Oliver Merlin, managing director of IFA Management. Below right: Content is key for IFA 2023 and there will be a lot more non-commercial content with thought leaders, gamers, influencers and more.
14 PROGRESSIVE ELECTRICAL
As IFA Berlin readies for its 99th show in September, a new management partnership is in place to rejuvenate the event. Oliver Merlin, managing director of IFA Management, tells PE what’s planned for the 2023 event, and what the future holds for IFA.

And we've actually got the ceo of King, the makers of Candy Crush speaking on stage. So we're really pushing off in that direction to try and get the consumers really interested in IFA again.”

Another key focus is the environment: “Sustainability has been absolutely massive and we always knew we would have a sustainability stream. But every customer we've spoken to without fail has wanted to be part of it. So we've got a whole physical space now called the Sustainability Village, which will have its own content programme, exhibitors, sponsors, and it's grown and grown and grown. We're having to keep taking more and more floor space because it's just been incredible.

“That reflects what's going on in society. Where probably it was factor number three or four in people's decision-making processes a couple of years ago, now it's number one. If you're a company and you haven't got your story straight on the environment, you're almost out of the picture for a lot of people. It's just as important as the quality of the product or the price.”

Gaming will also have a spotlight with an arena where consumers can go and have fun, which is one of the aims of the show.

The next big thing in tech may also be found at IFA. Oliver furthers: “There's also a start-up and innovation zone called IFA Next, and that's been quite small recently. They only had 137 start-ups last year, and this year we're going for 500. We're really trying to expand the innovation side and have IFA as somewhere we can really see what's coming next in tech.

“It's the point of having that constantly bubbling away, that hotbed of ideas of crazy people who think they can change the world, along with VCs and investors, and there'll be a whole content programme around that.”

Since taking on the management of the show, IFA Management has been visiting competitor shows to get a feel for the market. Oliver comments: “So the first thing that happens, is the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, and then there's Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. And then there's South by

Southwest in Austin. We've been to see all of those and I really think there's an opportunity for IFA to be in that league and if not, be the best in that league.”

To meet that goal, IFA Management has grown this year from a handful of people, to a team of around 40 based around the world. Oliver expands:

“Previously the team that were organising were all based out of the Messe Berlin, but I think we've got a really nice balance now. We've got several of the people who used to work on the old IFA Berlin to join my team. I think it's now almost about 50/50. I think we've got 20 people who are in Berlin or Germany. And then a mixture of people like myself who travel from elsewhere.

“I think the great thing about that is we've got the knowledge from the past, so we've got all that great history, and that feeling for what it was, and then a whole bunch of new thinking. And so you get this really nice mix for that international outlook. And I think that's right because we want to compete on the global stage.”

With these plans in place, IFA looks set to grow from an established show into an even better international event.

The Tower VL Series floorcare collection launched in 2023, and will be in attendance at Exclusively. The new vacuum cleaner range is exhibiting, including the top of the range Tower VL100 Optimum vacuum cleaner.

Complete with a touch screen LED display, with four power modes, Eco, Medium, High, and Auto, dust sensor technology in the Tower VL100 vacuum cleaner continuously detects dust particles, automatically increasing suction power for higher dust levels. The ultra-efficient floorhead agitates dust and dirt, complete with anti-tangle technology, preventing hair build-up.

Another exhibiting VL Series floorcare product includes the VL80 Flexi Cordless vacuum cleaner, with a 75cm Flexi pole for going under tables and other low down areas to provide powerful cleaning performance.

Tower air fryers

Attendees can expect to see a range of existing and new Tower air fryer models on display at Exclusively 2023.

Tower air fryers continue take the market by storm with over 2.5 million units sold in the last 3 years alone. Consumers are now looking to elevate their cooking capabilities by upgrading to more sophisticated models with added functionality, such as Tower’s largest Dual Basket air fryer to date, the Tower Elite 11L Dual Basket air fryer.

