WELCOME TO THE BRAND & LIFESTYLE LICENSING AWARDS 2018

T

he B&LLAs celebrate true excellence in brand licensed merchandise and IP management as well as outstanding retail execution. Brand owners right across the spectrum including heritage, FMCG, talent, food, automotive, design, talent and fashion are represented in this stunning room in The Dorchester today. Likewise retailers of all disciplines, and suppliers from a multitude of specialisms, are also here. Collectively you are the cutting edge of licensing in the growing brand licensing arena. This is the third year of the B&LLAs. As many of you may know, we recognised that brand licensing was not being properly represented within our established UK Licensing Awards (which take place every September and remain the largest licensing awards in the world). These established awards are heavily biased towards the entertainment side of the industry so in launching the B&LLAs we have been able to do true justice to the rapidly evolving brand licensing facet of the industry.

The input and support from the brand licensing and retailing community has been incredible – we have a stellar roster of sponsors, not least Brand Licensing Europe (our headline sponsor) and our respected trade body, LIMA, which has given the B&LLAs its official pledge of support again this year. As a reflection of the growing brand licensing activity, this year’s awards attracted a record number of entries from a wide diversity of suppliers and retailers were palpably more enthusiastic to become part of the judging panel, such is the growing interest in brand licensed merchandise at consumer level. There really is true innovation out there as testified by the extraordinary quality of the finalists. Good luck to everyone and we hope you enjoy a wonderful afternoon.

THE LIGHT FUND, OUR INDUSTRY CHARITY The Light Fund, set up in 2004, is the licensing industry’s registered charity. The ‘Light’ part of the name is an acronym for ‘licensing industry giving help together’ and this is exactly what it does. Since its inception, The www.lightfund.org Light Fund has raised over £1.2 million and funded well over 200 charity projects that have helping men, women and children less fortunate than ourselves, all over the world. This year alone, The Light Fund is setting its sights high, hoping to raise over £200,000. There is a stunning line-up of prizes in today’s charity raffle, every single penny of which will go to The Light Fund. Huge thanks to everyone who has donated these prizes and to you for buying raffle tickets!

The Brand & Lifestyle Licensing Awards are organised and owned by Max Publishing, owners of The Licensing Source Book Europe and The Licensing Awards Max Publishing is an independent media company that is wholly owned by Jakki Brown, Ian Hyder and Warren Lomax and also publishes The Licensing Source Book, Progressive Preschool, Progressive Greetings, Progressive Gifts & Home, Progressive Housewares and Progressive Party. Max Publishing also organises and owns other leading B2B awards events, namely The Licensing Awards, the Progressive Preschool Awards, The Henries, The Retas, The Excellence in Housewares Awards, The Calies and The Greats as well as the Progressive Greetings Live exhibition and LicensingSource.net, PG Buzz.net Preschoolnews.net and Partyworldwide.net (through its sister company Max Media Ventures) Copyright 2018. IN THE MAKING

These are only the third ever B&LLAs, yet thanks to the incredible support and input from the brand licensing and retailing community, the awards have quickly become established as true accolades of excellence. And, it is only fitting that the event at which the awards are presented is of commensurate quality. Here we share just some of the extra ingredients that have gone into making the B&LLAs 2018 rather special.

THE IMPRESSIVE CAST

W

hile the B&LLAs’ spotlight is shining directly on the finalists and winners, the awards event also draws on the expertise of a wealth of talented individuals to help ensure that the whole afternoon is truly memorable. Laura Tennison MBE, founder of the trailblazing children’s retailing business, JoJo Maman Bébé will share her inspiring story of building this brand both in the UK and internationally, providing plenty of ‘food for thought’ before lunch is served. Talking about inspirational, with 75 choirs in British military bases across the UK and overseas, the Military Wives Choirs is a charity that brings over 2.000 women in the military community closer together through singing. Today, the

North London Military Wives Choir will take to the stage to perform some lovely pieces that have been chosen for their sense of solidarity and belonging. There was a groundswell of positive reactions when it was was announced that actor, screenwriter and director, Richard E. Grant was to host this year’s B&LLAs. Richard rose to fame starring as Withnail in the cult 1987 film Withnail and I. Since then, he has appeared in over 40 films including The Iron Lady, How to Get Ahead in Advertising, Bram Stoker’s Dracula, Jack & Sara, L.A. Story and Tim Burton’s animated fantasy Corpse Bride. He wrote and directed comedy-drama Wah Wah which starred British actresses Julie Walters and Celie Imrie. On TV, Richard has starred in Game of Thrones, Downton

Abbey and Doctor Who, while he also presented two series of luxury travelogue series Hotel Secrets. As an author, Richard has told the stories of his film career in With Nails: The Film Diaries of Richard E. Grant, By Design: A Hollywood Novel, and The Wah-Wah Diaries: The Making of a Film. Richard has also been involved in the making of a brand, having ventured into perfumery in 2014 releasing unisex fragrance ‘Jack’ for London department store Liberty.