Created with stainless steel accents and enhanced features for the ultimate high-end air frying experience, the 1700W power model incorporates Tower Vortx technology which retail customers know and love, saving up to 70% on energy costs.

The air fryer models’ sync function allows consumers to cook two different meals in each 5.5L compartment, with staggered start times to ensure both finish cooking together, resulting in hot and fresh food every time.

The highly anticipated Tower Eco Saver range will also be on display at Exclusively 2023, combining the benefits of Tower air fryers, with a new space-saving design. The new models feature a smaller footprint than alternative air fryers, taking up 20% less space in the kitchen. There is an added space-saving benefit within shipping and transport containers, due to smaller product and packaging sizes. This lowers wider environmental impacts and costs associated with Eco Saver models.

Tower Eco Saver air fryers retain the functionality of previous Tower air fryer models, featuring Vortx technology. Models with in-built Vizion technology also save consumer’s time and money, by allowing food monitoring without opening air fryer doors. The Tower Eco Saver range will become available in 3L, 6L, and 7.5L sizes.

Having acquired Haden in 2016, Sabichi has worked hard to retain the British heritage of the brand, while also innovating and keeping the brand modern and relevant. Progressive Electrical catches up with director Sachin Bagga to find out more.

A cuppa with… Haden

Haden has a history spanning 150 years, with origins as a bicycle manufacturer in the late 1880s. Founder Alfred Haden’s sons, Donald and Denis, took over the business in 1937, renaming it Haden Bros.

A monumental shift came in 1944 when Haden Bros veered from bicycle manufacturing and entered the realm of kettle production. This move marked the beginning of a transformation that would revolutionize the kettle industry. The company pioneered the cordless Bescol kettle and used the powder coating machinery originally used for bike parts, to apply colour to the kettles. A revolutionary process that enhanced the kettle’s durability and longevity.

In 1958, Denis established his own company, DH Haden, to concentrate solely on kettle manufacturing, which led to the birth of the Haden brand as we know it today.

Sabichi director, Sachin Bagga, furthers: “With a strong commitment to quality manufacturing, meticulous attention to detail and a passion for design, the brand has achieved great success and continues to create collections in the breakfast and kitchen appliance space.”

Sabichi acquired Haden in 2016, and over the past seven years, the company has focused on keeping the brand’s strong identity. Sachin explains: “Preserving the heritage and quintessentially British identity of Haden is central to what we do. Staying true to the brand’s roots and values is important. Our product designs are heritage, they are reminiscent of the past, but sit in any contemporary kitchen.

“The Haden brand is reflective of English culture, our rich nature and stunning market towns. Following Haden’s heritage in pioneering colour and design on kettles, we draw inspiration from the brand’s history and have always incorporated this into a key pillar of our design handwriting. We take great care to ensure that Haden is showcased in a way that is authentic and reflects its rich heritage as the original English kettle.”

It's a combination of this heritage with the brand’s

passion for creating products its customers love, which Sachin believes makes Haden stand out in the SDA market. “Haden items are ergonomic yet beautiful,” he enthuses, “making them a popular choice for people who want appliances that perform exceptionally well, but have a high aesthetic in their homes.”

Customer service is also a USP: “We understand our success depends on the satisfaction of our customers – both retail and consumer – and we are committed to providing the highest level of support to ensure all customers have a positive experience.”

While the essence of the brand is in its heritage, the team ensures that the product offering reflects consumer trends, too. Sachin continues: “We have always been committed to offering innovative and high quality products that meet the needs of our customers. As such, expanding into the air fryer market allowed us to provide our customers with a new and exciting way to prepare healthy and delicious meals at home.

“Our air fryer range has always been an ergonomic offering, but in 2022, we introduced the quintessentially Haden Putty colour into our collection and it has been a resounding success.”

As well as the new air fryer, there have been a number of other introductions to the portfolio over the last year, despite a challenging climate.

“Overall the past year has been an exciting and colourful one for the brand, but not without its challenges,” Sachin tells us. “Like many businesses, we faced some ups and downs due to the current economic environment and external macro influences.

Exclusively Haden

However we have navigated these choppy waters cautiously and calmly and will continue to focus on our customers.

“Despite the challenges, we are proud of the strides we have made in expanding our product lines, introducing new heritage designs, and continuing to grow and adapt in response to changing consumer needs. We are optimistic about the future and are committed to building on the successes of the past year, while also learning from the lessons and experiences we have gained.”

And there’s much more in the pipeline, as Sachin outlines: “We will continue to focus on quintessentially British design and style, with an emphasis on colour and patterns. You will see the introduction of a number of new ranges in the Haden breakfast category, as well as the kitchen appliance category.

“We will also be partnering with an exciting future positive brand to create a capsule collection that will launch in the UK. With a strong commitment to quality and customer satisfaction, we are confident that the brand will continue to deliver exceptional products and experiences that delight its customers and drive its continued success.”

Haden is a brand steeped in history, but it is certainly not stuck in the past.

l As the brand readies to showcase at the Exclusively show at the Business Design Centre in London in June on stand EH214, there is much to look forward to. Sachin comments: “Our plans for the Haden brand at Exclusively Housewares 2023 are focused on strengthening our relationships with existing customers and meeting with new potential customers. We will be showing our existing items for customers who are not familiar with them, and introducing new and exciting lines.”

Electric avenue

Key factors in purchasing decisions have changed somewhat over the last few years when it comes to the small domestic appliance (SDA) market. Value is key, sustainability a big factor, and energy saving is never far from our minds in the current climate. PE catches up with some key suppliers to find out their latest launches and what trends they are seeing in the market.

While we may have returned to normal following the pandemic, for many it’s a new normal as our lifestyles have changed, which in turn has had an effect on how we shop for, and use electricals in the home. Many now have hybrid working patterns, or work entirely from home, creating a desire for the products we enjoyed while out and about, at home.

When coupled with the macro economic climate, and the pressure on consumer budgets, this has created a step change in the SDA market in particular. Barista style coffee machines and high-end hot beverage makers are trending, as Marcus Lux, head of Gastroback UK, export and business development tells us: “There’s the ongoing trends for espresso and coffee machines and kettles and toasters. With such a squeeze on spending at the moment, consumers are really looking for value-for-money but also versatility, robust and durable products and ease-of-use. All our products carry a two-year guarantee and many have multiple functions.

“For example, we have traditional kettles, but also teamakers that double as kettles if you remove the infuser.”

There is also a move towards products which actively save money and the air fryer market has taken off over the past year. Duncan Singleton, Salter trading director, explains: “The air fryer trend is going nowhere this year, with many people who purchased their first air fryer in the last few years now looking to upgrade their existing model. Amidst the ongoing cost-of-living crisis, consumers have been swayed by the energy saving benefits of air frying - with Salter air fryers using up to 70% less energy to run than traditional convection ovens.

“Salter has responded to this demand for upgraded air fryers with brand new multifunctional additions to our collection, including our Fuzion Dual Air Fryer, a dual compartment air fryer with removable divider.

“Our new XL Digital Steam Air Fryer combines air fry and steam functions for ultimate versatility in the kitchen, making it the perfect gadget for someone looking to experiment with their cooking methods and upgrade their existing air fryer.”

Gemma Harrington, marketing manager at Bluestem Group, agrees: “Air fryers are here to stay. The trend for them grew in 2022 due to the economic climate

PROGRESSIVE ELECTRICAL: TRENDS
22 PROGRESSIVE ELECTRICAL Above: Bamix Cordless provides flexibility in the kitchen. The battery has a working time of up to 20 minutes, allowing for use in outdoor kitchens, when barbecuing and more.  Below: The Salter Fuzion Air Fryer can be used as a dual air fryer, or for cooking big joints of meat or family meals once the divider is removed.

changing and consumers were looking for ways to save money. Not only do they save on bills, but they also produce healthier meals too. Air fryers require as little as 1tbsp of oil to make delicious crispy meals.