A CELEBRATION OF PARTNERSHIP & SOME As a design consultancy, My Design Company has created innovative products and brand design solutions for many of the brands who entered the B&LLAs. The London-based design company, co-owned by husband and wife duo, Jamal Merdassi and Georgina Gain was the perfect partner to undertake the challenge of designing the official invitation to the awards event. ‘Perfect partnerships’ and the ampersand which features strongly in the B&LLAs identity was among the inspiration which set the creative direction for the ticket. “The ampersand evokes a closer collaboration than simply the word ‘and’, as it suggests both parties have contributed significantly and successfully. We felt that the ampersand alone represents the same values as the collaborations championed and recognised by the Brand & Lifestyle Licensing Awards,” explains Jamal. Adding a quirky touch, the inside of the beautifully foiled ‘open envelope’ features examples of winning collaborations that illustrate perfect partnerships… from Torvill & Dean and Rhubarb & Custard to a refreshing Gin & Tonic! The Brand and Lifestyle Licensing Awards logo was debossed into a heavyweight cotton board (from top end paper company, GF Smith) to echo how the awards leave a lasting impression. The maestros at award-winning printers Windles undertook the printing and finishing, including precision application of luxurious pearl gold foil.

FEAST FOR THE SENSES The Dorchester is renowned not only for its sumptuous surroundings, but also the quality of its cuisine. The menu for The B&LLAs was selected by its head chef with discerning brand licensing folk in mind. Licensing agency The Point 1888 commissioned designer Yvonne Ellen to design a striking menu post card encompassing her distinctive artwork. But it will not just be the sense of taste that is in for a treat as Corsair Toiletries is providing INNO NO OV VA VAT V AT A TE CR C REAT ATE IN two eau de toilette fragrances (one more masculine, the other more feminine) that will

National Geographic compass and from Tango lip balm to a Happy Jackson hairbrush, and lots more besides! Above: Yvonne Ellen’s distinct artwork graces the menu card. THE ENTERING AND JUDGING PROCESS The entry process for all the B&LLA categories - product, property, retailing and brand ambassador awards - was undertaken completely online through a dedicated site. Entering The B&LLAs was free of charge for all. Distinct judging panels were formed to undertake the judging of the different categories. Each judge individually considered the online submissions. For example, key retailer buyers judged the product categories, while licensors and brand owners as well as licensees formed the judging panel for the retailer categories. Helping to spread the word about The B&LLAs, PR partners Kilogrammedia (headed up by the one and only Jane Garner). In addition to Max Publishing’s own media channels (notably the daily e-newsletter LicensingSource.net and Licensing Source Book), The B&LLAs’ official media partner is Total Brand Licensing.

THE BRAND LICENSING AMBASSADOR OF THE YEAR

SPONSORED BY

OPEN TO: Nominations were sought from the entire industry for individuals who have contributed greatly to the evolution of brand licensing. Their involvement could be as a brand owner, licensing agent, licensee or trade supplier.

Who will be the winner this year?

This industry is blessed with visionaries whose passion, commitment, creative thinking and attention to detail has been instrumental in the development of brand and lifestyle licensing.

PREVIOUS WINNERS OF THIS AWARD INCLUDE... 2017 WINNER: JANE EVANS OF JELC An excerpt of the speech from LSB’s Jakki Brown before the award was presented: “Sometimes in your working life you come across special individuals who do not fit into a pigeonhole; real trailblazers who are not afraid to go against the tide. Today’s award recipient is one of those rare breeds whose strength of character coupled with an innate compass for brand licensing has, time and time again, found a way through largely unchartered waters. With uncanny ambidextrous skills they have, over three decades, demonstrated that they feel equally at home in the corporate world as they do in the entrepreneurial camp. Having cut their teeth in the entertainment side of the industry back in the late 80s, they went on to found and head up the UK office of a multi-national brand licensing agency and then 11 years later went on to more than hold their own as owner and founder of an independent licensing agency, joining forces for several years with a fellow female industry stalwart. The continuum in all of this has been brands. The individual we honour today has an uncanny knack of totally understanding the essence of brands and then finding the right partners to translate this into innovative products that chime with consumer tastes. They saw the potential of brand licensing before the term even came into being. Right from the outset they fearlessly championed brand licensing for stellar multi dollar leading names such as Coca-Cola and Harley Davison before rising to the challenge of doing the same with utility and art brands. No sweat. They really were at the forefront of establishing what has become a mighty market sector. In fact so many of the brands whose licensing programmes and merchandise we have recognised in the Bellas today would just not be in the position they are without the magic touch of this special person. Her twinkly smile belies a woman with an inner strength and passion for brand licensing. Her hair colour might change dramatically from time to time, but her focus on brand licensing never falters. In latter years she has deliberately operated under the radar, well this afternoon she cannot avoid the spotlight. The 2017 Brand Licensing Ambassador of the Year award goes to Jane Evans.”

2016 WINNER: ANGELA FARRUGIA OF CAA-GBG An excerpt of the speech from LSB’s Jakki Brown before the award was presented: “This special individual has been involved in licensing for three decades. While their initial focus was on entertainment brands, they spotted the potential of brand licensing way before almost everyone else. It was an initial uphill struggle as you can imagine, convincing brand owners that their IP really should be utilised in other directions, winning over licensees and retailers to share their pioneering vision. In 1996, leaving the safe haven of a leading licensing agency, joining forces with a kindred spirit they took the bold step of setting up their own company, where brand licensing has really come into its own. Through a combination of vision, tenacity, passion and sheer determination, the company today’s winner co-founded has gone onto great heights, spawning 14 offices around the world, representing many leading fashion, auto, food and beverage and lifestyle brands and generating an incredible $8.4billion in retail sales in the last year alone.”

43 BRAND & LIFESTYLE LICENSING AWARDS 2018

Above and right: Jane Evans, founder of JELC was presented with her trophy by Denise Penn, sales director EMEA of BrandComply.com, category sponsor of this prestigious award. Below: Angela Farrugia, co-founder of TLC and now group md of CAAGBC collected her award from BrandComply’s Denise Penn.