“Mini ovens, which also feature built-in hobs, are a great option for cooking without having to turn on a conventional oven. Mini ovens do not require as much energy to cook as conventional ovens, and they cook food much faster too. Ingenix’s range runs from 30L all the way up to 60L, so every size family can be catered for.”

Chris Coleman, global vp of marketing at DH Lifelabs, also sees health and wellness as one of the key focus areas: “There is a growing demand for appliances that promote health and wellness. This includes appliances such as air purifiers, juicers, blenders for making smoothies, and appliances that aid in food preservation.”

A combination of energy saving and health is key for Nick O'Mahony, national field sales manager at Burton McCall: “Energy-efficient products plus health and wellbeing are still key players in the market. Bamix ticks all of these boxes, being manufactured in Switzerland and having created a range that not only works incredibly well, but continues to deliver great performance for many years after purchase.

“Consumers are also very aware of their disposable income at the moment. All macro-economic challenges are bearing down on the UK market and purchases are certainly considered.”

Meanwhile, seasonal products continue to trend. Marcus says: “Those products for the upcoming summer season are proving popular including BBQ grills (both table and contact grills), juicers, citrus presses and ice cube makers.”

Similarly to most other sectors, eco-friendly products are at the forefront. Chris comments: “Consumers are becoming more conscious about their environmental footprint. Energy-efficient appliances that help reduce energy consumption and promote sustainability are gaining popularity.”

Another key trend is for smart appliances. Chris continues: “With the advancement of

technology, smart appliances have gained popularity. Consumers are increasingly interested in appliances that can be controlled and monitored remotely using smartphones or voice assistants.”

While the sector seems to be changing, it is still strong. Nick concludes: “The growing market is projected to increase by nearly 5% by 2030, according to key market insights and there is a huge rise in demand for smart home technology to make everyday life easier.”

Where coffee meets art

A family-run business, La Pavoni was founded in 1905 in Milan, Italy, when Desiderio Pavoni started working on the Ideale, one of the first commercial coffee machines for bars. In 2019, the company was acquired by Smeg. Progressive Housewares visited the London Coffee Festival to meet the team and find out more about the heritage brand.

La Pavoni espresso machines are far more than coffee machines. They are individual pieces of art, which ooze Italian glamour and create a showstopping feature in any kitchen or coffee shop, while also creating quality, speciality coffee. Having created one of the first commercial espresso machines in 1905, La Pavoni drew on its experience to make it accessible in the home post-war and therefore designed one of the first electric espresso machine's for the home.

Donna Cox, senior national account manager, expands: “In 1961, La Pavoni made the Europiccola. And the Europiccola was the first domestic espresso machine. Then as time went on, the company started to make changes to materials,

using high end materials in the construction of the lever machines.”

At this point, the machines took on a serious case of style as well as function. So much so, that there is even a La Pavoni machine in the New York Museum of Modern Art.

Donna tells us: “Europiccola is recognised as sometimes more of an art piece, and people will have it on the counter just because it looks great. Over the years and due to the iconic look these machines have featured in many films including the Europicola in ‘Live and Let Die.”

Throughout its history, La Pavoni has partnered with renowned designers and artists, including Bruno Munari for the Diamante, Alberto Rosselli for the Brasilia, Carlo Galizzi across a number of products, elevating its status as a design-led brand.

Smeg bought the brand in 2019 as the family business wanted to expand, but didn’t have the expert know-how. At the time, Smeg was expanding into the coffee machine sector and the Italian brand was the perfect fit for its portfolio, while bringing with it a wealth of knowledge and expertise.

Donna explains: “This is a coffee connoisseur’s product that we wanted to introduce. So we started with a

Community feel

l Although La Pavoni attracts a niche audience, they are far from exclusive. A Facebook group welcomes new members and new owners, supporting and helping them with their machines. The community will offer advice, troubleshooting tips and share ideas with a welcoming environment.

Donna says: “If you’re thinking of buying a La Pavoni, the advice and help that people will give others is really open and supportive. It’s a really nice community to be involved in.”

and prosumer grinders.”

Donna continues: “Our range is now expanding into various new colour ways including matte black. which will launch with a refreshed look in the semi pro range in the autumn which we hope to attract wider consumer audience..”

La Pavoni machines allow retailers to introduce consumers to high end, quality coffee, with a range of models that can be considered very affordable and allows consumers to experience the heritage of the brand. Owning a La Pavoni takes consumers on a journey of discovery, allowing experimentation through different coffee roasts to a point where they can completely personalise their own espresso.

“For those consumers who are truly wanting that authentic experience, La Pavoni is perfect. The retailers that we’re doing well with are the likes of Harrods, Selfridges, Borough Kitchen and Fenwick, with whom we have given a lot of training and support to. Allowing v to capitalise on the domestic coffee machine boom which is a focus of many retailers this year.”

Changing worktops

With continued pressure on consumer budgets, GfK is seeing a continuing trend for shoppers buying energy saving SDAs, as well as treating themselves to café-style hot drinks at home. Bruce Denton, client solutions consultant, outlines the latest statistics in the sector.

This decade is proving a challenge and we are still only 1,250 days (ish) into it. As if a global pandemic wasn’t enough, consumers are dealing with the fallout of the war in Ukraine, increased energy prices, and inflation levels at record highs, which combined are driving down consumer confidence. Low confidence typically results in shoppers watching every penny they spend and making more informed purchases.

This is a trend we are seeing in home appliances as buyers weigh up the item price, versus the long-term energy savings for instance.

The GfK Consumer Confidence Barometer, an established and trusted economic indicator that has been measuring consumer confidence monthly since 1974, shows consumer confidence has never been as low as it has been over the last six months. But there are some signs of hope. The measure, although still negative, has increased steadily every month in 2023 and has recovered to a level on a par with April 2020 when the pandemic hit. In other words, consumers are adapting and getting on with their lives as best they can.

So, while individually, people can’t control rising energy prices, they can make efforts to manage their own energy consumption. While some MDA appliances like conventional ovens and tumble dryers have been demonised in the media for their high cost per use, sales of those appliances offering energy-saving and money saving credentials are flourishing. Hybrid working is also helping drive demand and the market for nonseasonal Small Domestic Appliances (SDA) is up 41% in Q1 2023 versus Q1 2022.

Air fryers - new kids on the worktop

Air Fryers are the category driving growth in SDA. Initially launched as being the healthy

28 PROGRESSIVE ELECTRICAL

alternative to deep frying, it is their energy saving not calorie saving credentials that are seeing them fly off the shelves. With energy prices rocketing since April 2022, the market grew 285% in Q1 2023. Compared to the 12 months to March 2019, the category is up 1,103%. With kitchen worktop space at a premium, the air fryer is quickly taking its place among the kettle and toaster as being an appliance that doesn’t get put in the cupboard.

Temperature controlled kettles outperform the market

In Q1 2023, sales of kettles were broadly flat in value terms versus Q1 2022. In comparison, the market for temperature-controlled models, with an average price tag 170% higher than non-temperature-controlled models, grew 40% in value over the same period.

But there are consumers who like their hot beverage a bit more ‘boujie’. They need to have café-standard coffee at home, and this desire continues to drive the hot beverage maker market. While categories like Food Preparation- that also enjoyed a stay-at-home boost during the pandemic - have fallen back to pre-pandemic levels - hot beverage makers grew 3.2% in Q1 2023 versus Q1 2022, and the Q1 2023 market was 28% higher than Q1 2020.

At GfK, we believe that consumers will continue to spend wisely on appliances offering quality output and practical benefits and models offering additional energy saving benefits are likely to thrive.
